The approved citizen initiative application in Alberta is for a constitutional referendum proposal regarding independence, as follows:

Subject matter: 

A referendum concerning Alberta’s independence is underway, with canvassers actively collecting signatures for the petition.

Proposed Question:

Do you agree that the Province of Alberta should cease to be part of Canada to become an independent state?

Proponent:

Mitch Sylvestre is advocating for independence through a petition aimed at organizing a referendum.

What Comes Next?

December 23–29, 2025: Public notice period on the Elections Alberta website regarding the upcoming referendum.

January 3, 2026: Petition for independence officially issued – signature collection can begin across Alberta with the help of canvassers! We currently have applications for hundreds of canvassers into Elections Alberta and are waiting for their approval and their badges to be distributed to begin signature collection.

The 120-day collection period for the independence petition runs until approximately May 2, 2026. During this time, canvassers must gather approximately 177,000 valid signatures, which is 10% of the eligible voters from the last provincial election in Alberta.
