Leadership Secrets from Under the Sea

Written by Mike Oechsner

I first got exposed to scuba diving when I was 13 years old – at the Boy Scouts of America Jamboree 93. It may not really count because it was in a 4-feet deep pool. But it was a cool experience! When I was 18 and on my graduation trip with my grandparents – I got to do the real thing in Hawaii – and knew I was hooked! It wasn’t until over 15 years later that I actually went for my certification – and now I am a certified Open Water Diver, Nitrox Enriched Air certified diver, and Advanced certified diver.

Everyone is probably now wondering what in the world Scuba Diving and Leadership have to do with each other? You’d be a little surprised – they have a LOT to do with each other.

Just some of the Leadership Skills that get tested and used in diving include:

  • Non Verbal Communication
  • Preparation & Planning
  • Math
  • Adversity

Communication

When you are as much as 120 feet under the surface, somehow you have to be able to communicate with your dive buddy and anyone else you may be diving with. Diving communication is a universal language that works anywhere in the world – but – it’s always great to visit with everyone you’re going on a dive with before diving to make sure that nobody has their own special dialects.

Fun fact – giving someone a thumbs up does NOT mean “I’m having a great time – this is fun!” It actually means that, for some reason or another, I need to go up to the surface. To tell someone that you’re having a good time, it’s actually the “okay” symbol with your fingers. You also need to be able to communicate with your fellow divers about how much air you have left, how much time you have left at a depth, you need to be able to alert them to potential danger, and you may want to be able to point out something super cool (like a 9 foot turtle….well, hopefully they wouldn’t miss that).

Preparation and Planning

When going on a dive, there always has to be a plan. The moment you go under the water, you have a limited amount of air available to you. Depending on how deep the dive is, you also have a limited amount of time before you must come back to the surface. You have to plan your dive – depth, time, distance, and more. If you’re visiting a new dive site, there are ways to research the currents, depth, and more – or you can always choose to take a guided trip.

Math

I know – I’m old – because in my three years of high school accounting, I was classically trained with paper and pencil – double entry journal, general ledger accounts, and fully manual bookkeeping. Even nearly 25 years ago when I was learning – nobody kept books this way any longer. QuickBooks was a thing even way back then. But, by understanding how everything works in the background, I have a much more full concept of everything that accounting entails.

Much like accounting, I was classically trained in reading and understanding dive tables. The dive tables are some serious math where you calculate your dive depth, your dive time, how much time you must have on the surface before diving again, and how much impact all of the above will have on the length and depth of the next dive. I don’t think I’ve seen a single diver using dive tables in the last 5 years – everyone dives with a computer, and they are just a standard piece of equipment if you go on a guided dive, and most of us have our own. Just like accounting, I’m very excited that I learned the old way so that I can clearly understand the entire concept of diving safely.

Adversity

In my open water certification, part of the test dive was to have the instructor turn off my air at 15 feet of depth and for me to demonstrate that I could safely make it to the surface. Big deal? Didn’t feel like it at first – I have gone to the bottom of 14 foot pools since I was a kid. But, when you’ve been diving at 30, 45, 60, or more feet in depth – you cannot go up quickly, you have to carefully and slowly ascend to avoid compression sickness. Practicing this is important – but hopefully a skill that you never have to use in real life. Because of how air expands and contracts – you do, as a diver, have enough air to ascend from as much as 40 feet or more safely if you control your oxygen correctly. It’s a new experience! For advanced certification, I had to ascend from 30 feet without oxygen.

So many cool things!

Over the years, I’ve been able to experience multiple shark dives, I’ve held a squid, I’ve written on sea slugs, I’ve seen manta rays larger than me – but most importantly, I’ve been able to introduce at least ten of my friends into the excitement of scuba diving on different trips – and I’m always happy to introduce anyone else!

Tony Stark – The Pioneer

If you know the 5 Voices, you know one thing. Tony Stark is a Pioneer and there is no doubt about it. His approach to life with the “Anything is Possible!” mentality, his drive to sculpt the future he has imagined and his drive to win must have one you over from the get-go.

But it goes deeper than that. There is something else that makes Tony Stark, well, Tony Stark. Yes, his driving force is his strong performing character, as well as his drive and focus for the big picture goals, but deep down there is the drive for connection, and the futuristic vision to build and create.

Nurture, Nature, Choice

Within every personality, there are three things that shape who we are at our center. Nature, Nurture, and Choice. Nature is the foundation of how we were created. Nurture is how we were raised and how that affected us, and our Choice is how the choices that we have made have affected who we are.

When we look at Nature, Tony Stark was most likely born a Pioneer. It so happens that his father, Howard Stark was also a Pioneer, whether it was his first or second voice, and Howard enabled Tony by raising him in an environment of constant growth, constant connection, and constant learning. It makes sense that the Pioneer voice would only grow stronger from there, whether healthy or not.

Personal Growth

When we first meet Mr. Stark, we see him as the unhealthiest Pioneer. He was arrogant and he had a very “me focused” agenda. We also saw him deploy his weapons system often. For a Pioneer the weapons system is the grenade launcher. They don’t just shoot down ideas, the obliterate their target in record time. As a second voice connector there are multiple times that Tony Stark uses his powerful position to put together relationships for the future and stay connected with the people that will help him succeed.

Although Tony was a Pioneer first voice and a Connector second voice, he still was able to utilize the Connector’s Weapons System, Cyber Warfare many times over the years. Utilizing this he was able to disrupt the steadiness of the Avengers at times, as well as rally people together under a common belief especially if it was at the expense of others that considered themselves close to him, Captain America for example.

Although Tony could be a bit brash and outspoken at times, he still was the perfect leader to a great team, and he had the healthiest and most evident growth journey. For those that have seen movies in the Marvel universe, compare Tony Stark from the beginning in Iron Man, to the Tony Stark from Endgame. The growth that happened from beginning to end really exemplifies a Liberator. Part of what makes Tony’s character such a necessary piece of the Marvel universe is his growth journey. So, do you agree that Tony is a Pioneer?

All Work and No Play?
Ava Yeabower

We all feel the pressures in our stressful outcome-oriented society. It often feels like there’s not an allowance for play or free time that isn’t somehow “productive”. The classic proverb made famous by Stephen King’s The Shinning holds more truth than we may realize, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. Although haunting in King’s version, this proverb originally written in 1659 by an unknown author was meant to highlight that the lack of balance between work and relaxation would make a person seem stunted or dull from a holistic standpoint. Soccer icon David Beckham has said that he plays with Lego pieces to control stress. Talk-show host Jimmy Fallon plays inventive games with celebrity guests such as lip-synch battles or charades as a way of getting the guests to open up in a unique way. Actress Jessica Alba reportedly plays video games such as Pac-Man and Mario as an enjoyable outlet to relax.

I remember studying the importance of play for children in various psychology courses I took in college. Play is well-researched and documented in many studies for children, but now researchers are diving into the importance in play for adults. Psychiatrist Stuart Brown, founder of the National Institute for Play in Carmel Valley, California states, “Play has the power to deeply enrich your adult life, if you pay attention to it”.  Studies show that playtime for adults reduces stress, increases productivity, and improves cognitive health.

For example, can you remember the last time you played? If you’re unable to remember your last moment of play, you may be missing out on it’s many stress-reducing benefits. Brown states, “Play is a basic human need as essential to our well-being as sleep, so when we’re low on play, our minds and bodies notice,” Brown states. Over time, he urges, play deprivation can reveal itself in certain patterns of behavior: We might get cranky, rigid, feel stuck in a rut or feel victimized by life. To benefit most from the rejuvenating benefits of play, he says, we need to incorporate it into our everyday lives, “not just wait for that two-week vacation every year.” Play is proven to release endorphins that contribute to happiness and reduce our stress levels. Incorporating moments of play in our everyday lives is vastly important.

Furthermore, you may think that work and play don’t mix well, or that somehow play may hinder productivity; it’s quite the opposite. It’s been found that in work, play increases your productivity levels and makes you more inventive and creative. In fact, in their book “Welcome to Your Child’s Brain: How the Mind Grows from Conception to College” Dr. Sam Wang and Dr. Sandra Aamodt discuss how play contributes to successful problem solving, this extends beyond work into your personal life, too. “Work in adult life is often most effective when it resembles play. Indeed, total immersion in an activity often indicates that the activity is intensely enjoyable; this is the concept of flow, or what athletes call being in the zone,” they wrote. “Flow occurs during active experiences that require concentration but are also highly practiced, where the goals and boundaries are clear but leave room for creativity. This describes many adult hobbies, from skiing to music, as well as careers like surgery and computer programming.” Leaving room for creativity in all that we do could open the door to your next ground-breaking idea.

Lastly, play improves cognitive health that lowers your risk for age-related diseases like dementia. Play is also proven to ward off feelings of depression. Keeping the mind active in new ways reinforces neuropathway connections that keep our brains healthy and functioning. So what are you waiting for?

What counts as play?
Your play experience will be as unique to you as your coffee order; it’s different for everyone. Play is often considered as a state of mind or mental approach rather than a specific activity. If you’re not sure where to start in your personal life, just try setting aside a few minutes to do something you enjoy with a new playful mental attitude. Give yourself freedom within the activity to adopt a playful mindset. Try thinking back to when you were a child – what did you often enjoy doing? If arts and crafts was your go to, try picking up an adult coloring book and markers at the book store. If sports was your thing, perhaps set aside time for a game of fetch with a new toy with your dog or go for a jog and listen to your favorite band in your headphones. What feels like play to you may feel like torture for the next person, so feel free to explore what sparks joy within you and press into that and really make it your own.

At work, incorporating play may look like utilizing colorful pens and a notebook for brainstorming on the next big project. Perhaps decorate your desk with a vibrant sunset lamp or cool inspiring quote. Try starting your next meeting with a brain teaser or puzzle as an ice-breaker to reignite creativity and collaboration with you and your team. There is freedom in play, and the positive results are endless.

The metaphorical recess bell has rung, and “Here’s Johnny!” – so what are you waiting for, go play! You may be surprised the places you’ll go as a result.

We all have natural strengths and challenge is both work and life. We have those things that are empower us to be our best in both of those areas.

The 70:30 Principle helps us to determine the things that allow us to work in confidence and utilize our strengths and the things that aren’t in that category that we can work on over time.

When we work in our 70%, our strengths, we feel confident and energized as we go. The things in our 30% are the things that are more draining and not natural to us.

If you spend too much time in your 30% it could lead to burn out, falling into the pit of despair, and a loss of excitement for the tasks at hand.

On the other end, if we spend too much time in our 70% we feel energized, yes, but we aren’t feeling challenged or equipped to grow. We become abdicators to ourselves.

The overall goal is to spend 70% of our time in our healthy areas, and 30% of our time in the areas that aren’t our strengths. Slowly they will start to become those strengths. A healthy Mindset means knowing what is in your 70% and what is in your 30% and how to balance those well.

Personally, I always struggle with working within my 30%. I choose to make my give all my energy to my 70% but I never find any growth. When you are great at running a mile but you always just run a mile, you never build endurance. Yes, you may be the best mile runner ever but that is the only skill you will ever grow in. If you don’t push yourself to spend 30% of your time in the things that don’t come natural to you, you will never grow.

Your 30% can look like little things. I am incredibly bad at mopping. Sweeping my floors and even vacuuming are easy to me, but mopping my floors are not. It is something that I have to do though to keep a clean and tidy home but it is one of my least favorite things to do.

Even with work, school, or homelife. There is always going to be something that you aren’t excited to do, and it isn’t necessarily in your wheelhouse, but you still have to in order to advance in school, work, or homelife.

It isn’t easy, but if you work hard enough those things that are in your 30% bracket can turn into your 70%.

I – Intentional

Have you ever wondered where the day went? You look up and suddenly it is evening, and the day has seemingly disappeared. How does that happen? Where does time go? Habits are the most difficult to form and the easiest to break, but they are necessary for you to command your day and make sure that you have gotten the most out of it that you possibly can.

So, what are habits? More importantly, what are habits that allow you to optimize your time and complete your goals? Anyone can take command of their day and master their habits. Maybe it is stepping out of the usual routine for a second, or a change of scenery. Let’s explore what the letters of H.A.B.I.T.S stand for.

The letter “I” stands for “Intentional”

* * *

What does it mean to be intentional?

What about being accidental?

In your own life can you tell the difference?

A lot of us function accidentally in our lives. We accidentally wake up later than normal, and accidentally watch Netflix for 5 hours and wonder where time has gone. We accidentally eat junk food instead of well-rounded meals, or we accidentally didn’t go on the run that we told ourselves that we would go on.

There are so many things in life that can cause distraction and help promote accidental living over intentional living. Being Intentional means setting aside time to be productive. Your intentional day will look very different than a friend’s, a significant other’s, or a coworker’s intentional day will look like but experimenting to find what works best for you to get what you need to get done through the week.

To be intentional means that you have to put forward the effort to carve out that time in order to complete the tasks ahead of you. This is something that you are capable of. Once you get set in a very accidental mindset it can seem hard to get out of. Be intentional about make space so that good habits have time and space to cultivate.

Effective tools gain you influence in both work and life and knowingly practicing them helps you to be an effective leader in your community. We all strive to be great leaders and to work under great leaders. Growing influence is easier than one might think!

B- Burning and Beyond

The letter “B” stands for “Burning and Beyond”

Great leaders are great at being able to adjust on the fly. Flexibility is key in every work environment. Information changes, availability changes, circumstance changes, and adaptability is one of the greatest strengths a leader can have.

If you as a leader develop a “filter” to decide in the moment what choices to make with all the information coming in and having the ability to pivot from one choice to the other, it can be one of your greatest strengths. Nothing is set in stone until a project is finished. Until a bright red bow is tied around a finished project, you, as a leader need to be flexible and open to adjust.

Use your “filter” to filter the information coming in to make the right decision for those you are working with and the project you are working on. When new information comes in, filter it between “burning” and “beyond”. Is this a “burning” situation? Is it a situation that if it isn’t handled right now in this moment, today, it is going to burn the house down? Is it going to keep you from reaching your goal? If it is that situation, it is one that needs to be dealt with asap in order to keep your work running effectively.

If information comes in that is not immediately needed to be dealt with, you can filter it into “beyond”. It is something that will need to be handled eventually, but for the time being it is not going to greatly affect the project you are working on today.

Understanding what information coming in is most important and least important will reduce stress over a project in ways you could not even imagine. It not only reduces stress, but it makes you a more effective leader and worker.

Effective tools gain you influence in both work and life and knowingly practicing them helps you to be an effective leader in your community. We all strive to be great leaders and to work under great leaders. Growing influence is easier than one might think!

The Pit of Despair

by: Addison Kubicek

When we hire someone new, or train people in a new skill, everyone goes through a growth journey. At some point along the way, when they’re learning to master their new skill or environment, there is a period where they’re in danger of falling into the Pit of Despair.

So what is the Pit of Despair?

This is the place where they feel like no matter how hard they’ve tried, they just can’t make it, they don’t understand the expectations set for them, or they feel in-over-their head and overwhelmed. The result can be abdication, or depression, or unhealthy behavior at work as they seek to cope with this sense of failure and feeling trapped.

We all can remember a moment such as this, where we have also felt incompetent in a position, we were in. Maybe we felt a lull in work, or we messed up and thought there was no recovering from it. There so many different feelings that come with it, but no matter the situation, we all have a chance of falling in the Pit of Despair, and we all have fallen in at one point or another.

This is a place that feels like a dead end. The person stuck in the pit of despair feels in-over-their-head, overwhelmed, tired of trying, and depressed. Support and challenge go out the window, and there is seemingly no light at the end of the tunnel. It is like the person in the pit can see the ladder, but not the rungs, and have resigned themselves to the idea that this is just how it is going to be.

There is hope! There is a way out. The leader is the ladder out of the Pit of Despair. While it may be tempting to criticize the people in the Pit of Despair because “they just didn’t have what it takes” or any other frustration about why you think they’re down there, what they really need is you. They need Time, Vision, and Encouragement. Drop any criticism that may come when you see someone in the Pit of Despair, because we all have been there at one time or another, and it is your job to liberate.

Not everyone learns at the same pace, so what may take a week for one person to figure out takes a month for another. It builds hard skills and it also builds trust. Formal time is necessary for developing hard skills, but Informal time is crucial for building trust. That could look like intentional training or inviting them to dinner.

Vision means that there is short term vision to help them see what is immediately ahead of them. It is like focusing on each rung of the ladder as they climb out of the pit. Focus on the next project, focus on the due date, or focus on the end of the day. As you focus on the short-term vision, it is easier to work, learn, and lead because it is a change of pace. Long term vision is helping the person see what is to come and building excitement for it. Look at the projects in the future, or the company dinner that is planned. If there is purpose behind the work, it will continue to grow the excitement for the future.

Finally, your encouragement needs to be genuine, authentic, and specific. If you know of someone who is in the pit of despair, help them by being a leader and using these three tools to help them get out of the pit and grow into the person they can be. If you are in the pit, be honest with someone around you, and allow them to help you with these three tools so that you can be the best version of yourself.

Remember, we all have hit our Pit of Despair moments before. It doesn’t mean that you aren’t cut out for your job, or that your coworker isn’t cut out for their job. It simply means that you need to liberate yourself and those around you. You can do it! You can climb that ladder and help others to see the rungs as well!

A- Ask for Help

The letter “A” stands for “Ask for Help”

As a leader, it might seem that you always need to have all of the answers. That is not true. The reality is that you need to ask for help just as much as everyone else and asking for help is not bad. You cannot know everything and it perfectly okay to go ask others for answers to questions that you cannot answer on your own.

It goes both ways, sometimes you know more about a topic, a project, or simply you just have the answer to a question that someone is looking for. Do not be afraid to ask questions. It is something that each of us struggle with, but something to grow and learn in. Give grace to yourself when you go ask for questions and give grace to others as they come to you.

As a leader you must learn to delegate. To delegate means to give work to another person that you might not have the time, energy, or knowledge to complete on your own. That is what makes you a good leader. Not a soft leader, or an unknowledgeable leader, but someone that is trustworthy and effective.

Bringing people into your team and your projects makes your team more effective. You will not be looked down on for asking questions, instead you will gain influence within your team and the people you work with because you will be gaining knowledge and incite to make your work more effective.

Effective tools gain you influence in both work and life and knowingly practicing them helps you to be an effective leader in your community. We all strive to be great leaders and to work under great leaders. Growing influence is easier than one might think!

Support and Challenge

We all have little voices in our heads that help us to dictate what decisions we make, how we time manage, talk to people, and so many other things. We refer to this as our “Conscious.” Most of us know the iconic devil on one shoulder and angel on the other that is depicted in most cartoons that we all have grown up with.

The principle of Support/Challenge itself is very similar to the cartoons sitting on shoulders. Support is exactly as it sounds. Support is support. It is encouragement that you give yourself, whether it is how you look, what you said, how hard you work. What causes you to support yourself? The better question yet, do you support yourself at all?

No matter your answer to that last question, think back to a time in your life when someone provided encouragement after you completed a task. How did that make you feel? I think most of us can agree that receiving a kind word or a bit of encouragement helps to make you feel empowered. Well, the first step in feeling empowered is supporting ourselves.

A lot of the time we tend to listen to that critical voice in our heads. It ends up being one of the biggest factors in determining our self-worth and what we bring to the world. We allow that voice to be the judge of who we are. That voice is the voice of Challenge that we hear.

Challenge is good until it isn’t. If challenge is an unmatched voice that dictates who you are, how you work, and so on and so forth, you will not succeed. Apologies for the frankness, but challenge alone is not something that we can survive off of as human beings. There is a need for balance. In order for Challenge to be healthy, it needs to be paired with support.

Personally, I have never been amazing at supporting myself. I always listen to my critical voice because I always believe that the challenge I bring myself helps me to become the best version of myself. This is true to an extent, but like most things balance is key. If I do not provide support for myself alongside the challenge then it is as if the scale is too heavy on one side than the other. I dominate myself and that branches into dominating those around me. Providing the right amount of support and challenge is what Liberates.

You wouldn’t go to your coworker and address the giant pimple on their forehead before complimenting their outfit. That is exactly what we do each day. We wake up and immediately the self-critique starts to flow. I challenge you to bring support first thing. It is something I have to consciously do each day as I go through the day. I sit at work and congratulate myself on a job well done before I ever bring the critique.

That is the beginning of growth. You wouldn’t listen to the cartoon devil on your right shoulder and forget about the angel on the left. Don’t let challenge be the only voice in your head. Support is about balance. You are capable, you are worthy, and you are strong. Critique helps us become a better version of ourselves, but support helps us believe that we will become that version!

H- Have To’s Want To’s

The Letter “H” Stands for Have To’s Want To’s.

If you are a driven person, there are many ways that you organize your time and the tasks for your day. That may look like a to-do list, or an organized flow of tasks that need to be completed. You look at the things that need to be done that week, that month, and that year and evaluate what you need to do to succeed at these things.

When you look at your to-do list, think about “have to’s” and “want to’s”. What is the most important thing that needs to get done first, and what is another project that you are very excited to work on? Focus on both. Understand that important projects and tasks are important for a reason.

Don’t let those “have to” projects overtake your time. Life is about balance so sprinkle in the “want to” projects into your list. The “want to” projects are the things that you have wanted to do for the longest time. It is the projects that allow you to stretch your strengths in new areas or gives you that little dash of creativity within the day.

Balance is key especially with projects. When you make your to-do list, sprinkle some “want to” tasks in among the “have to’s”. When you do that, it will give you the fuel and energy to complete that list. As a driven and creative leader, who knows what you will create when you have the energy and the time to complete what you have to do and what you want to do!

Effective tools gain you influence in both work and life and knowingly practicing them helps you to be an effective leader in your community. We all strive to be great leaders and to work under great leaders. Growing influence is easier than one might think!
