Ping spikes and lag

We have seen an increase in reports of people experiencing high ping spikes and "lag" with their original SlimeVR trackers.
Please refrain from making support tickets for this issue whilst we figure out the root cause.


From what we gathered so far the issue started appearing about a month ago. There have not been any updates to our software or firmware in that time period, but we did test various older versions of our software, hardware and firmware to no avail.
We have narrowed it down to either 1 of 3 things:
1. A faulty windows update causing these spikes.
2. A meta quest update that affects wireless connectivity/network congestion.
3. A modem/router update that may be affecting things.

So far we are leaning towards option 2, as we have found in our testing that the lag spikes only appear once a headset is connected to the network.
And the issue itself does not appear to be coming from the trackers or the SlimeVR software itself.
We are still investigating and trying to find where this is coming from as this appears to be affecting more than just us.
Below are a list of steps that have helped about 60% of users out already depending on the modem type/make and model.
Modems of the brands: Spectrum, Asus and TPLink seem to be most commonly affected.

SlimeVR optimisations for router 2.4ghz WiFi settings:

  • set channel to 1, 11, or 6 (try one and see how it goes, then change to another if it gives bad results)
  • Set channel width to 20mhz (this reduces the chances of side-channel interference)
  • set to b/g/n or similar lower spec mode (if it is on b/g/n/ac or b/g/n/ax)
  • disable OFDMA on 2.4ghz, if possible
  • set security settings to WPA2 (often called WPA2 PSK)
