AI code generation has moved from novelty to daily workflow in under three years. Tools that once offered simple autocomplete now generate full modules, draft integration tests, and refactor legacy functions in seconds. By using large language models to translate natural language prompts into executable code, reducing manual effort in routine tasks. Today, many software engineering teams are either experimenting with AI coding assistants, using them to augment their capabilities, and even fully embracing them, across both greenfield builds and mature systems. The headlines focus on speed and cost reduction, but the engineering conversation is more nuanced.

The reality is straightforward. AI code generation is a force multiplier in the hands of experienced engineers, but it is not a replacement for architectural judgment, domain expertise, or production accountability. Today we’re going to look at how  AI code generation truly adds value, where it still falls short, and how technology leaders should think about adoption. As of March 2026 of course. We’re pretty sure this will need to be rewritten in a few weeks.

The State of AI Code Generation Today

AI code generation in 2026 is significantly more capable than its 2023 predecessors. Modern tools can generate multi file components, scaffold APIs, create database schemas, and draft unit tests with minimal prompting. Some platforms now promote agent-like workflows that attempt multi step implementation plans. Enterprise adoption is rising as well. Large vendors have publicly acknowledged that a meaningful percentage of internal code is AI assisted, paired with expanded quality oversight roles to manage risk.

Capability, however, does not equal autonomy. AI code generation performs well with boilerplate code, CRUD operations, test scaffolding, documentation drafts, and straightforward data transformations. It struggles with complex domain modeling, cross system integration nuance, performance optimization under load, and regulatory constraints. The gap between code that runs and code that survives production remains wide. So while AI code generation is mature enough to influence productivity metrics, it’s not mature enough to eliminate engineering oversight.

How Expert Engineers Use Code Gen

There is a visible difference between novice and professional use of AI code generation. Experienced engineers treat it as a first draft, not as final implementation. They generate sections, modules, or helper functions, then refactor, restructure, and validate manually before merging anything into production. Often they use AI to do all of this. 

In practice, experienced teams use AI tools to draft repetitive components, generate initial data models, create test skeletons, suggest refactors, and translate logic between languages. After generation, they review for correctness, validate edge cases, harden security boundaries, simplify abstractions, and make sure the  implementation fits with the team’s architectural standards. This workflow mirrors how seasoned developers  guide junior developers: it accelerates output but does not replace judgment.

Last year, we discussed the productivity versus risk tradeoff in AI assisted coding, emphasizing that velocity without governance introduces downstream cost. The best engineers do not rely on instinct alone or outsource thinking to the model. They use AI code generation as an assistant that handles repetition while they focus on design intent and system integrity. 

Productivity in Practice: Why Pros Can Triple Output

In the hands of capable engineers, AI code generation can meaningfully increase throughput. Teams report faster implementation of routine features, reduced time spent on boilerplate, and quicker turnaround on refactors. Productivity gains typically stem from rapid scaffolding of new services, automatic unit test drafts, structured documentation, and targeted refactoring suggestions for legacy code. In some cases AI systems can generate entire views, or functions that fit into the “good enough” category, saving time and money. 

When engineers understand both the problem domain and the generated output, review cycles shorten and context switching declines. For certain classes of work, especially low complexity and boilerplate heavy tasks, output can approach three times  the previous baseline. That level of improvement is real, but it is conditional.

High complexity initiatives with heavy compliance, performance, or integration constraints show smaller improvements because verification time offsets generation speed. Teams that measure only velocity risk drawing misleading conclusions. True performance improvement must account for defect rates, security incidents, rework volume, and long term maintainability. AI code generation increases leverage, but it does not remove accountability. Used well, it feels like adding a junior developer who never gets tired but occasionally invents APIs that do not exist. Organizational investment in tools must be matched with investment in senior oversight.

The Hallucination Problem Still Matters

Large language models continue to hallucinate. In software terms, hallucination means generating plausible looking code that contains incorrect logic, insecure patterns, or fabricated dependencies. Security experts have warned that deeper integration of AI coding assistants expands the attack surface if validation controls do not evolve in parallel. 

Common hallucination risks include non-existent library functions, incorrect authentication flows, subtle data validation gaps, terrifying security issues, and inefficient queries that fail under scale. For regulated industries, this is not a minor inconvenience. It is a compliance exposure. In healthcare, finance, and government adjacent systems, incorrect assumptions embedded in generated code can violate audit standards. AI code generation tools do not understand your SOC 2 controls or HIPAA obligations unless explicitly guided and thoroughly reviewed.

Human review remains mandatory because the model does not carry fiduciary responsibility, your engineering leadership does. As models improve, hallucinations may decrease in frequency, but the cost of a single unchecked error in production systems keeps oversight firmly in human hands.

When to Use AI Code Generation

Effective adoption requires selectivity rather than blanket enthusiasm. Strong use cases include rapid prototyping, internal tools, boilerplate heavy features, automated test drafts, and migration scripts that are carefully reviewed. In these contexts, AI code generation accelerates delivery without dramatically increasing systemic risk.

Higher risk scenarios demand tighter control. Core business logic, payment systems, identity and access management, performance critical services, and complex distributed architectures require experienced oversight at every step. We advise clients to treat AI adoption as a capability upgrade embedded within disciplined engineering systems. A simple executive filter clarifies decisions: evaluate business risk if the component fails, regulatory exposure, expected lifespan of the code, and whether senior engineers are reviewing every change.

If risk and longevity are high, AI code generation should support rather than lead. Organizations that apply AI indiscriminately often face hidden rework that erodes early gains. Disciplined usage protects long term return on investment.

The Future Beyond 2026

AI code generation will continue improving as models expand context windows and strengthen reasoning capabilities. Agent driven development workflows will likely grow more capable, especially for standardized architectures and internal tooling. At the same time, democratized coding access expands the pool of builders, increasing opportunity and risk simultaneously.

The companies that win will not be those that generate the most code. They will be those that integrate AI code generation into disciplined engineering systems. Expertise remains the differentiator because tools evolve faster than accountability structures. Organizations that treat AI as an amplifier of engineering judgment will outperform those that treat it as a substitute for it.

Generative AI is no longer just a research buzzword, it’s core infrastructure for apps that produce text, images, video, design, code, or other creative outputs. While many organizations embrace these capabilities, one of the messiest strategic questions remains: who actually owns the content that your app generates? The answer matters for IP risk, product positioning, contractual terms, compliance, training data strategy, and platform liability.

In 2026, current IP law in the United States and many other jurisdictions still treats copyright as something only humans can hold, which leaves purely machine-generated content in a legal grey area absent meaningful human input. This uncertainty means product teams must be proactive rather than passive when integrating generative AI into their core value streams.

Why Generative AI Challenges Traditional Intellectual Property

Human Authorship is the Foundation of Copyright

Under U.S. copyright law, only humans can be authors and thus own a copyright. Courts and the U.S. Copyright Office have repeatedly confirmed that works produced wholly by algorithms without sufficient human creative control are not eligible for copyright protection. This forces a fundamental rethinking of how rights attach to machine-generated output.

Put another way:

    • If an AI system autonomously produces content with little human intervention, that content is likely ineligible for copyright protection.
    • If a human exercises sufficient creative control (by making decisions about structure, expression, or content selection) those human-directed elements may be protectable. This distinction is a practical building block for IP strategy.

Global Law Trends Mirror the U.S. Position

Not just in the U.S., other jurisdictions grapple with the tension between AI creation and IP ownership. For instance, under French law, IP rights may depend on the level of human involvement and originality, challenging teams to carefully document creative contributions when integrating GenAI output.

Contractual Ownership: The First Line of Defense

Since statutory copyright protections are ambiguous or unavailable for raw AI outputs, contracts become your most powerful tool for assigning and clarifying rights.

Terms of Service and End-User Agreements

Apps using generative AI should explicitly define:

    • who owns the raw output
    • whether the platform retains a license to use, distribute, or modify it
    • any rights the platform has to train or improve models using user inputs or outputs

Legacy legal frameworks are not reliable on their own, you have to contract around them. Many leading AI platforms and SaaS providers already embed specifics in their terms so that users and developers have clarity about rights and licenses.

Licensing Versus Assignment

Your agreements should clearly distinguish whether:

    • you are assigning ownership of output to another party (e.g., the end user), or
    • you are granting a license for defined uses of the output.

Assignment gives the other party broader rights, while a license lets you retain core rights for reuse or licensing to third parties, an important distinction for commercial platforms. Keep in mind that oftentimes the end license is a mix of both. Open source software for example cannot be owned by you, but the custom code, the processes, and the final product can be.

Product Roles and Ownership Scenarios

Different stakeholders may have valid claims, depending on how your app uses GenAI.

End Users / Prompt Submitters

If your app treats the person entering the prompts as the creative driver, you might assign ownership rights to them in your terms. However, this doesn’t automatically entitle them to copyright under current law unless their input rises to the level of substantial creative contribution.

Developers / Platform Providers

In some commercial contexts, especially when the AI outputs play a role in your core SaaS offering, you might retain ownership or wide-ranging licenses to reuse generative content for training, analysis, and improvement. This should be clearly documented to avoid disputes.

No Owner / Public Domain Default

In jurisdictions or for content types where no clear human ownership exists, the output may effectively sit in the public domain. This rarely aligns with business interests, which is why product and legal teams often use contracts to create ownership or license rights where statute does not.

Practical Contract Playbook for Product Teams

When drafting or updating contracts for apps with generative AI, product and legal teams should:

Use Explicit IP Assignment or Licensing Clauses

Make it clear who gets what rights in AI outputs, including downstream uses and derivative works.

Address Derivative Inputs

Ensure that users warrant they have rights in any input they provide (e.g. uploaded images or text), and that using these inputs to generate output doesn’t create liability or conflicting claims.

Retain Rights for Model Training

If your business model includes improving AI capabilities through data, include licenses to use user inputs and generated outputs for training and quality improvements.

Document Human Contribution

If part of your strategy involves claiming human authorship (for copyright protection), clearly log the decision points and human edits that distinguish your output.

Managing Patent and Trademark Dimensions

Generative AI can also produce designs, algorithms, or inventions. Patent law similarly requires a human inventor, and courts are hesitant to grant patents for inventions conceived entirely by machines. Trademark rights, on the other hand, apply when outputs function as source identifiers and meet traditional standards, but using AI-generated logos without distinctiveness can invite disputes.

Risk Mitigation and Compliance

Track Regulatory Shifts

Legislation like the Generative AI Copyright Disclosure Act, requiring transparency about copyrighted works used in training, may introduce new compliance requirements for AI platforms in the near future.

Monitor Court Trends

Ongoing lawsuits, including cases against generative AI companies for training data issues, are shaping practical expectations around IP risk and may ultimately influence product strategy and contractual norms.

Conclusion

Generative AI doesn’t just change how products work, it changes how value, risk, and ownership are defined. With the law still catching up, there is no automatic or default answer to who owns AI-generated output. Instead, ownership is shaped by a combination of human involvement, product design choices, and—most critically—how those choices are documented in contracts. Teams that ignore this reality risk ambiguity, disputes, and downstream compliance headaches. Teams that address it early can turn uncertainty into a strategic advantage.

From AI coding assistants to minimalist API testers, 2025 delivered a crop of new (and not-so-new) tools that made a serious impact on our workflows.

These are the tools our team couldn’t stop talking about this year. Some are bleeding-edge, and some are old standbys. All of them have earned their place in our daily toolkit.

Wispr Flow

Wispr Flow allows users to dictate text and commands at speeds that often outpace traditional typing. The voice-to-text engine works across apps like Slack, Google Docs, and VS Code, automatically formatting the output into polished content. It even understands coding syntax and CLI commands, which makes it surprisingly useful for hands-free programming, note-taking, and documentation. Our team appreciated how it kept them in flow, especially when juggling multiple contexts or switching between meetings and heads-down development.

Claude Code

Claude Code is part of Anthropic’s suite of AI tools and offers an AI coding assistant that integrates naturally with the developer workflow. Rather than switching over to a separate interface, Claude Code lives right inside your terminal or editor. It interprets natural language commands within the context of your codebase, helping to generate, refactor, or debug code efficiently. To quote one of our team members:

“Claude Code is a beast when it comes to agentic development, with support for MCP, custom commands, skills, and sync across cloud and local Claude instances. The Opus and Sonnet 4.5 family of models is impressive in its thoughtfulness and code writing, and being the default in CC makes it a no-brainer. I’ve even installed it onto a Raspberry Pi to work on code there—Claude Code helped me set up my in-home intranet!”

v0 by Vercel

v0 by Vercel made waves with its ability to turn plain language into working React components. It combines the power of Vercel’s front-end infrastructure with AI-generated UI scaffolding, streamlining how developers move from concept to code. The tool was particularly helpful during client discovery and prototyping sessions, allowing our teams to iterate quickly without compromising code quality. v0’s integration into the broader Vercel ecosystem made it even more valuable for teams already committed to their platform.

Hurl

Hurl is a command-line tool that simplifies making and testing HTTP requests. It lets developers define API calls in plain text, add assertions, chain requests, and test endpoints directly from the terminal. Hurl combines clarity with flexibility, making it ideal for integration testing, API validation, and lightweight automation. It has the power of Postman or Insomnia in text, and we found it especially useful paired with AI to help make quick scripts.

regex101

regex101 may not be new, but it remains a beloved tool by our team. Our team loves how it breaks down regular expressions and explains how they work in a very visual way, making complex pattern-matching logic much easier to understand and debug. Whether we’re validating form input, parsing logs, or cleaning data, regex101 provides an intuitive way to test and refine patterns before pushing them into production. It’s a great example of a tool that just works, and continues to deliver year after year.

Memgraph

Memgraph is a real-time, in-memory graph database designed for speed and analytical power. Using the familiar Cypher query language, it excels at modeling and traversing complex relationships in data. We’ve found it especially valuable in projects that involve recommendation engines, fraud detection systems, or knowledge graphs where understanding how things are connected is more important than tabular data alone. Memgraph offers strong performance and developer-friendly tools, making it a compelling alternative when traditional relational databases fall short.

In our previous post, we covered what MCP might look like in a service-based organization. Now it’s time to get practical with a step-by-step checklist for putting it into action.

Alright, so MCP sounds great in theory. But how do you actually do this? Let’s walk through the steps, from easiest to most advanced. The good news: you can start today. Unlike most “transformative technology,” you don’t need to hire a dev team or wait six months for implementation. If you’re already using Claude.ai, you can start experimenting with MCP connections in under an hour.

Implementation Path 1: The No-Code Start (Perfect for Testing)

Step 1: Check What's Already Available

Go to your Claude.ai settings and look for “Integrations” or “Connections.” Anthropic is actively building official MCP connectors for popular tools. As of now, you might see options for Slack, Google Drive, GitHub, or Notion. 

    These are one-click connects, so all you have to do is authorize Claude to access your account, set permissions, and you’re live.

    Step 2: Start with Simple Use Cases

    Don’t try to automate your entire business on day one. Pick one annoying, repetitive task:

      • “Search our Google Drive for all client proposals from Q4”
      • “Find the Slack conversation where we discussed pricing with Acme Corp”
      • “Show me all issues labeled ‘bug’ in our GitHub repo”

    Get comfortable with how Claude uses these connections. Watch what it can and can’t do. Learn to phrase requests effectively.

    Step 3: Gradually Expand

    Once you’re comfortable, start chaining tools together:

      • “Find the proposal in Drive, then post it to the #sales Slack channel”
      • “Search our Notion docs for the onboarding checklist, then tell me what we’re missing”

    You’re building muscle memory for what’s possible.

    Time investment: 1-2 hours setup, then ongoing experimentation.
    Cost: Just your existing Claude subscription.
    Risk: Minimal. You control permissions and can revoke access anytime.

    Implementation Path 2: The DIY Developer Route

    If you want to connect tools that don’t have official MCP servers yet (like HubSpot, Asana, Salesforce), you’ll need to build or configure MCP servers yourself. This path is best for companies with technical resources, custom tool integration, and full control. 

    Step 1: Understand the Architecture

    An MCP server is essentially a small application that:

      1. Connects to your business tool’s API (like HubSpot’s API)
      2. Exposes standardized “tools” that Claude can call
      3. Handles authentication and data formatting

    Think of it as a translator that speaks “Claude language” on one side and “HubSpot language” on the other.

    Step 2: Check for Community Servers

    The MCP community is growing fast. Before building from scratch, search for existing servers:

      • Check the official MCP repository: github.com/modelcontextprotocol
      • Look for community-built servers on GitHub
      • Many are open source and ready to use

    For example, someone may have already built a HubSpot MCP server you can deploy.

    Step 3: Deploy Your First Custom Server

    Let’s say you want to connect to HubSpot. Here’s the simplified process:

    1. Get your HubSpot API credentials

      • Generate a private app in HubSpot settings
      • Copy your API key

    2. Set up the MCP server

      • Clone the MCP server template or existing HubSpot server
      • Configure it with your API credentials
      • Define which tools you want to expose (search deals, update contacts, etc.)

    3. Host it securely

      • Deploy to a cloud service (AWS, Google Cloud, or even your own servers)
      • Ensure it’s behind proper authentication
      • Set up HTTPS for secure communication

    4. Connect Claude to your server

      • In Claude’s settings, add your custom MCP server URL
      • Configure authentication tokens
      • Test the connection

    Time investment: 8-20 hours for first server (depending on technical comfort)
    Cost: Cloud hosting fees (typically $10-50/month)
    Skills needed: Basic familiarity with APIs, deployment, and command-line tools

    Step 4: Build Your Tool Library

    Once you have one server working, the pattern becomes repeatable. Add servers for:

      • Asana (project management)
      • Gmail (email integration)
      • Your internal database
      • Custom reporting tools

    Each server gives Claude new capabilities.

    Implementation Path 3: The Enterprise Approach

    This approach is best suited for larger organizations with compliance requirements and advanced security needs.

    Step 1: Conduct a Security & Compliance Review

    Before connecting business-critical tools:

      • Audit what data Claude will access
      • Review data retention policies
      • Ensure compliance with GDPR, SOC 2, or industry regulations
      • Set up proper access controls and permissions

    Step 2: Build Internal MCP Infrastructure

    Rather than connecting Claude directly to production systems:

    Most teams start managing data the same way: a few spreadsheets, a shared drive, a couple of people who “own” the numbers. It works for a while, then version conflicts, broken formulas, and slow reports start to creep in. At the same time, data volumes keep growing. Industry forecasts put annual global data creation well into the tens of zettabytes and climbing, with most of it generated in just the last few years.

    At that point, terms like database, data warehouse, data lake, and more recently “lakehouse” enter the conversation. They sound similar, yet they solve different problems and carry different costs. Treating them as interchangeable is like treating a notebook, a filing cabinet, and a distribution center as the same thing because they all store paper.

    In this post, we’ll explain the typical roles of spreadsheets, databases, warehouses, and lakes/lakehouses as your data grows, and how they fit together so you invest in the right structure at the right time.

    Spreadsheets: Familiar but Fragile

    Spreadsheets are excellent for early experiments and small workflows. They are flexible, fast to set up, and almost everyone knows how to use them. They are ideal when a single person or a very small team is exploring an idea, building a quick model, or testing a metric.

The idea looks attractive: collect everything now, keep it in raw form, and open the door to advanced analytics and machine learning later.

Common themes included unclear ownership, weak governance, poor documentation, and uncertainty about exactly what lives in the lake. Without structure and oversight, “data swamp” is an accurate description.

    A minimum level of governance is required once data moves beyond simple spreadsheets. At its simplest, this means defined ownership for each dataset, documented schemas, and basic quality checks such as type validation and duplicate detection. Warehouses and lakehouse systems rely on a catalog that records what each table contains, who maintains it, and how often it is updated. Without this lightweight structure, analytical environments degrade quickly regardless of underlying technology.

    Modern platforms respond to this by layering more structure on top of the lake. This is often called a lakehouse approach:

      • Raw data lands in object storage, usually in efficient columnar formats
      • A table layer adds schemas, transactions, and time travel on top of those files
      • A catalog tracks which tables exist, their owners, and how they should be used

    The result is closer to a warehouse in behavior, but keeps the flexibility and low cost of storing many data types in a single underlying system.

    Lakes and lakehouses tend to make sense when:

      • You have high data volumes in many formats (structured, semi-structured, and unstructured)
      • You need to retain detailed history cheaply for machine learning or data science
      • You are prepared to invest in governance, cataloging, and data quality checks

    Very large enterprises with mature data engineering teams were early adopters, often combining lakes, warehouses, and strong governance processes. Increasingly, mid-sized organizations are using cloud lakehouse platforms for similar reasons. For many teams, though, a clean operational database and a well-run warehouse will provide more practical value than a vast, loosely managed data store.

    We’ve recently been alerted to a recruitment scam that’s using Sourcetoad’s name, logo, and reputation to trick people into fake “remote job” opportunities.

    To be absolutely clear:

    👉 Sourcetoad only posts legitimate job openings on Indeed and LinkedIn.

    👉 We never contact candidates through WhatsApp, Telegram, or unsolicited direct messages.

    How We Found Out

    Over the past few weeks, several thoughtful people have reached out to us after being contacted by fake recruiters using our name.

      • A friendly person from Spain reached out to us to say that they had received a WhatsApp message from someone calling themselves “Kai” at +44 7756 218806 offering them a job at Sourcetoad. It felt scammy, so they reached out to us directly.
      • A helpful person from Poland emailed us after being invited to a WhatsApp group called “App Innovators Rising to New Horizons,” led by someone calling themselves “Joshua” at +44 7355 863431. They said that it didn’t seem like a real opportunity, so they wanted to confirm with us directly.
      • And just recently, another person submitted a detailed report through our website about a LinkedIn user under the name “Gabriel Barbu” who contacted them with a remote job offer. After connecting on WhatsApp, someone using the name “Henry Chan” at the number +44 7563 739019 directed them to a fraudulent domain: aso-sourcetoad.org.

    We’re incredibly grateful to these individuals for taking the time to verify and report what they suspected were scams. Their messages helped us connect the dots and act quickly.

    Digging Deeper

    We examined the fake site’s source code, domain registration, and related network activity.

    The WHOIS records show the domain was registered through Domain International Services Limited (wdomain.com) a registrar that hosts many scam-related domains.

    The HTML code we found on the site looked suspiciously familiar: it included mismatched branding from other companies (for example, “Airbnb” labels in hidden modal windows and a “Copyright © 2025 PHD Labs” footer).

    When we performed a reverse IP lookup, we discovered several nearly identical websites, only rebranded under different names, one impersonating Airbnb, another copying a UK marketing firm called Brew (who actually does great work helping pubs and restaurants with digital marketing, which sounds awesome!)

    All of this confirmed we were looking at a mass-deployed scam network, not a one-off impersonation.

    What the Scam Actually Is

    These scams follow a clear pattern we’ve now seen multiple times:

        1. The Hook: The scammer approaches someone on LinkedIn with a remote job offer, usually something vague but lucrative, like “app optimization” or “AI training.”
        2. The Setup: They move the conversation to WhatsApp and share a link to a fake “Sourcetoad portal” where the victim is asked to sign up.
        3. The Illusion: The fake site shows a “dashboard” with made-up earnings for small, simple tasks (clicking buttons, running tests, etc.).
        4. The Trap: After a few days, the scammers tell the victim they need to make a deposit in crypto (USDC) to “unlock higher-level tasks” or “verify their account.”
        5. The Loss: Once the money is sent, the scammers disappear or keep asking for more “fees.”

    In short: it’s a crypto and identity theft scam disguised as a tech job.

    How to Handle It (and Help Others)

    If your company is ever targeted in a similar way, here’s what we recommend:

    1. Collect the Evidence

    Gather screenshots, phone numbers, fake domains, and emails. Ask anyone who reports the scam to forward the full message headers or screenshots.

    2. Publish a Blog Post Like This

    Scammers rely on trust. When you publish a visible warning, victims who search your company name plus “job” or “WhatsApp” will see that you’re legitimate—and that the scam is fake.

    3. Contact the Registrar

    Use a direct, professional letter to the registrar (in this case, [email protected]) explaining that their customer is impersonating your company. Here’s a version of the letter we used:

    Subject: Urgent: Fraudulent domain impersonating Sourcetoad — aso-sourcetoad.org

    Hello Abuse Team,

    The domain aso-sourcetoad.org is being used in a recruitment scam impersonating our company. Victims are directed there through LinkedIn and WhatsApp and asked to “register” for fake jobs and send crypto payments.

    Please suspend or disable the domain.

    Thank you.

    4. Thank the People Who Warned You

    The people who report scams aren’t just helping you, they’re preventing others from being defrauded. A simple thank-you goes a long way.

    5. Reach Out to Other Victims

    If you find other companies being impersonated (like Brew in this case), let them know. Sharing intel helps everyone act faster next time.

    Tampa Bay loves a good ranking, and we couldn’t resist this one

    If you live and work in Tampa Bay, you already know that we love our lists. Fastest growing,  best places to work, top innovators, and, of course, the Tampa Bay Business Journal’s annual ranking of the largest software developers.

    When we saw the 2025 list, we did what any self-respecting engineering firm would do: opened a spreadsheet, crunched the numbers, and asked, “So, are we actually the biggest custom software development company in Tampa?” Turns out, depending on how you define “custom,” we might be. (And yes, we’re squinting a little, but it’s still fun math.)

    What the Tampa Bay Business Journal actually ranked

    The TBBJ list ranks the “largest software developers” in the region by number of local employees. But here’s the thing: every single company above Sourcetoad on that list is a product company.

    These companies build, market, and sell their own software products, such as subscription platforms, SaaS tools, and enterprise systems, which is a different business model entirely. None of the companies that rank above Sourcetoad are custom software developers. They’re great companies, but they don’t do what we do: build one-of-a-kind software for clients from scratch. So when you filter out the product companies, you’re left with a smaller pool, and Sourcetoad sits right at the top of it.

    So, what happens if you only count service companies?

    Let’s be honest: we probably looked for the column that would make us look best. But if you only count companies that build custom software for clients, the picture gets a lot clearer.
