The Corsair Xeneon Flex 45WQHD240 suffers from all-too-apparent brightness limitations, while the resolution and pixel density are a very hard sell at this price point. Likewise, the flexible panel tech isn’t exactly a game changer. The pixel response is fantastic and with the right HDR content the Xeneon Flex does have obvious advantages over LCD displays. But much more often it lacks anything like the wow factor the premium price and OLED panel tech would have you hoping for.

                  Commonwealth is working on a compact, relatively inexpensive reactor that would cost hundreds of millions of dollars, instead of the billions it took to construct NIF. Its approach relies on superconducting materials to achieve super strong magnetic fields that can keep plasma in place for fusion reactions (the temperatures are far too high to use conventional materials to keep the fuel in place). 

                  Some experts in fusion say practical reactors that can be used to generate significant amounts of power are still a few decades away. But Commonwealth and other startups have more ambitious timelines in mind, planning to build demonstrations within a few years and power plants within about a decade. Commonwealth announced last year that it raised $1.8 billion in venture capital funding to make it happen. 

                  The NIF news is probably going to be a big boon for the fusion field generally, driving more interest and investment. But it’s not a guarantee that inertial confinement, or any other approach to fusion, will succeed commercially. Achieving net gain in one kind of reactor doesn’t necessarily translate to others, so tokamaks and other reactors will need to have their own breakthrough moment on the pathway towards making fusion power happen.

                  As ChatGPT has so aptly demonstrated, AI is now truly entering the mainstream consciousness. That’s why we weren’t very surprised when a slew of investors told us they rarely see a biotech startup that doesn’t incorporate AI in some form or other these days.

                  “Most of the companies we have seen have an AI component to support the discovery or development processes,” Francisco Dopazo, a general partner at Humboldt Fund told TechCrunch recently.

                  But despite becoming quite the buzzword, AI’s apparent ubiquity in biotech isn’t actually driving deal flow or higher valuations. So to get a better idea of how AI is affecting biotech in 2022, we asked six investors to tell us what they look for in a biotech startup today.

                  For Franck Lescure, a partner at Elaia Partners, in biotech, having an AI component isn’t an automatic deal closer. “We do not favor biotech startups with extant AI over those without: Bio-revolution is not only digital. Digital is one tool; the other major tool is the living organism,” he said.

                  VCs are also increasingly looking for what biotech startups can do with AI beyond just R&D and are wary of companies that use the technology as a marketing tool.

                  “When evaluating ‘AI for drug discovery companies,’ I view AI as a tool,” Shaq Vayda, principal at Lux Capital, told TechCrunch. “Much like how any modern biotech company is using the latest and greatest tools, AI is becoming more and more common as part of biotech workflows. The bigger question for investors is getting a better understanding of what exactly AI is attempting to model and predict.”

                  Also, just because a startup uses AI doesn’t mean it can escape being compared to struggling public biotech comparables. “The public markets are the final arbiters of value, and the valuations coming back to earth this year have begun to flow through to startup funding,” said Sarah Guo, founder of Conviction. “I expect we’ll continue to see some digestion through the next year or two, as many midstage companies have built major war chests and don’t yet need to come back to market.”

                  The NASDAQ Biotechnology Index peaked in 2021. Have declines in the public-market valuations of biotech companies impacted your investments in the sector?

                  Public market biotechs are dramatically down as interest rates rise and the focus on near-term development outweighs the promise of longer-term results and approvals. As a result, a significant proportion of biotech companies are trading below cash.

                  Given the substantial and positive flow of data in the space, we view market sentiment as overly negative. These valuations have affected private-market rounds’ size, pricing and structure. Private biotechs are considering the reprioritization of their assets — deciding whether to partner second or third assets with strategics and evaluating structure in tranched financings to reach their fundraising targets.

                  Of the biotech startups you’ve seen lately, how many had an AI component? Do you favor biotech startups with extant AI capabilities over those without?

                  AI has become a very important part of next-generation drug discovery in both the small molecule and biologics spaces. Boston Consulting Group (BCG) partner Chris Meier reported in the March 22 Issue of Nature Reviews Drug Discovery that 24 “AI native” drug discovery companies have a combined 160 disclosed discovery programs. We are many more above this.

                  Recently our own portfolio companies Atomwise and InSilico each inked $1.2 billion deals with Sanofi. Still, the majority of biotechs raising capital are not “AI-enabled.” This isn’t a necessary condition for us, but in many spaces, computational approaches can rapidly improve drug discovery success and speed, at a potentially lower cost.

                  We also see AI being used in the biologics space, although the technology is used there far earlier. AI-enablement doesn’t increase our interest unless the technology is robust, mature and adds value to the platform in a meaningful way.

                  IBM sold Watson Health to private equity in 2022 after investing billions into it. What can biotech startups and investors learn from what could be seen as a cautionary tale?

                  Biotech companies will ultimately be measured largely by their therapeutic pipelines and portfolios rather than by their tech platform.

                  AI for AI’s sake doesn’t hold water anymore. Results, whether in the form of novel therapeutic programs, diagnostic capabilities or other clinically meaningful outcomes, are necessary.

                  We know quite a few startups are working on AI-assisted drug or protein discovery. Where else can AI play a role in health tech?

                  AI is a capability, or more accurately described as a set of computational capabilities that can be applied to a set of problems where conventional techniques have demonstrable limitations. AI technology can play a role in biologics, small molecules and even cell therapy.

                  We have witnessed its application in every aspect of a biopharmaceutical’s business — from discovery, clinical development and applications in real-world evidence creation to go-to-market motions and post-market patient engagement.

                  AI is not a monolith; as a set of capabilities, the power of learning systems affords benefits to many previously difficult or intractable problems.

                  How commercially viable will personalized medicine be in the next five years?

                  Personalized medicine is already here. See the success in oncology over the last decade, from targeted therapies that are based upon tumor genomics to cell therapies that are N-of-one therapies, where a patient’s own immune cells are engineered to attack the cancer.

                  Personalized medicine as a viable business has already borne out. The question of how far we can go with personalized therapy is the one being answered in the market today.

                  Clearly, many therapies do not need hyperpersonalization, but as we learn more about cancer, metabolic disease and neurological disorders, we are enabled with advancements in biologic and computational science to customize or configure therapies for each patient.

                  Y Combinator welcomed a significant number of health tech startups in its recent batches. Has YC’s presence had any impact on early-stage valuations? 

                  Y Combinator has been a net positive force in driving innovative experimentation at the early stages of company development. Their health tech cohorts are solid, and their apprentice model works well there.

                  They are still perfecting their approach to projects that focus on biologic science, but I remain optimistic. They have had far less of an effect on valuations for us than the larger momentum firms that recently moved into healthcare over the last few years.

                  How has due diligence in this space changed in 2022?

                  We have welcomed the investment environment of 2022 as both companies and venture investors can diligence each other at a more natural pace. Venture capitalists and founders need time in the process of diligence to understand each other, and the fervent environment of 2021 diminished and, in some ways, attempted to commoditize both.

                  As venture capitalists, we focus on selecting teams and projects that have the highest merit as transformative companies. This exercise takes significant effort and a clear understanding of a number of areas that cannot be accomplished in a day.

                  Diligence is more efficient now than in 2019, but we have returned to a far healthier pace for both founders and VCs.

                  Is Big Pharma interacting more with biotech startups this year than in prior years? When approaching yet-private companies in the space, do the majors favor M&A or corporate venture activity?

                  We are starting to see more deal-related activity pick up, but with a heavy tilt toward business development deals and some corporate venture activity. Biotech has proven its worth as the engine of innovation for the biopharmaceutical industry, and larger strategics have clear programs for engaging with smaller venture-backed entities.

                  One would imagine given the valuations we are seeing in the venture-backed ecosystem that more M&A would occur given the quality of many of these assets relative to price, but we are at the early stages of that curve.

                  We heard that U.S. sanctions on China could extend to biotech. What impact could this have on AI-enabled biotech startups elsewhere?

                  Clearly, CFIUS continues to have important implications on venture financing across all sectors. Biotech is no different, and there may be more sensitivity moving forward, especially as it relates to advanced technologies, particularly in tech and biology.

                  This may have a modest cooling effect on the pricing of some assets, but I doubt it will affect whether quality companies and teams are funded properly.

                  Should AI-enabled biotech startups take non-dilutive capital from government entities? Why or why not?

                  This is a complex question. If the entity is a U.S. government affiliate, the answer is maybe. For other governments, in particular those outside the U.S. or Europe, it is a more challenging question.

                  Government funding nearly always has conditions of some kind that have to be clearly balanced with the future path of the company. If the funding is from a military source, the implications of dual-use technologies must be considered, and so must be the strategic drift that such funding might encourage.

                  The NASDAQ Biotechnology Index peaked in 2021. Have declines in public-market valuations of biotech companies impacted startup investment in the sector?

                  Definitely. Going public is a preferred exit strategy for many, and those valuations have just been cut by more than 80%, driving down demand for all but the highest-quality startups. As evidenced by the XBI itself, such cycles are part of the sector.

                  Of the biotech startups you’ve seen lately, how many had an AI component? Do you favor biotech startups with extant AI capabilities over those without?

                  The ubiquity of AI in pitches that I see is striking. It’s hard for a biotech company to convince me they are doing more than just using AI as a component of their R&D (which they probably ought to be!).

                  IBM sold Watson Health to private equity in 2022 after investing billions into it. What can biotech startups and investors learn from what could be seen as a cautionary tale?

                  We work closely with many innovative ecosystems in health and life sciences. None of the investments we are most excited about are from YC (at this time).

                  How has due diligence in this space changed in 2022?

                  As I mentioned in my TechCrunch article: cash runway, non-dilutive capital and market size have reemerged as the key metrics in determining whether or not to invest alongside the science.

                  If it aligns with the commercial trajectory of the company, then yes. If the grant or contract doesn’t align with what the company aims to accomplish, they should not take the funding (unless in life support mode!).

                  Bottom line: Intel’s N95 is an upcoming budget friendly processor that is considered to be the successor to Atom processors. The chip punches above its weight class in Geekbench 5 and performs similarly to mid-range mobile CPUs from just a few years ago. As a result, it is significantly faster compared to any of Intel’s Atom-based CPU architectures, thanks to the use of the Alder Lake-N architecture featuring the same Gracemont efficiency cores found in the Core i9-12900K.

                  Twitter user @BenchLeaks, shared a new Geekbench 5 listing featuring an upcoming Intel processor called the N95. We believe this chip will be targeting entry-level devices such Chromebooks, lower-cost laptops and tablets, using the Alder Lake-N CPU architecture featuring Gracemont CPU cores. The N95’s Geekbench performance reflects this, with benchmark scores equivalent to Intel’s 6th generation Skylake mobile CPUs from several years ago.

                  Alder Lake-N is a future Intel CPU architecture designed specifically for budget-friendly systems. The architecture takes advantage of the same Gracemont efficiency cores found in Intel’s hybrid CPU architecture — such as Alder Lake and Raptor Lake — but forgoes the hybrid portion altogether. The architecture relies entirely on Gracemont cores to do all the heavy lifting.

                  Making a CPU entirely out of efficiency cores (or E-cores) might seem like a bad idea, but Intel’s Gracemont are not as slow as you might think. These cores retain the same performance as Intel’s Skylake CPUs from several years ago, and are both smaller and substantially more efficient. These chips are much faster than any of Intel’s previous low-power designs which were incorporated into its Atom CPUs.

                  We don’t know the full lineup of Alder Lake-N products, but the core architecture enables up to two quad core clusters to be used on a single SoC, allowing two, four, six and eight core configurations to be created. The N95 in particular is a quad core part which we assume consists of a single Gracemont core cluster, rather than two clusters with two cores disabled. According to Geekbench 5 the chip has a base frequency of 1.7GHz and a max turbo clock of 2.8GHz with a cache configuration featuring 2MB of L2 cache and 6MB of L3 cache.

                  Another fact worth mentioning, is the N95 and all future budget CPUs will no longer be branded Pentium or Celeron. Intel has reportedly shelved the two names for the foreseeable future, and is replacing them with a simplistic “Intel Processor” nomenclature.

                  In Geekbench 5, the N95 scores 781 points in the single-core benchmark and 1978 points in the multi-core test. This is about as quick as Intel’s i5-6300HQ quad core Skylake mobile processor from 2015, and matches most of Intel’s more recent dual-core mobile chips in the same benchmark. On the AMD side, the N95 gets close to the desktop Ryzen 3 2200G.

                  Of course, these benchmark shouldn’t be taken as an absolute as Geekbench 5 is just one synthetic benchmark out of many that can measure CPU performance and it’s not renowned for reflecting real-world performance in general. But, if the N95 can roughly match these older processors in its pre-production state, it will likely become a solid entry-level mobile CPU that might become even better if full production variants arrive with higher clock speeds.

                  Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR) drives write data on a hard disk in tracks that do not overlap. Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) allows tracks to overlap, which results in higher data densities, but slower read and write times compared to CMR drives.

                  Since 2015, hard disk manufacturers have produced a new type of drive: SMR, which stores more data per disk but comes with some drawbacks compared to the conventional storage method, called CMR. Each type has pros and cons—let’s take a look.

                  Two Different Ways of Storing Data on a Disk

                  Hard drives store data in “tracks,” which are circular paths typically oriented in concentric rings on the top and bottom surfaces of a hard disk platter. Each hard disk unit can contain multiple platters, which allows the drive to store more data.

                  Historically, manufacturers have increased storage capacity in hard disk models by either increasing the number of platters in the drive or increasing the write density on the disk. In the past, the circular tracks written to the disk never overlapped. The data storage industry calls this “Perpendicular Magnetic Recording” (PMR) or “Conventional Magnetic Recording” (CMR).

                  Recently, a new technique for increasing write density called “Shingled Magnetic Recording” (or SMR) has emerged. SMR drives write data using a special method that partially overwrites previously written tracks on a hard disk platter. The manufacturers use the analogy of roof shingles that partially overlap each other to explain this technique, which is where the “shingled” part of the name comes from.

                  While SMR drives increase capacity for lower cost (because the drives can use fewer platters than a CMR drive at the same capacity), the way they work also comes with a speed penalty. When you copy data to an SMR drive, the drive temporarily stores the data in a special cache area and uses idle time later to organize it into shingled regions on the platter. Long, sustained writes suffer speed penalties because if the cache fills up, each time an SMR drive overwrites part of a previous track, it must read and re-write the “partially covered” underlying data as well. So SMR drives can perform dramatically slower than CMR drives.

                  SMR’s slow performance led to a controversy in 2020 and 2021 when people realized that manufacturers were selling SMR drives without labeling them (in both external hard disks and internal drives), arguably selling an inferior product without warning customers. Some of these complaints even led to a $2.7 million class-action settlement with Western Digital in 2021.

                  So Is SMR Bad? Which Drive Type Should I Choose?

                  Whether SMR is bad or not is a subjective call. If you want massive amounts of storage for less money and you don’t mind the performance penalties involved, an SMR drive might be an OK choice for you. Typically, a 16TB SMR drive costs less than a 16 TB CMR drive, for example. If you use a drive for occasional single-disk backups, an SMR drive might be fine.

                  But beware: A major drawback of SMR found in testing by ServeTheHome is that using a slow SMR drive in a RAID array can put the entire array’s data at risk for longer because it takes far longer for the SMR drive to get integrated into the array. So using SMR drives in a NAS with multiple disks is probably not a good idea.

                  Luckily, some manufacturers such as Seagate have begun publishing data online that clearly shows which drives in their lineup use SMR or CMR technology, although most still do not clearly label the drives as SMR or CMR when you purchase them from a retailer. Still, with this data in your hands, you can make a more informed purchasing decision—such as selecting a CMR drive to use in a home-built external USB drive.

                  Overall, we recommend purchasing CMR drives whenever possible due to the performance issues with SMR drives. But it remains a personal and budget choice depending on your situation and how you use the drive. Good luck.

                  Tesla is ready to offer its own SSD that can be used to store video games and Sentry Mode videos, but it isn’t going to be cheap.

                  While Tesla drivers have been using third-party SSDs for years, the process to make that work isn’t quite as simply as some would like. Now, Tesla is fixing that with its own first-party SSD so long as you are willing to pay.

                  Why would you want an SSD in your Tesla? The company just announced that the Model S and Model X vehicles can now play games via Steam, which means that space is going to become a problem for some. Some Steam games can tale up to 100GB of storage, and then there are the Sentry Mode videos that the car generates as well.

                  So to fix all of that Tesla has announced its own 1TB SSD. But it’s expensive, running at $350.

                  Yesterday I published Ten Canva Features for Students – An Experiment. The first part of the experiment was publishing a blog post that was written entirely by the artificial intelligence platform ChatGPT. The second part of the experiment was to compare the visits to that blog post with those of blog posts on the same topic. That part is still a work in progress. In the meantime, I thought I’d share a short overview of ChatGPT (not written by me, not ChatGPT). 

                  ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence tool that will create documents for you based on some minimal input from you. For example, I simply typed into ChatGPT “Ten Canva Features for Students” and got the article that you saw yesterday. ChatGPT can also be used to create poems like this one about the sunglasses worn by Geraint Thomas

                  With a little tweaking of what you put into ChatGPT you can create longer articles than the one that I published yesterday. A simple, “tell me more” or “what about X” can generate more material from ChatGPT.

                  In a recent tweet, Elon Musk said that Twitter rules on doxxing apply to journalists as much as anyone else.

                  Several prominent journalists on Twitter have had their accounts suspended because they ‘violated the Twitter rules’.

                  This includes Irish CNN correspondent Donie O’Sullivan, Ryan Mac of The New York Times, Drew Harwell of The Washington Post, Matt Binder of Mashable, Micah Lee of The Intercept and independent journalists Aaron Rupar, Keith Olbermann and Tony Webster.

                  The official Twitter account of Mastodon, which many regard as an alternative to Twitter, has also been suspended and links to its servers have been banned.

                  Earlier this week, Elon Musk – Twitters new owner – suspended more than two dozen accounts that tracked plans of government agencies, billionaires and other individuals in the public realm, according to The New York Times.

                  The list of accounts suspended includes one by 20-year-old college student Jack Sweeney, who became famous for using publicly available data to track Musk’s travels in his private planes.

                  While Musk had earlier defended the @ElonJet account and decided against its suspension on grounds of free speech, his latest move marks a sharp U-turn from that commitment.

                  “My commitment to free speech extends even to not banning the account following my plane, even though that is a direct personal safety risk,” Musk tweeted last month.

                  While Twitter did not give a clear reason for the latest journalist account suspensions, other than for ‘violating’ Twitter rules, The New York Times reports that some of them had either written or tweeted about accounts that tracked private planes.

                  For many accounts that link to Mastodon servers, the links no longer work and any link to a blocked Mastodon server are accompanied by the “Warning: this link may be unsafe”.

                  It is not clear what exactly prompted Musk to make the latest changes`, but he said in a recent tweet that rules on ‘doxxing’, or sharing someone else’s personal information, apply to journalists as well as anyone else on the social media platform.

                  Apple has today released download of iOS 16.3 beta 1 IPSW links and OTA profile file to developers and will likely make it available to those on the public beta program within days.

                  Those who have the correct developer profile installed on their iPhone can download the update now.

                  This new beta arrives just 24 hours after Apple made iOS 16.2 available to the public, adding support for features that include the Freeform app, tweaked Always On Display for iPhone 14 Pro devices, and more.

                  It isn’t yet clear what Apple has added in this latest version of iOS but there are a number of features that are still expected to arrive before iOS 17 is announced in June 2023. Apple already announced the Apple Car Savings Account and Apple Pay Later, but neither feature has arrived so far. Neither has Apple Music Classical, a spin-off of Apple Music that hasn’t been announced but has been heavily rumored.

                  We’re also waiting for Apple to make Advanced Data Protection for iCloud available to additional countries after releasing it to those in the United States already, too.

                  Alongside iOS 16.3 beta 1, Apple has also released iPadOS 16.3 beta 1, watchOS 9.3 beta 1, tvOS 16.3 beta 1, and macOS 13.2 beta 1. There is currently no indication of when any of these updates will ship to the public, but it won’t happen before the end of the year given the length of previous beta programs.

                  We’re witnessing the brain death of Twitter

                  Twitter has suspended the accounts of several high-profile journalists, many of whom have been reporting on Elon Musk’s controversial takeover of the company.

                  So far, the journalists who have been suspended include Donie O’Sullivan from CNN, Drew Harwell of the Washington Post, Ryan Mac of the New York Times, Matt Binder of Mashable, and Micah Lee of The Intercept. The sudden purging of journalists seems to contradict Musk’s stated commitment to protecting freedom of speech on Twitter.

                  “I was very baffled. I thought people were trolling,” said independent journalist and former Vox reporter Aaron Rupar, recounting when he started getting messages from other journalists telling him he’d been suspended. Overnight, Rupar lost access to his 790,000 followers. He said he received no warning before being booted. “You basically have to comply with the whims that change day-by-day of the owner of the platform, that seems pretty unsustainable. It almost seems kind of spiteful.”

                  Several of the journalists who posted have been suspended, including Rupar, had recently posted about the debate over Elonjet — a Twitter account that tracked the whereabouts of Musk’s private aircraft using publicly available flight data. Musk has argued that the account was jeopardizing his physical safety and changed Twitter’s rules to ban the sharing of “live location information” in order to suspend the account. Elonjet’s 20-year-old account owner argued that the information about Elon Musk’s jets are already public — “If someone wanted to do something, they could do it without me,” he told The New York Times. Some journalists, such as Rupar, had recently tweeted out links to Muskjet’s alternate Facebook account.

                  Twitter’s head of Trust and Safety Ella Irwin told The Verge’s Alex Heath that Twitter “will suspend any accounts that violate our privacy policies and put other users at risk,” and that “we don’t make exceptions to this policy for journalists or any other accounts.”

                  On Thursday evening, Elon Musk replied to a tweet about the suspension of former MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann and said that he has given reporters a “7 day suspension for doxxing. Some time away from Twitter is good for the soul.” Doxxing is a term used to describe when people post private information about others online.

                  Musk recently tweeted that a “crazy stalker” followed a car carrying his young child, X, and jumped onto the hood of the car. Musk said he is taking legal action against the 20-year-old owner of the Elonjet account for allegedly jeopardizing his family’s safety.

                  Many journalists on Thursday night expressed concern about Twitter’s decisions. The move could prompt more reporters or the media outlets they work for to leave Twitter and try using alternate platforms, such as Mastodon, Discord, and Post.

                  “It’s very shady,” said Washington Post tech columnist Taylor Lorenz, who said her account hasn’t been suspended in this wave, despite worries from some of her followers that it might have been. “I don’t understand how news organizations are going to continue to use this platform if they are censoring journalists.”

                  CNN and The New York Times both sent statements to Recode condemning Twitter’s suspension of their reporters accounts, and said they are asking the company for an explanation.

                  “The impulsive and unjustified suspension of a number of reporters, including CNN’s Donie O’Sullivan, is concerning but not surprising,” said a spokesperson from CNN in an emailed statement. “Twitter’s increasing instability and volatility should be of incredible concern for everyone who uses Twitter. We have asked Twitter for an explanation, and we will reevaluate our relationship based on that response.”

                  “Tonight’s suspension of the Twitter accounts of a number of prominent journalists, including The New York Times’s Ryan Mac, is questionable and unfortunate. Neither The Times nor Ryan have received any explanation about why this occurred,” said a spokesperson for The New York Times in a written statement. “We hope that all of the journalists’ accounts are reinstated and that Twitter provides a satisfying explanation for this action.”

                  Rupar said he tried to appeal his Twitter suspension using the platform’s automated system for doing so, but the link was broken.

                  “I think it is a cautionary lesson here for outlets and individual journalists. It’s good to diversify to other platforms. It will have a chilling effect of anyone criticizing Elon.”

                  Twitter has suspended the accounts of several prominent reporters who cover Elon Musk, including Ryan Mac of The New York Times, CNN’s Donie O’Sullivan, The Washington Post’s Drew Harwell, The Intercept’s Micha Lee, Mashable’s Matt Binder, Aaron Rupar, and Tony Webster. This evening, Musk logged into a Twitter Space to try to explain why, and ran a poll asking when the journalists should be unbanned — in both instances, things didn’t exactly go his way.

                  The reporters who have been banned all seem to have recently tweeted about Musk’s attempts to crack down on the sharing of the whereabouts of his private jet. Apparently, though, accounts that can’t post can still join a Twitter Spaces live audio chat. In a Space that included Harwell, Binder, and the ElonJet account, Musk eventually tried to explain himself.

                  “You dox, you get suspended. End of story, that’s it.”

                  In that conversation, Musk accused the journalists of “ban evasion.” Once the ElonJet account had been banned from Twitter, its owner set up accounts on Facebook and Mastodon. By posting links to those accounts, he argued, the journalists were trying to get around his ban.

                  The Washington Post’s Harwell asked Musk how Musk’s decision to ban accounts sharing the other ElonJet sites — as well as journalists reporting on the incident — was different from Twitter’s earlier treatment of a New York Post story about a laptop containing Hunter Biden’s personal information. In 2020, Twitter made a moderation decision to block links to The New York Post story.

                  Details on that moderation decision were released on Twitter earlier this month — with Musk’s support. (In April, he tweeted that suspending The New York Post’s account because of the story “was obviously incredibly inappropriate.) Musk even teased the release of the information by saying, “This will be awesome” and tweeting popcorn emoji. In the course of the release, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey’s email address was revealed.

                  Musk replied to Harwell by saying, “You dox, you get suspended. End of story, that’s it.” He then left the space.

                  In an email to The Verge, Twitter’s head of trust and safety, Ella Irwin, pointed to a policy update the company made yesterday prohibiting the sharing of “live location information, including information shared on Twitter directly or links to 3rd-party URL(s) of travel routes.”

                  “Without commenting on any specific accounts, I can confirm that we will suspend any accounts that violate our privacy policies and put other users at risk,” Irwin said in the email. “We don’t make exceptions to this policy for journalists or any other accounts.”

                  In a tweet earlier in the evening, Musk said of the bans: “They posted my exact real-time location, basically assassination coordinates, in (obvious) direct violation of Twitter terms of service” he said. The ElonJet account in the links he objected to automatically shares publicly available information on the flight path for Elon Musk’s private jet. (It does not list the passenger manifest.)

                  Accounts like ElonJet —and the similarly suspended CelebJet and RUOligarchJets — are frequently used by climate activists to highlight the egregious effect private jets have on the environment. Musk, Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian, and Taylor Swift have all come under fire this year for using jets when alternative means of transportation could be used with less deleterious effects on the environment.

                  Musk has long had issue with the location of his private jet being shared in real time. At one point, he went so far as to offer thousands of dollars to the manager of the @ElonJet account to take it offline. On Wednesday, he implied in a tweet that the account had been used by a “crazy stalker” to find and climb on the hood of a car carrying one of his children. (It is unclear how the location of the jet led to a car.) He then tweeted a video of the alleged stalker and his license plate with the caption: “Anyone recognize this person or car?”

                  That same day, Twitter suspended the @ElonJet account, the account belonging to its owner Jack Sweeney, and other accounts he managed that were tracking the locations of private jets using publically accessible data. Today, the enforcement was ratcheted up to include journalists tweeting about the situation.

                  Musk also ran a poll asking when he should un-suspend the journalists who tweeted about “ElonJet.” “Now” won with 43 percent of the vote (“Longer” was runner up with 38.1 percent). In response, Musk said he’d redo the poll because the original had too many options. He then posted a second poll, which will run for 24 hours. As of this writing, “now” is still winning.

                  Musk’s polls supposedly have weight in his moderation decisions. Previously, he has said he unbanned Trump, as well as other previously suspended accounts, based on poll results.

                  It also appears that Twitter is not letting people post links to some instances of the competing decentralized social network Mastodon. Specifically, our tests showed an error saying “we can’t complete this request because this link has been identified by Twitter or our partners as being potentially harmful” when trying to tweet links to Mastodon.social, Mastodon.lol, Mastodon.xyz, Mastodon.au, Mastodon.ie, Mastodon.scot, Mastodonapp.uk, Mastodon.world, and others. Earlier today, Mastodon’s Twitter account was suspended after it tweeted a link to the ElonJet Mastodon account.

                  “I have not received any communications from Twitter whatsoever, other than a notice at the top of my feed that I am permanently banned and in read-only mode,” said Rupar, one of the reporters who was suspended, in an email to The Verge. “I have no idea what could have prompted this.” In a story on his Substack, he said that yesterday he posted a tweet “noting that the ElonJet account that was suspended from Twitter was still active on Facebook, with a link to the Facebook page”

                  A statement from The New York Times spokesperson Charlie Stadtlander echoes the sentiment, saying that “neither The Times nor Ryan have received any explanation about why this occurred. We hope that all of the journalists’ accounts are reinstated and that Twitter provides a satisfying explanation for this action.” CNN posted a statement calling O’Sullivan’s suspension “concerning but not surprising,” and said that it will “reevaluate” its relationship with Twitter based on the explanation it gets for the ban.

                  The suspensions don’t appear to be entirely limited to journalists. Commentator Keith Olbermann has been suspended, as has the Twitter account for ADS-B Exchange, which describes itself as “the world’s largest source of open unblocked unfiltered flight data for enthusiasts.” The account recently quote-retweeted someone trying to track Musk’s jet, according to a WayBack Machine archive.

                  Musk has previously promised to make Twitter a hub for “free speech,” and held up the @ElonJet account as the type of thing he would permit on the platform, even though it could cause him harm. “My commitment to free speech extends even to not banning the account following my plane, even though that is a direct personal safety risk” he tweeted on November 6th.

                  “We’re never going back,” declare Jonathon and Cory Drayer of Fredericksburg, Va. Both recently traded their respective SUVs for electric vehicles (EVs), and happily swore off every buying another internal combustion engine (ICE) powered vehicle. Jonathon and Cory are among the vanguard of a much hoped-for change: the EV-only family.

                  Their switch to EVs was also providential. After moving to a home much further away from their respective workplaces, each would have become part of the gasoline “superusers” club. Club members make up the 10 percent of U.S. motorists who, according to a
                  study by the environmental group Coltura, drive 30,000 miles or more a year and use an estimated 32 percent of all gasoline. That gasoline consumption is more than the bottom 60 percent of American drivers combined, Coltura says.


                  Getting these superusers into EVs as soon as possible, Coltura argues, is essential for the U.S. to reach its
                  2030 decarbonization objectives. Transportation is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for 27 percent of total GHG emissions in the U.S. and a similar amount in Europe. Passenger cars and light duty trucks account for about 57 percent of those totals. Transitioning from ICE vehicles to EVs is one important way to reduce these emissions. Therefore, Coltura asserts, instead of offering EV incentives to everyone who purchases an EV, generous incentives instead should be targeted towards the estimated 25 million gasoline superusers. As technology historian Melvin Kranzberg has observed, “Although technology might be a prime element in many public issues, nontechnical factors take precedence in technology-policy decisions.”

                  For example, governmental policies and subsidies intended to encourage the use of electric vehicles and discourage ICE vehicles must encompass the
                  260 million-plus privately owned vehicles in the U.S. alone, and eventually the other 1.2 billion vehicles owned world-wide, both numbers which will keep growing. EV offerings from legacy and start-up vehicle manufacturers must expand at volume rapidly to meet the policy-driven ICE replacement requirements. Then there is the willingness of hundreds of millions of ICE vehicle drivers the world over to alter their personal behaviors, lifestyles, and for many their livelihoods, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

                  Rural areas make up 86 percent of U.S. land area, and 60 million of America’s population. They cannot be ignored in the EV transition.

                  When 10 percent of drivers use a third of all gasoline, one must consider the mainly rural areas where they reside and the pickup trucks and SUVs they likely drive. For example, with 13 percent of its drivers using 37 percent of the gasoline, Wyoming is second on Coltura’s list of states with the highest percentage of gasoline superusers. Consider further that
                  nine out of ten most popular Wyoming vehicles are pickup trucks or SUVs, with over 280,000 pick-up trucks and 240,000 SUVs registered in the state.

                  Getting Wyomingites into EVs, considering there were only
                  456 electric cars and light trucks registered statewide as of March 2022, with 95 being non-Tesla vehicles, will be tricky. Not surprisingly, nearly all the state’s existing 169 public EV charging ports, 75 of which are faster chargers, are part of the Tesla charging network. The lack of EV charging opportunities is endemic across rural areas.

                  The
                  Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) submitted its National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Deployment Plan (pdf) to the Federal Highway Administration in June. The plan detailed how the state would use its $24 million allocation from the $5 billion committed in the federal Infrastructure, Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) and the $1.2 million from the Volkswagen diesel scandal settlement to place EV charging stations every fifty miles across Wyoming’s 913 miles of interstate highway.

                  Woe is Wyoming

                  There is a hitch in the plan, however. Wyoming’s NEVI plan states the
                  detailed IIJA charging station requirements to receive funding “would not allow any single NEVI-sized station to be profitable in Wyoming until the 2040s.” Since the state “has no desire to establish infrastructure that will likely fail,” it requested a waiver from the federal requirements to better serve not only Wyomingites’ EVs, but tourists’ EVs visiting the state’s ski resorts and national parks like Yellowstone. Tourist attractions are expected to see the most use of any new EV charging stations for at least the next several years.

                  In September, the Federal Highway Administration
                  approved $9.7 million for Wyoming’s plan but refused to grant 8 of the 11 EV station waivers it requested. Wyoming will start developing the seven of its proposed EV charging stations that meet IIJA requirements next year, but it remains to be seen whether any future federal monies will be provided if Wyoming can’t get the denied waivers overturned.

                  The predominance of Teslas in Wyoming mirrors another reality for most gasoline superusers. Coltura found that superusers generally have the same economic status as non-superusers with a household
                  median income of around $70,000. However, their income lags in relation to EV owners whose household median income is around $100,000, which make up about the top 34 percent of U.S. households.

                  Battery electric vehicle owners, “[E]arn a lot more than not just the U.S. population, but for the population of new vehicle buyers,” says Alexander Edwards of
                  Strategic Vision, a firm that helps companies understand human behavior and decision-making patterns.

                  Edwards adds, “They’re buying these vehicles not just for their environmental friendliness, although that is a nice thing to have, but they are really buying them for their superior acceleration that outperforms other vehicles.”

                  Battery life, reliability and
                  charging infrastructure are going to be factors in convincing current rural owning ICE F-150 owners to switch to EVs.

                  The average
                  Tesla owner’s income approaches $150,000, or about the top 20 percent of U.S. households. Wyoming gasoline superusers seeking the capabilities of ICE SUVs and pickups might find these EVs beyond their means, despite generous incentives.

                  Coltura’s analysis further indicates that 9 percent of U.S. gasoline superusers drive Ford’s F-Series pickups. Fancifully assuming that only the approximately
                  2.5 million Ford F-Series gasoline superuser pickup drivers in the U.S. were allowed to purchase the new Ford electric F-150 Lightnings, it would take more than 15 years at Ford’s announced production rates to replace them all. Nor is there an obvious plan for convincing the owners of all the other 13.6 million non-superuser F-Series vehicles on the road to replace them with equivalent EVs that Ford plans to introduce.

                  About 200,000 people
                  have placed orders for the Lightning, but Ford’s CEO Jim Farley revealed that only about “30 percent is (from) F-150 customers…70 percent are new to the brand and new to pickups.” Reportedly, some 40 percent of orders are from those already owning EVs, with a sizable chunk probably being Tesla owners wanting more cargo space. Jonathon, who owns a Tesla, has ordered a Chevrolet electric Silverado RST for that exact reason. Even more gasoline superusers drive General Motors vehicles than Fords—there are 22.1 million current owners of its full-sized pickups and SUVs—so GM faces similar challenges persuading its legacy customer-base to switch to EVs.

                  Rural driving requirements are different

                  Wyoming gasoline superusers and others in states like Idaho, Montana, and South Dakota are likely to have additional concerns about buying EVs. For instance, a Ford-150 superuser buying a Lightning and driving it the same number of miles will find that their
                  battery warranty will expire in about 3.5 years. High mileage driving in harsh terrain and climate conditions in western states are unknown factors on battery life, as is the eventual cost of replacing a Lightning battery pack, which currently runs from current estimates of $28,556 to $35,960. Even average Wyomingites keep their vehicles for 14 years and drive an average of nearly 17,000 miles-a-year.

                  Battery life, reliability and
                  charging infrastructure are going to be factors in convincing current rural owning ICE F-150 owners to switch to EVs, especially if they need to tow trailers. Ford CEO Jim Fairly acknowledges that in mountainous states, driving requirements are “different than how we’ve designed (our EV) vehicles so far.”

                  Another potential bump in the road: EVs are designed for over-the-air software service and feature updates, but cell service
                  can be highly unreliable in rural areas. Lengthy trips to dealers are inevitable given the current poor software reliability of EVs, assuming there are nearby dealers to support them.

                  Furthermore, rural residents tend to be less supportive of climate action than urban residents,
                  even controlling for political partisanship and other demographics. Appealing to them to convert to EVs for the good of the environment is not likely to be enthusiastically received.

                  One might object to this analysis on the grounds that Wyoming is an outlier, and that the EV transition
                  will be easier in other states. The issue is not Wyoming, per se, but rural communities in general, their driving requirements and the capability of the electrical grid to support EVs at scale in those communities. Rural areas make up 86 percent of U.S. land area, and 60 million of America’s population. They cannot be ignored in the EV transition.

                  It’s an understatement to say that it is crucial to coherently manage the totality of the risk ecology associated with…the transition from ICE vehicle to EV ownership.

                  Besides, getting rural gasoline superusers to give up gasoline powered SUVs and pickups might be only marginally harder than motivating the driving populace, which also
                  like to drive SUVs and pickup trucks, to switch. Potential EV owners desire an acceptable level of risk or security when purchasing a vehicle. They want a long-lasting, reliable vehicle that meets their specific needs at an affordable price and can be refueled with minimum concern—as they have now. They may compromise some, says Strategic Vision’s Edwards, but not much.

                  Without attaining a clear-cut level of EV purchase risk acceptability, it will be nearly impossible to get the
                  60 percent of U.S. households with two or more ICE vehicles to feel confident enough to become EV-only families. Even among current EV owners, only about 10 percent are EV-only households.

                  Can governmental EV policies achieve this level of acceptable risk, given the countless swirling crosscurrents of competing and conflicting interests that EVs at scale present?

                  The answer to this question is especially important in the U.S. given that EV policies underpin the Biden Administration’s economic transformation plans. EVs at scale are not merely a new technology introduction, like the switch over to HDTV or a new civil engineering project like building the U.S. interstate highway system. EVs at scale have substantially greater impacts on far more industries, social and political structures, national and global economic, security and political competition, and of course the global climate.

                  It’s an understatement to say that it is crucial to coherently manage the totality of the risk ecology associated with the massive social, economic, political and environmental adjustments initiated by the transition from ICE vehicle to EV ownership.

                  As
                  Larry Burns, a former GM executive told the Wall Street Journal, there is a “Rubik’s cube of complexity” of policy and its implementation that requires thoughtful sorting through all the risks/benefits tradeoffs involved.

                  In the next several articles of this series, we will continue to explore the multiple social infrastructure challenges to transitioning to EVs at scale, beginning with the policy challenges.

                  Sam Mulvey built his own radio station in Tacoma, WA. Is there a better way to meld ham radio practice with a colossal number of DIY electrical and computer projects? Sam would say there isn’t one! This 45-minute talk is basically the lessons-learned review of setting up KTQA 95.3 – the radio station on the hill.

                  Sam starts out the talk by introducing you to LPFM. And maybe you didn’t know that there’s a special type of license issued by the US FCC allowing non-profit community radio stations up to 100 W, covering an radius of around 5 km. It’s like running a pirate radio station, but by jumping through a few legal hoops, made legal.

                  Trash on the Radio

                  Putting a radio station together on a budget requires a ton of clever choices, flexibility, and above all, luck. But if you’re willing to repair a busted CD player or turntable, scrounge up some used computers, and work on your own amplifiers, the budget doesn’t have to be the limiting factor.

                  Being cheap means a lot of DIY. For instance, Sam and friends made a custom console to support all the gear and hide all the wiring. Some hot tips from the physical build-out: painted cinderblocks make great studio monitor stands, and Cat-5 can carry two channels of balanced audio along with power, with sufficient isolation that it all sounds clean.

                  But not everything in the KTQA studio is cheap. Sam spends the money when it counts, and first splurge was quality microphones. And thanks to the rise of podcasting and streaming, items that used to be clear DIY choices like microphone stands and sound dampening material are now into Sam’s buy-vs-build category.

                  Open Source on the Airwaves

                  Sam then goes through all of the software that runs the station. Perhaps not apparent to those outside the scene, the Linux audio ecology has grown up enough that it can meet the needs of the professional studio. All the usual suspects are here, from Jack to Audacity and ffmpeg. Using an open production toolchain allows Sam to write some of his own tools too, and that includes a studio automation tool, VU meters over websockets, and a dead-air detector.

                  SDR tools are in abundance for monitoring their local output for making sure they’re not overmodulating or stomping on other nearby signals. But Sam is also planning to do a live comparison of their coverage when running in stereo vs mono by “FM Wardriving” around Tacoma to see which comes in best.

                  Finally, Sam talks about future projects – hooking the entire studio management up to MQTT to make wireless “On the Air” lights and coordinate other services, and playing around with the RDSS radio data service, because when you have your own radio station, why not?

                  A Dream Fulfilled

                  Sam has always wanted to be on the air, and is a hacker at heart. The community radio scene enables him to do it all. It looks like tremendously fertile ground for all sorts of fun and mayhem. And an FCC window for LPFM licensing is coming up soon, so if you’re at all interested in getting your junk on the air, look around for a local LPFM station and volunteer, and if you haven’t got one, you might just have to make one.                   Jack Sweeney, a sophomore at the University of Central Florida, was a big fan of the billionaire industrialist Elon Musk. In 2020, Sweeney launched a Twitter account, @ElonJet, that used public air-travel data to map the flights of Musk’s private jet, thinking it’d be cool to track how Musk managed his business empire.

                  But when Sweeney woke up Wednesday morning, he was stunned to see that the 530,000-follower account on Twitter, the social media platform Musk bought in October, had been “permanently suspended” without explanation. A notice on Sweeney’s Twitter account said only that the company had, “after careful review … determined your account broke the Twitter rules,” without saying which rules it broke.

                  On Wednesday evening, the account was briefly restored, with Twitter outlining new rules seemingly designed to prevent Sweeney from posting the real-time locations of planes used by Musk and other public figures as long as he included a slight delay. Sweeney, over Twitter, asked Musk how long he’d have to delay the data to comply.

                  But Wednesday evening, Musk threatened to escalate the conflict against Sweeney, saying a car carrying Musk’s son, X Æ A-12, had been “followed by [a] crazy stalker” in Los Angeles, implying without providing evidence that location data had been a factor in the purported episode. “Legal action is being taken against Sweeney & organizations who supported harm to my family,” Musk tweeted.

                  Sweeney, 20, shared publicly available information about Musk’s flights, not his family members or his cars. The records stopped and ended at airports, and Musk has provided no further detail as to what legal basis Musk would cite in a lawsuit.

                  Musk, a self-described “free speech absolutist,” had been critical of Sweeney’s account but pledged last month to keep it online, tweeting, “My commitment to free speech extends even to not banning the account following my plane, even though that is a direct personal safety risk.”

                  But to Sweeney, the abrupt suspension suggested Musk’s commitment to free expression ended as soon as it involved Musk’s personal life.

                  “I mean, this looks horrible. He literally said he was keeping my account up for free speech,” Sweeney said before Musk’s legal threat. “He’s trying to bring the company to profitability, and this is the last thing he needs.”

                  Sweeney’s other Twitter accounts, which tracked the air travel of college sports teams, celebrities and politicians, including Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, climate envoy John F. Kerry and former president Donald Trump, remained online for several hours after the Musk jet account was suspended.

                  But on Wednesday afternoon, after Sweeney began discussing the issue publicly, those accounts as well as Sweeney’s personal account were suspended.

                  Twitter also blocked people from tweeting a link to a version of the account Sweeney runs on Instagram. When a user tries to tweet the link, Twitter says, “We can’t complete this request because this link has been identified by Twitter or our partners as being potentially harmful.”

                  A former Twitter employee, who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retribution, said the company previously had reviewed the account and determined it did not violate the company’s rules because the information it posted was available publicly. It was also not in violation of Twitter’s policy on private information, the former employee said.

                  Musk did not respond to requests for comment. Most of Twitter’s communications department has been laid off.

                  Sweeney shared a message from Twitter on Wednesday that said his personal account had been suspended for violating its rules against “platform manipulation and spam” because it had used Twitter to “artificially amplify or suppress information or engage in behavior that manipulates or disrupts people’s experience on Twitter.” It also said any of his attempts to create a new account would be suspended as well.

                  Sweeney’s personal account was not automated, and all of the jet-tracking accounts made explicit reference to the fact that they were automated accounts, which Twitter allows.

                  By Wednesday, an update appeared on Twitter’s private information and media policy that appeared to explicitly prohibit the type of activity conducted by Sweeney’s accounts. The new policy outlawed the sharing of “live location information, including information shared on Twitter directly or links to 3rd-party URL(s) of travel routes, actual physical location, or other identifying information that would reveal a person’s location, regardless if this information is publicly available.”

                  The Wayback Machine, an internet archive, showed that the page was updated sometime within the last day. In a tweet late Wednesday, Musk said, “Real-time posting of someone else’s location violates doxxing policy, but delayed posting of locations are ok.”

                  Sweeney said he started the @ElonJet account in 2020 by using a publicly available set of records documenting all planes’ air travel, known as ADS-B data, to give a general outline of where and when the jet was landing and taking off.

                  The Washington Post had a year earlier used similar records to report on Musk’s management style and raise questions about the frequent flights’ financial and environmental costs.

                  On Twitter, the @ElonJet account had become a reliable way for critics, fans and investors to track Musk’s whereabouts as his plane hopped from the Austin area, where he lives, to the San Francisco Bay area, where his carmaker Tesla maintains its factory, and to Southern California, where SpaceX, one of Musk’s other companies, is based.

                  The movement of the jet did not necessarily indicate that Musk was on board, and the account provided no details on who flew with Musk or where he went once the plane had landed.

                  Musk offered Sweeney $5,000 to buy the @ElonJet account last year, the website Protocol reported in January, but the two men couldn’t come to a deal after Sweeney countered with an asking price of $50,000. Musk had opened their exchange asking: “Can you take this down? It is a security risk.” He added in a direct message cited by Protocol, “I don’t love the idea of being shot by a nutcase.”

                  Sweeney told The Post in October, shortly after Musk’s $44 billion Twitter takeover, that he didn’t believe his account would be taken down. “I personally think he won’t do it because then the news would be all over it and he would be called a hypocrite,” he said.

                  But Sweeney said then that he had begun creating similar accounts on other social media platforms “just in case something happens” and was considering making a backup account in case of an outright ban.

                  Earlier this week, Sweeney began to worry about the account’s future. Sweeney shared a screenshot he said was sent to him by a Twitter employee that purported to show a Twitter executive asking to apply heavy “visibility filtering” to the @ElonJet account “immediately.” The Post could not independently confirm the message.

                  Such “visibility filtering” measures have been at the center of debates over whether Twitter was “shadow banning” conservatives. A bundle of documents Musk granted to select journalists, called the Twitter Files, showed that company moderators had used “visibility filtering” to limit the spread of content Twitter executives had seen as harmful in a way Musk had said was oppressive.

                  The sudden banning of the jet account, followed by its reversal as new rules were unveiled, potentially adds to the spate of rash decisions Musk has made since taking over Twitter. Musk fired Twitter’s top executives upon arriving, conducted steep layoffs that cut the staff in half and issued an ultimatum to workers to commit to an “extremely hardcore” Twitter or accept a severance package.

                  Meanwhile, the New York Times reported on Tuesday that Twitter had not paid rent for its San Francisco headquarters in weeks. A person with knowledge of the arrangements, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss them, confirmed to The Post that Twitter had stopped paying its rent and appeared to be vacating one of its two buildings, an office building housing Twitter’s main lobby.

                  Much of the company’s equipment, including a Twitter logo statue, industrial-grade kitchen appliances and office electronics, recently appeared on an auction website.

                  Workers had been instructed to pull all remaining office equipment from one of Twitter’s buildings, the person said. The plan, the person said, was to remove all of the equipment and cease payment. Workers, including Twitter’s own staffers, were hauling items such as chairs and commercial kitchen equipment down an industrial elevator.

                  The rash and seemingly overnight decision to effectively downsize Twitter from two buildings to one caught many workers by surprise. “They’ve basically shut off that entire building and the bridge to it,” the person said.

                  Sweeney said Wednesday he was working to assure the accounts remained active on other platforms, including on the chat and social media services Facebook, Instagram and Telegram. He also created an account on Mastodon, a Twitter competitor, early Wednesday that gained 7,000 followers within a few hours.

                  The episode, Sweeney said, has led him to question his original enthusiasm about Musk’s business genius.

                  “There’s a little side of him that seems like he can’t stand some people, and I think he just had enough,” he said. “Every move he’s making is giving him worse PR.”

                  On-Call The week, and indeed the year, may be ebbing away to their respective conclusions, but The Register continues to toil away at On-Call, our weekly reader-contributed tale of techies triumphing under trying circumstances.

                  This week, meet a chap we’ll Regomize as “Kris” who arrived at his desk one Monday morning to find the phone ringing off the hook, a full voicemail inbox, and his pager pinging with urgent messages from his manager.

                  The cause of all that urgency was a dead server that powered an important application.

                  Kris quickly inspected the machine, which was connected to power and had working UPSes. No tell-tale smell suggested something inside had expired. Turning everything and anything off and on again had no effect.

                  “The unit was dead as a doornail, as they say,” Kris wrote.

                  The only thing to do was therefore to call the company’s service provider for help.

                  “This was one of those situations where I really didn’t want to deal with them because in most instances by the time they sent over a tech, the problem was already resolved either by the user or by myself,” Kris told us. But at this stage a second opinion was the only option.

                  “About five hours later the tech shows up smelling as if he lived in his car and slept in his ashtray,” Kris told to On-Call. Within five minutes he’d diagnosed the server as broken and new power supplies as the fix.

                  That hardware arrived two days later and – after Kris and the techie grunted and hefted the server to get it installed – failed to fix the dead box.

                  Kris confessed to The Register that part of him didn’t mind this at all, because seeing the smug techie brought down a peg was quite fun.

                  However by this time – three days into an incident that deprived the company of an important application – Kris was under more than a little pressure.

                  So he concurred with the visiting tech’s blankly amused observation that the server remained broken and that the motherboard must be the real problem.

                  Three days later a new motherboard arrived and – after more lifting and sweat – did nothing to restore the server to working order.

                  But all that work did set Kris on the way to finding a fix, because handling the case set in train another thought: were the interlock switches working?

                  Interlock switches, for the uninitiated, are safety mechanisms that stop current flowing when cases are open. Which is a fine idea because nobody should be electrocuted while working on a server.

                  It transpired that one of the switches had broken on this server, but the fault was invisible and undetectable.

                  “I’d never opened up the server in my time at this job,” Kris said. “I made a quick trip over to R&D and one of the engineers pulled a similar switch out of their parts and gave one to me. The tech wired in a new switch and we were good to go.”

                  This incident is not a typical On-Call triumph.

                  That came – or rather, didn’t come – in the following weeks and months, when Kris’s inbox never contained an invoice for the attempted fix by his external service provider. So while the incident was unpleasant, at least it didn’t cost Kris’s employer a cent!
