Lübeck/Kiel, August 11, 2025 – Gabler Maschinenbau GmbH, part of the Possehl Group, both headquartered in Lübeck, has announced the acquisition of SubCtech GmbH, based in Kiel. This strategic move unites two leading companies in the field of maritime technology, aiming to leverage shared sales channels and technology to strengthen their market position.

SubCtech is an internationally recognized provider of high-tech systems for maritime applications, particularly in underwater energy supply and ocean monitoring. Gabler Maschinenbau has long been a maritime technology leader in submarine and special-purpose machinery. By combining SubCtech’s technological and market expertise with Gabler’s decades of experience and global market reach, both companies are opening new growth opportunities.

As part of the acquisition, SubCtech also becomes a member of Gabler Ocean (www.gabler-ocean.com) – a dedicated group of companies like Develogic GmbH and north.io GmbH that specialize in advanced ocean technology. Stefan Marx will continue to actively shape SubCtech’s success within the Gabler Group as managing director.

Strategic advantages at a glance

The integration of SubCtech gives the Gabler Group access to innovative solutions for the rapidly expanding market of underwater vehicle and offshore renewable and Oil+Gas battery systems, and also ocean monitoring systems. At the same time, SubCtech will benefit from Gabler’s Ocean Group robust sales infrastructure and maritime footprint. Joint development projects and the shared use of existing resources are expected to significantly boost the innovation and competitiveness of both companies.

“With the acquisition of SubCtech, we continue our clear approach in forming a powerful alliance in the maritime technology sector,” says David Schirm, Managing Director of Gabler Maschinenbau GmbH and Possehl PMB for corporate participation in SMEs. “Our customers can look forward to an expanded product portfolio and even more advanced technological solutions.”

Stefan Marx, founder and Managing Director of SubCtech GmbH, also sees the acquisition as a key milestone: “Joining the Possehl Group and Gabler Maschinenbau GmbH and becoming part of Gabler Group, allows us to bring our technologies to market faster and more broadly, especially through access to new markets and assure long stability for our customers worldwide.”

Strengthening northern Germany’s innovation ecosystem

Both companies will continue operations at their respective locations in Lübeck and Kiel. Together with Develogic GmbH in Hamburg and north.io GmbH in Kiel, the collaboration underscores Northern Germany’s role as a hub for maritime high technology and sustainable innovation.

Yesterday, our company had the unique opportunity to participate in the Ocean Race Europe festivities in Kiel by joining the action aboard the magnificent classic schooner, Amphitrite. This 138-year-old vessel is not only a striking example of maritime heritage, but is also considered the oldest actively sailing yacht of her size worldwide. Amphitrite’s legacy includes winning the “Sonderpreis für englische Kreuzeryachten” during Kiel Week as early as 1897, where she stood out as one of the fastest yachts of her class.

Nowadays, climbing aboard the Amphitrite gives young people the chance to experience traditional seamanship, take responsibility, explore their own boundaries—and, importantly, to leave their smartphones in the bunk and be present in the moment.

Ocean Race Europe 2025: Essential Facts

Second Edition: The Ocean Race Europe is being held for the second time, with the 2025 race starting on August 10th in Kiel and drawing crowds of over 100,000 spectators along the waterfront.

Regatta Details: Seven IMOCAs (high-performance monohulls) are competing over a 4,500-nautical-mile course, racing from Kiel to Portsmouth, then on to Spain, France, Italy, and finishing in Boka Bay, Montenegro in mid-September.

Crew and Equipment: Each IMOCA team must include both genders and at least two nationalities, keeping with the regatta’s inclusive, international spirit.

Sustainability: Teams are required to generate at least 30% of onboard energy via renewables—solar, wind, or water power.

Our Technology on the Ocean Race IMOCAs

We are proud to announce that four out of the seven IMOCA yachts competing in The Ocean Race Europe 2025 are sailing with our cutting-edge OceanPack RACE systems, with some also equipped with our Microplastic Sampler. This crucial technology allows the teams to continuously collect high-quality oceanographic and microplastic data while racing—making every nautical mile count for climate and marine science.

“By equipping nearly 60% of the racing fleet with our OceanPack RACE and Microplastic Sampler, we are powering ocean science where it matters most: at the leading edge of offshore competition.”

Through these partnerships, we help advance both elite racing and the global understanding of our oceans—a testament to our commitment to technology with impact.

Under the motto “Not just sitting, but also sweating,” the SubCWanderers laced up their running shoes and hit the track at this year’s AOK Business Run in Kiel.

Once the starting signal sounded, the crowd began to move – and after about five minutes, we crossed the starting line ourselves. From that point on, it was all about giving our best.

A special shout-out goes to our in-house photographer Gunnar, who was ready along the route with his camera and a smile. His presence gave us a much-needed motivation boost mid-race!

We’re already looking forward to the next challenge, and hopefully, with a full squad back on the track.

SubCtech Drives Sustainable Energy Solutions Forward: Building the Next 1 MWh Subsea Battery System

SubCtech continues its success story in sustainable offshore energy. The company is currently manufacturing its next major project: a 1 MWh Battery Storage Skid designed for subsea deployment. This powerful energy storage solution (scalable up to 6 MWh) will play a crucial role in powering underwater applications, contributing to a greener energy future.

Progress through Partnership: Production is underway in Norway

A significant milestone in this project began with the manufacturing of 12 stainless steel tubes by our trusted supplier in Norway. These tubes form the robust casing for the battery system, engineered to withstand the extreme conditions of the deep sea. Photos from the production site showcase the precision and quality our partners provide to ensure the high standards of reliability and safety necessary for subsea applications.

Sustainability Underwater: Energy Efficiency and Environmental Responsibility

The 1 MWh battery system is not only powerful but also a significant step toward sustainable offshore energy. By efficiently storing and utilising electricity underwater, this system helps to significantly reduce CO₂ emissions. It is ideal for applications in offshore wind farms, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and other energy-intense subsea operations.

Looking ahead: Growth and Innovation

SubCtech remains committed to its vision of revolutionising the energy sector with innovative underwater solutions. By developing the new 1 MWh battery system, SubCtech once again sets the benchmark in underwater energy storage. This project underscores the company’s commitment to contributing positively to the future of environmentally through technological innovation and sustainable solutions.

Stay tuned for more updates and follow us on Social Media to track the progress of this and other exciting projects!
