Upgrading to XCode 4.1.1

A quick tip around the upgrade:

Once you order the XCode 4.1.1 from App Store (free with OS X lion) and the status says “Installed” it actually does not upgrade existing XCode but rather just puts the installer file in “Applications” folder. Once you see the file in Finder double click it to install 4.1.1.

Upgrading to OS X Lion

While going through the upgrade i got to think if this is going to format my hdd. So here is my experience so far.

This is for upgrading from OS X Snow Leopard to OS X Lion

Strongly recommend to back your mac up using Time machine with an external hard drive or Time Capsule. I have a Seagate 500Gb external HDD that i use for my time machine.
Purchase OS X Lion from Mac App Store. ($29.99)
Once it’s finished downloading, mac will restart and will launch the OS X Lion Installer.
After you accept the licensing and other basic stuff you will be prompted to choose between 4 actions. Select the 2nd action (Install a New OS X Lion)
Follow through the install. (It may take up to 40 min to finish)
Mac restarts after successful install and you should have all your data and apps in tact.

Email Mashup and iPhone

I have tried Zymbra and Windows live mail as a desktop solution to aggregate my email accounts across Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL etc. With both these solutions or similar desktop email aggregators i found that they eat up your disk space and most of the time there will be weird error messages which does not make any sense to end users. On top of it, when accessing your email accounts on iPhone or other mobile devices you still have to go through setting up these multiple email accounts one by one and then accessing these accounts one by one separately. How convenient is this? First loose your disk space and then loose your sleep on those weird errors and finally go through the pain of accessing your email accounts one by one on your iPhone or other mobile device. So here is the solution:

Login to Gmail (by Google) and select “Mail Settings” from the top right hand corner and then click “Accounts and Import”.
For email accounts that do not allow free email sync using POP3 use the “Import Mail and Contacts” section. For email accounts that allow free sync using POP3 use “Check Mail using POP3” section. Here is a screenshot:

Setting up Gmail
Once you are done with this let Gmail sync and import ALL accounts. It may take couple hours for Gmail to sync all emails if you have couple thousand emails.
Go to your Gmail Inbox and select All. Then you will see a link which says “Select All messages. Click on that link. Then click the More option on the top and select “Mark as Read”. You unread email count goes down to 0 now.

On your iPhone setup just one Gmail account that you just configured. Now when you access your emails on your iphone or your desktop (using a browser) you can see messages from ALL email accounts at ONE single place!!

VMWare NAT and ICS on WiFi

While setting up a secure and working virtual server environment with it’s own MS AD, DNS, DHCP, IIS and File server etc which was going to run in my VMWare Workstation 7 running on Windows 7 Premium host, i stumbled on this unique problem of “no internet access” from the VMWare guest running Windows 2008. After googling for several hours and debugging this for a day i found a solution:

Note: This is more valid for folks running this setup on their laptop or desktops with a wireless connection. If you have a wired connection then things should be smooth.

So here is how to get it working:

Step 1 – Follow the guidelines as mentioned here

Step 2 – In the Windows 2008 guest OS make changes like these so that other guest OS running in the same virtual setup has a working network configuration (browse the internet, resolve names etc). Open Server Manager console and then DHCP server option to configure default gateway, DNS etc.
