New version of Click to Chat (V 5.3) + new variant: Click to Chat [ads]

This is a minor update. Originally it was just to add the missing italian translation in the donation version (where I did have the permissions since a few years ago...but never noticed until one user asked why it wasn't available!)

The new variant IS a notable new thing, and I think I should explain a few things.

First of all: the normal variant will NEVER have ads. This new variant is the one with them, so if you do want to see ads you will need to 'opt in' explicitly (by installing this new version I mean).

So, about this new variant. I published it for two main reasons:

- First: If there are users that do want to support me but do not want to pay, they now have an option to see ads. Honestly I'm not sure why, but the option is there (and I do have maybe too many options...even if donations are almost nonexistent, thank goodness I don't need the money).
- Second: for bad actors. I don't have a strong confirmation, but I do have very good reasons to suspect that my app is being cloned and/or used by some people with bad intentions. They will use whatever versions are available, so I'm sure they will use this one too.

In the end, I see this as some sort of experiment. In case you didn't know, I was banned from admob/adsense 7 years ago I never knew the reason (of course, they never say) but I suspect it was something to do with invalid traffic. In the middle of summer I received an email about some changes to my adsense account, which I marked as spam (I still though my account was banned). A month or so ago I did tested admob for a different reason, and I was shocked to discover that my account was deleted or something like that, and I could create a new one. To be honest I've though about a version with ads in the past, but I couldn't do it due to the banning. So when this happened, I just knew I had to try.

Still, and as I've already said, I would NEVER add ads to the normal app version (even if I've received pressure to do so). And let me say, I'm doing this out of my own principles, even if it could be really easy to change that and start earning lots of money (the app does have almost 2 million users daily...).

Honestly, I could go on and say lots of different reasons, but in the end I just do this because I want to be able to look over some developers's shoulders, those that sell themselves for money, and no matter what I say, the only way to do that is to actually don't do it. And so I won't.

This update does not include any notable feature or improvement, but there are some changes under the hood that I had to make before continuing with the development, related to the translations. Finally that first part is done...but there is still a second thing to do.

I think this version has some bug, the logic is becoming pretty convoluted and it's difficult to think of all the possible interactions. Will be kept as beta for a week minimum.

There are some changes to the 'default prefix and message' functionality, but the probably most notable one is the consistent icons and colors. Now the donation version will use the device color (instead of that yellow) except on the icon. I may port that change to the normal version (or rather remove the green color, as now the device color is the default but the normal version overrides it) but for now I prefer the donation version to have a notable cosmetic feature.

Just in case: the only difference between the donation and the normal version is the app color (and the removal of the 'please donate' message). There are absolutely no differences in functionality, and they will never be.

New version of 'isUserAMonkey & isUserAGoat' -> 'AndroidSDK easter egg showcase' (V 2.0)

Motivation is a strange thing. Just one single comment was enough for wanting to update this 'experiment'.

Previously only the isUserAMonkey and isUserAGoat were present. I made this just because I found it funny, and didn't took me too long. I was aware of other easter eggs, but those two were 'just enough'.

If I was going to add a third one...why not 10 more?

So, yeah, the app was fully updated. There are now 13 easter eggs in total (all I could find) which go from simple constants to actions that require a custom service. Everything is explained and testeable, that's why I also renamed the app to 'showcase'. The icon was updated too!

And even so, I reduced the app requirement to (almost) android 1! Why? Just because.

Up until now the app have been downloaded a total of 859 (on Play Store, no idea about f-droid) so not a very popular app...but I like it, and if someone somewhere found it useful (and there are a couple positive reviews) then I'll find it a success.

This includes the third, and last, voted feature. The VirusTotal v3 integration. Probably not very user-visible, unless you want to check the result of a scan, but still something that had to be done.

The other 'notable' feature is the ability to include arguments on automations. Currently just the package/component for open (plus the toast debug sample), but I want to add some more to others.

Other minor features and a couple fixes...and that's it!

I know I've been more absent lately, and probably I'll be even more in the future, but I still love doing this and will continue while I can, whenever I can.

This version includes the second voted feature: an enhanced JSON editor!
It replaces the old dialog-popup with a new full activity, where you can check the documentation while editing (or hide it completely) as well better restore/clear checks.

It contains also a new pattern (which you may need to import manually if you have edited them, sorry) and a fix for rejected urls, which was mostly present when trying to download files from github releases.

Additionally, although not present in the changelog itself, the app is now available on IzzyOnDroid! You can also import it with Obtainium (instruction on github) since the apks are also published on github itself (not sure if I mentioned that in the past... well I'm mentioning it now!). Thanks to PabloOQ for those!

URLCheck has now over 1000 stars on Github

Just as the title says, the URLCheck repository on Github had surpassed the 1000 stars limit!

It may or may not be a big achievement, but still I think it's something worth publishing. At least for me it's incredible!

Unfortunately, right now I don't have any new big update planned for the app. But the previous one introduced automations, which I think classifies for it (even if probably that feature helped getting those extra final stars :P ).

In any case, there are still new versions planned, that I'll continue to release from time to time, with new features and improvements.

Version 3.0...this is in fact a big update, even if the main feature it adds is still very basic.

Presenting: Automation!

This new feature will allow you to perform actions automatically based on predefined inputs. As a first version only basic triggers will be available (when an url matches a regex) and basic actions (basically pressing the ui buttons) but I plan to add more complex triggers and actions in the future (someday!).

With the basic current version you can now, for example, react to urls that match a given regex, and then open automatically the preferred app, or trigger a virus total analysis, or enable incognito, among a few others. Think of this like the regex setting in the status check module (which will be automatically migrated to an automation entry).

This feature was the vote winner, a vote that I setup on Github a couple weeks ago...and I didn't totally forgot to publish here on the blog until writing this...oops (sorry!)

Hopefully this will make some people very happy, even if the setup is a bit complex (requires json).

There are also a couple other improvements, but the only noticeable one is the new popup for the text module edit mode, as with the automation it was very difficult to either trigger everything while writing, after a couple seconds of pause, when losing focus, magically adding an 'apply' button... The popup allows to better edit the url on my opinion anyway (less crowded).

Just a quick update of my two jetbrain plugins. CollapseClosingTags and MavenDependencyCollapse.

Basically to fix a deprecation error that was shown almost each time you right clicked an xml file.

I also remove the plugin template code, since it was too complex and too many things that I just wasn't using. Now it's the plain new project sample from Intellij itself, with the custom code.

I did kept the changelog plugin though, it was the only easy way I found to sync the plugins descriptions between the readme and the plugin itself.

- Internal code migrated to Kotlin

This update does not contains any change visible to the user, but internally the whole codebase was migrated from Java to Kotlin.

I love Kotlin, but until now using kotlin always increased the app size by a crazy amount (at least the apk). Last time I tested it, however the size increase was minimal (it did increase, but similar to the increase of adding a new asset).

I'm going to take this opportunity to test the java->kotlin migration in a real-world scenario. This update will be available only as the beta of the normal (not donation) version. And it will stay there for a couple weeks. Once I'm sure it is as usable as the java one, I'll upload it as stable (only the normal, not donation) and carefully monitor the usage, crashes and real size.

This will tell me once and for all if Kotlin is now a good replacement for small apps, or if it's just a java syntax-sugar with a crazy overhead.

I'll try to post my findings.

Findings: The size increases, but it is almost unnoticeable (signed full apk: 200Kb->242Kb). It seems that the trick is to target java 21...hmm 🤔 Fine for me!

There is only one new feature, but it's not a minor one, and it took me several years of planning, and a couple months of implementation:

Now you can backup/restore the app data.

Yes, that's right, that feature is finally here. This should hopefully allow people to keep a copy for preservation, allow to migrate data between devices, or even switch from different releases (like migrate from play store to fdroid).

The functionality is quite straightforward, but I managed to add a couple toggles to choose which data to backup/restore. The error management is a bit lacking unfortunately, I want to improve it in the future but for now I'll just wait in case bugs are reported.

The downside is that the backup required a functionality only available on a newer api version (for Android 4.4) and I decided to remove support for older versions (4.0.1 - 4.3). Considering that android 4.3 was released on early 2013 (more than 10 years ago), it's reported to run in less than 0.3% of available devices and most (if not all) of apps require android 5.0 at best (usually 8.0), I think it's fair.
Note: I don't like removing support for older devices, but in this case adding custom code to allow using that version required to include almost a full file picker implementation. I'm not using the app-compat library, not even sure if it will help though. If you are still using that version for some reason, you can still use the previous version without issue.

You still here? I'll tell you a (not very) secret then: the backup file is just a zip! And the contents are mostly txt files! You can open it and check how the data is saved, or even modify and see what happens! (remember to keep a backup just in case...which now you can!)

I almost forgot.

So yeah, this is an app that I made a long time ago, and that I had to stop developing because it required a permission that (I though) was no longer possible to obtain.

In order to get the data usage, originally you had to use a method that required the phone id. Getting that id required a phone permission, and that permission was not granted anymore for apps targeting Android 10 and up. The deprecation notice said to use an alternative, but I was never able to make it work. So I just kept the app at that working version, and never updated it.

Fast-forward a couple years, and I discovered that you could use the alternative, but only if you allowed ONLY android 10 and up, which meant that, by updating the app, existing phones could no longer use it (original: 7-9, new 10+). So I just kept avoiding updates.

Fast-forward a couple more years, I have now a new Android 12 phone, and Android 8 is now considered 'old'. So I implemented the change (which allowed me to remove the phone permission), and a couple others I always wanted to make (this is an app mainly for myself after all). Play Store is no longer displaying apps targeting versions older than 10, so this was perfectly the best moment to do so.

Hope it's help useful for someone, it was for me.
