Dear Yuletide 2023 Author
Happy Yuletide, dear author! I love all of these fandoms and they all deserve more fic, so I'm going to be so happy to read whatever you write as long as you don't hit any of my DNWs. If you want to have a look through my AO3, I'm
vae over there too. I kudos every fic I finish, and bookmark the ones I love. Everything in my bookmarks is something I've already read and want to remember so I can read it again.
In general, please avoid: non-con, dub-con, rape, sexual assault, surgery, dismemberment, kidnapping, pregnancy, slavery, character death, cheating, trans headcanons, iambic pentameter, second person point of view
I've mostly requested canons where I really love the setting as well as the characters, but I'm absolutely up for a good AU if you can maintain the dynamics between the characters. I love historical and setting details thrown in, and I love focus on characters. I love found family. I love people finding a place where they can be accepted, respected and loved for everything that they are. I love open communication, trust deep enough to allow people to be vulnerable and have their trust validated. I love people discovering things about themselves and each other. I love people trusting each other enough to be goofy and silly with each other.
While I do like a bit of smut and a touch of kink, I'm honestly just as happy reading less explicit fic, so please don't feel like you need to write smut if you're not comfortable doing so. If you do want to write something explicit, I really like explicit consent. It doesn't have to be drawn out, it doesn't even need a lot of focus, but a mention goes a long way. If kink is involved, the same goes for negotiation - I want to know that everyone involved knows what they're getting involve in and that they actively want it. And that everyone gets looked after afterwards!
If you'd like to write something involving kink, please exclude age play, pet play, watersports, scat, vomit and vore. Pre-negotiated consensual non-consent or dubious consent is fine, but please include the negotiations for that to make it clear that consent was given in advance and that the lack of consent is only in play.
Some kinks I like to read: dominance and submission, bondage, honour bondage, rope bondage (including shibari), suspension, spanking, flogging, orgasm control, hair pulling.
And now onto the fandoms!
Ivan Van Norman (Critical Role (Web Series) RPF)
Marisha Ray (Critical Role (Web Series) RPF)
Matthew Mercer (Critical Role (Web Series) RPF)
Taliesin Jaffe (Critical Role (Web Series) RPF)
If you can't fit all four characters into your fic idea, you do not have to include all of them in the fic.
What I love about the fandom: oh man, these awesome nerds. I love their kindness and their determination to keep doing better. I love their constant work to include as many variants of people as possible in their storytelling. I love their creativity and their drive. I love how much they love each other, trust each other, and support each other. I love the creative risks they're willing to take because of that trust. I love Matt's endlessly inventive brain and the way he shows his love for his players through the world he's created. I love Marisha's determination and the way she gives her full attention and effort to whatever she chooses to do. I love Taliesin leaning into weirdness and being entirely unashamed to embrace life beyond the mainstream. I love Ivan's care in crafting games that push for more intensity and how hard he works to create a safe space for his players where everyone's agreed boundaries but still trust him enough to push those boundaries.
What I'd love to see in fic: I embrace the "everyone is polyam and bi" headcanon when it comes to CR RPF fic, but I'm genuinely going to be just as happy with gen fic as with shippy or E rated fic. Domestic movie night/afternoon at Matt & Marisha's place with Omar bothering everyone in turn. Sleepy post-game cuddles after a hard studio session. Enthusiastic sex in any combination of people. Formal kink scenes that mirror the trust we've seen in games. Show me their comfort with each other and how much they care.
Galen (The Saint of Steel)
Istvhan (The Saint of Steel)
Stephen (The Saint of Steel)
What I love about the fandom: the acknowledgment that perfection is impossible, practicality and kindness hold so much value. People are complicated and work to find solutions that compromise in ways that benefit everyone. People are damaged in the eyes of society and themselves and still have value and worth. Stubborn insistence on acceptance. (Except for the priests of the Hanged Mother.)
What I'd love to see in fic: I'm here for big strong berserker paladins that craft. I'd love to see Stephen learning to knit and why he knits socks, Galen learning to spin or picking it up again after the death of the god. I'd love to see Istvhan's response to his fellow paladins crafting and whether he also tries and maybe finds more frustration than therapeutic reward. I'd love to see the first time Galen offers his yarn to Stephen to knit, or the first time Stephen asks Galen for yarn to knit with. If crafting isn't your thing, I'd be so happy with temple shenanigans. Please feel free to include any other characters from the tagset if you'd like to do so - everyone (except possibly gnoles) needs warm socks!
Geoffrey Chaucer (A Knight's Tale)
Kate (A Knight's Tale)
If you'd prefer to have a fic focused on just one of these characters instead of writing them together, I'd be just as happy with that. Either gen or ship fic is good if you'd like to write them together!
What I love about the fandom: Gleeful anachronism paired with a remarkable amount of historical accuracy. Found family. Refusal to let the rules of the society you're born into dictate the limits of your life. Kate, badass lady blacksmith making a life for herself after her husband's death and taking no shit from other smiths, Will, or anyone else in the party she's hitched her metaphorical wagon to.Chaucer, a man without shame who glories in words and who uses those words to fight against hypocrisy and bullies wherever he encounters them.
What I'd love to see in fic: Kate making her own decisions and controlling her own life, having her skills recognised and valued, finding herself a place where she's accepted and loved (not necessarily romantically) for who she is as well as what she can do. Chaucer's travels and where he finds or makes a home, how he balances that with his marriage. How (or if) both of their lives change due to Will's elevation to the peerage and whether they keep up the friendship they forged during the movie.
Kayden (Sagas of Sundry: Dread)
The Storyteller (Sagas of Sundry)
Tanner Sills
For this fandom, please do not feature Sat as a major character. Mention of her is fine. If you want to exclude the Storyteller from your fic, that's okay, but please always include Kayden and Tanner.
What I love about the fandom: the blend of acting, improvising, shared storytelling with the threat and uncertainty of the unbranded stacked block tower - which is incapable of love. The continuous sense of dread introduced by the mechanic of the tower, the way every small victory was hard won, the fact that every single one of the friends in the group responded to the trauma of the first encounter in different ways that are revealed through the trials of the second.
What I'd love to see in fic: I ship Kayden and Tanner and if you also do, I'd love to see your take on their relationship. Obviously canon doesn't leave them in a good place for that, so if you want to go with an AU setting, or a Tanner lives AU, or focus on the time between the first trip to Black Mountain and the second, or include Tanner only in flashbacks, it's all good! If you don't ship them, I'd love to see something focused on the antagonism between them, perhaps on the cause of that, perhaps on the fallout of that after Tanner's death. If you want to include the Storyteller, I'd really enjoy to see how that kind of goading would impact on either Kayden's or Tanner's actions and emotions.
Alice Burbage (Will)
Christopher Marlowe (Will)
Thomas Walsingham (Will 2017)
William Shakespeare (Will)
What I love about the fandom: More gleeful anachronism! So much colour! Theatre and performance and politics and queerness and nothing and no one being as simple and straightforward as they first appear. Competent, stubborn, fearless women. Kit Marlowe, eyeliner-wearing fey queer goth punk nihilist spy and playwright of my heart, a character who might as well have strolled straight out of my id. Alice Burbage, determined to make her own path in the world no matter what it might cost. Thomas Walsingham, nephew to a spymaster and destined to become one but still holding such warmth in his heart and such faith in Kit even when Kit lashes out to disguise his own vulnerability. Will Shakespeare, young and still finding his place and his faith with such confidence and disregard for consequence.
What I'd love to see in fic: One season was nowhere near enough! I'd love to see more of this vibrant, dangerous London. More of the political shenanigans that Kit and Thomas engage in. More of the theatrical rivalry (that Will has no idea he's engaging in). Does Alice return to London? Does she send letters? Does Kit's work take him (or him and Thomas) to wherever Alice was bound at the end of the season? If you want to include any of the other characters from the show in minor roles, I'd be happy to see them involved, especially Moll or Richard.
Do Not Wants
