Twin CitiesTenants
Tenant Union
In January 2026, members of Inquilinxs Unidxs por Justicia (Renters United for Justice), South Minneapolis Tenant Union, and tenant associations across Minneapolis and St. Paul launched Twin Cities Tenants, the cities-wide tenant union. Our theory was simple: we fought to keep our neighbors here, now we need to fight to keep them in their homes.
In February, we ran a historic rent strike drive to create as much economic leverage as possible to protect ourselves and our neighbors from the looming rent and eviction crisis. On February 28, we voted AGAINST authorizing the strike.
We committed to organizing tenants who were truly prepared to withhold rent to win our demands. We did that, but we don’t have the numbers we need to exercise maximum power – yet. The vote was a practice of strategic discernment, coming out of serious risk assessment, and with a commitment to continue organizing towards the world we need. We will not stop building our power.
