This Amica location has Johnson Controls heat pumps. Retrofit Heat Pump at 88 Grandview Way

The project started with a resident at 88 Grandview Way calling our Unilux HVAC team with an urgent need to stop her leaking heat pump. When our team arrived, we noticed the problem was much bigger than merely a leak, the whole heat pump unit had stopped working. The heat pumps at 88 Grandview Way had been in use since the 90s and were running into several issues as they had been in use for over 20 years! These heat pumps efficiency had severely declined, and our retrofit heat pump was the solution this building was looking for.

Performance Issues with Original Heat Pump

The resident’s comfort had been dramatically impacted because of her leaking heat pump. Her old Whalen hybrid cabinet heat pump only provided air conditioning with a hot water coil running on a water loop that came out of the suite’s combination hot water tank. The unit had completely broken down, making it uncomfortably hot to live in the suite.

Our primary customer wasn’t the only one facing issues. The problem of broken-down heat pumps was common at 88 Grandview Way. The project started with a resident at 393 King St W looking for a heat pump replacement. She had searched different heat pump manufacturers and obtained competitive pricing, but when she found our complete heat pump replacement package she reached out for more information! The heat pumps at 393 King St W in Toronto had been in use since 2001. The old heat pumps in this building were running into several issues. The resident’s heat pump needed to be replaced to improve her home comfort. The original heat pumps had been repaired several times, but the heating was unreliable, and the air conditioning had completely failed. In fact, every time the resident ran her air conditioning the unit leaked!

Original Malfunctioning Heat Pump

The resident’s old McQuay heat pump was unreliable and failing. The air conditioning system did not work, and the drain pan was completely rusted with no method of replacing it, resulting in the unit leaking when put in cooling mode. Troubleshooting Original Heat Pump

Our team had to troubleshoot an issue during the replacement process. The heat pump was a short closet unit, and as a result, it was difficult to pull the old unit out to replace it with the new heat pump. The original unit was a custom designed unit and was much shorter than our Unilux HVAC normal chassis. With these types of units, replacements are not easily available. Nevertheless, our Unilux HVAC team was able to resolve this issue.

To replace the resident’s tricky unit, our team engineered a low style cabinet with a removable chassis, ensuring maintenance in the future would be seamless. The size of our unit was 2” taller to accommodate the rails for a removable chassis and our team installed a Unilux 3-ton chassis.

Our professional team replaced this heat pump unit in one day while being careful and respectful in the suite as well as ensuring not to disturb the other tenants. The resident did not experience much heating or cooling downtime. This heat pump replacement comes to show how Unilux HVAC can tackle any problem.

Issues with Original Heat Pump

The 30-year-old ClimateMaster heat pumps were running into several issues, impacting residents’ home comfort. Residents were experiencing leaks and floods in their suites; the motors had burned out and the units were extremely loud. Heat Pump Retrofit at 310 Mill Street South, Brampton

The project started with a resident at 310 Mill Street South completing our online Unilux HVAC booking process for a heat pump replacement. The resident found our retrofit heat pump solutions through an online search and was impressed by our product offering and 2-year parts and labour warranty program. 

The resident provided their information through our booking portal, including their old heat pump manufacturer, chassis size and unit tag.  We went to the building to measure the old unit to confirm our universal chassis fit perfectly in the suite. The resident was excited for us to replace the old heat pump with a new Unilux HVAC heat pump.

Problems with Original McQuay Heat Pump

The resident’s original failing McQuay heat pump had been in use for 30 years and run into several issues. The fan was still operating but the heating and cooling functionality was completely gone. The lack of heating and cooling made living in his suite unbearable.  

Once our Unilux HVAC team opened the original McQuay heat pump unit it was obvious why it had broken down—it had been repaired to death. The past technicians who had repaired the resident’s McQuay heat pump unit had cut and tried to re-work the refrigerant lines which caused the whole heat pump to malfunction. 

The controls for the original heat pump were also not user friendly. The resident only had the option to turn heating or cooling on and then had to adjust the fan speed with a dial. With his new heat pump replacement, this younger resident was also looking to ditch this aged unit for a Unilux HVAC retrofit heat pump that provided smarter, modern controls.

Heat Pump Replacement in Downtown Brampton

Our Unilux HVAC team performed the install at 310 Mill St in the morning. The whole process only took a few hours. During the inspection, the resident only wanted to replace the chassis, not the fan or controls. After our team’s inspection of the unit, we explained to the resident that we also wanted to replace the controls because they were failing. We did not want to incorporate our quality retrofit heat pumps if the overall system was not repaired and could lead them to fail. The customer agreed to the benefits of upgrading, and our Unilux HVAC team replaced the blower/motor and included our Universe Thermostat to increase his level of control over his heat pump. 

Our team installed our more efficient ECM motor. Due to the original McQuay heat pump system being 30 years old, it used an inefficient old PSC motor. This motor was extremely inefficient, did not provide multiple fan speeds and was much noisier because the fan kicked off at full speed.

Troubleshooting the Old McQuay Units

Our team had to troubleshoot a couple issues during the replacement process. One of the issues was ensuring utmost delicacy during the replacement process. This was because the residents old McQuay chassis was mounted on the floor. The hardwood floor in his suite went up to the heat pump and our team had to be extra cautious to ensure we did not scratch his floors. To mitigate this problem, our skilled team was especially careful in removing the old McQuay unit. We also put down blankets for added safety. In the end, the resident’s floors remained untouched!

The other challenge our team faced during the replacement process was with an adapter attached on the shut off valve. The adapter on the resident’s McQuay heat pump had been on there from 30 years ago and our Unilux HVAC team had to remove it for our hose to fit on the shut off valve. This delayed our install for only 15 minutes, displaying how our skilled team can overcome any challenges fast and efficiently.

Heat Pump Replacement at 20 McFarlane Drive

20 McFarlane Drive is a 30-year-old building located in Georgetown, Ontario. Unilux HVAC visited this aging building to investigate their heat pumps and examine if this building needed our HVAC solutions. After talking to the residents and property manager at 20 McFarlane, our team noticed a problem with the management of the heat pump units in this building. Unlike most buildings that have proper HVAC management procedures in place, we learned that there was no maintenance program for this building’s heat pumps – leaving the heat pump maintenance to the responsibility of the suite owner.

We concluded that the heat pumps at McFarlane had been neglected. The residents in the building did not even have a point of contact to get maintenance on their heat pump issues. Due to this, there was a range of deterioration of heat pumps reflecting the changing degree of upkeep and maintenance in each suite.

Successful Unilux HVAC Demo Unit in 20 McFarlane's Lobby

Unilux HVAC’s superior retrofit heat pumps were the solution residents in 20 McFarlane needed to address the issues from this building’s neglect of their heat pumps. To prove our heat pumps were the best replacement option on the market, our team talked to the property manager and received approval to install a demo unit in the lobby. We set out to prove that our retrofit heat pumps would directly replace the original ClimateMaster heat pump units in the suites and could be delivered and installed quickly.

Our team also set up a booth in the lobby to answer any questions residents may have about our heat pumps as well as have one to one meetings resident could set up to discuss our solutions. For five hours each day, our experienced Unilux HVAC team met with residents going in and out, answered questions and talked about replacements.  We are committed to putting our customers first.

Original Failing ClimateMaster Heat Pump

A local competitor was performing replacements and doing maintenance on some of the units in 20 McFarlane. Many suites in this building had already replaced their heat pumps with ClimateMaster. These residents explained to our team that they have not had the best experience with this local competitor. Residents noted it was costing twice as much as ours for a heat replacement and the delivery was incredibly slow.

A unique design feature of the original heat pumps that caused challenges was the hard piped copper in place of flex hoses. Most heat pumps use a flex hose system that allows for easy access around the hoses but the original heat pumps in these buildings used copper pipe. This created challenges in placing the motor/blower into the unit because it was difficult to wiggle it behind the hard-piped mess.

Additionally, the actual hook up to the unit was different because of the copper pipe.  This meant that our team could not get the chassis all the way out without disconnecting the valves and we had to use an adapter. The copper pipe in the original units were done by a plumber which caused each suite to have different wiring, creating an inconsistency that our team accounted for and managed successfully.

Heat Pump Replacement 168 King Street East

The project started with our partners at Lux-Bull HVAC Services visiting aging condominiums to understand residents’ comfort and heat pump issues. The heat pumps at 168 King St. East in Toronto had been in use since 1997. The old heat pumps were in rough shape after 24 years. It was determined that many heat pumps needed to be replaced as they were leading to resident discomfort. Common issues with the original heat pumps included: noisy equipment with limited air flow, improper hot and cold air filtration, and constant break down of units.

Deteriorating Original Heat Pump

Residents’ old ClimateMaster heat pumps were loud, failing and did not provide them with the heating or air conditioning comfort they desired. Our whisper-quiet heat pumps were the solution that they needed.

Several condo owners contacted our Unilux HVAC team, and we were happy to help improve their home comfort with new heat pumps.

Replacing the Heat Pumps

Residents reached out to Unilux HVAC to get their failing heat pumps replaced. All equipment installed used our universal chassis. This equipment was supplied with new stainless steel drain pan, blower/motor with bulkhead adaptor and a new front baffle cover with MERV 8 filters. Our professional and skilled team replaced multiple units, with installation in each suite taking under 3 hours due to the one-size fit all nature of the units. From these installs, half of the units used. We replaced the units in the building while being careful and respectful in each suite as well as ensuring not to disturb the other tenants. 

Residents did not experience much heating or cooling downtime and the installation was a smooth process.

Our customer reached out to Unilux HVAC because his two heat pumps broke down at 165 Legion Road North in Etobicoke during the worst heat wave of the summer! With temperatures at 30°C outside, the lack of cooling in our customer’s suite made it incredibly uncomfortable to live in.

Replacing Broken Heat Pumps in Etobicoke Building

Our team went to the Etobicoke building for an inspection. Upon our investigation, we learned that the heat pumps in the building were fairly young. The original Whalen heat pump units were only 8 years old, but already failing! The original heat pumps were a 0.75 ton and 1 ton located in the customer’s primary bedroom and living room; both were not producing cold air… in plus 30°C weather. 

The inspection confirmed that our Unilux HVAC universal chassis would be a perfect fit for the customer at 165 Legion Road North. Our Unilux HVAC team was able to complete the installation process in less than 36 hours after meeting our customer. 

The customer’s home had a Roger Smart Home thermostat. Our team is very experienced in wiring our heat pumps to different brands of thermostats and this was no exception. Unilux HVAC heat pumps were very compatible operating with the Roger Smart Home thermostat systems.
