The week-long selection climaxed this Saturday with a ceremony to confirm coaches who have been selected to join the nine-month hybrid/onsite elite training. The event was held at FERWAFA Accommodation facility in Remera, Kigali City.

The 13 selected coaches include; former Amavubi skipper Haruna Niyonzima, Innocent Murwanashyaka, Iragena Oscarie, Joseph Junior Rutagengwa, Nadia Bugenimana, Blaise Itangishaka, Nicolas Hakizimana, Darius Hirwa, Damascène Nsengiyumva, Emmanuel Coman Mugisha, Schadrack Nsengayire, Shema Bravo and Sifa Gloria Nibagwire.

Presiding over the closing ceremony, FERWAFA President Fabrice Shema Ngoga expressed gratitude to the Government of Rwanda for facilitating the partnership. He said, “I thank the Government of Rwanda for bringing Atlético Madrid to Rwanda. I also congratulate you that you are part of the few coaches selected to benefit from this program, “

He further added, “Challenge yourselves to fight for coaching slots on the national team in the next four years. Who knows? Even before that, you can become part of the National Team technical staff or under-age team coaches,”

The Atlético Madrid technical delegation, represented by Carlos and Iván Paz, praised Rwanda’s broader vision for sport and national development:

He said, “Your commitment to sports and social cohesion continues to inspire countries far beyond your borders. Rwanda’s progress is not only a national achievement. It is a beacon of hope for all who believe in the power of human potential,”

“As we gather here today, I am reminded that Rwanda’s story is not just about rebuilding, it is about re-imagining what a nation can become. It is about choosing collaboration over division, progress over stagnation, and vision over fear.”

The initiative, implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports (MINISPORTS) and the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA), is aimed at strengthening grassroots football by equipping local coaches with modern technical, tactical and pedagogical skills aligned with international best practices.

Under the “Training for Coaches Programme,” selected participants will receive structured technical support and season-long mentorship based on the renowned methodology of Academia Atlético de Madrid, one of Europe’s most respected football development institutions.

The programme is designed to build a strong foundation for youth football in Rwanda by developing highly qualified coaches, enhancing player development pathways, and contributing to the long-term competitiveness of Rwandan football at both regional and international levels.

Now she joins us as we expand across the continent, from Johannesburg to Accra, Kigali to Lagos, and now Pretoria. Move Afrika is redefining global touring by placing Africa’s creative excellence at the center of the international circuit, creating jobs, strengthening local creative industries, and driving long-term economic growth powered by culture.”

“We’re excited to welcome Global Citizen and Move Afrika back to Rwanda. Move Afrika’s return reflects our continued dedication to elevating Africa’s creative industries and using the influence of global entertainment to drive meaningful progress across the continent,” said Jean-Guy Afrika, Chief Executive Officer, Rwanda Development Board.

“This partnership supports our vision of Rwanda as a premier destination for live entertainment, one that creates jobs for young people, unlocks new economic opportunities, and delivers lasting benefits for Rwanda and the continent as a whole.”

Since its inception, Move Afrika has created over 2,500 jobs in Kigali and Lagos, with more than 90 percent of crew and production roles filled by local talent. In Kigali, the proportion of local crew increased from 75 percent in 2023 to 90 percent in 2025, with 95 percent of audio and lighting equipment sourced locally.

The program also expanded youth training initiatives in rigging, security, and hospitality.

Youth training was further strengthened through the Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator, providing 50 young people with paid, hands-on experience in production and event operations.

Move Afrika: Lagos employed 90 percent local crew and utilized 95 percent locally sourced equipment, awarding contracts to local vendors across technical production, staging, and event design. Ahead of Move Afrika 2026, plans are underway to create additional employment opportunities and expand the youth employment accelerator scheme.

The 2026 edition of Move Afrika builds on last year’s citizen-led advocacy campaign calling for stronger health systems across Africa. Harnessing the power of live music to grow the creator economy while advancing access to healthcare, Global Citizen will campaign alongside local partners ahead of each event to urge African nations to strengthen primary care, sexual and reproductive health and rights, invest in health resilience, and reduce financial barriers to public health.

To coincide with Move Afrika 2026, the Music Economy Development Initiative (MEDI), launched alongside last year’s campaign, will release new research, in partnership with Global Citizen, Universal Music Group and IFC, aimed at driving music policy reform and positioning music financing as a key driver of sustainable growth in Africa’s creative economy.

MEDI provides data, evidence, and insights that simplify understanding of the music industry and how to support it. The initiative works to leverage music’s economic potential worldwide, support targeted investments to empower creators, amplify communities that have been underrepresented, and bring more local music to global audiences.

Move Afrika is Global Citizen’s pan-African touring initiative designed to address the world’s inequities by creating job and entrepreneurship opportunities for the continent’s emerging generations through an annual series of live music events. Showcasing the best of Africa to the world, Move Afrika drives transformative investments within local communities, engaging local artists, vendors, agencies and crews, while creating opportunities for on-the-job skill development and training. Move Afrika will set a new gold-standard for entertainment touring events, increasing demand from international and regional artists to tour in the region and building local capacity within host cities across the continent. The tour will continue to expand annually, with additional countries joining the circuit as Move Afrika scales across the continent over the next five years

Global Citizen is grateful for the support of leading media companies including: BellaNaija, EIB Network, Rolling Stone Africa, TIME Africa, TimesLIVE and Vanguard Media.

The 2026 installment of Move Afrika builds on Global Citizen’s previous campaigns and events across Africa, including the 2025 installment of Move Afrika: Kigali and Move Afrika: Lagos, headlined by John Legend; the inaugural 2023 edition of Move Afrika: Rwanda, headlined by Kendrick Lamar; Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100, which featured Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Ed Sheeran, Usher, Eddie Vedder, and Chris Martin of Coldplay in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2018; Global Citizen Live: Lagos, with performances by Davido, Femi Kuti, and Tiwa Savage at Fela Kuti’s New Afrika Shrine in 2021; and Global Citizen Festival: Accra, which brought Usher, SZA, Stormzy, and TEMS to the Black Star Square in 2022.

Arsenal and Visit Rwanda to conclude landmark eight-season partnership in June 2026 https://rdb.rw/arsenal-and-visit-rwanda-to-conclude-landmark-eight-season-partnership-in-june-2026/ Wed, 19 Nov 2025 09:10:26 +0000 https://rdb.rw/?p=12593 Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have mutually agreed to conclude their partnership at the end of this season, bringing to a close an eight-season collaboration that included Visit Rwanda as Arsenal’s first Official Sleeve Partner.

The move reflects Visit Rwanda’s broader strategy to diversify its global sports partnerships and expand into new markets that support the next phase of its tourism and investment ambitions.

Together, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have exceeded the original goals of the partnership – promoting conservation and sustainable tourism, inspiring millions of supporters to discover the country, and creating a lasting foundation for tourism growth.

The partnership has showcased Rwanda’s natural beauty and accelerated the growth of the country’s tourism industry. Visitor arrivals reached 1.3 million in 2024 with tourism revenues rising to US $650m, a 47% increase since the partnership began.1

Standout moments throughout the partnership include the Rwanda Heritage Day at Emirates Stadium, as well as visits from the Arsenal family including Alex Scott, Mathieu Flamini, Bacary Sagna, Jurrien Timber, Caitlin Foord, Katie McCabe and Laia Codina. Together they experienced Rwanda’s extraordinary natural and cultural heritage, from mountain gorilla trekking and Big Five safaris in Akagera, to canopy walks in Nyungwe and lake leisure on Kivu, as well as participating in the annual Kwita Izina gorilla naming ceremony – the country’s flagship conservation event.

The partnership has also supported Rwanda’s ambition to become an international sporting hub in Africa and host more global sporting events whilst delivering grassroot football initiatives that have helped hundreds of young players and coaches develop their skills and inspire greater participation in sport across the country.

Jean-Guy Afrika, Chief Executive Officer of the Rwanda Development Board said: “We are proud of what this partnership has achieved over many years of collaboration. It broke new ground for tourism boards around the world, driving awareness and visitation for Rwandan tourism at a pace traditional campaigns could never match. And whilst we are now focused on expanding that momentum into new sports and new markets, we remain grateful to Arsenal for its support, partnership, and shared belief in Rwanda’s story over the past eight years. We look forward to continuing our relationship with the wider Kroenke Sports C Entertainment Group through our recent partnerships with the LA Rams and So-Fi Stadium in Los Angeles, and we remain a fully committed and engaged partner of Arsenal’s men’s and women’s teams for the remainder of the season. We wish them all the very best in their continuing quest for even more sporting success in the months ahead.”

Richard Garlick, Arsenal’s Chief Executive Officer said: “Our first ever sleeve partnership with Visit Rwanda has been a significant journey. Over many years, we’ve worked together to raise global awareness of Rwanda’s tourism and conservation efforts and built many new connections with our supporters across Africa. The commitment and support of Visit Rwanda throughout our partnership has played an important role in driving forward our ambitions – helping us invest in our long-term vision to win major trophies, in a financially sustainable way. We thank the Rwanda Development Board for their partnership and what we’ve delivered together.”

VISIT RWANDA LANDS IN LOS ANGELES https://rdb.rw/visit-rwanda-lands-in-los-angeles/ Mon, 29 Sep 2025 12:55:50 +0000 https://rdb.rw/?p=12513 Visit Rwanda Becomes the Exclusive Jersey Patch Sponsor for the Clippers, as well as Official Sponsor and Coffee Sponsor of Intuit Dome

Visit Rwanda Enters Multi-Year Sponsorship Agreement with Los Angeles Rams, SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park

LOS ANGELES – Visit Rwanda – the official tourism brand of the Rwanda Development Board – announced today long-term engagements with two Los Angeles’ professional sports teams, the LA Clippers and Los Angeles Rams.  This marks the first time an African tourism brand has established sponsorship across both the NBA and the NFL, further expanding Visit Rwanda’s presence in sports to the U.S.

Visit Rwanda adds these new sponsorships to its global sports portfolio, which already includes deals with Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), and Atlético de Madrid, along with an academy partnership with FC Bayern Munich.

“Sport connects people, uniting communities through shared values of excellence and aspiration. Through sponsorships with the LA Clippers and LA Rams, Rwanda and Los Angeles unite to promote the spirit of the game” said Jean-Guy Afrika, Rwanda Development Board CEO. “This engagement enables us to export Rwanda’s unrivaled natural beauty and extraordinary biodiversity to the people of Los Angeles as well as NBA and NFL fans everywhere.”

As part of the engagement, Visit Rwanda will become the exclusive jersey patch sponsor of the Clippers as well as the coffee sponsor of Intuit Dome. The Visit Rwanda brand will be the exclusive sponsor logo on all game and practice jerseys, both at home and on the road. In addition, Visit Rwanda will become an official tourism sponsor of the Clippers and builds on the team’s efforts to support youth development and promote basketball globally. The multi-year engagement will include community activations in both the Los Angeles-area and Rwanda, including court refurbishments and coaching clinics.

This sponsorship builds on the NBA’s broader commitment to globalize the game. The league has invested in developing basketball internationally for more than four decades, including by creating the Basketball Africa League (BAL), a partnership with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) featuring 12 club teams from across Africa that completed its fifth season in June 2025.  Since the BAL launched in 2021, the league has played games across the continent, including at the BK Arena in Rwanda. This exciting initiative provides young people with pathways to learn the game, develop their potential, and experience the values of teamwork and community. “There is tremendous confidence in the future of Africa, a continent with 11 of the 20 fastest-growing economies in the world,” said Gillian Zucker, CEO of Halo Sports and Entertainment. “In just five years, more than 40% of the world’s youth will live in Africa — a digitally connected generation, passionate about sport and basketball, and eager for opportunity. We’ve seen that energy across the continent, including in Rwanda where the NBA and BAL are helping to create meaningful pathways for young people. The energy that has brought the league to Rwanda has made this sponsorship a natural fit — one that is focused on growing the game and creating opportunities for young people.”

During the engagement, the Clippers will contribute to the refurbishment of a basketball court in Rwanda. The San Diego Clippers, the team’s G League affiliate, will also host youth coaches from Rwanda for training sessions in San Diego each year. The Clippers will also send its youth basketball coaches to Rwanda for clinics and offer virtual coaching sessions with coaches from Rwanda to discuss training techniques and youth development to help elevate talent within the country.  Klutch Sports served as the agency for the Clippers’ jersey patch.

In addition, Visit Rwanda will become an official international tourism sponsor of the Los Angeles Rams, SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park, the largest urban mixed-use development under construction in the Western United States.  SoFi Stadium, Hollywood Park and Intuit Dome are all located in Inglewood, California separated by Century Boulevard.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to have Visit Rwanda sponsor SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park,” said Otto Maly, President, Kroenke Holdings. “SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park were built to be the World Stage and a true international destination.  We are pleased to have the Rwanda Development Board choose to promote tourism and travel to Rwanda here at Hollywood Park, which will host a historic string of global events over the next few years.”

As part of the sponsorship, Visit Rwanda will be the entitlement sponsor of two distinct spaces within SoFi Stadium – the West Owners Club on Level 2 and the Level 3 North Canyon Basin.  The West Owners Club on Level 2, is one of the most premium spaces in the Stadium and the North Canyon Basin is adjacent to the Rams entertainment stage. Visit Rwanda will be able to highlight the natural beauty of their country through innovative design elements.

Visit Rwanda will also receive digital advertising time on SoFi Stadium’s acclaimed Infinity Screen as well as LEDs and IPTVs within the stadium and across Hollywood Park.  These advertisements will appear during Rams games and non-NFL events.

“As we look to grow the Los Angeles Rams into a global brand, we are committed to identifying commercial opportunities that help us expand our reach internationally,” said Kevin Demoff, Los Angeles Rams President.  “This sponsorship not only builds on Visit Rwanda’s long-standing relationship with Arsenal but also gives us a unique opportunity to have a presence in Africa, building on our efforts across Asia, Australia, the Middle East and Mexico.”

FC Bayern strengthens Academy in Kigali  https://rdb.rw/fc-bayern-strengthens-academy-in-kigali/ Fri, 08 Aug 2025 12:25:39 +0000 https://rdb.rw/?p=12391 Next phase of Rwandan partnership focused on talent development

Kigali, Rwanda – August 8, 2025 FC Bayern Munich and the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) are pleased to announce a new three-year agreement until 2028 that marks a strategic evolution of their partnership.  The new arrangement transitions the relationship away from a commercial sponsorship to a dedicated partnership focusing on football development in Rwanda through the expansion of the FC Bayern Youth Academy in Kigali.

Jan-Christian Dreesen, CEO of FC Bayern Munich, stated: „In constructive talks about our future direction, we agreed that a very special part of our relationship with RDB was the developmental nature of our work in Kigali through the FC Bayern Academy. We are therefore transforming our commercial partnership into a talent programme and expand the FC Bayern Academy in Kigali together with the RDB as both a football and social initiative. This remains perfectly aligned to our strategic objective of developing playing talent in Africa.”

Jean-Guy Afrika, CEO of RDB, said: “The success of the FC Bayern Academy in Kigali is a great example of what strategic sports partnerships can achieve. As we enter a new phase, we are refocusing our resources to accelerate sports development, with emphasis on talent identification, coaching excellence, and sports infrastructure.  This continued partnership with FC Bayern helps ensure that talent development remains anchored in our broader vision to position Rwanda as a global hub for tourism, investment, and high-performance sport.”

Just recently, two promising Rwandan footballers, Ndayishimiye Barthazar and David Okoce, were selected to join the prestigious U19 FC Bayern World Squad for its 2025 edition, marking a significant milestone for Rwanda’s burgeoning sports development and highlighting the success of the FC Bayern Academy in Rwanda.

40 Baby Gorillas to Be Named at Kwita Izina 2025 https://rdb.rw/40-baby-gorillas-to-be-named-at-kwita-izina-2025/ Wed, 06 Aug 2025 10:14:17 +0000 https://rdb.rw/?p=12381 On Friday, 5 September 2025, Rwanda will celebrate the 20th edition of Kwita Izina, the country’s flagship Gorilla Naming Ceremony, at the foothills of Volcanoes National Park in Kinigi.

This year, 40 baby mountain gorillas will be named, including 18 born in 2024.

Rooted in the centuries-old Rwandan tradition of naming newborns, Kwita Izina was officially introduced in 2005 to celebrate Rwanda’s conservation achievements, engage communities, and inspire global awareness.

Over the past 20 years, Kwita Izina has become one of Africa’s leading events on conservation and sustainable tourism, attracting global icons, conservationists, and thousands of attendees annually. Since 2005, 397 baby gorillas have been named.

The theme for this year, “A legacy of community centered conservation, securing a sustainable future for all,” highlights the vital role of communities, rangers, and researchers in protecting Rwanda’s biodiversity.

Highlights of Kwita Izina 2025

To support the restoration of Volcanoes National Park, RDB, through the Rwanda Nature Foundation, will launch a  crowdfunding platform on 6 September to raise funds for the restoration of Volcanoes National Park, ensuring a healthier, expanded habitat for the endangered mountain gorillas.

The platform will offer individuals and organisations worldwide a direct way to contribute to mountain gorilla protection and habitat restoration.

Community Recognition

As with every edition, this year’s ceremony will honour the local communities and rangers who continue to play a vital role in the survival of Rwanda’s mountain gorillas.

Ahead of Kwita Izina, a smart green agricultural project will be launched in Musanze District as part of this year’s Tourism Revenue Share Programme, alongside additional donations to benefit communities living around Rwanda’s other national parks.

In celebration of this milestone year, a series of events will take place across the country to showcase conservation efforts, engage stakeholders, and highlight Rwanda’s natural beauty.

Kwita Izina 20 Event Calendar:

  • 29 August: Community Project Launch in Kinigi, Musanze District
  • 3–14 September: Countrywide Familiarization Trips for International Media and Tour Operators
  • 3- 4 September: Community sports activities and concert in Musanze

  • 397 gorillas have been named since 2005
  • Over Rwf 18 billion invested in 1,000+ community projects through the Tourism Revenue Sharing Programme

RDB Chief Tourism Officer, Irène Murerwa, said:

“We are excited to celebrate 20 years of Kwita Izina—a ceremony that has become a symbol of conservation, community, and culture in Rwanda. Thanks to the unwavering dedication and support of the government of Rwanda, partners and communities,  the mountain gorilla population in the Virunga Massif has increased from 880 in 2012 to over 1,063 today. This success highlights the impact of community-based conservation and strategic partnerships.

Through initiatives like the Tourism Revenue Sharing Programme, which allocates 10% of tourism income back to local communities, we have improved schools, roads, and access to clean water. This demonstrates that when conservation benefits communities, nature thrives. As we celebrate this milestone, we reaffirm our shared duty to protect biodiversity and create a sustainable future for generations to come.”

Kwita Izina continues to define Rwanda’s leadership in responsible tourism, blending tradition, innovation, and community ownership to protect the only species of great apes.

About Kwita Izina

The Kwita Izina gorilla naming ceremony is modelled off a centuries-old tradition in which Rwandans name their children in the presence of family and friends. For three decades before the first official gorilla naming ceremony, park rangers and researchers named Rwanda’s mountain gorilla babies to monitor each gorilla in their family and habitat.

In 2005, Rwanda began officially naming mountain gorillas in what has become a global celebration of nature. By giving a name to these majestic primates, they are given the value they undoubtedly deserve.
