There is something that has been bothering /a/ since I got done rewatching Gurren Laggan recently, but I'm not sure if it is something I'm on to or if it is just me getting older and or retarded. The show itself is still good overall, and the peaks far outweigh the low points like Episode 4, but what's bother is what would be outside of it. While it isn't exactly like older Super Robo shows like Toei Getter Robo or even the manga, it's clear part of the reason the show is able to work so good is in part thanks to having traces of that "DNA" mixed in with the style of Late-Gainax and in turn Trigger later on. Though as time goes on it seems that the latter aspect is discussed more rather than the former. Either from Trigger being more relevant due to its recency with most of its output, or from people largely not really caring about mecha anymore until a new Gundam series is announced. Though I'll admit I haven't watched anything made by Trigger since the TV LWA so anything else that has changed since then is something which I can't comment on, and I'm more concerned on the first aspect to begin with.

This is what's leading me to ask: Do people still care enough about the influences that made something that is a classic a classic, or is it in what comes after? While GL didn't exactly spawn any clones in its immediate wake, does this apply to other more significant shows? Are the reasons why something is seen as being good change over time, or do they remain the same?

>do people care about influences

Some do, sure, but I think most people just take the work for what it is and either enjoy it or don't. I think it can elevate a work to know that its author was influenced by another, personally.

>it's clear part of the reason the show is able to work so good is in part thanks to having traces of that "DNA" mixed in with the style of Late-Gainax and in turn Trigger later on.

Interestingly I think this kind of thing (a work being an admixture of its influences with some sort of original twist or style by the author) isn't as prevalent as it used to be at all, insofar as the average work is simply the former without much of the latter, if any. Maybe I'm just cynical but my impression is that making a synthesis of influences isn't really what's done; rather it's taking the good points from a few things and jamming them all together into a big sandwich without any condiments.

>Interestingly I think this kind of thing (a work being an admixture of its influences with some sort of original twist or style by the author) isn't as prevalent as it used to be at all,

I'd be inclined to agree with this. It's pretty easy to take a lot of the stuff that got popular in the otaku world in the late 90s / early 2000s and trace it back: You can say, Jun Maeda was heavily inspired by YU-NO, which was big part of what led to both his pre- and early-Key works, which were all part of a general shift in how "VNs" were approached that inspired Type-Moon to produce Tsukihime (and later Fate), which directly inspired 07th Expansion's Higurashi (Key can be cited there, too), and you can keep expanding out from different points from there. But the key part is that the things that people saw what worked, and then were inspired to go do the "next step" from there.

But if you look at something like the "isekai LN" market you don't really see "next steps" so much as repetitions of the same basic formula with maybe a "twist" or "gimmick" that almost invariably gets dropped once the author runs out of steam. And sometimes those variations are enough to produce something that's a bit better than average. And this becomes all the more noticeable in anime specifically when it's paired with the fact that the anime market on the whole is heavily saturated with adaptations of these works, and having "anime original" series that actually trace their origins along "anime" lines doesn't happen nearly as much as it really should. To go with OP as an example: A "few" years back we had Back Arrow, written and directed by two vets from Gurren Laggan (among other Gainax/Trigger works) and Code Geass, respectively, that took a lot of inspiration from both of those, and it was pretty dumb fun. But it also didn't exactly do anything groundbreaking that would launch the next wave. Nearly everything feels that way. It's almost as if sometime in the mid-2000s there was a cultural inflection point where we tapped out on new ideas, and the rate has gotten worse and worse ever since (and I can only imagine the WN/LN side of things is going to get even worse with the addition of LLMs to the mix, to say nothing of having to deal wiPost too long. >This is just my suspicion, but I think what happened is that while it hasn't gotten nearly as bad in the west, a lot of "otaku" works have moved further and further away from their dojin origins and towards a "safer" approach that doesn't see the target audience as "other otaku, like me" but as an outside target, and I suspect that it's virtually impossible to create something good when you're not fully passionate about the thing you're making, and when the target number for audience reach isn't "I'd very very happy if I could sell 500 floppy disks at this con" but "a number that will make the publisher happy".

You're more or less correct, but the problem is also more profound than just the effect of money introducing businessmen into the equation (on which note, anons ought to read https://meaningness.com/geeks-mops-sociopaths for some all-too-familiar parallels if they haven't in the past). Rather, there's a very real problem of self-censorship (or at the very least, a chilling effect) when more eyes are on what you're making. This excerpt describing something Watanabe Akio said several years ago sums things up pretty well:

>For example, Watanabe Akio, a renowned character designer with deep ties to the bishōjo game industry, told me that, “In truth, I don’t want Americans to express interest. I don’t want these games to be known. That is why I’ve refused all interviews.” Despite being one such American, I was granted an interview because of my association with people in the industry, and because Watanabe had something that he wanted to say to me. “If these games come out into the open, we can’t moe (moerarenai),” he said, flustered but insistent. “We can’t moe. If otaku culture is too open, then the power of imagination/creation (sōzōryoku) will decline.” My presence threatened the ability of Watanabe and others like him to freely imagine and create bishōjo characters, which in turn compromised their ability to freely experience and share affective responses to them. I was caught off guard by the intensity of the words “We can’t moe” – moe as a verb, conjugated to mean not possible to moe – stated twice tPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

Nobody actually watches anime here or anywhere save for Japan. Anyone who says otherwise is lying for clout. Might as well drop the topic.

>>1244005 has a point. Anime should be banned worldwide except for Japan. Let them enjoy the medium they make. If fact, there needs to be a step further. Every country needs to be isolated, at least in media if not everything.

Hyakki Yakoushou

Ichijyouma Mankitsu Gurashi

Niwatori Fighter

Kanan-sama wa Akumade Choroi

Backlog season again. I expect to drop all but 2-3 of these anime within the first 3 episodes.

What I'm looking forward to the most is Reincarnation, I vaguely remember reading the manga a decade ago and enjoying it. I want to fuck the armchair loli. I have heard about the stuff with the swastika censorship and that's honestly making me worried. I wonder if it will go the way of Hoshi no Samidare, it certainly feels like these kinds of series tend to do so.

The cover for Kanan-sama also looks very nice. It may or may not be the sole reason I'm thinking of picking it up.

Xylo Forbartz became a "hero" as a form of punishment for killing a goddess. If he dies, he gets resurrected, but he loses a part of himself and his memories. His dameningen comrade, Dotta Luzulas, stole a coffin that contained a goddess, Teoritta, who wants praises and headpats from her knight. Due to the one-sided battle against a demon lord, Xylo was forced to make a pact with Teoritta in order to win the battle. However, Captain Kivia informed Teoritta that Xylo killed a goddess, but it turns out he was framed by someone?! Will Xylo keep his memories and findout who really betrayed him, and will Teoritta get her headpats?!

Maybe I've turned into a bad youtube commentator, but when I'm watching this I feel the urge point out every missed beat and bad writing decision.

>You didn't know how to de-escalate the conflict between the holy knight guy and the protagonist so you just had him give up offscreen?

>Am I really supposed to believe that the Holy Knights are deeply troubled by a criminal-hero having the goddess, even though all they do is complain about it then relent/get distracted because plot demands it?

>Repeating what you've already established multiple times just to make sure

This feels like a Netflix anime.

Caught up to the anime. Still enjoying the action so far, and we finally have our final squad mate appearing in the show. He seems pretty psychotic but still loves to fight for humanity. We also finally got the idea on why the coexisters wanted to ally themselves with demons, basically each noble would be an overseer where demons don't attack them and they'll get to rule forever. Pretty generic plot I guess, we'll just have to one final confrontation with Kvia's uncle as to why he keeps doing all this.

Xylo is an actual yuusha now…Sasuga. Pretty good action for the episode as usual, but it's a shame we only have one episode left, this feels like it deserves 2 cours. I wanted to see more Rhyno shenanigans, and the Spriggan feels like it's a setup for the next season.

I don't know what they're doing with the anime but steel ball run is technically not even JoJo. It started as a new series but because Araki is the JoJo guy it became a JoJo with stands halfway through.

As of now 1 through lesbian is a complete series and steel ball run on happens in a parallel universe.

After watching him stand on one finger for months at a time out of boredom, I'd believe it.

Seems like we'll end the season with the party reuniting with Denken at the golden city given the two hints in this episode to it.

I enjoyed that Stark knows how to play katamari damacy with dragons, not really sure how it works, but I enjoyed it all the same. I'm still a teensy bit confused how getting bit on the head by a dragon doesn't cause more problems for him, I mean, Eisen had a helmet, but Stark just has his hair?

Happy new years, everyone!

Last year's thread idea was fantastic, it pushed me into watching shows I didn't even know about and was surprised by how good and enjoyable they are. Let's keep up the good work! Right now I have a suggestion for watching either of these two OVA series: Bubblegum Crisis or Mobile Police Patlabor (original OVA series). Both of them have 8 episodes but they're around 40-50 minutes, so we could watch two episodes per week. If you guys feel it's too low, we could also add Cyber City Oedo with either of them, it has three episodes, but they're around an hour long. We could also keep suggesting and allow the dice to choose a show for us.

>focal character is unlikeable and annoying

is some minor nitpick and not a crucial flaw with a series that's meant to be fun to watch. I said she was the title character to emphasize how important she is in the show, not because the name of the show is the most important thing about it.

Dramatic changes are afoot! This week most of the scenes are too misty to see, pyjama loli gets new pyjamas and the foot fansa returns. In other news, Flum hallucinates her way through the first half as though trying to escape the dismal reality of this show. It turns out that rumors of Dein's death were overstated and rumors of Sara's peril cliffhanger were forgotten. Instead we got a load of suggestions about what might have happened: Sara has been excommunicated for demon worship. That so unfair, she only had one scene with sexy demon oneesan and hardly had any time to bond with her. Furthermore, sexy demon oneesan is missing from Maou-loli's mansion and is rumored to be doing things with humans. This can only mean that the two of them have run away to start their own onee-loli doujin circle. See you at Comiket.

Back at the harem house, I'm-pretty-sure-it's-Aqua casually reveals that Pyjama loli has no heartbeat. That was very cruel after pyjama loli did her emotional backstory scene. Then the show decides to follow Dein's lead by killing off more major characters in the hope of ending early. Red Honcho has mysteriously disappeared after she got a better offer from an isekai. You-can't-fool-us-Aqua heard of another Konosuba movie and took the first shinkansen back to Kadokawa. Meanwhile Milkit joins in the fansa by getting soaked until she too vanishes after a sudden Cease & Desist notice from Re:Zero. With no cast members left to talk to Flum has no choice but to rehearse saying Milkit's name and run around like an idiot. Then she remembers everyone's favorite pyjama loli and goes back home for a dramatic reveal. Yes, pyjama loli is another one of those spiral faced church monsters like in ep3. What's more she's the one behind the metama manifestations! Oh the irony etc. The blind girl has eyes everywhere.

It felt like we flicked through multiple chapters of the manga to get to Ink's bakemono reveal. I'll give the director some credit; he uses arty shit as a way to hide the exhausted budget. All that murk, mist and the reused cloudy background saved anybody from having to draw anything properly.

In a truly terrible episode of mist and murk, pyjama loli is suddenly cured of her eye-popping disease by the power of friendship but Flum immediately ruins everything by telling her that she's an monster, to which pyjama loli flees only to get caught by Dein. He's after stealing the best character without whom the show will surely have to end. Then Flum gets surrounded by a cloud of mist and a mob of zombie mob characters, all of whom want her dead so they can leave early. Just when it looked tedious, some guy from the Mage's party shows up and the two wield their huge cliché swords to victory. But dramatic twist! There are plenty more pyjama lolis where pyjama loli came from. The party guy is left battling a blue one but not before he implies that Sara is still alive which, unfortunately for her, means she's still under contract to this show.

With the highlight of the episode already over, Dein draws Flum to a badly drawn mansion for a long exposition battle. Things are looking so shounen that Flum cuts her own leg off in a desperate attempt to get in some foot fansa. However, her boot grows back after an outsource-animation powerup. She's ready to finally kill Dein but pauses for some womanly emotional drama before the coup de grace. Thus Dein fulfills his dream of being written out. Good for him.

It sucked. Next week Flum has to find all our favorite characters in a basement dungeon. I can guarantee that anything exploitative or titilatory will be implied or invisible.

I mean the whole romance bs is boring and cringe anyway in this show, but if they're sticking with showing off these females I expect them to look somewhat enticing not pushing feminist anti-aesthetics on me.

An unlikely pairing, or is it?

Kanata and Beckenbauer working together, activating the eurobeat, and slowly overtaking towards the top spot so they can have a proper battle of the stick shifts.

And Nozomi joined in on the fun as well, nice to see her again.

Poor Kyoko, spending summer break shitting her brains out, but at least she got thinner.

It was fortunate for us viewers that Kanata went down a couple of places, because now he can do sweet overtakes all race long.

I was a bit concerned when we got a skipped ED, and this being the twelfth episode, that this would be the end of the season.

Thankfully, there is still more episodes to go, with no episodes count in sight.
