Titles for Readers with Disabilities
UNC Press can provide digital files of adopted textbooks assigned to students with disabilities free of charge upon receipt of a formal request from the student’s campus accessibility service office, on the condition that a copy of the book has been purchased by or on behalf of the student. To make a request, email [email protected].
UNC Press also partners with the following organizations to provide our books in a variety of formats for visually impaired students and readers:
Bookshare
Bookshare is a nonprofit organization that makes books accessible to students at colleges and universities with verified print disabilities. Bookshare offers books in DAISY (talking book file format) and digital Braille formats. There is no charge for actively enrolled students to use titles available from the Bookshare alternative library. UNC Press provides Bookshare with digital files of many of its books to facilitate the conversion and provision of texts in the necessary formats.
RNIB Bookshare
RNIB Bookshare provides accessible books to learners with a print disability at all educational levels in the UK. Titles can be downloaded by (and on behalf of) learners who can read them electronically or adapt into various accessible formats (PDF, Word, DAISY, audio, BRF). The service is available to learners and their parents through the student’s school membership. Membership is free to all UK educational organizations and includes thousands of schools, colleges, universities and sensory support services across the UK. UNC Press supplies digital files to RNIB for their support services.
Project MUSE
UNC Press journals and ebooks are hosted on Project MUSE. Project MUSE has implemented comprehensive accessibility workflows, including enhanced checks and enriched metadata, to help publishers, libraries, and researchers identify accessible content.
