The Eiger Is Quieter Than You Think: A Leap Forward in Drone Acoustics

Imagine a drone designed to be barely noticeable, even in environments sensitive to noise. Not just a vision for the future, it’s happening now. RigiTech’s latest acoustic tests reveal that the Eiger UAV is one of the quietest drones in its category, with noise levels lower than many common urban sounds. This breakthrough reinforces Eiger’s potential as a sustainable and community-friendly solution for medical logistics.

Extensive testing was conducted per FAA acoustic protocols, measuring sound exposure at various distances and under different flight conditions. The results show that during cruise flight, the longest phase of a delivery, the Eiger emits only 51 to 55 decibels when measured 135 meters from the flight path. That is quieter than a typical conversation.

Even during hover or vertical flight phases, where sound levels naturally rise, the Eiger remains within the range of everyday sounds. Only during takeoff and landing, brief and localised events, does the noise level approach that of household appliances like a blender or power tool.

Key Findings

A visual comparison with familiar sounds helps put these numbers into context. The Eiger in cruise flight is quieter than traffic, quieter than a vacuum cleaner, and even quieter than casual conversation in a busy office. This means Eiger can operate in populated areas without disturbing communities, a key factor for the large-scale adoption of drone logistics.

Why It Matters

Reducing drone noise is not just about performance. It directly affects how these technologies are accepted by the public and how easily they can be integrated into everyday environments.
Low noise levels are critical for operations in noise-sensitive areas, particularly for healthcare deliveries around hospitals and laboratories, where maintaining a quiet environment is essential.

This advancement supports RigiTech’s mission to enable reliable, sustainable and unobtrusive medical delivery networks. The Eiger now offers not only long-range performance and high payload capacity, but also the discretion and environmental consideration needed to operate in real-world conditions.

Every flight we make saves time. Sometimes, it saves lives. Now, it does so more quietly than ever.

Lausanne, Switzerland. 22 October, 2024 – Swiss manufacturer RigiTech proudly announces the validation of its integrated drone delivery systems by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). This milestone aligns with RigiTech’s mission to operate within safe and controlled parameters, preventing accidents and undesired actions. Through rigorous design verification, RigiTech ensures the safety and reliability of its unmanned aerial systems (UAS) by validating the design of its enhanced containment technology.

Understanding Design Verification

Design verification is a meticulous process of evaluating and validating drone design elements to ensure they meet stringent safety and performance standards. It encompasses not only the verification of drone functionality under normal conditions but also its ability to handle unexpected situations without compromising safety.

Enhanced Containment Overview

Enhanced containment refers to advanced safety measures and fail-safe mechanisms designed to prevent drones from leaving the defined operational volume and ground risk buffer zone. This is required when the severity of an accident outside the operational volume and ground buffer zone is higher than inside. Urban routes, during which the drone flies between cities, for example, present a higher risk of incidents near densely populated areas, as opposed to a rural operation in which the drone flies over sparsely populated areas. Enhanced containment makes sure the drone stays within the defined bounds during the entire flight, ensuring they can be safely controlled or stopped without causing harm to people, property, or the environment.

The Importance of Design Verification in Enhanced Containment

  • Safety Assurance: The primary goal of design verification is to ensure that drones operate safely. By thoroughly testing and validating each design element, manufacturers can identify and mitigate potential risks before deployment.
  • Regulatory Compliance: With the increasing use of drones, regulatory bodies have established stringent guidelines for safe operations. Design verification helps manufacturers comply with these regulations, avoiding legal issues and ensuring public safety.
  • Operational Efficiency: Verified designs lead to more efficient drone operations: Once verified, these reliable safety mechanisms allow operators to obtain authorisations faster and easier, as the technology is quickly accepted in all EASA countries.

RigiTech's Enhanced Containment Technology

EASA has verified that RigiTech’s sophisticated architecture ensures safety even in long-range operations. Developed and tested for long-range Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations, RigiTech’s technology integrates advanced onboard avionics, as well as the RigiCloud and Edge Node software. While EASA guidance material tends to focus on radio-based communications for short-range missions, RigiTech has tested and verified redundant 3G/LTE communications, supporting long-range operations (the Eiger can travel up to 100 km). This comprehensive architecture allows RigiTech customers to rely on an independent failsafe system that ensures safety, even on complex BVLOS routes. “At RigiTech, we develop our products by having a regulatory focus, thus putting safety as our top priority,” said Alejandro Del Estal, Head of Flight Operations.

The Design Verification Process

RigiTech’s design verification process involves several stages:

  1. Requirement Analysis and Risk Assessment: This stage involves defining the safety and performance criteria that the drone must meet, and identifying potential risks and designing measures to mitigate them.
  2. The next step is Design Evaluation, which includes assessing the drone’s design elements to ensure alignment with the defined requirements.
  3. Testing and Validation require conducting rigorous tests under various conditions to evaluate performance and safety features.
  4. Finally, the last stage is Documentation and Reporting, which means maintaining detailed records of the verification process and outcomes to ensure transparency and traceability.

This process ensures the safety and reliability of drone operations, builds public trust, and supports the sustainable growth of the drone industry. In line with this process, RigiTech conducts periodic rigorous testing of its software and hardware to guarantee the safety of its drone technology. And by prioritising design verification, RigiTech contributes to safer skies and more effective drone deliveries.

In the realm of aviation and drone technology, acronyms are more than just shorthand; they’re the language of the skies. From UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) and UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System) to RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System), these terms pave the way for understanding the complexities of aerial operations. Among these, one acronym stands out for its significance in expanding the capabilities of drone technology: BVLOS, or “Beyond Visual Line Of Sight.”

BVLOS refers to drone operations where the operator can no longer maintain direct visual contact with the drone. This is contrasted with VLOS (Visual Line Of Sight) operations, where the drone remains within the operator’s sight. The transition from VLOS to BVLOS represents a leap in operational scope and complexity, enabling drones to undertake longer and more automated missions, far beyond the limitations of the operator’s visual range.

This capability opens up possibilities for drone usage, from comprehensive aerial surveys and remote inspections to delivering goods in inaccessible areas. However, with great potential comes great responsibility. Navigating the regulatory landscape of BVLOS operations is crucial, as these rules vary significantly across different countries and regions, tailored to ensure safety and efficiency in the airspace.

BVLOS is fundamental to drone delivery. For other drone applications, such as mapping or surveillance, VLOS operations within a few hundred metres of the operator already provide a good business case by reducing time and manual workload. However, in drone logistics, the key objective is to automate transport and eliminate the need for personnel to accompany deliveries; short-range VLOS operations simply don’t make sense.

At RigiTech, we are at the forefront of leveraging BVLOS technology to enhance drone delivery services, having obtained BVLOS authorisations in 15 countries around the world and counting. Our expertise not only lies in operating within these regulatory frameworks but also in guiding our clients through the maze of regulations specific to their country. By partnering with us, businesses and organisations can unlock the full potential of drone technology, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in aerial logistics.

Bucharest, Romania. July 29, 2024 – RigiTech’s Eiger drone is leading healthcare logistics innovation, playing a crucial role in a groundbreaking initiative by MedLife and SKYY Network at the 2024 Electric Castle Festival. MedLife, a prominent private medical operator in Central and Eastern Europe, has launched the first mobile STD test centre in Central and South-Eastern Europe at the festival. This initiative encourages young people to have fun responsibly by offering free testing for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). To ensure the swift processing of collected samples, MedLife has integrated RigiTech’s Eiger drone system into their operations, further enhancing the efficiency and reach of their services.

RigiTech Flies with MedLife and SKYY Network in Romania

Located in Bonțida, Romania, the Electric Castle music festival took place from July 18-21, featuring artists like REMA, Marc Rebillet and Sean Paul, among others. This 24-hour music festival also features a camping site, thus making medical attention a key component of the event’s organisation. The Eiger drone is designed for high-efficiency laboratory logistics, capable of travelling up to 100 km and carrying a maximum payload of 150 biological samples per flight. For this year’s edition of Electric Castle, SKYY Network and MedLife have leveraged this advanced system  to ensure that medical samples are quickly transported from the festival site to the lab, enabling same-day results accessible directly via the MedLife app.

“The future of laboratory logistics inevitably demands integrated technology, and we are proud to see our approach to drone delivery succeed in this fully-connected system, having a direct impact and helping young people stay safe,” said David Rovira, Chief Business Officer and co-founder at RigiTech.

RigiTech Flies with MedLife and SKYY Network in Romania

“Testing for sexually transmitted diseases is still a taboo subject in Romanian society, a fact confirmed by the conclusions of the latest national study on this subject, conducted at MedLife’s request. More than 90% of young people do not have enough information to identify and protect themselves from sexually transmitted diseases, and this prompted us not only to come directly into their environment but also to take action. In this sense, we mobilised our resources and set up an STD testing centre right at the festival. To make the response time more efficient, we used the drone transport system for biological samples. This way, tested participants will be able to access the results on the same day, directly in the app, giving them the opportunity to make the best decisions and have fun responsibly during the festival and beyond,” said Ina Ilie, MedLife Communications Director.

In addition to the testing initiative, MedLife offers attendees the opportunity to engage with medical professionals in a relaxed setting. The “Speed Dating” sessions with urologists, gynaecologists, psychiatrists, and psychologists, along with “Hot Talks” addressing taboo topics, ensure comprehensive support for the festival-goers.
