Business Challenges:

For small to mid-size businesses, system downtime is never a minor detail. Tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars a day can be lost, severely impacting businesses, sometimes to the point of collapse. Luckily, such an extreme scenario has never been the case with the U.S. TyloHelo Group offices. But the company was savvy enough to know that, with its current disaster recovery solution, any kind of disaster or other event that caused equipment failure or loss would result in downtime that could last up to five days, translating to a hefty financial toll. “We were using a Quantum tape backup solution,” said Matt Campbell, IT director at TyloHelo. “But you never know if even a tape will suffice, especially if it’s missing when you need it most.”

Campbell is referring to an incident in 2004, when all of TyloHelo’s servers were stolen, along with all its tape drives. “Luckily, I had one
tape and one domain controller at another office,” recalled Campbell. “From that, we were able to restore our complete domain. We lost three days, but none of our data.” Still, three days lost was three days too long, in Campbell’s opinion.

Campbell’s memory of the theft resurfaced when, in February 2009, he noted that their current servers were moving past end-of-life, and, although he wanted to keep the servers that still performed well, the others were ready for retirement. “Since we were going to replace
some servers, we thought it was a good time to find a disaster recovery solution that would provide immediate backup in case of disaster or equipment loss,” said Campbell.

Business Challenges:

With a pedigree going back 120 years, Weddel Swift Distribution Ltd is the distribution arm of the Randall Parker Food Group
serving the Butcher on the high street. Weddel Swift has 14 depots or centers across the United Kingdom, employing a mix of physical and virtual servers (including six Windows servers). The company relied on an outsourced tape-based solution which also required them to duplicate all communications, resulting in long recovery times should a disaster occur. Weddel Swift was looking for a highly reliable disaster recovery solution that could provide fast recovery, yet was also easy to use and affordable.

Business Challenges: Unreliable andExpensive Backups with Long Recovery Time

Trinity Logistics had been using Backup Exec to DLT tape as their backup and recovery solution. Steve Denger, the IT Manager at Trinity Logistics, found Backup Exec to be unreliable, and their backup to tapes were expensive and could not be verified. When testing data recovery, they found that their recovery time was days. There was also no indication as to whether their tape backups would be reliable when they’re needed for recovery.

Business Challenges: Threat of prolonged system downtime; cumbersome testing process

In the financial industry, reputation is everything. And no bank understands that better than Tomah, Wis.-based Timberwood Bank, which has managed to uphold a stellar reputation for the past decade, thanks to an unwavering commitment to its customers. “Our customers are always top of mind for us,” said Brenda Meyer, information security officer at Timberwood Bank. “We want them to know that we are here for them, ready to help with their financial needs.”

Given this commitment, it’s not surprising that Timberwood Bank takes disaster recovery very seriously. But concerns about the bank’s aging servers prompted a closer look at its legacy DR solution, Symantec BackupExec, and the solution’s inability to ensure redundancy & business continuity during a disaster. “We simply can’t afford 48 to 72 hours of system downtime,” explained John Kenworthy, IT network administrator and building security officer at Timberwood Bank. “For example, in order to serve our customers, we have to be able process customer requests. If the system is down, there’s no way to serve our customers effectively. We can’t just tell our customers that they can’t be taken care of for a few days or longer. People don’t want to hear about ‘downtime.’ They count on us to get them the funds they need. Any system interruption would impact our ability to do that.”

Moreover, testing the system proved cumbersome, and left uncertainty as to whether the bank could truly get back up & running after a disaster. “With our legacy system, we were able to test just the bank’s data, not its entire system,” said Kenworthy. As a result, the bank could never be sure that its applications and systems could be restored after a disaster hit.

Business Challenges:

IT Director David Painter oversees a busy IT department that does more than manage technologies and daily workflows; they align their innovation with business initiatives and try to streamline efficiencies in an expanding organization. They also handle system to system integrations with customers and integrate orders and invoices with customers—what Painter calls “offering full service IT.”

After the team moved into a VMware environment, Painter began thinking about how they would back up the virtual servers. At the time, Texas Electric Cooperatives was using several backup and disaster recovery solutions, each handling a different piece of the puzzle. “But it was a headache,” Painter recalled. “We had too many vendors, so we wanted to pull it all together.

He began researching different BDR solutions, trying to find something that could boost reliability and reduce downtime. The solution also had to be efficient and easy to use, so the team could focus on new initiatives rather than spending time on manual tasks. Tejas Tubular’s popularity has led to a growing number of manufacturing facilities across Texas, which has endowed the IT team with a considerable number of systems to manage. But like many teams, they didn’t always have a high- performing BDR system. When IT Manager Ricardo Martinez joined the company in January 2009, the company was backing up to tape and an external hard drive. “There was no disaster recovery site, just a simple backup system,” Martinez recalled. “At the end of the day, backups went onto an external hard drive and the manager took it home. He swapped the drives on a daily basis.”

Martinez, who came to Tejas Tubular from the medical field, was used to “a different approach” to backup and disaster recovery. Interested in strengthening the company’s resiliency, he began looking for a new solution that could expand the team’s BDR ecosystem. “I wanted to offer my CEO a DR site,” he explained.

The Stillaguamish Tribe of Indians’ main administrative office is responsible for the tribe’s payroll, human resources, and primary network functions, and includes three Windows 2008 servers in addition to six other servers used for the tribe’s dental, legal, methadone clinic, Tribal Gaming Agency (TGA) and TGA licensing services. While the tribe uses a cloud- based backup system to protect its data, this system does not provide fast recovery, since restoring data from the cloud requires time and resources to find, pull, and finally restore data. The tribe wanted the ability to instantly recover its data and applications should any of its servers go down.
