At the beginning of this month, a hard decision was made: the swizznvme plans offered at swizzin.net have hit the end of the line. Understandably, many folks are upset with the change and folks have been left wondering why. Anyone who already has a service has been contacted regarding the end of days; however, this message serves and an announcement to help folks understand what happened to the service.

Simply put, the unlimited nature of the swizznvme plans required a non-insignificant amount of funding to keep alive. As is, the service simply wasn’t bringing in enough revenue to make a profit — in fact, the service itself has been riding the line of no-profit to losing significant amounts of money since the service itself was launched.

I kept the service online and attempted to tweak the plans as I could to help encourage folks to sign up:

  • Iota (300GB) plans caused a huge strain in resources as these users generally used as much or more system resources than users on larger plans. These plans were nixed over the summer when resource issue became an issue.
  • Prices were raised to help offset the issue in general; however, signups dried up — folks did not want to pay higher prices so, prices were shortly lowered back to their original prices.
  • The Black Friday promotion was aimed at getting a number of users on the machine to help bring the revenue up to the point of at least breaking even. While all the nvme promotions sold out (12 in total); the resource usage spike as a result started causing instability on the server as the CPU started running at 75% average and RAM started to become scarce for the first time in a year.

Yes, the addition of only 12 users to the machine took the server from completely stable to fighting with OOM (out of memory) scenarios as new users tested the limits of the server. Even at this point, the server was not bringing in a positive revenue.

So, with resource usage nearing maximum, outgoing bandwidth at an all-time high and a significant amount of free space still unused on the server (read: technically room for more users, but at what cost?), it was at this time that I made the hard decision to shut the server down.

Thus, after almost exactly 1 year of service, the NVMe plans are no more. New orders and renewals have been disabled and affected folks have already been contacted. This message is largely for folks who stumble across the site and are wondering where the plans have gone.

It was a good run and I had high hopes for the service; however, in reality, there are significant challenges I had not anticipated when I eagerly started dreaming up the service. That said, the HDD line is alive and well and there’s no plans to make any changes to the service itself at this time. If folks are still looking for NVMe plans, please do checkout out Ultraseedbox — their hardware is exactly the same as mine; albeit, with metered bandwidth.

Until next time, stay safe and stay warm.

As this pandemic continues to drag on, concerns and questions continue to arise on a daily basis, such as:

  • “When will this all be over?”
  • “When can I go outside?”
  • “Will I be able to afford my swizzin seedbox this month?”

While I can’t answer the first two questions for you, swizzin is now introducing some long-term pricing relief on higher storage HDD plans and also some limited-time promotions that are applicable to new clients and old.

swizzin has offered only a limited number of promotions in the past and typically only to new customers. However, given the state of global welfare, I wanted to offer the chance to provide assistance to all customers, new and old. First off, we’ll go into the news regarding plans and will follow with the new promotions.

What’s New?

First off, semi-annual and annual pricing has been enabled for all plans. Semi-annual pricing nets you a 10% discount and annual pricing nets you a 20% discount on the monthly fee. That’s more than 2 months free if you commit to an annual term.

Furthermore, the Zeta-HDD (8TB) plan has been reintroduced along side a new Omega (12TB) plan. The newest addition to the swizzin HDD lineup has 12TB drives and as always, I continue to offer the ability to purchase a full drive that is reserved for your use only.

Finally, pricing on Delta-HDD and above plans have been permanently reduced. That’s right: the exact same plans are now cheaper. No strings attached. Pricing for the HDD plans from Gamma and up is now as follows:

  • Gamma: $25 / mo
  • Delta: $35 / mo
  • Epsilon: $50 / mo
  • Zeta: $64 / mo
  • Omega: $90 / mo

New Promotions

Lining up with the change in plans, swizzin is also introducing new promotions that apply to all users. This promotion will run until June 15th, 2020. All promo codes can only be used 1 time per client and for one product only (i.e. you are not able to combine this offer). In all cases, the promotion applies to a single invoice only and is not a recurring offer. The promo codes are as follows:

  • STAYHOME50 – Take 50% off a monthly invoice
  • STAYHOME40 – Take 40% off a quarterly invoice
  • STAYHOME30 – Take 30% off a semi-annual or annual invoice

If you are ordering a new service or are a new customer, then simply use the promo codes above during checkout and the discount will be automatically applied.

If you are a current customer and wish to apply the promotion to a current service, the stipulations are slightly different. In order to qualify for the promotion, you must make a change to your current service. This means either: upgrading your plan to a higher tier or changing your billing cycle. If you wish to downgrade, you will need to create a new order (you can do so with the promotion code) as downgrades are not supported. In all cases, the promotion pricing will take place on your next invoice. In order to take advantage of this promotion, you will need to open a ticket stating exactly what you want: a billing cycle change or a plan upgrade (or both).

If you are an HDD user, in the event that you decide to upgrade your plan, your slot will need to be transferred to a new server, so please take this into consideration when opening your ticket.

There’s a lot to sink in here, so please make sure to give this a thorough read-over and get in touch with a ticket if you have any questions!

That’s all for now, folks. Please remember to stay safe out there!

For those of you who may be unaware, Jellyfin is a free, opensource fork of Emby. As such, many features locked behind Emby Premiere are available freely in Jellyfin (such as hardware transcoding). If Plex or Emby isn’t your thing, then why not give Jellyfin a go?

Install it today with one simple command:

Continuing on the coattails of the recent addition of the NVME service, the HDD plans have received a revamp as well. As of today, new HDD plans are available for order. What’s new, you ask?

  • Bandwidth allocations have been doubled. The Alpha plan now comes with 8TB of transfer!
  • Drive size is now 6TB, but users per drive has been dropped to a maximum of 4
  • GPU Transcoding
  • Faster CPU with more threads
  • More RAM
  • Now hosted with Novoserve out of Delft

These upgrades have already been applied to current customers.

Unfortunately, some may perceive some possible downsides to the update:

  • Dedicated IP addresses are no longer available for purchase (their ordering has been disabled for some time already)
  • The Zeta HDD plan has been discontinued for now
  • Users no longer have the option of having a slot hosted at NForce

As always, users with any questions are encouraged to open a ticket or a pre-sales inquiry. Hope you enjoy the new offerings!

With the addition of the nvme lineup, it has come to my attention that there’s a rising demand for Usenet within the servers. Thus, I’ve added support for a second Usenet client: SABnzbd. If you prefer this client over nzbGet, you can easily install it today with the command:

box install sabnzbd

If you need any help getting SABnzbd connected with your current applications, please make sure to take a look at the documentation before opening a ticket.

Furthermore, I’ve written and added two new userspace guides for things that are frequently requested but outside of the current scope of supported applications, but easily installed in the permissive SSH environment:

These two guides are only the beginning of what I have planned to add to the documentation and there’s already been some requests and ideas for some other setup guides (such as a Deluge to rTorrent mover and rclone setup walkthroughs).

These will be coming in the future, so stay tuned!

First things first: Happy New Years! I hope everyone has had good holidays and is ready to settle into 2020.

This year, I wanted to shake things up by bringing a new offering to the swizzin lineup. I call it: swizznvme.

For the uninitiated, nvme drives are solid state storage technology that have moved beyond the basic SATA connections that storage technology has relied upon for years. Now, NVME drives are connected to PCI-express lanes and send/receive data directly to/from the CPU.

The result is even faster performance than an SSD.

To top it all off, these new NVME disks are paired with an unmetered pipe from Novoserve. If storage isn’t your primary concern, I’d highly recommend checking out the plans available as the bandwidth offerings are quite generous and the amount of solid state storage being offered at this price will beat nearly any competitor.

Check out the plans here! Pricing starts at $15.95/mo.

For the second item, I wanted to mention that a commonly requested feature has now been brought to the whole lineup: Deluge v2 support.

When installing Deluge, you’ll now have the option between v1.3.15 and v2.0.3. Simply choose which one you’d like to install.

Otherwise, if you’ve already installed Deluge and you want to upgrade, you can use the command box upgrade deluge to upgrade your current installation to the new client.

Be aware of a few caveats however: Deluge thin client support is limited in Windows and there is not yet an easy way to install v2. Furthermore, while upgrades in sessions are supported, downgrades are not. If you upgrade your slot, a backup will be created; however, if you decide you want to downgrade, you will have to reinstall Deluge and restore your session from the backup manually. Any torrents you may have added to the v2 session will need to be manually re-added yourself.

That’s all for now!

Hey everyone, welcome to the new website here at swizzin.net! A new coat of paint on top of the default WHMCS skin has been long overdue. I’m happy to say that it’s finally been completed and pushed live for your enjoyment. With that said, there are a few notes and new items worth checking out:

Discord

We now have an official discord server. You can use it as a place to gather and talk about community oriented items or look for unofficial support. There are channels for general, help and even server status updates. All-in-all, it’s just a great place to stay up to date about the latest happenings at swizzin.

Join here!

Server Status

Downtime is rare, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. For this reason, I’ve decided to add an uptime monitor directly the menu. If you need to know if your slot is down for everyone, or just for you, then the status page should be your first stop. The network updates page will also be used to help create issues about ongoing and future issues and maintenance on your slot. These two pages should be your first point of reference in checking about an outage. I do my best to respond to every ticket when there’s an outage, but it’s very rare that an outage is reported without me already being aware. (Unless, of course, it’s 4am and I’m sleeping).

That said, following the most recent downtime, I gained some extremely useful insights regarding certain stability issues on XL. I am constantly monitoring RAM and CPU usage on the server and am constantly looking for ways to refine and optimize the software and services. During the last downtime, I uncovered an issue with fail2ban — since addressing this issue, I’ve noted load average minimums have dropped to new lows and are more likely to stay there. Awesome!

WHMCS has moved

The new website now occupies the space which used to be dedicated to the WHMCS end of things. The new URL to access WHMCS (and your client area) is now: https://clients.swizzin.net

This will be where you can manage your services and check on invoices and support tickets. Please update any bookmarks you may have.

Legal

We now have outlined the Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, Acceptable Use Policy and Refund Policy. Please note that by continuing to use the service, you agree to abide by the terms outlined in the above agreements. If you have any questions regarding any of the policies, please feel free to open a ticket or a general inquiry on the contact page.

Future Plans: Knowledge Base

Almost as overdue as the website redesign. A knowledge base has been a highly requested feature, as many users can find the task of using swizzin for the first time daunting — especially since we only feature an informational dashboard and do not push “web installers”. The knowledge base is currently being populated and will hopefully be ready soon.

Stay tuned on this space for more news in the future!
