This is the supposed king of slapstick comedy, and I finally decided I should catch up on this classic. My loyalty remains with the Hot Shots, but Airplane is good too. Surprisingly, most jokes aged well. Especially the subtitles!

This seems like an exemplary French movie: the story might be basic and borderline clumsy, but it is told with so much soul. The characters are realistic and have depth. The overlaps between modernity and history were also neat, particularly the confirmation of how people lived too fast back then.

Four stories in a short time provide ample room for a lot of action. There are only short pauses between action scenes. The animation style enabled the director to focus on fights, and it paid off. A few rare moments are stretched, but the rest is solid entertainment. Just the Bullet’s name is confusing.

This might be one of the best biopics I have ever seen, and it doesn’t even pale in comparison with completely made-up stories. I would have never guessed that the trio is playing themselves, that they are not professional actors. The plot is very lively and funny, while its style is reminiscent of Trainspotting and Guy Ritchie movies. However, these small events are nicely woven into a bigger narrative. Next time I’m watching it, it would be interesting to guess which parts have actually happened.

This story felt fresh, and the movie has properly thrilled me. The long build-up didn’t feature much acting, which was justified, but then there was action and acting in the final third. I’m not in the business of guessing twists, so I didn’t anticipate that turn. I have a slight feeling that some earlier moments didn’t fit it very well, but nothing obvious to me. And the final scene was a good touch, especially in contrast to an opposite story in a train in a different movie.

A captivating story of a young barman caught in the wheels. Memorable characters, nice acting, a believable plot, and a cat. The makers didn’t take the film too seriously, and this worked out quite nice.

Many movies that are based on real-life events feel underwhelming to me. I start with an expectation of a big story “like in the cinema” but see just normal events. Fortunately, this movie didn’t create any false expectations, so its rather simple story has touched me deeply. I don’t recall hearing music, and the camera work was not too impressive, relying on a single trick, so all the praise goes to the great acting! “And the cute dog,” I would have said, were I not a cat person.
