Hi Toby

Like you I am a massive Doctor Who fan and would love to see missing episodes of the programme, as well as the first series of The Avengers and many others recovered.

Unlike you, I am a solicitor.  Your comments in Martin Belam’s Guardian article last Friday about film collections being thrown out in house clearances made me think that a bit of publicity via the legal press could be a good idea. Quite often it is a solicitor who is organising the house clearance, either as executor of an estate or on behalf of bereaved family members.

Would it be an idea for someone who has knowledge of this to write an article for the Law Society Gazette or to contact the Society of Trust and Estate Practioners (STEP) so that lawyers know that the cans of film are worth passing on to the experts?

Regards
Greg Randall

I remember your friend Mark too, and the pub quizzes!

Have been living in a town 60 miles west of Seattle USA for many years now, but always miss Manchester. Still have the same human issues that I had in Manchester, but experience them in a different country! You can run but you can’t hide…..

No pub quizzes nowadays, but plenty of ducks and chickens to look after and be entertained by.

I’m glad you’re doing well, Toby. I really enjoy your website.

Debbie

Debbie! Of course I rememeber you both. We used to do the pub quiz and I rememeber you once letting us – my friend Mark and I – have your winnings (crate of beer) when we were short of booze.
I really hope you’re well and thanks for the message. I was very moved to read it and found your final comment heartening and touching. Thanks so much for taking the trouble to post such kind words x

We all drank way too much back then.

I also remember waking in the early hours panicking about whether I’d made a dick of myself the night before due to alcohol. Possibly less of an issue compared to other problems caused by drinking!

Take care, Toby. I always think of you as funny, intelligent and above all, kind.

Someone directed me to your content after I’d watched your recent In Memoriam 2024 video. I’ve been watching Classic Who for the first time since it went up on iPlayer last year and I have recently made it to the Third Doctor, so I thought I’d check if you had anything about my favourite Third Doctor story so far: Ambassadors (Kapow!) of Death. Turns out you very much did, and I had a fantastic time! I thoroughly enjoyed listening to your commentary and even when you were talking about Taltalian’s accent over one of my favourite Doctor/Cornish scenes you even said “I’m talking over bits, aren’t I” and briefly overviewed the scenes that had passed since

I particularly enjoyed listening to you fall in love with Ronald Allen because I too was absolutely won over by his performance which I would describe as meticulous, charismatic and distinctive, and if I was choosing an overall favourite thing it’d be him. I’d been struggling a bit in with the lack of both spacetime travel and a well-bonded TARDIS team, but something about Cornish’s character and Allen’s portrayal helped massively with settling into this story and S7 as a whole. It was really pleasurable to listen to someone celebrate a performance and story I’m so passionate about so thank you for dedicating so much time and energy to your commentary and discussion

I’ve started on your podcast Too Much Information now and I think I may be in heaven Having to be more selective about Happy Times and Places because there’s obviously lots of Classics stories I’ve not got up to yet (currently on Curse of Peladon which is SO FUN so far), but planning to listen to Evil of the Daleks soon!

All the best,
Jasper

Thank you for your absolutely WONDERFUL ‘Happy Times and Places’. I’ve had a difficult time finding a Doctor Who podcast that I can really enjoy and binge on. So happy to have discovered yours! Keep up the great work, my friend!

Comment on Pat Gorman – Who’s “That Guy” by Andy Kelly https://tobyhadoke.com/pat-gorman-whos-that-guy/#comment-19324 Wed, 25 Dec 2024 18:04:01 +0000 https://tobyhadoke.com/?p=2674#comment-19324 My dad knew Pat (not sure how) and our TV viewing in the 70s & 80s was spent watching out for him. We’d never seen him in any speaking roles and eagerly anticipated hearing him scream when he was due to be killed by a triffid in The Day of the Triffids. However, his death passed without even a whimper!
The only time I heard him speak was on It’ll Be Alright On The Night. He played a policeman in a sketch with Little & Large. He had one line that he just couldn’t get right and it required about 10 takes, all of which were shown.
RIP Pat.
