Tornado is an integrated development environment and tool suite from Wind River Systems, Inc., designed for creating, debugging, and optimizing embedded applications that run on the VxWorks real-time operating system. It combines cross-compilation toolchains (including support for Diab and GNU compilers), project and build management, system configuration, and a target-aware, source-level debugger with kernel and task visibility. Through a host-side target server and an on-target agent, developers can connect to hardware over Ethernet or serial links to inspect memory and registers, control threads, and analyze synchronization and interrupt behavior in real time. Tornado also includes performance and event-tracing utilities, such as WindView, to visualize timing, resource usage, and system interactions.
Supporting a wide range of processor architectures—including PowerPC, ARM, MIPS, and x86—and available on mainstream host operating systems, Tornado became a staple for embedded development in aerospace, defense, networking, and industrial markets during the late 1990s and early 2000s. It has since been succeeded by Wind River Workbench, but remains important for teams maintaining and upgrading legacy VxWorks-based systems.
