The Community College of Beaver County is under a cyberattack, with unknown bad actors encrypting all college data and demanding ransom payments to lift it.

“We came to campus this morning, the first day of spring break, and our IT department notified us that they received a ransom note and that we had been under cyberattack,” said Leslie Tennant, CCBC’s vice president of communications.

The so-called ransomware attack has encrypted, or completely blocked, the college from using its computer systems. It’s now unable to access things like grades, transcripts and all of the college’s financial information.

The annual cyber threat intelligence report, shared with members of the Jisc cybersecurity community, reveals that while the number of significant cyber incidents fell from 17 in 2024 to seven in 2025, the remaining attacks required more advanced defences. Total incidents, however, rose from over 11,000 to more than 16,000, with higher education providers being the primary targets.

The University of Phoenix has confirmed a significant data breach impacting nearly 3.5 million current and former students, employees, faculty, and suppliers. The incident, which occurred in November, is attributed to the Clop ransomware group, as reported by Silicon Angle.

The Clop ransomware group exploited a previously unknown vulnerability in Oracle Corp.’s E-Business Suite, gaining unauthorized access in August 2025. This allowed them to steal sensitive data, including full names, contact details, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and bank account information. Clop is known for large-scale data-extortion attacks, often targeting zero-day vulnerabilities in enterprise software. This breach is notable as one of the largest in 2025, affecting a substantial number of individuals and highlighting the risks associated with third-party software vulnerabilities.

Infoblox’s report also revealed that the campaign operators took steps to hide their tracks, such as changing the attack links often and using services like Cloudflare to mask where their servers were located. However, an initial tip from a security professional at one of the targeted institutions helped Infoblox begin an investigation.

But the school immediately reported itself to the Office of the Data Protection Authority for a data breach immediately, cooperated with its investigation and has been ordered to update systems to improve its security, which it has completed.

The authority found that the college had failed to secure remote access to its computers, and had used a weak password – without activating multi-factor authentication – for an administrator account, and was vulnerable to a ‘brute force attack’.

The University of Pennsylvania said Tuesday it is confident that a data breach attack in which hackers allege they accessed large volumes of personal donor, student, and alumni information has been “contained” and the school has hired cybersecurity professionals to help investigate.

While it’s been reported that hackers allege accessing data on 1.2 million students, donors, and alumni, Penn said it could not confirm that number and is still investigating the material that was accessed.

“However, we do know that the stolen credentials were used to access systems related to Penn’s development and alumni activities,” the university said on an information page about the incident posted Tuesday evening.

While businesses collectively paid $814 million in ransomware in 2024, one sector saw attacks surge 23% in the first half of 2025 alone: higher education. This sharp increase reflects the challenge of running secure operations in open, collaborative environments.

Higher education institutions are prime targets for ransomware attacks due to their open, decentralized IT environments, limited cybersecurity resources, and the high value of the data they store, including proprietary research, personal information, and financial records. With a critical need for system uptime to support academic workflows, universities are often pressured to respond quickly to attacks, making them especially attractive to cybercriminals. Earlier this year, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center suffered a breach that exposed the personal data of over 1.4 million individuals, including names, birth dates, addresses, Social Security numbers, and driver’s license numbers.

Actual payments dropped even more steeply, and while costs remain substantial, Sophos’ data shows the overall ransom market in education is shrinking: “In lower education, payments dropped to $800,000 from $6.60 million, while higher education saw a decline from $4.41 million to $463,000.”

Educational institutions are particularly vulnerable to cyberattacks because they store a gold mine of sensitive information. If a hacker can access an educational database, they can get personal information, such as social security numbers, names, birth dates, credit card numbers, bank account numbers and a variety of demographic information. Non-personal data, such as funding information and sensitive research data, can also be extremely valuable.

But it’s not just what schools have. It’s also what they lack. Many campuses still rely on outdated hardware and legacy software systems that were never built to handle today’s threat landscape. Others prioritize flashy tech programs to attract students while neglecting to protect their network infrastructure. If cyber resilience isn’t a key part of a school’s risk and threat management strategy, they will continue to be an easy target for cybercriminals.

In recent years, colleges and universities have faced an evolving array of cybersecurity challenges. But one threat is showing signs of becoming both more frequent and more politically charged: hacktivism.

Hacktivism, or cyberattacks driven by political, ideological, or social motivations, is not new to higher education. In the past decade, campuses have been hit by everything from website defacements to distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) campaigns aimed at disrupting events. In some cases, these attacks have been conducted by students or alumni; in others, they’ve been launched by global actors with no direct tie to the institution.

However, recent events suggest that higher ed leaders can no longer view hacktivism as an occasional nuisance. Instead, it is fast becoming a persistent, high-impact risk.

The joint bulletin and accompanying reference guides provide information about the risk environment on campuses, including steps institutions can take to mitigate dangers associated with foreign talent recruitment programs, overseas research collaborations, espionage activities of foreign intelligence services, and cyber intrusion. In addition to outlining best practices for institutions and individual researchers, the materials encourage institutions to report suspicious activities and concerns to the relevant U.S. authorities.

On the night of August 19, the IT infrastructure of the Salesian Pontifical University (UPS) was the victim of a serious cyber attack that rendered the University’s website and all digital services temporarily inaccessible. The incident resulted in an immediate shutdown of online activities, causing inconvenience to students, faculty, and administrative staff. We don’t know if it was ransomware, but the words “assess the damage and initiate recovery operations” in the press release suggest so.

One of the reasons higher education is such a frequent target for cyberattackers is that educational networks are open by design. That’s counter to the zero-trust philosophy but central to the higher education philosophy that promotes collaboration, free thought and transparency. Those things aren’t likely to change anytime soon.

So, if higher education networks are going to be more open and vulnerable, packed with users who may or may not have great cyber hygiene, there are going to be breaches. The goal becomes limiting the damage from those breaches.

A threat to the University of St. Thomas’ servers led the school to shut down some of its systems on Tuesday, cutting students off from their course schedules and financial aid information just days before the start of the semester.

The disruption occurred after an unauthorized party tried to hack into the private university in Montrose’s servers, Interim President Dempsey Rosales Acosta said in a Wednesday email to students and employees. The university has not found any indication that university information was compromised, but IT teams quarantined the affected servers “out of an abundance of caution,” he said.

Students at a major private university say they have been unable to enrol in classes, forced to repeat units and placed at risk of losing their graduate jobs because of online system problems lingering from a cyberattack more than six months ago.

Notre Dame University’s 12,000 students and staff lost access to several online platforms in January after it was hit by a ransomware attack in which hackers stole students’ details, HECS information and tax file numbers.

A cyber attack temporarily brought down several institutional services of the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI). The case was registered around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday (12) and, until this Sunday (13), the systems continue to present instabilities.

In a statement, the university reported that technical teams of the Information Technology Superintendence (STI) immediately began diagnostic procedures. Initially, it was identified by one of the infrastructure servers that some machines had crashes due to the depletion of resources, especially memory. One of the database servers even reached 100% of the storage capacity.
