Fellow crumpeteer.

Loving the first three ideas there they could be fantastic use cases and lightweight!

Single biome masks sounds fantastic too! I can already see the drop down menu haha.

Macros : What are you most interested in? This sounds like a neat way to tidy things up a bit! There are quite a few things I’ve done in the past that I’d be inspired to create macros for:

  • Fake “tectonics” to create procedural but cohesive landmass and mountain range shapes
  • Rain shadow/Rainfall prediction
  • Biome prediction (based on rainfall, proximity to major rivers etc)
  • Population density prediction
  • A single node for multiple biome masks (e.g. from koppen climate classification)

I’m sure I’ll think of more once I’ve had a coffee!

Realistic proportions reference

I completely agree. I also hope to have a character that can test the terrain scale. And it should be possible to move directly on the terrain. This is a simple drawing I made. Basically, the user clicks the little person icon in the right toolbar, and an in-game third-person character is automatically generated at a certain position on the terrain, and the user can control his movement. Hahaha

Need help with Unreal Node. Can't set a color Mask. The /unreal node wants a heightfield as the first input.

You’ll want to do that first and any subsequent masks/colour drag and drop a wire onto the node, you’ll get a context menu to add it to the unreal node

Hope that helps

Need help with Unreal Node. Can't set a color Mask.

So long story short, Im trying to set everything up for export to unreal and this is the first time using the Gaea2unreal plugin. Everytime I try exporting my final color mask using the unreal node either it goes geometry chaos when choosing default or height field, or it gets completely grayed out when I use mask. How to solve this please?

Pushing Gaea 2 beyond realism: With 1 mountain, 5 different art styles. I’ve been experimenting with Gaea 2 to see how versatile the nodes are for non-photorealistic styles. I managed to create these 5 variants starting from the same base mountain (which I’ve made too).

I’m really glad by how the erosion and flow maps translate into stylized shapes with some simple trick, you can even use the colors to make really good stylized effect and more.

Realistic proportions reference
Klaus:

Well said Ty!
I still do this to visualize scale better, Custom scaled shape that you can bomb on top of the terrain to get a sense of scale. This here is a 30m wide and 10m tall cylinder. Human scale would be too small, but you can import familiar shapes or use basic shapes at different scales 10m, 50m, 100m for visualization. Height is easy as you can autolevel + clamp to input precise values but for width, I first used overlay + grid to roughly get the scale I want.

Thank you for your reply. Your method is excellent and very helpful. Creating a custom macro might simplify things, but it still requires calibration for different terrain sizes. I’d like a reference point with absolute height values that can accurately display a scale close to reality regardless of terrain size, thus optimizing this reference process. Currently, the software uses meters, and calculating scaling values confirms the map scale. However, I’d appreciate a more efficient way to accomplish this.

Realistic proportions reference Yes, your method is correct; I sometimes calculate it this way too. However, isn’t it possible to have a simpler and more efficient way, with a built-in character model or a cube (1m*1m) that doesn’t change or shrink when I modify the terrain size? Of course, this is just a small wish, and it depends on whether the official team has the time to implement this support.

Gaea tutorials wwithout files Partially I don’t want to make it a habit of sharing each file because it can lead to more questions than answers. People will try to just make the file work rather than actually understanding and learning the techniques used.

I create rather complicated node graphs, and I’d have to revisit/improve them because to someone who’s learning and didn’t create them it probably looks like a confusing mess haha.

The idea of more examples etc. has been discussed. might take some time to refine a few terrains into simpler versions for more examples.

Regarding this it’s mostly just a time management thing. I am 1 person. I need to research ways to create terrains, then record edit and upload tutorials, test SEO stuff, record, edit, upload documentation videos, create art for thumbnails, blogs, covers. So it will likely happen in the future when time allows for it. But for now documentation and content are the priorities.

To help maximise some usage If you’re learning I highly recommend further exploration based on it, think of it as lego just using blockas and filling your imagination and leveling you up too

Here i took all the keywords and references mentioned and spent 10/15mins coming up with my own idea from it for the terrain shape.

Gaea tutorials wwithout files The project itself?

or the file nodes?

  • In both cases one answer is the file node, it’s not licensed to just share ( megascans asset) you can just replace this with anything mind, or get the megascans asset, but if it were shipped without the file or a different one, then someone follwoing step by step woudl still be confused and just not understand.

  • Another could be for tutorials like this ( step mby step) some of the goals are to make a users step by step themselves to understand why and apply the ideas themselves ( a learning process)

  • Finally it may be something the team want to refine to add to the examples

There could be even more reasons but these are a few logical ones.

Realistic proportions reference @lumen @rabbithawk256

Your best best is what Klaus has said.

However just to help you both further understand contcepts:

Terrain Scale + Human Scale

To give you some perspecitive the video i have here is a human scale or 160cm tall and 1m wide in the default terrain scale as you can imagine, you just cant see it.
2026-03-18_12-48-50

Hill Scale + Human Scale

If you scale the terrain def down to 100x100m you can also add a 2x2m cube and the same 1.6m height which could represent a hill fairly well.

[!Tip]
If you are using terrain def relative scales, many nodes support metre values inputs as well as decimal or percentage

Tile Build Seams showing up regardless of blend percentage @TyXanders
My first yesterday “everything baked” test was perhaps too “complex”.
I tried again with a simpler you die one:
One single mountain node.
8K baked.
Build 16 K , 4 x 8K tiles with no hybrid subdiv.
Tiles are still not perfectly matching and if you zoom in (plausible scenario), you can see seams “issues”:

Kyrgyzstan Valley Terrains Hey there, for the Gaea 2 Starterguide I created a terrain that I wanted to share. I also took the time to create a very heavy but more realistic terrain. It covers extensive erosion, rock formations, and detailing. Plus a really complex texturing setup.

The terrains require you to draw a valley, and for the heavy file please bake the first half of the shaping once you get it to a place you like!

4 tiles build / 8 Height maps exported Hey @MarcSaunier

When you set up a node for export by default, you mark all of its output ports ( right side ports on nodes)

So in your Heigh Map named node it has the output ports

  • Out
  • Layers

it’ll build 4 tiles for each.

That’s confirmed on your screenshot.

You can configure what output ports you want to build and export in the 'lil configure icon left of each node name there.

[!TIP]
You can quickly mark just the main out by selecting Primary Only on nodes with lots of output ports.

Hope that helps!

I’ve already started working through the resources available, especially YouTube videos, but I learn best when I can ask questions and get guidance tailored to the specific workflows I’m trying to build.
