Spring Sweets
Mar. 22nd, 2026 01:00 pmThough it already feels like summer down here in sweltering ol' Florida, I'm determined to make the most of this "Spring" thing. (So long as it doesn't involve leaving the house, of course. Have you SEEN the pollen levels out there? HAVE YOU? Poor John is a one-man sneeze machine.)
Ahem.
So, yeah, in honor of Spring I plan to revel in sweet pastels...
And cutey-patootie lady bugs...
And even a little gardening!
Made by Jean D.
FYI: Oreo crumb "dirt" is my favorite kind of dirt.
Oh, and I couldn't decide which gardening cake I liked better, so here, have two:
Mmmm...edible garden tools.
I don't wear heels very often, and to be honest I'm not all that fond of shoe cakes...but this is the exception:
Open mouth: insert shoe.
Seriously, this sweet Jimmy Choo shoe makes me think sugar and spice and everything frilly, girly, and nice. Perfect for a garden party where everyone's sipping tea out of delicate porcelain teacups like this:
Submitted by Emily B. and made by All About Cake
Except these teacups aren't porcelain; they're sugar. WOWZA.
And what garden is complete without a birdhouse?
(I can't get over that weathered "wood" fence and the "metal" roof. Amazing.)
And we can't forget Spring's main attraction: the flowers!
Just when you thought a cake couldn't get any better, you go and learn that the butterflies are made of chocolate. I repeat: THE BUTTERFLIES ARE MADE OF CHOCOLATE.
Man, I love Spring.
And you'll never believe it, but these flowers are made of sugar paste:
Submitted by Alison M.; baker unknown.
And this is actually cake!
Submitted by Isabella, made by Williams-Sonoma
Well, ok, the missing slice helps make it a bit more believable.
If you follow me over on my other blog, Epbot, then you know I've had cherry blossoms on the brain lately. So naturally, I couldn't resist this slice of heaven:
By the way, for all of you in the DC area admiring the cherry blossoms right now: I am so jealous.
Spring weddings always have the cleanest, freshest style:
Made by Julie D.
And finally, let's go out with a Sweet Spring-splosion!
Those flowers may look freshly cut, but they're actually painstakingly hand crafted from sugarpaste. The cake itself is fondant-free, though, and I have to say I'm really digging that texture. Absolutely gorgeous.
Hope you enjoyed my pollen-and-allergen-free Spring Sweets! Happy Sunday!

Fandom: Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid

Characters: Shane Hollander, Ilya Rozanov, David Hollander, Yuna Hollander
Additional Tags: POV Outsider, Episode Tag, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, David Hollander takes charge, Marriage Proposal
Summary:
Of the two of them, Yuna is the worrier. Everyone who knows them, knows that. David is the quiet presence in the background, ready with calming words, or a convenient shoulder, always the one providing sustenance —and, if the situation proves sufficiently dire, cracking open a bottle of wine. Or vodka.
That's the face they show the world, anyway.
The truth is a little more complicated. Yuna worries out in the open, wearing her concerns on her sleeve the way lovers—though apparently that word has fallen out of fashion when David wasn't looking—wear hearts. But David is a closet worrier.
David's perspective on the end of season 1, and beyond. He winds up making a suggestion that maybe only he can make.

Mar. 22nd, 2026 05:32 amYesterday, not long after I closed my computer, Yoda and my sister got up, and after his breakfast, he demanded walks. Still has a bit of the runs, and I'll admit to gagging as I was getting it up. I have a very sensitive gag reflex, and it just triggered it. He was a good boy, and we got back inside as Jess was getting up. After that, it was off to the pharmacy to get a metric ton of medication. It wasn't quite as bad as when Jess and I both have to get our psych meds, but close. I had an inhaler, plus the Mounjaro and scopolamine patches, plus a new Statin medicine the doctor had recommended. I do a coaching session with my insurance for my diabetes and asthma medications, so a chunk of the meds were free to me. Basically, I chat on the phone with a nurse case manager once a month, and Hopkins pays my copay. So the Mounjaro, the inhaler, and the Rosuvastatin, all are free. The other meds ended up being about $8. Can't really beat that.
Of course, the moment I got home, I popped the Mounjaro open and read the verious papers. Then I yanked my pants down and stabbed myself in the thigh with it. Good lord, it burned like hell. In cool things, though while the serum needs to be refrigerated, it is also shelf stable for 21 days at room temperature. Which is going to make the trip SO much easier. When the pharmacist pulled the package out of the refrigerator, my brain starting running the hamster wheel, trying to figure out how that was going to work.
Instead, it'll work just fine. I'll just have the pens in my bag, along with everything else.
I do know that next time I do it (I have an alarm set for Saturday at 9am) I'll leave it out overnight, and see if room temp makes it burn less than it did cold. It wasn't a dealbreaker, but it was somewhat unpleasant as the burn stuck around for about half an hour.
Today, my leg is a bit achy, but not horrible.
Then, I hoped onto the smaller server to play a quick oneshot called "The Town where nothing goes
I suppose if the wifi is as good as it's supposed to be, we could probably play something on the ship on Friday night, but that might be tough. Though there is a vanity in the closet that one of us could play at. Might be tough, but it could be fun. We'll see.
The rest of the day was quiet. We took the dog out again and relaxed until it was time for the Crooked Moon game. I really enjoy the game, but it's definitely some heavy lifting as many of the more immersive games are. But the characters are wonderful. I put out the call for a folk horror game and my players, as always, understood the assignment for their characters. They're all disasters, and I'm looking forward to playing more with their backstories. I love each and every character.
Today, I have Strixhaven at noon, and that is going to be super fun, and then I have the rest of the day to cook. When I finish this entry, I'm going to go clean out the cast iron dutch oven and get some chicken boiling to make Yoda's broth. Then, later, I shall clean out the cast iron again, and fry up some spinach, and make the filling for my stuffed shells. They shall go in the oven with a liberal amount of mozzarella on top, and will be hopefully delicious. I'm looking forward to them.
Some of my packages came yesterday, so I am once again the proud owner of a glucose monitor and blood pressure cup. The swimsuit from Torrid was a tiny disappointment, as it again does nothing to make the boobs look good, which made me sad. It's pretty suit, so I'll keep it. It's just not great in the chest region. That'll give me three suits to rotate out for the cruise. That should keep me from having to wear a very wet one.
Another package is coming today with a few t-shirts, a sleeveless top and a couple of pairs more of shorts. It's my spring package! It's a shame they won't come early, because it's supposed to be a fairly warm day. I wish the downtown farmer's market was open. I could go down and get some things. Probably nothing that I desperately need, but it would be fun. But alas, not til 4/12, and that day I have a game at 9. Of course, the market opens at 7 am, so its still possible. I'll mark it as a solid maybe.
If I can source my meat from farmers, I'd much rather. But the farmers market by us (which doesn't open til the end of April) only has poultry and pork, and I do like my beef. If I'm going to frequent them this year, I might need to consider a wheeled cart, especially for downtown where they have a ton of stuff.
There is a year-round one on Saturdays, but it's not as big, and Saturdays can be difficult with work and games. Next weekend we're free on Saturday, so it's possible that I could head down there. I'll see what I feel like doing.
Yoda is doing so much better. He's eating his chicken and rice and acting like himself again. Still maybe slightly subdued, but SO much better than he was. He really likes the rice and chicken, and I'm not sure we're going to convince him that kibble is better after this.
I've been looking at new desks, and have come to the conclusion that I have expensive tastes. I like the heavier, solid wood desks with a little character, and they are all freaking pricey. There was this one that was perfect. It had a hutch, and it was big enough for both monitors, and I loved it, and it was $3400, which is excessive. I do want something that'll last, but it doesn't have to last quite that long. I may go up to the Amish Market and see what they would charge. I'm sure it's expensive, but maybe not quite that much? I also want to get a new chair, which is always a crapshoot. I may just get that off Amazon. The last time I spent extra money on a chair, it actually made my back worse, but the cheapo off Amazon has worked fine.
Okay, time for me to contemplate a shower, and also starting Yoda's soup. Everyone have a super Sunday!

It has been many years, since my secret was featured on PostSecret, but I have never forgotten about it.

It was a hugely transformative moment in my life. I recently decided to share the story on a podcast. Here’s the link.

After my story was shared on the podcast, I got a tattoo to remind me of this whole story, and to symbolize my resilience throughout all of this. I am so grateful that I had my opportunity to share my secret with the world. I am also thankful that I am in a place where it is not a secret anymore. Thank you for providing the space to share.

tangent from the ballet questions
Mar. 21st, 2026 09:30 pmLike, I assume that A Castle is a significant economic unit, and having it fuck off behind a hedge for five generations, and then pop back into life has some effects on the surrounding countryside? (I guess in the ballet they put the whole kingdom to sleep? WHICH I ALSO HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT!)
Like your daughter is a maid in the castle, then poof! behind a hedge! But then she's back to meet her great grand nieces?
What if you had a financial relationship with the castle?
What if the neighbouring duke or whatever wanted your land? I assume he'd just take it, at that point, but then poof! the castle's back?
But also, the fey showing up and doing things seems to be normal and expected in this universe, so maybe people are just used to it, and have contingency plans for people stuck sleeping behind a hedge for five generations?
Anyway, is there like a novel that deals with this? If not Sleeping Beauty directly, then something similar, where it's a whole bunch of people forming a significant political and economic unit essentially yeeted out of time for a hundred years?
(Hard no on anything that involves the rapey version of Sleeping Beauty.)
Dept. of Rodentia
Mar. 21st, 2026 10:42 pmThe headline says it all.
I got up at 5:15 a.m. in order to watch the first BTS concert since all seven of the members got out of the military. Their last concert was four years ago, and they played this free event at Gwanghwamun Square in central Seoul, which is seen as the city's spiritual heart and most prominent gathering space. Thousands of fans watched in person, and millions more watched via Netflix, which is what I did.
The concert was short, just an hour long; they performed every song on their new album "Arirang" and about four of their earlier most popular songs. They really are a mesmerizing group to watch in full flight, although I was forced to wonder about bad omens; their leader, Kim Nam Joon (stage name RM) badly hurt an ankle during rehearsals, and had to spend much of the concert performing on a stool.
ARMY didn't mind, and perhaps the joy I saw reflected in the faces of fans watching did, as the young men told those fans, power everything that was happening on stage. With that kind of support, perhaps an injured ankle will be of little import.
I enjoyed the concert and was about to get up and get my second cup of coffee when I discovered that, having successfully mouse-proofed the south larder closet in our office, the little
How do I know? Carter, who's been acting very "I know there are mousies there" for the past day or so, abruptly tried to push his head under the base of one of the northern larders shelving units. As I prepared to look under the shelving unit myself, a tiny grey blur shot out between Carter and me, and disappeared somewhere in the wilds of the office, or perhaps out the office door and into the rest of the house.
At this point, after the initial confrontation, during which I shrieked almost loud and high enough to crack glass, all I could do was shake my head and laugh. Just a tiny laugh, mind you, but what else could I do? Beyond the inevitable cleaning job, I mean.
It's frustrating. Nearly every foodstuff we have in both the north and south larders has been stored in hard plastic bins now, but they will apparently try to feast on anything I hadn't yet gotten into said bins. They also tried to feed on the plastic surrounding some artwork that's in the north larder because there's no room for them elsewhere.
They haven't made too much of a mess, so I can only assume they just discovered the new route over the past couple of days. Cue tremendous sighs, and a wish that I could wave a wand and keep them out for good. I keep a clean place, people, and yet here they are.
By the end of today, Bob and I had visited one of our favorite hardware stores to get mouse shield foam and yet more steel wool. We've been there so often, at least a few of cashiers can kibbutz with us as they ring us up.
While I was out getting some more plastic storage containers at yet another of our favorite hardware stores, Bob deployed the foam and steel wool all around the furnace, after I'd vacuumed out far too much dust in the cubby. I really do keep a clean house; the problem is that I forget about the furnace cubby. So at least I can thank the mice for reminding me that I need to regularly vacuum around the furnace.
Positivity, that's the name of the game.
But I'm still looking around for that little grey blur; I just know he or she is lurking somewhere, preparing to scare the living bejesus out of me again.
The Understudies Get Their Turn: JUSTICE LEAGUE QUARTERLY #4 (JLI 72)

As Keith Giffen began to pull back, the longest era of Justice League Quarterly (#4-11) would feature other writers following in Giffen’s footsteps…as best they could. The fluid tone of the Giffen League, the way it could lurch from goofy meta to holocaustic grimness and everything in between, could be a challenge to imitate.

Torrent Watch Party!
Mar. 21st, 2026 06:54 pmI'm also glad I went early because the patio the event was on did run out of seating. People were standing next to the TV to the left of this shot:

The pop up had a Jackson jersey and I was good and did not buy my first hockey jersey. I am not buying a Jackson jersey unless they get a start or Seattle resigns them, in which was I'll be sad that I didn't get an inaugural jersey.
(CJ Jackson is openly NB, and a 3rd goalie for Seattle. I really want a jersey of Seattle's NB goalie, but no, not unless they stay in Seattle next year)
There was a girl there who said she was 'very new to hockey', but her clothes were in all Torrent colors, her handmade jewelry was in Torrent colors, she has a Torrent itabag and she'd made 'trinkets' to hand out, glass pendants she'd made in Torrent colors.
Pendant and also event swag:

Torrent have a lot of momentum. They sell out areas nearly 3x the size of the Boston Fleet's home arena. I really hope the team do just a little better to not lose some of that support.
Sucreabeille: Wake The Dead
Mar. 21st, 2026 07:55 pmThis is more of a challenge than it might seem to most people because I am utterly repulsed by some very common scents, and also some very common scents are major migraine triggers. A lot of it is "chemicals" like room spray, especially bathroom spray, and cheap aerosol perfumes but some natural stuff like stargazer lilies also trigger them. It's fun! It's a fun time! (It's not a fun time.)
Perfume oils don't tend to have the same effect, maybe because I'm so rarely exposed to them. They cling close to the skin, an intimate secret. That intimacy is another reason I like perfume oils - I don't want to make other people smell me, whether it's a scent I think is pleasant (perfume) or one I don't (body odor, garlic sweat, etc.).
I've been getting subscription bags from Sucreabeille (no, that's not a referral link or anything) which means I've been getting fun little surprises. It's a nice thing to look forward to and so far I've had at least one perfume I've really liked out of each batch. And since each subscription bag costs about the price of one perfume, and has more than one perfume... it's good odds. Also I am a sucker for gacha pulls.
It's early spring, but one of the scents I got is Wake The Dead: Spanish coffee, bitter caramel, lavender syrup, soft amber, spice .
It doesn't quite smell like autumn, but it smells autumn adjacent if that makes sense. It's a warm heavy scent, soft, almost snuggly but with a bit of an edge to it. It's a scent I could sink in to; it's the olfactory equivalent of a comfortable sweater.
I don't pick up the coffee scent at all, unless "Spanish coffee" is something I'm not familiar with that's different from drip coffee/espresso. The bitter sweet absolutely comes through. I don't pick up on the lavender syrup much, unless it's adding to the sweetness - if there's anything floral here it's lurking in the background. The spice is nice and mellow.
I'm looking forward to wearing this when it's cold again, but right now I'm more in the mood for light smells. Not so much florals perhaps, but petrichor and green things and maybe honey.

Mar. 21st, 2026 10:12 pmToday was A Travel Day; yesterday, in preparation for same, I Ran Errands, including "acquiring Tiny Cake" and "visiting the pharmacy".
On the way from those two jobs to the next couple, I passed Several Good Things.
One was a new-to-me flavour of completely ridiculous daffodil:

It's a double not in the sense of having a confusing froth of intermingled trumpets (as of Double Fashion or Double Camparnelle, both of which exist locally), but in the sense of having two nested trumpets, one shorter and orange, from which the longer white one protrudes. I have never! previously! seen a thing like this! I am really enjoying my current streak of encountering varieties of daffodil that make me go "what the fuck???"
Shortly thereafter I checked over my shoulder while crossing a tiny bridge and was startled and delighted to see A COOT UPON THE NEST that, last I passed it, was clearly still derelict. Obviously I went back and Gazed Upon It for Some Time and was eventually rewarded by it STANDING UP to reveal SEVEN??? (possibly) EGGS!!!
And the Egyptian goslings were peeping about the place when I subsequently passed them on my way back up the hill. A+ errands would run again.

Fossils
Mar. 21st, 2026 02:39 pmA newly discovered Triassic reptile from the UK looked more like a racing greyhound than a crocodile, built for speed on land. With long legs and a lightweight body, it hunted small animals in a dry, upland environment millions of years ago. Scientists identified it as a new species after spotting key differences in its fossils. It’s also a tribute to an inspiring teacher who helped spark a future scientist’s curiosity.
Peculiar Obligations has several such species called galloping crocodiles, hoofed crocodiles, or hoofers.
