Wednesday, 17 July 2024, France – UnaBiz, Massive Internet of Things (IoT) service provider and integrator, announces the launch of Sigfox Atlas Sparks Beta, a revolutionary addition to its geolocation suite, designed to enhance asset tracking in the Supply Chain and Logistics sector. This next-generation service builds upon the success of Sigfox Atlas Wifi ML, further cementing UnaBiz’s commitment to innovation and efficiency.

Supply Chain and Logistics market leaders are constantly striving to improve the visibility of their asset fleets. Tracking hundreds of thousands of assets effectively is a complex challenge where every dollar counts. While low-cost trackers are available, they often fall short in terms of location accuracy. Sigfox Atlas Sparks addresses this issue head-on.

Introducing Sigfox Atlas Sparks

Sigfox Atlas Sparks is a unique, next-generation geolocation service that enhances UnaBiz’s world-leading location-based service capabilities with patented Machine Learning algorithms. This groundbreaking service targets customers with large fleets of asset trackers by significantly improving the accuracy of Sigfox-only low-cost trackers through integration with a small fleet of Smart WiFi trackers.

Advancing Track & Trace in the Supply Chain

With Atlas Sparks, logistics players can enhance the accuracy of their entire fleet of trackers by equipping 20% of them with Smart WiFi trackers and 80% simple, Sigfox-only low-cost trackers, without built-in geolocation capabilities. As data from both types of trackers is aggregated in the cloud, our patented Machine Learning algorithms analyze their communication patterns. The simpler low-cost trackers are then clustered with the smarter WiFi trackers based on their “0G radio signatures.”

When 0G-only trackers are deployed, they begin transmitting data with their radio signatures. UnaBiz Geolocation system matches these radio signatures with known patterns to accurately locate simple low-cost trackers. This innovative approach ensures that even if only 20% of your assets are Smart, you can still locate a mixed fleet of devices with a level of accuracy equivalent to previous implementations using 100% of smart trackers enhancing your data accuracy and optimising your entire fleet of trackers without incurring exorbitant costs.

Evolving to Enable Massive IoT

Sigfox is continuously evolving to enable Massive IoT at the lowest Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). By applying the “Less is More” principle, Sigfox Atlas Sparks empowers asset owners to extend their reach and collect data from lower-cost assets including pallets, crates, parcels, and more, using Sigfox-only low-cost trackers.

Key Customers Benefits:

  1. Enhanced Accuracy of Low-Cost Trackers: Achieve greater accuracy and visibility on large fleets by equipping 20% with Smart WiFi trackers and the remaining 80% with Sigfox-only low-cost trackers.
  2. Cost Reduction: Lower the TCO of large-scale asset management by 20% to 30% overall, and enhance location data accuracy equivalent to that of a pure WiFi-based fleet of trackers.
  3. Compatibility: The new service is compatible with existing solutions such as “SeeGALE Card”, a reusable card-type device capable of detecting the location and opening status of products during transportation developed by Kyocera Communication Systems Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “KCCS”) and ALPS ALPINE’s GERI tracker, ensuring quick implementation with existing systems.

Friday, 7 June 2024, South AfricaSigfox SA has been selected as the network to support South Africa’s transition to smart water meters.

Sigfox SA, a robust and exceptionally low-power technology, was selected by the National Treasury as the network to underpin the new smart water meter ecosystem. The tender, commonly known as “RT29” awarded to various System Integrators, will see existing meters adapted or replaced to become smart meters to improve revenue collection and service delivery. All the new meters will run on the nationwide Sigfox IoT network.

Greg Rood, CEO of Sigfox South Africa, says: “Water is a basic human right, and we are proud to be associated with provision of such essential services, supporting both revenue collections and provision. The fact that the National Treasury has entrusted Sigfox to monitor and support over 15,000,000 smart water meters in the country underlines how robust the technology is. We expect this to be a catalyst to further grow our local IoT and system integrator ecosystem.”

Rood explains that Sigfox was selected to support the smart water meters due to the extensive network coverage, robustness of the technology, low power consumption and the SLAs associated with Sigfox. Sigfox 0G is a preferred technology for utilities around the world, and has an established track record of supporting large commercial utility deployments in South Africa. The superior range and penetration of the advanced Sigfox ultra-narrowband (UNB) signal makes it the ideal connectivity choice to reach meters that are often installed in challenging environments.

“The Sigfox SA network already covers 91% of the South African population. Should there be a need to extend or densify the network, this can be achieved quickly and cost-effectively,” he says.

Sigfox technology also overcomes potential power challenges – smart water meters typically lack access to external power and rely on batteries. Sigfox’s low power network technology – designed to support IoT at scale – means a device can run on the same battery for over 10 years.

Rood says: “The technology has an extremely low power reliance. The smart meter devices are sealed and waterproof, with batteries built in. Our devices will last for over 10 years at one reading a day, which far exceeds the three-year lifespan stipulated on the tender. Due to this extended lifespan, it’s practically an ‘install and forget’ scenario, which cuts costs and optimises resources. Sigfox’s benefits also include ease of installation, accuracy and reliability. And the fact that the network is independent means there is no reliance on Wi-Fi or fibre in the ground.”

He notes that Sigfox is the only mass coverage network underpinned by an SLA. “This enhances reliability and delivers unprecedented ROI for municipalities,” he says.

“The transition to smart meters supported by Sigfox SA will mean improved collections for municipalities, real-time and accurate billing for customers, and improved management of increasingly scarce water resources,” Rood says.

Thursday, 02 May 2024, France – UnaBiz, Massive Internet of Things (IoT) service provider and integrator, announces performance evolution on Sigfox 0G technology, reducing device energy consumption by up to 18 times. The transformative enhancement aims to deliver a significant efficiency boost for Sigfox-based solutions, empowering developers, 0G Operators and major customers alike.

Central to this advancement is the integration of a 600bps data rate across its global 0G network, coupled with the introduction of the N=1 repetition mode. Both innovations collectively enable devices to operate at unprecedented levels of efficiency, reducing energy consumption by up to 18 times compared to the previous standard of 100bps with N=3 repetition mode:

  • By adopting, on top of the existing 100bps infrastructure, the higher 600 bps data rate, solution makers can achieve 6 times reduction in energy consumption and improved transmission quality when devices are transmitting on the move.
  • By opting for minimal repetition – sending only 2 frames or even 1 frame, instead of 3, solution makers can enjoy further energy savings of 33% to 66%.

These optimisations not only extend battery life for sensor solutions significantly, enhancing reliability and longevity while opening up new business opportunities, they also introduce versatility in battery management for device and solution designers. Moreover, they enhance the performance for use cases requiring radio transmission efficiency beyond current implementations.

“With this technology update, we offer enhanced flexibility for our partners to optimise their solutions. Device battery requirements can vary greatly depending on needs like Facility Management, Metering, and Asset Tracking. With our latest network and device library updates, solution designers can now easily balance device lifetime and network performance for their specific use cases. Seamless transmission option selection eliminates the need for network resync, unlocking broader possibilities with Sigfox 0G technology,” explained Nicolas Chalbos, Head of Sigfox Innovation at UnaBiz.

Designing solutions with 600bps and/or n=1 repetitions

As with most IoT technologies, improvements in power efficiency bring advantages and considerations:

  • Transmitting at 600bps enhances communication speed (and reduces related power drain) and optimises even more the spectrum used by Sigfox 0G technology, but reduces the transmission budget by 8dB, impacting the range at which messages are received by Sigfox gateways.
  • Reducing message repetition from the default 3 to 1 also reduces spectrum use and overall power needed to transit, but may raise the possibility of incomplete data reception in areas with weaker network coverage.

Solutions designers, particularly those implementing 600bps and/or n=1 configurations, are encouraged to verify data transmission reliability in their deployment areas. If additional coverage is required, the global 0G network operators provide assistance and various solutions for coverage extension.

For more information regarding the benefits and considerations for your use cases, visit: https://github.com/sigfox-tech-radio/sigfox-ep-lib/wiki/selecting-the-best-sigfox-messages-parameters

Alexis Susset, CTO of UnaBiz said, “We are continuously evolving Sigfox 0G technology both for enterprises and the broader market in general. The new enhancements aim to improve UnaBiz’s technological ability to address IoT solution needs that rely on the key strength of our Sigfox 0G technology. Enabling 600bps data transmission and releasing our open-source device library, which includes options to control data transmission repetition, not only enhances energy management for devices but also improves reliability in use cases such as logistics, where the devices are transmitting while moving. We look forward to continuing to empower businesses and industries to address their challenges with our frugal, cost-effective, and energy-efficient technology and solutions.”

Connecting industrial logistics flows by IoT is mainly targeting two aspects: Of course monitoring the flow and condition of transported goods and at the same time accurately tracing the movements of involved returnable transport containers. For this purpose, the BOX ID software supports a broad range of both passive ident systems (like barcode, QR and RFID) as well as active IoT-devices, which are usually referred to as ‘trackers’. While practically any ident data source or IoT-device can be integrated with the BOX ID platform by either its data interfaces or the API, BOX ID also offers its customers a selected range of tracking devices that are natively integrated in the platform.

The central focus in selecting IoT-tracking devices is alyways on allowing operative deployments at a worldwide scale – both technically and economically. This means the desired fidelity of data, territorial coverage, installability, durability and battery lifetime must be aligned with housing size and of course both unit and operation cost. The LPWAN networks, like LoRa and Sigfox 0G technology, have initially opened up the mass applications for returnable transport packaging fleets, and the latter still is a benchmark in unit cost and longevity for logistic tracking applications.

“We have deployed 75,000 units so far, with a majority on the Sigfox 0G network and we have deliberately taken our time in expanding the cellular options in our tracker portfolio. Our utmost focus is on cost efficiency, scalability and lifetime.

Devices that rely purely on NB-IoT still face major limitations in the geographical availability of networks. So when it comes to devices using cellular networks, we currently see two strong categories for logistics applications: devices with combined LTE-M & NB-IoT for continent-wide applications and LTE-M or LTE-Cat1 for global ones” explains Dr. Wolfgang Vogl, Managing Director of BOX ID.

Newly added devices in BOX ID portfolio for asset tracking and worldwide shipment monitoring
(clockwise, starting top left: AOVX, SENSOS, KPN IoT, DigitalMatter)

Powerful asset trackers from DigitalMatter, AOVX and KPN South African device manufacturer DigitalMatter has been a leader in the field of cellular telematics and asset tracking IoT-devices for more than two decades and to date carries the most advanced and diversified portfolio of cellular IoT-devices. Highlights, available now directly with the BOX ID platform are the compact and cost-efficient LTE-M & NB-IoT asset tracker Barra and the mobile truck Bluetooth gateway Remora, allowing high-frequent tracking of trucks, trailers and load items over up to 10 years.

To widely enable very cost-sensitive applications with cellular devices – e.g. in sheet glass industry – BOX ID also will partner with the Chinese device manufacturer AOVX, which offers an extremely cost-optimized portfolio of powerful and reliable IoT-devices. The first addressed device is a LTE.Cat1 tracker with Wi-Fi and GPS localization, offering a great balance of device cost, longevity and coming with coherent coverage across the European continent.

From the IoT division of the Dutch telco KPN, a truly global asset tracker has been added to the portfolio of BOX ID. The KPN Global Tracker is based on LTE-M with 2G-Fallback and comes with global coverage plan from KPN-IoT providing global coverage with more than 600 networks worldwide and immediate access to the best M2M network available with non-steered roaming.

The SENOS label – a new device category of its own The fourth addition to BOX ID’s device portfolio is rather a new category of its own. It enables real-time monitoring of critical shipments worldwide without having to deal with reverse logistics of devices or data loggers. The functionality is the result of a collaboration with the innovative Sony spin-off SENSOS, which has developed an intelligent, cellular-connected shipping label the size of a credit card. It is designed for worldwide intermodal logistic applications and is also admitted to air transport on many top-tier cargo airlines already. Thanks to the seamless integration into the BOX ID Cloud software, exact localization, precise condition monitoring with respect to temperature, impacts and integrity of the packaging can be checked to the second.

Close relationships with customers around the world backed by international reselling partners The software provider is consistently expanding its distribution network to ensure that international customers outside the DACH region receive the best possible local support for the introduction and expansion of material flow automation with the BOX-ID software platform. Partners in following countries are available to date:

    • KPN IoT in Netherlands and Benelux
    • Sigfox Poland in Eastern Europe
    • SJI in South Korea and Japan
    • Thinxtra in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong
    • Unabiz in France, Taiwan and 70+ countries via its 0G network operators
    • Wanzl in EU, UK, US
Further reselling partners are sought for, especially with focus on the Americas

ST Microelectronics announced the OEM launch of STM32WL3x last week – a new cost-efficient chipset that allows developers, device and solution makers to create Sigfox-only devices easily. The sub-GHz wireless microcontroller (MCU) come with a new ultra-low-power radio and an updated S2-LP transceiver to democratize new sub-GHz apps.

What does this mean to Developers, Device & Solution Makers?

More cost-effective features-rich Sigfox-based devices and solutions can be created using this chipset, targeting smart metering, asset management, smart cities as well as various low-power IoT applications.
Developers get a short cut from PoC to final design thanks to hardware features targeting their applications, like the LC Sensor Controller and a familiar software ecosystem.

    What are the notable highlights?

    1. An innovation unique to the STM32WL3x is the presence of two radios, one dedicated to a low-power wake-up function. Designed for proximity detection, it only supports OOK modulation, has a continuous receiving mode (RX), and is compatible with a wide frequency band from 100 MHz to 2.4 GHz. As a result, it consumes a meager 4.2 µA, significantly less than what traditional radio consumes by an order of magnitude. For comparison, the regular sub-GHz module of the STM32WL3x needs 5.6 mA in RX mode, which is already considered an efficient device by today’s standards.

In simpler words: You can now design geofencing solutions that consumes way less power than before.

UnaBiz is working with developers to design new use-cases around STM32WL3x low-power wake-up function. Solutions designers who wish to create products with this function are encouraged to reach out to UnaBiz to discuss the features and their possible implementations.
    2. The regular radio in the STM32WL3x is an updated version of the S2-LP with support for (G)MSK, DBPSK, and DSSS on top of the traditional 4-(G)FSK, 2-(G)FSK, OOK, and ASK. Consequently, the device natively supports 802.15.4g and is compatible with 6LoWPAN, MBus, Sigfox, WiSUN, and KNX protocols.

It is important to note that the chipset is compliant with all Sigfox RC Zones.
    3. The STM32WL3x’s radio outperforms in both power power-efficiency and output power. In RX, it uses just 5.6 mA vs. 7 mA needed for the S2-LP. In transmitting mode (TX), it requires only 8 mA, while the S2-LP uses 10 mA. Additionally, it offers a greater output power at +20 dBm, surpassing the S2-LP at +16 dBm.
    4. Equipped with the STM32 Cortex M0+ MCU, the STM32WL3x enables developers to implement the new Sigfox Open Source Stack available here: https://github.com/sigfox-tech-radio/sigfox-ep-lib. This integration offers multiple benefits, such as the option for asynchronous execution over the traditional blocking one. Additionally, enhancing the device efficiency, it allows for customisation in the number of frames per message and the desired data rates, either 100bps or 600bps, individually tailored for each message depending on the capabilities of the Regional RC network.

More informations around options can be found here: https://github.com/sigfox-tech-radio/sigfox-ep-lib/wiki

Last but not least, as the Sigfox Open Source stack is fully configurable and lightweight, developers can use the remaining memory to embed directly the application in the STM32WL3x.

This affordable chipset strikes an impressive balance between cost and performance, especially in power consumption. Its simplicity and frugality will be the key factors of its success.
