This is the second in-progress release of it, which I've debuted at the SMWCentral Creativity Convention (C3) this year. And let me tell you, the experience has been a bit of a doozy.

What's this about a hack?
東方大跳躍 ~ Summoned Monsters of Whimsy (henceforth referred to as "THSMW") stars Reimu Hakurei (thanks to the lovingly done sprite by japanese artist Kusamochi/Midocake) going through levels inspired by the locations in the Touhou series and... other things. There's a goofy plot that boils down to "Goombas and Koopas have shown up in Gensokyo and various factions try to take advantage of that". The game is also heavenly referential, with stages inspired by all sorts of other things I like. It also makes use of the MSU-1 fantasy enhancement chip by byuu/near.

You can go to this page for more information and a download link. But in this post, I'd like to talk a bit about development and about the reactions people had to the game.

Like I said before, the hack has been in development since 2019, which is an awful long time (though not unusual for a project like this). I've been at it on and off, which helps explain the delay. But working on this has given me a lot of insight on game development and even taught me way more about 65816 Assembly than I thought I ever would know. In particular, the decision to use MSU-1 has presented some unique challenges. Originally my reasoning for it was that I didn't want this hack to have the same songs most other SMW hacks had, so the ability to use basically any music I wanted was an opportunity for more unusual picks. But of course, it opened up the possibility to have things like voice acting! Though actually finding people who were willing and able to do it took me a long time... Shoutouts to Rinny-tan and Maiyatsumi. But it also meant I had to be wary of ballooning download sizes, compatibility issues, and the fact I couldn't get MSU-1 and SA-1 working at the same time, essentially making my ROM slower, smaller, and more likely to hit a limit for sprites onscreen. Not sure I'd do it again, haha.

Fun fact: originally this game was going to star Sumireko! There was a custom powerups patch at SMWCentral at the time, and I intended to take advantage of it by giving Sumireko a bunch of costumes based on other Touhou characters. But there were some bugs with it I was not happy about, and so I opted for a simpler approach. I also considered having Marisa as the player 2 character, but that also presented problems - eventually I realized all my custom code wasn't working on all three save files, so I nuked the other two and removed the ability to play this game with 2 players. But then I found myself drawn to the idea of unlockable costumes, and that's a big part of the appeal of making this game for me! I don't know how many costumes will be available in the final game - that will depend on how much room I have left on the cart (I only have 4MB to work with!).

The old Sumireko sprites I've made. In hindsight, I like what I went with better.

The praise I've heard the most from people about this hack is just how much the game surprises people at every turn. There's a lot of custom code going into this, prompting comments like "Is this even Super Mario anymore?" - mostly in the form of levels that change the gameplay formula a bit... or a lot. Perhaps the highlight of Demo 2 is Higan, a three-part series of stages that parody Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, down to the gameplay. Credit where credit is due: I got the idea for something like this from seeing a video on the Fire Emblem hack "The Hack Whose Name Was Stolen" by Sme - which was shown off at FEE3 2020 and had a chapter that... does exactly the same thing as my hack does, and just adds an Ace Attorney-style trial in the middle of an otherwise unrelated game. I saw it and decided I could probably make it work in SMW. And I think the results speak for themselves!
Curiously, in the meantime, a hack of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time titled Hero of Law was released, that also turns the game into an Ace Attorney parody (although it's a standalone thing). Something something nickels. Sadly though, the aforementioned Fire Emblem hack has had the Ace Attorney chapter spun off into its own project, and I don't know if it or the game it was originally a part of ever came out...

In all honesty, though, Higan itself was a lot of work. It took two people to write the script, and a lot of tedious timing to port it over to the engine. And there's still some visual artifacts I'm not happy with. Mainly I was worried whether this would be a welcome addition, since you expect a Mario game to be, y'know, a platformer. I tried my best to ensure the courtroom drama didn't overstay its welcome, and even some of the people who are the most critical of ROM hacks that divert from standard Mario play (looking at you, Quarium) seemed to enjoy it, so that's a bit of a relief. I was also concerned with how well people can follow the logic of the mystery, especially if they don't know anything about Touhou - I didn't want the solution to the case to hinge on knowledge of the series not everyone playing will have. Essentially, I needed to make sure all the facts were presented in-game so people could arrive at the solution themselves. And from my testing, it seems everyone gets there eventually! Even if some of them find out who the culprit is sooner than others. So that's another relief.

Fun fact: A lot of the character poses in Higan are deliberate callbacks to iconic Ace Attorney sprites. I'm sure eagle-eyed players caught them all.

The Moriya Shrine levels were another source of headaches. These are inspired by Metal Gear Solid, complete with its own "stealth mechanics", by taking advantage of Super Mario's World sleeping fish enemy, the Rip Van Fish. The premise is simple: If the Rip Van Fish wake up, the alert is triggered, and Bullet Bills spawn from offscreen. Once they're either back to sleep or defeated, the alert timer begins to tick down. The problem is that what makes Rip Van Fish wake up is not entirely clear even to me. Sometimes touching a nearby wall will wake one up. Sometimes simply being aligned vertically with an offscreen Rip Van Fish will also trigger the alert. It's actually really annoying, and honestly my fault for trying to use them in a way the game never intended. But I decided to keep the punishment for being spotted light - there's not really a reason to go for a no-alert run of those stages or anything like that.
The idea of paroying MGS with Touhou is actually something that's been in the back of my mind since I first became a fan of the latter - as a search for "series:metal_gear series:touhou" in my personal art gallery can attest.
That's a fangame I'd make in a heartbeat if I had the chance. Particularly, I'm interested in presenting Reimu and Sanae in a sort of Solid Snake/Liquid Snake role. Which is exactly what I do in the hack as well (since I figured, a full fangame might be something of a pipe dream). Perhaps less obvious is the idea of Suwako being in a sort of Revolver Ocelot role, where you don't know her true allegiance and she seemingly is more interested in causing mayhem than anything else. I was actually originally going to have the first Moriya Shrine stage end in a quick-draw duel between Reimu and Suwako, referencing Ocelot's fight in MGS3, but uhh... I had trouble coding that.

Unused artwork for a Suwako pre-boss cutscene. "Two rings. More than enough to kill anything that moves."

Lastly, preparing this game for people to play was a third source of frustration that endured several days after C3. Turns out, there's some issues that arise depending on whether you create a patch using a ROM with or without a header. And on what kind of compression you use when zipping a file. Not to mention the MSU-1 patch I was using had some issues on newer versions of the FXPAK Pro, and it took me some research to figure out what to do about it. But I do believe all the kinks have been ironed out, and the game is in a stable state now. We'll see if my foot ends up in my mouth in the coming days (if this post gets an edit, you'll know it did).
Overall, though, I cannot complain about the reception to this game at all. It's actually far surpassed my expectations. I must admit I was wary of sharing the hack in SMWCentral itself, due to the fact that, as hack enthusiasts, people there probably have higher standards than most about people's creations in this space. And, in a more personal case, I'd seen that the opinion of users in regards to MSU-1 use in hacks was overall kind of negative? Which I totally get - music ports are a big part of the site's culture and the identity of SMW hacks, and it would be a shame if MSU-1 replaced that as the standard for audio in them. But I suppose enough time has passed and this hasn't actually happened, so people may have mellowed out on the whole concept.
Funny enough, the only MSU-1 enabled hack that I was aware of at the time I started working on this project was a game called, uh... Super Mario Odyssey. This was developed by Rachael Mae, probably best known as one half of the duo behind The Cutting Room Floor. And also a vtuber! Among other things. Small world, huh? Unfortunately, I don't think SMO ever got anything past a demo... which is of course, a very common fate to a lot of fan projects. I'm trying really hard to make sure it doesn't happen to this game though!

But I digress. My point is that I'm really happy with the reception so far. I was hoping to take a break from hacking to focus on my main project (Y'know... BELOW HEAVEN...) but I'm kinda itching to just keep working on this thing. Part of me wants it out of the way so it doesn't compete with my other works for attention, especially with how long it's been... and part of it is just genuinely excited to get my other ideas out there. I promise there won't be anything nearly as complex or time-consuming as an entire adventure game inside a platformer, though!

Y'know, maybe I should share some of the sprites I've made for this game... but that's for another post.
2026-01-30T03:00:00Z https://udomyon.com/blog/caromods/
January 30, 2026

Yes I deliberately made the post title sound like an episode title for an old anime. Anyway, a while back I wound up (through a somewhat contrived scenario) commissioning someone to mod the protagonist of my upcoming game into Super Mario 64 Coop Deluxe. After adding some stuff to the mod on my own, it's finally fit to release. Buuuuut I also figured I could make a blog post here listing all the games I put Caroline in, with download links for each.

Super Mario 64 Coop Deluxe

If you don't know, this is a custom build of the Super Mario 64 PC port which allows for online multiplayer, and has a very modular setup for mod support. Both the original game and ROM hacks are compatible with it. The Caroline mod itself was done by Violet, who's done multiple popular mods for this game and also takes commissions. I added some things on my own, such as some tweaked animations, HUD elements and a custom ending screen, which uses artwork by kaliistic that I commissioned a while back.

She has 12 palette presets, plus the ability to use custom palettes. Her voice clips are taken from the game Mass Effect and feature the voice of Jen Hale (because I think the voice of Naomi Hunter from Metal Gear Solid would be perfect for her). I also considered at some point including and alternate voice pack in Japanese, using the voice of Miyuki Sawashiro, but I realized I don't know enough Japanese to make one properly, haha

You can get sm64coopdx here (it requires a ROM image of SM64, which I trust you know how to find). You'll also need the Character Select mod to get this to work.
Download

Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers

This is a freeware racing game featuring primarily Sonic characters, built on top of the Doom engine. It can get pretty technical, but I'm mostly interested in the fact it has mod support. In fact, this was the first game I put Caroline in. The plan was to release a pack of BELOW HEAVEN characters buuuut I'm a busy woman. You know how it is.

Much like the previous mod, this uses Jen Hale's voice from Mass Effect. She has a Speed of 6 and Weight of 4, same as Tikal in the base game. Her rivals are Mail, Sakura Shinjuku and Blaze the Cat. You can get Ring Racers here. This is a sorta enhanced port of the first Super Mario Bros. for the PC, which also includes every other version of SMB that came out back in the day - Lost Levels, Special, All-Night Nippon... it's also heavily customizable and has a level editor! Plus mods. Some mods actually come with unique mechanics but this is good old Mario.

Here's where you can find SMB1R. And for our purposes, it also has mod support. I believe you need to play the game a little bit to unlock the ability to use custom skins, after which point simply put the mod in the correct folder and you're good to go. She plays exactly like Mega Man (these are, after all, skins).

You can find the game here. I'll probably update this post if I ever make any more mods. Meanwhile, progress has been slow but steady on her ACTUAL game... plus a couple other projects I'm involved in that may or not have Caroline in them. News about some of these coming this year, hopefully.
2025-12-28T04:00:00Z https://udomyon.com/blog/udonge25/
December 28, 2025

Hey, here's a post that relates to the site's name, somewhat.

As some of you are no doubt aware, one of my all-time favorite characters is Reisen Udongein Inaba from Touhou. She's one of the first Touhou girls I imprinted on (I'd have gotten into Touhou sooner if I had known it had bunnygirls), and someone I've been consistently drawing the entire time I've been a fan of the series. So I thought it'd be fun to pick one Reisen drawing I did for every year since I've been drawing her and put them all in a row. I couldn't think of a good way to format this post for social media, then I remembered I have my own website! Well... here's to 15 more! Happy New Year!
2025-09-28T05:00:00Z https://udomyon.com/blog/snakequiz/
September 28, 2025

How well do you know Solid Snake? This is a "quiz" I put together in a Twitter (RIP) thread back in 2020. At the time, there was some news going around about a Metal Gear Solid movie, which is hilarious to think about now because talks of such a movie have existed since 2007 and there has never been anything concrete on that front. But back then, it seemed like things were moving along, because reports had just come out claiming that Oscar Isaac would be playing the role of Solid Snake. And since film news sites were unfamiliar with the MGS series they would often attach those articles with a picture of Big Boss or Venom Snake or something, prompting a lot of people to reply with a gif of that one scene in MGS2:

So I had this idea to grab a bunch of images of characters who may or not be Solid Snake and see if anyone knew the answers. And not surface level stuff like a picture of Big Boss or Venom Snake, no. These are some relatively deep cuts. I am presenting the quiz as is here for preservation's sake (with the exception of more detailed answers), though I think I could probably tweak it a bit if I wanted. Keep in mind this will have SPOILERS for several Metal Gear games! So, without further ado...

Hi. Since it seems there's been a lot of confusion over who Solid Snake is, I have devised a quiz. Hover over the spoiler tags below the images for answers.

1. Is this Solid Snake?

Answer: No, that's a clone of him from Metal Gear Acid 2, simply known as "Snake". And the Solid Snake in Acid is already an AU version anyway...

2. What about the man depicted here? Is this Solid Snake?

Answer: Yes! That's an advertisement for the Metal Gear Solid 3/Ape Escape 3 collaboration. In MGS3's "Snake Vs. Monkey" minigame, you actually play as Solid Snake, unlike the regular game where you play as Naked Snake. They both have the same character model and voice though.

3. The man with the bandanna here - is that Solid Snake?

Answer: No, that's Raiden wearing a mask. This is from the reveal trailer for MGS4 shown at E3 2005, which actually used assets from MGS3... and whose main goal was to reassure players at the time that yes, Solid Snake would be the protagonist, not Raiden. To think there was a time when people didn't like the guy!

4. Is this Solid Snake?

Answer: Yes! This is Snake as he appears in the intro to Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake on the MSX. It's also just a photo of Mel Gibson that they digitized and added a bandanna to...

5. Is this Solid Snake? And what color is his hair?

Answer: Yes! This is from the "briefing" cutscene in MGS1, which is actually tucked away in a menu and completely easy to miss. It shows Snake with long hair, and... seemingly blond hair? He cuts it short before going into the mission in order to not look like Liquid Snake, but the issue of the color is unaddressed. Regardless, this has led to many a fan theory about whether Snake dyes his hair or not.

6. Is this Solid Snake?

Answer: This one is a bit of a trick question. For all we know, this is Snake (albeit an AU version). This is from the intro to Metal Gear: Ghost Babel. That game features a "true ending" once the player completes all the extra missions that implies the whole thing was a VR simulation Raiden went through (and this game came out a year before MGS2!), so it's unclear whether this is really Snake at all...

7. Is this Solid Snake?

Answer: Yes! This is the aforementioned AU version of Snake from Metal Gear Acid. And yes, there's a group in this game called "HRT" and it's really funny.

8. Is this Solid Snake?

Answer: No, this is a still of David Hayter (Snake's original VA) wearing the Solid Eye from one of the live action segments at the start of MGS4.

9. Are either of these Solid Snake?

Answer: Yes and no? The one on the left is "Solid Snake Bomber" and the one on the right is "Naked Snake Bomber", both appearing in Super Bomberman R and its sequels, as well as the (as of the time of this writing) Xbox-exclusive "Snake Vs. Bomberman" minigame in Metal Gear Solid Delta. Which stars Solid Snake, implying that the Bomber versions of the characters are different people.

10. Is this Solid Snake?

Answer: Maybe? This is from a special DLC available only in the Japanese version of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, called Hebidamashii (蛇魂 Snake Spirit). It's identical to the wooden sword that's already in the game, except it talks to you in the voice of Solid Snake. Has Snake died and his spirit currently inhabits this sword??

11. Is the man on the right here Solid Snake?

Answer: No! This is from Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions, which is a series of challenges in the MGS1 engine... that got recontextualized in MGS2 into being a canonical training regimen Raiden went through. So that's Raiden in a simulation, not Snake.

12. Is this Solid Snake?

Answer: No, this is a screenshot of MGS5's "Deja Vu" mission, where you control Big Boss. Except the player is using a skin that changes him to look like MGS1 Snake.

13. Is this man Solid Snake?

Answer: Yes, this is Solid Snake during Act 3 of MGS4, where you start out wearing a disguise that makes him look younger (he's old in 4, remember?). The disguise coincidentally makes him look like Gillian Seed, the protagonist of older Hideo Kojima adventure game Snatcher.

14. Is this Solid Snake?

Answer: Yes! This is Snake wearing a mask in MGS4 that makes him look like Otacon.

15. Is this Solid Snake?

Answer: Yes! This is Snake wearing a mask in MGS4 that makes him look like Raiden.

16. Is this Solid Snake?

Answer: Yes, this is Snake dressed as Altaïr from Assassin's Creed, a costume from MGS4 that was revealed in an April Fool's video which had Kojima saying "did you like it?", a clip that became a bit of a meme back in the day.

17. Is the man speaking here Solid Snake?

Answer: Yes, although it's only implied. This is a character in Boktai 2, a man who lost his memory and is believed to be a visitor from another world. It should be noted that the Boktai series was developed by the same team that made Metal Gear: Ghost Babel, explaining the cameo.

18. Is this Solid Snake?

Answer: Well, that depends on whether you consider Solid Snake Bomber to be Solid Snake, as "Sackboy versions of others characters" are basically in the same boat. If I were to update this quiz I could have included the Astro Bot version of him, too...

19. Is this Solid Snake and why does he have such sick moves

Answer: Yes! This is a screenshot from the PS2 game Evolution Skateboarding, where Snake (and other Konami stars) was a playable character. There was ALSO a skateboarding minigame in MGS2: Substance, but it was actually just a carved out part of Evolution Skateboarding to only include the Big Shell map and the MGS characters, so this screenshot could very well be from that instead.

20. Is this Solid Snake?

Answer: Sadly, yes. This is from the non-canonical sequel to the non-canonical NES port of Metal Gear, Snake's Revenge. A much-derided game.

21. Is this Solid Snake?

Answer: Solid Snake on 30 years of HRT... but seriously, no, this is Meryl Silverburgh. But not Meryl Silverburgh from Metal Gear Solid, this is Meryl Silverburgh from Policenauts. Apparently the original idea was to include Solid Snake in that game, but Kojima decided to go with a girl version of him instead, so it kinda is Snake in a way?

22. Is this Solid Snake?

Answer: No, this is Johnny Sasaki from Metal Gear Solid 4. A character who you only ever see wearing a mask until near the end of the game, and he turned out to be more handsome than he had any right to be...

23. Are any of the men depicted here Solid Snake?

Answer: It might be tricky to figure out if you haven't played MGS4, but Solid Snake is the second from the left here. "Mt. Snakemore", as this monument is called, is something that exists within Liquid Ocelot's submarine fortress "Outer Haven", where the climax of the game happens. And the guy decided to commission someone to carve the faces of Big Boss and his three sons in there... which, since Liquid died in MGS1, means he's the only person here who isn't an old man, funny enough.

24. Is this Solid Snake?

Answer: No, this is Kisume from Touhou. This is one of the alternate costumes you can give her in Touhou Puppet Dance Performance, a Pokémon-style fangame. Obviously an MGS reference.

25. Is Solid Snake in this image?

Answer: No, but Raiden is, as this is a screenshot from the MGS2 Plant Chapter. He's in the cardboard box, obviously.

26. Is Solid Snake in this image?

Answer: Probably not? This is a screenshot from the "Metal Gear Online" multiplayer component of MGS4, where you typically didn't play as Snake, except in one mode. I don't think anyone in this image is Snake, but maybe...

27. And last, but not least: is the man speaking here Hideo Kojima?

Answer: Yes and no! This is "Director Ozma" from Mega Man Battle Network 4, a character tied to the Boktai crossover mission in that game. Ozma is, of course, based on Hideo Kojima.

And there you have it! Perhaps keeping a backup of old posts from social media is a good way to use this blog. I don't think I have many others of this kind though. Honestly, putting together this post just made me want to play Boktai...
2025-07-29T03:00:00Z https://udomyon.com/blog/prism/
July 29, 2025

I know, I know. I said I was going to write my "first real post" soon and then eight months later I haven't done anything like that. Honestly, I had an idea for writing some stuff about pixel art and console limitations and I did get far enough to start writing a draft, but... I honestly felt like I wasn't saying anything meaningful. Mostly just yapping about console architecture in ways other people have said better. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do about that post, to be honest.

But that's not what this post is about. This post is about how I put together a little RPG Maker game in 20 days for an OC drawing event.

Venture a mysterious dungeon in search of a mythical artifact known as the Spark of Creativity. Is it a fossil? Or a crystal? Many perils await you on this journey... you'll need all your Drive and Inspiration to make it through. A real artistic challenge!

This is a short dungeon-crawlin' RPG made for Art Fight 2025. For those not in the know, Art Fight is a yearly event taking place in the month of July, wherein artists are assigned teams and compete by drawing art of each other's characters. Which I did! Because all the characters featured this game are (mostly) from people participating in the event.

The game has touch, mouse, and keyboard input. On keyboard Z is confirm and X is cancel. It works on mobile or desktop. There's also downloadable Windows and Mac builds, but to be honest I have no way of testing the Mac build. But RPG Maker MZ games are all a Chromium browser running javascript, so I feel like it should run fine.

I originally had the game up only on itch.io but, in the interests of not putting all my eggs in one basket (especially considering everything that's going on with itch right now) I'm also making the web version available right here on my personal site.

Click here to play it on your browser right now!
Windows Version | Mac Version | Original portrait art

Developing this thing was... stressful, to say the least? I'm glad I managed to finish it with time to spare, but I did have to make some concessions for it. Regardless, the reception has been incredibly positive and I'm glad I did it. Although I do feel like Art Fight in general has taken a toll on me this year, especially since I was juggling all my other obligations at the same time. I don't think I'm doing Art Fight again, to be honest! I know the allure of getting art of your OCs is too great sometimes, but frankly y'all should just be drawing my OCs without using Art Fight as an excuse, obviously. (This is a joke, do what you want)

One other benefit of working on this was that it helped me get more acquainted with the logic of eventing in RPG Maker, something I haven't played around with since middle school, so that'll certainly help with the development of BELOW HEAVEN as well. Which I believe I'll have more to say about very soon (and let's hope "very soon" this time doesn't mean "8 months from now").

CREDITS
Game by Lina "rabbitlegs" Modesto
Made in RPG Maker MZ by Kadokawa (and featuring some default assets from it)
Using third-party plugins by VisuStella
Testers: Arrietty, quariumarts, The Funniest Valentine

STARRING
Kaeric by Qwarq
Eris Altair by EngineerKappa
Phoebe by MadamLava
Rowan, Mordio Crow, Dust Bunny & Miffy Mouse by kittykichi
Elle by bluering8
Henry by fooblethegoblin
Serese & Bouquet by Stormie566
Ferdinand the Man Pigeon by Kate-the-Linguist
Seikou by IceDragonsDen
Clemency by ghostfiish
Gabi by cyber_husky
Peri by AdlerSchwarz
Kanna Pierce by pitohuiart
Marshmallow Cloudstraw by jdbuenol
Lily Pendra by AtomicMarshmallow
Chapter by onyxplored
Margot Elffire by Mad_Azure_Lad
Maiorah by quiesphere
Arrietty Lunaris, Clara Rivera & Turtlebot by Arrietty
Caroline, Kali & Kobold by rabbitlegs
Topaz, Heika & Eimi by PurpleNamako
Dew by J5daigada
Dr. Vendetta by MelodyGaysharks
Ace by EnigmaticAces
Michael "Marrow Prime" Ribson Sr. & Boney M by SuperFreaksDev
Pandora by chorogon
The Night Mother & The Prince by Pengogo
Ms. Paint by Bluwiikoon
Also featuring the likeness of Karisa by quariumarts
2025-01-22T03:00:00Z https://udomyon.com/blog/first/
January 22, 2025

I got the urge to redesign my website because I've noticed a lot of people around me feeling a longing for the Web 1.0 days - that with the whole thing of the internet becoming increasingly subjected to the interests of capital and whatnot. Y'all already know.

Social media is a tiring thing, between having to become a marketer of your own personality, walking on eggshells when presenting an opinion, worrying about things you say escaping your bubble, platforms that thrive on conflict, censorship... the list goes on. So it feels somewhat freeing to have a place to call my own.

Historically, I've always used my website (which I've had for 15 years) as basically a list of links for whatever I'm doing, which was a shame. Additionally, sometimes I feel the urge to just go off and talk about... something, whatever it is, but I feel like whatever platform I'm using isn't the correct place for it because it's usually tied to my art. So this place will work for that instead.

No promises, no expectations about content or subject matter or schedule. If I feel like writing, I'll write. Hope with this I can do my part in making the internet feel more like a fun part of our lives and not something that's constantly choking us.

I already have a vague idea of what my first proper blog post will be, so hopefully it'll be up soon. I also hope to have some actual news about BELOW HEAVEN very soon!
