While setting up a secure and working virtual server environment with it’s own MS AD, DNS, DHCP, IIS and File server etc which was going to run in my VMWare Workstation 7 running on Windows 7 Premium host, i stumbled on this unique problem of “no internet access” from the VMWare guest running Windows 2008. After googling for several hours and debugging this for a day i found a solution:

Note: This is more valid for folks running this setup on their laptop or desktops with a wireless connection. If you have a wired connection then things should be smooth.

So here is how to get it working:

Step 1 – Follow the guidelines as mentioned here

Step 2 – In the Windows 2008 guest OS make changes like these so that other guest OS running in the same virtual setup has a working network configuration (browse the internet, resolve names etc). Open Server Manager console and then DHCP server option to configure default gateway, DNS etc.
