The Olympics ranks countries solely by gold medals, the New York Times treats gold, silver, and bronze medals equally. We use a different methodology.

1st place is 1 point and we halve from there: 2nd place is 0.5, 3rd is 0.25. This ensures greater weight is placed on better performances without dismissing 2nd and 3rd place finishes.
