Ventity 5.2 has just been released. You can download a copy with a 60-day evaluation license, or update your existing copy.
5.2 is primarily a performance upgrade, with parallel execution of sensitivity runs and improved savelists for managing sensitivity output. There are also some nice usability improvements, like duplication of Actions, as well as a number of bug fixes.

See the Release Notes for details.
If you missed 5.1, there are more cool new features like Model Maps:

If you’re new to Ventity:
The Help system contains a lot of good “getting started” material, including a series of videos, which are also on Vimeo, starting with

Ventity licensing is now perpetual, and lapsed licenses through 4.9 will continue to work with this version. If you have Vensim Pro or DSS with current maintenance, you already have a Ventity license. If you don’t have your key, email us at [email protected] for a copy.
Welcome MIT System Dynamics Alumni
The MIT Alumni System Dynamics Group is a vibrant community committed to advancing the field of System Dynamics—a discipline pioneered at MIT by Jay W. Forrester—through interdisciplinary collaboration, experiential learning, and real-world application. The group brings together alumni, students, affiliates, and professionals to tackle complex challenges across various sectors, including healthcare, sustainability, technology, and policy.
Through events like simulations, workshops, and networking sessions, members engage in action learning to deepen their understanding of dynamic systems and their impact. The group’s mission emphasizes amplifying knowledge synergies, increasing awareness of systems thinking, and fostering inclusive opportunities for innovation and problem-solving within the global MIT ecosystem.
All are welcome – including MIT alumni, students, faculty, the MIT community, friends of MIT, and anyone who wishes to join, learn, and meet others.

The MIT Alumni SD Group’s next event, June 25th virtually, will apply the System Dynamics lens to tariff turbulence.
Tariffs are part of a control system that regulates the flow of goods across borders. While designed to protect industries or influence trade balances, these policies often create ripple effects that reshape supply chains and macroeconomic performance.
System Dynamics provides a deeper understanding of how tariff systems work, and what they actually do, by examining the feedback mechanisms that drive system behavior over time. These systems are not just mechanical – they’re shaped by human decisions, shifting incentives, delayed reactions and evolving policy goals.
Ventana’s own Tom Fiddaman will share some models System Dynamics history, and we’ll experiment with an online simulation of tariff impacts.

– Vensim 10.2 Released
———————————————————————————————————————————————
Vensim 10.2 is now available for download:
– New loops tool. We’ve redesigned the loops tool. You can now highlight structure on a sketch.
– New causal chain tool. Similar to the loops tool, the causal chain tool allows you to find the routes between two variables in a model. You can also highlight these on a sketch as well.
– Multi-core sensitivity on the Mac is now available.
– New custom graph and table editors.
– Upgrades to the search tool now allows you to search within equations. For example, if you need all functions that read an Excel file, you can enter XLS and the tool will only display variables that have equations with “XLS” in them.
If you’re not yet current with 10.2, there are other new developments of note.
– The Sensitivity2All tool within Vensim allows you to quickly identify the most important constants in your model and automatically get an overview of how all constants influence the calculation of any parameter of interest (Patent Pending). Full details are in the help system at https://www.vensim.com/documentation/sensitivity2all.html.
– Multi-run configuration tool. This allows you to store a pre-defined set of experiments that can be re-run with minimal clicks. Full details are at https://www.vensim.com/documentation/run-configuration-tool.html
– In a similar spirit, the new Action Recorder can build command scripts as you run models. https://www.vensim.com/documentation/action-recorder-interface.html
There are also many aesthetic, usability and stability upgrades. Simulation setup and Synthesim
controls are better than ever. File format and submodel upgrades enhance team use of source control, even in mixed Windows-Mac environments. For most platforms, the new version includes a crash reporter that can recover model work-in-progress.

1. Ventana Systems News
—————————————————————————————————
Ventana is working on a number of applications that combine models and data to analyze strategies in complex systems:
A state COVID19 response model that interprets test statistics and facilitates resource allocation. The model pools information from the 50 US states, and runs in parallel on HPC servers.
A city/utility low-carbon strategy model that examines relationships among buildings, energy-consuming devices, electric and other vehicles, and utility rates. Key factors influencing the ZNE goal are directly controllable by the utility include pricing, rebate strategy, investment policies, time of use pricing and customer incentive-related policies to accelerate adoption of energy efficient products including tradeoffs between fuel sources and natural gas. Other factors are largely uncontrollable, e.g., governmental policies and technology improvements that lead to market penetration by all-electric vehicles, electric heat pumps and solar energy systems. The utility can incentivize adoption of technology in the city and influence governmental policies in the state. Therefore, it was important for the utility to readily calculate and assess the relative influence of each factor over time to facilitate preparation of rate cases for regulators.
A state energy sustainability platform that allows an energy-producing state to explore alternative pathways that serve de-carbonization, reliability and employment goals, blending CCS and EOR with emerging PV, solar and storage, including a novel statistical treatment of variability.
A model for economic guidance of an economy: In preparation for the country’s strategic plan, upcoming IMF review, and climate commitments to the UN, Ventana was requested to critique a national model through 2045. Review included modeling price formation and market clearing; financing and representation of policy instruments; and representation of poverty and wealth distribution.
An assessment of the science base emerging from the Deep Water Horizon accident, with a meta-model of the Gulf of Mexico’s environmental and economic health. Phase 1 of the task was to capture and synthesize expert knowledge from technical studies of the ten year $500M program. A series of expert workshops facilitated by Ventana captured and diagramed relationships and feedbacks among expert knowledge elements in the major study fields of Physics, Ecosystem, Socio-Economics, and Human Health.
The confluence of challenges we face – COVID, climate, social justice, and political corrruption to name a few, leave us convinced that now, more than ever, technology must support sophisticated, accurate modeling at the breakneck speed of crisis decision making. We remain dedicated to providing tools to support both your most urgent needs and your most important long-term strategies.

2. Vensim 8.2 Release
—————————————————————————————————
Vensim now runs on the new Apple silicon Macs. The MacOS release of Vensim 8.2 has a universal binary, it runs natively on both Intel and M1 processors. This allows you to use the full potential of the new Apple M1 processor. We’ve spent a lot of time tracking down Mac bugs and idiosyncracies – we think you’ll find performance much improved.
This release continues the rollout of a new graphics framework for model diagrams, with improved looks and usability.
Vensim DSS can now export models to run in web browsers via WebAssembly. Models run on the client side with no latency, so Synthesim provides a good user experience, and you can customize the web side in javascript. You can try one example at http://vensim.com/temp/gomri/ And don’t forget, if you want to run a simulation online with extremely rich output, gaming, and other advanced features, our good friends at Forio can do this (https://forio.com).
Vensim Pro and DSS can now combine submodels. This makes group model development easier and facilitates re-use of models. More details on this and examples are in the help system, browse to “Reference Manual” and then “Sub-models”.

This video explores a simple epidemic model, parameterized for a community confronting coronavirus.
You can run the model using Vensim PLE or the Model Reader (or any higher version). Our getting started and running models videos provide a quick introduction to the software.
The model:
For PLE/Pro/DSS: community corona 7.mdl
For the Reader (or any other): community corona 7.vpmx.zip
There’s now an update: community corona 8-mdl+vpmx.zip (vpmx and mdl formats)
We’ve also translated it to Ventity, which has some complementary capabilities.
There’s another copy at metasd.com, where you can share comments. Also, check back here for updates to the model.
This companion video builds up the classic SIR epidemic model from basic components, illustrates some Vensim features, and touches some System Dynamics concepts of growth, equilibrium, and loop dominance.
The models are in this package:
They’re distributed under the MIT license, so you can use and adapt them for teaching or any other purpose.

Vensim 8 has been released. It’s is now fully 64 bit on both Mac and Windows (you can still download 32 bit versions if you need to).
The Mac version has undergone some significant improvements both to stability and usability. If using DSS, also included is an external function library project, and the scripts to allow models to be compiled. We are working on a dylib for the Mac in a similar way that the Vensim DLL operates on Windows.
If you’ve been using the beta or first official release (July/early August), it’s worth upgrading to the latest 8.0.1, which contains an important fix for autosaved backups.

3. Ventity 3 Release
—————————————————————————————————
We released Ventity 3 at the System Dynamics conference in Albuquerque. We enjoyed the Thursday workshop, where we got a chance to work with serious practitioners on applications that challenge the limits of traditional SD tools.
Ventity 3 includes new user defined macros and a beta geospatial visualization feature (much improved in the latest 3.0.1 edition). We’re particularly excited about this, because Ventity’s data architecture is a natural fit with GIS.

Above: Ventity geospatial visualization of economic impacts of an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Data is sourced from shapefile attribute tables. Entities are linked to polygons and interact by networks. Colors and animation reveal behavior over time.
Ventity is targeted at problems that are hard to solve in most simulation languages. For example:
The really big change from most simulation languages is that we’ve replaced arrays with collections of entities, identified by attributes. This makes for a more natural and data-friendly problem description. Detail becomes a property of entities, not equations, which makes it a lot easier to coordinate and change. Entities are modular, so they’re easier to reuse and share among teams. Entities can be created and deleted dynamically, so there’s no need to simulate a lot of zeroes for things that haven’t happened yet. Similarly, a list of entity relationships can represent a sparse matrix, so there’s no need to clutter your model with zeroes for project phases that aren’t prerequisites or relationships that don’t exist among people. All this happens in a development environment with modern, interactive charts and windowing.
Ventity is available with a free trial and academic license, and affordable commercial subscriptions. Vensim Pro and DSS licenses with current maintenance include a commercial Ventity subscription. You can learn more and download a trial at Ventity.biz. If you have a previous expired trial, and would like to take another look, contact us for a license extension. http://www.ventity.biz

5. Applications
—————————————————————————————————
We regularly see impressive applications of Vensim and note them at Vensim.com or on social media. If you’ve developed something cool, drop us a note and we’d be happy to share your news!
Here are two can run live, online:
The latest version of the award-winning C-ROADS climate change policy simulator is powered by Vensim, using Todd Fincannon’s open SDEverywhere transpiler to run in a browser with an elegant interface and speed and interactivity rivaling Synthesim. Its companion En-ROADS, due this fall, is even more elegant.
Energy Innovation has an Energy Policy Simulator that lets users explore what it takes to achieve energy and emissions targets, in detail. The simulator has a custom HTML5 interface that runs a Vensim model on servers using the Multicontext shared library. The interface was developed by Todd Fincannon. It has extensive documentation, and the Policy Design Guide explains many energy system policies in the internally consistent framework that a model provides. You can also download and run the open source model on your desktop.
