Scaling Water-Energy-Food Innovations in MENA

Water and Energy for Food (WE4F) MENA is a regional initiative advancing private-sector solutions at the nexus of water, energy, and food. Building on the success of WE4F 1.0, the programme accelerates climate-smart innovation, supports growth-oriented enterprises, and strengthens ecosystems across the Middle East and North Africa.

WE4F 2.0 MENA expands on this foundation to scale the next wave of high-impact enterprises and strengthen the enabling environment in which they operate. The programme aims to support a portfolio of at least 120 enterprises across the region, ensuring that growth leads to real water savings, resilient food systems, reduced emissions, and stronger regional livelihoods.

What WE4F 2.0 MENA Offers

WE4F 2.0 MENA programme supports innovative enterprises that improve water and energy efficiency, strengthen food systems, and enhance climate resilience.

TRACKS OF SUPPORT

WE4F 2.0 MENA programme operates through four tailored tracks:

Track 1 – SMEs Embedded in Value Chains

Support for established enterprises to enhance water and energy efficiency and scale sustainably.

Track 2 – High-Growth Scale-Ups

Acceleration for innovative companies with strong potential for regional expansion and investment.

Track 3 – Nascent Context Track

Adapted support in challenging environments to strengthen resilience and inclusive growth.

Track 4 - Syria Track

Dedicated support for up to 30 early-stage enterprises in the water energy food sector.

Through these tracks, the WE4F 2.0 MENA programme mobilizes capital, strengthens value chains, and accelerates climate-smart innovation across the region.

We currently work in nine countries in the Middle East and North Africa regions. WE4F 2.0 MENA has its headquarters in Beirut, Lebanon. There are additional country coordination offices in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and we have partners all across the region. WHO WE ARE

The WE4f 2.0 MENA Team

Nicolas Farhat

Deputy General Manager, Berytech

As the program manager, Nicolas is leading WE4F 2.0 MENA team’s day-to-day management, as well as the various work streams and activities. He also ensures that WE4F 2.0’s objectives in the MENA are met, and that all stakeholders (including but not limited to innovators, partners, donors and investors) are well catered for. Before joining WE4F in 2020, he amassed an 11-year regional and multi-industry experience in Corporate Banking, Syndication lending, Project Finance non-recourse basis, and PPPs, including utility scale renewable energy projects, on top of ad-hoc missions related to nationwide high level strategic projects. Nicolas has worked on arranging and structuring specialized transactions of a $2billion aggregate value, interfaced with large and complex corporations, UHNWI individuals, Government officials, IFIs, DFIs, Tier 1 global legal counsels, technical and financial consultants, and environmental and social advisors.

Dr. Ahmad Huzayyin

Technical Assistance Specialist, Chemonics Egypt

Ahmed oversees technical assistance to our innovators at the MENA RIH. He is an assistant professor at the Electrical Power and Machines Department, Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University and an assistant professor (status only) at the Energy Systems Group, University of Toronto. Ahmed acquired his PhD from the University of Toronto in 2011 and worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution till 2013. Ahmed is a co-founder in Cleantech Arabia and is currently the manager of the Eco-Industrial Unit which he co-founded within Chemonics Egypt Consultants (CEC). On a policy level, Ahmed worked on projects related to industrial energy efficiency and sustainability, energy planning, as well as environmental and social issues relevant to the energy industry.

Aline Bussmann

Partnerships Specialist, Cewas

Aline is the Co-Director of cewas and in charge of developing partnerships for the MENA RIH and its innovator cohort. Aline is a water management specialist by education and a natural resource manager by practice, connecting agricultural, sanitation, waste and other environmental sectors with innovation, business development and impact financing. Establishing networks, projects and businesses is her passion and mission, which she utilizes for the MENA RIH as she has done to build the cewas Middle East regional branch. Aline has extensive water, environment, and business -related knowledge and network in the Middle East and East Africa, which she draws upon to coach and train sector-specific businesses and support developing respective markets.

Nivine Chaaban

Grants and Finance Manager, Berytech

As Lead of the Grant and Finance Unit, Nivine oversees WE4F 2.0 MENA Program’s grant management, financial governance, compliance, and reporting functions, ensuring effective and transparent allocation of funding to high-impact innovators. She works closely with innovators, partners, and donors to ensure financial rigor, accountability, and alignment with WE4F’s strategic objectives.
Before joining WE4F, Nivine built over 20 years of experience across development finance and banking. She led multi-donor food system and private sector development programs, managing grants, enterprise support mechanisms, and stakeholder engagement in complex operating environments. Prior to her work in development programs, she held senior positions in the banking sector, specializing in SME finance, credit risk assessment, and business development. Her background combines strong financial expertise with hands-on experience supporting private sector growth and resilience.

Talar Kokjian

Communication & Learning Management Specialist, Cewas

Talar Kokjian is passionate about telling the stories behind innovation. She works to connect people, ideas, and lessons learned across the region, turning the experiences of WE4F innovators into shared knowledge that inspires change and encourages collaboration.
With a background in sustainable innovation, environmental initiatives, and social entrepreneurship, Talar believes that powerful stories can drive learning just as much as data can. She focuses on capturing impact in ways that are meaningful, human, and accessible – helping others see how regional innovations can lead to big transformations in water, energy, and food systems.

Elie Elias

Program Officer, Berytech

As a Program Officer for the Water and Energy for Food (WE4F) program, Elie assists in developing and monitoring work plans, operational deliverables, and project-related reports.
He holds a degree in Business Management from the Lebanese American University. Elie previously contributed to the growth of a Lebanese startup providing agricultural services in permaculture, where he developed hands-on experience in operations and supported the management of projects related to sustainable farming practices.
This exposure strengthened his interest in agriculture and the agrifood sector, leading him to pursue a Master’s degree in Agri-Food Technology from the University of Lincoln in the United Kingdom, from which he graduated with distinction. His Master’s thesis, titled “The Future of Avocado Supply Chain in Lebanon: A Case Study of a Family Business Farm,” explored the future of avocado production in Lebanon, with a focus on sustainability and the development of supply chains that support small-scale family farms.

Manal Kanaan

Grants and Finance Specialist, Berytech

Manal Kanaan is a Grants and Finance Specialist with over 14 years of experience in grants management, financial oversight, compliance, and partnership development across international development, humanitarian, academic, and financial institutions. Within the Water and Energy for Food (WE4F) Regional Innovation Hub for the MENA region, she leads grant financial management, contract administration, and technical assistance procurement, ensuring full compliance with donor regulations and high operational efficiency.
She plays a role in designing and strengthening grant management systems, supporting innovators in financial governance and controls, and contributing to donor reporting and program close-out processes. In the new WE4F 2.0 phase, she continues in the same capacity, leading the updating of policies, manuals, contractual frameworks, and financial procedures in alignment with the requirements of the new donor consortium.
Prior to joining WE4F, Manal held key grants and compliance roles at INTERSOS and the Global Health Institute at the American University of Beirut, where she managed complex pre- and post-award portfolios, donor reporting, partner capacity assessments, and audit and compliance processes. She began her career in the microfinance sector, building a strong foundation in financial analysis, portfolio performance, and fund management.

Irene Boghdadi

Technical Assistance Specialist, Chemonics Egypt

Irene is the Head of Entrepreneurship and MSMEs in Chemonics Egypt since 2014 and supports technical assistance activities at the MENA RIH. For the last 11 years, she focused on the intersection of technical and business aspects of clean technologies. She worked on multiple studies including market analysis, policy, technology, value chain and clusters analysis and development in various recycling and renewable energy sub-sector. She co-established Egypt’s first incubation, acceleration and growth management programs in the clean technology markets and has advised over 100 startups and MSMEs working in the water-energy-food nexus from technical aspects to investment readiness. Irene holds a MSc Degree in Masters of Energy Systems Management from the University of San Francisco.

Osama Mashagbeh

Enabling Environment Expert, Cewas

Osama is a WEF Systems Specialist with Cewas, bringing 10+ years of experience designing and implementing integrated solutions across water, food, and green development in the MENA region. His work bridges technical engineering with systems thinking, translating complex ecological and infrastructure challenges into actionable, scalable strategies. Currently serves as the Enabling Environment Lead for the Water and Energy for Food (WE4F) program, where he focuses on building the policy, institutional, and market conditions necessary for systemic change across the water-energy-food sectors.

Menna Sabry

Lead Technical Assistance Specialist, Chemonics Egypt

Ms. Sabry is a project manager at Chemonics Egypt’s Eco-industrial department (EID). She has experience in managing entrepreneurship support projects from project managing, to developing the project’s Standard Operations Procedures (SoPs) to conducting outreach campaigns to designing curricula to stakeholder engagement to conducting Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Activities (MEL). Additionally, Ms. Sabry has well-rounded experience in managing multiple stakeholders across various countries to guide them toward project success. Ms. Sabry holds a Master of Science in Sustainable Development (2015) and a Bachelor of Arts in Integrated Marketing Communications from the American University in Cairo (AUC) (2009).

Aline Assaf

Monitoring, Evalutation and Learning Manager, Berytech

Aline Assaf leads Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning for WE4F 2.0 MENA, overseeing the program’s results-based management framework across nine countries. She ensures that performance measurement, accountability, and learning are embedded across grants, technical assistance, investment readiness, and enabling environment components. Through a harmonized regional monitoring system aligned with multi-donor requirements and international standards, she strengthens transparency, consistency, and adaptive management across the consortium.
With over 15 years of experience in corporate environments and Business Management Systems (BMS), Aline brings strong expertise in governance, compliance, risk management, and quality assurance. She holds a degree in Business and Finance and is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP®) from the Project Management Institute (PMI), as well as a Certified Lead Quality Auditor (ISO 9001) accredited by CQI-IRCA.

Nashwan Dhahir

Syria Enabling Environment Expert, Cewas

Nashwan is a Water Resources Engineer and multidisciplinary Project Manager. He uses his collective +10 years of experience in WASH, water sector reforms, and business development processes to support resources management sector specific actors including entrepreneurs, SMEs, practitioners, and managers. His background and field of expertise enabled him to offer backstopping and coordination support in the Enabling Environment-related interventions. In addition to the coordination support that Nashwan offers to the Iraqi businesses in WE4F Program, he also supports them through improving on their marketing, managerial, financial, and operational aspects to catalyze healthier and more sustainable growth.

Anthony Chedid

Country Coordinator for Lebanon & Syria , Berytech

Country Coordinator for the Water & Energy for Food Program (WE4F), Anthony joined Berytech in 2020. He has previously served as Program Officer and as Business Advisor for several development programs. As part of his scope, he manages the portfolio of Lebanese SMEs and oversees WE4F’s operations in Syria. During his time at Berytech he has been exposed regionally, working throughout the MENA region, Africa, and South-East Asia. Anthony brings knowledge in value chains such as organic fertilizers and farming, food processing, renewable energy, and innovative water management. He provides tailored support to entrepreneurs and helps them reach their goals and milestones; all while supporting WE4F’s management team in reaching the overall mission of the program.
Anthony is an impact-oriented individual. Social and environmental solutions are what drive him, specifically combatting food security and climate change. Holder of a Master’s degree in Business Administration from ESCP Paris, and Ecole Superieure des Affaires, as well as a Bachelor’s in Business Science from the Lebanese American University, with emphasis on Hospitality & Tourism Management.

Sara Yasmine Benaskeur

Country Coordinator for Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco, Chemonics Egypt

Ms BENASKEUR is an impact entrepreneurship and sustainable development expert with over six years of experience in managing regional programs, supporting high-potential enterprises, and coordinating multi-stakeholder initiatives across North Africa.
Currently serving as Private Sector Advisor and Country Program Coordinator at Chemonics Egypt, she works on regional projects in Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco.
Her experience includes program coordination, the promotion and deployment of innovation initiatives, technical support to SMEs and SGBs (Small and Growing Businesses), as well as value chain analysis.
She holds a Master’s degree in Eco-Management and Sustainable Development and specializes in project management, capacity building, and the structuring of sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystems.

Amr Rizk

Country Coordinator, Chemonics Egypt

Mr. Rizk has a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from the University of Sheffield and Masters in Energy Engineering and Industrial Management from the same university. He joined Chemonics Egypt Consultants in 2021 as a Sustainable Energy Engineer. He has worked as a team leader, project coordinator, technical specialist, and market and policy researcher on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and agritech projects with various international partners, including the WBG, IFC, AfDB, EBRD and UNESCWA.

Mounes Neamat

Iraq Country Coordinator, cewas

Mounes holds a BSc. in electrical engineering and is Microsoft certified database and data analyst. He has a further certification in risk management. He contributes 11 years of experience in various industries (FMCG, banking, economic growth, entrepreneurship, and USAID projects experience) and has broad expertise in adapting to changing market needs, engaging with entrepreneurs and SME’s for technical and financial services and advisory services, including supply chain, marketing, and product development.

Semaan Jaffane

Grants and Finance Specialist, Berytech

Semaan is a Grants & Finance Specialist supporting the WE4F 2.0 MENA program. He oversees program budgeting, grant milestone validation and disbursements and the procurement/contracting of Technical Assistance, ensuring full compliance and accurate donor reporting across 9 MENA Countries.
He also supports Pre-Award Survey compliance, strengthens innovators’ governance through key policies (financial, HR, procurement), and delivers trainings on ethics and internal controls.
Before joining WE4F, Semaan built 10 years of banking experience as a Personal Banker at BLC Bank, specializing in SME/corporate lending, credit risk analysis, feasibility reviews, and AML due diligence.
He holds an MBA in International Marketing & Management and a BA in Business Science (Business & Marketing) from Antonine University and acquired several certificates including Business & Financial Modeling (University of Pennsylvania) and Lebanese Financial Regulations (ESA).

Pamela Saber

Investment Facilitation Manager, Berytech

Pamela Saber is the Investment Unit Manager at Berytech and leads the Investment Component under the WE4F 2.0 MENA Program. She previously led the investment facilitation component under WE4F 1.0, supporting SMEs in their investment readiness journey and contributing to the closure of multi-million-dollar investment transactions for climate-smart enterprises across the food, water, and energy sectors.
In her current role, Pamela supervises investment readiness and brokerage services for startups, scale-ups, and SMEs across Lebanon and the MENA region. She leads financial analysis, advanced financial modeling, valuation, due diligence preparation, data room structuring, and investor engagement, facilitating access to capital from DFIs, impact funds, VCs, PEs, family offices, and financial institutions.She has also contributed to the design and structuring of regional impact funds and has experience in developing innovative financing solutions tailored to the MENA region.
Since joining Berytech in February 2022, she has supported hundreds of SMEs throughout their investment journeys. Prior to Berytech, she spent nine years in corporate and SME banking at LGB Bank, managing a corporate portfolio and structuring over 100 SME financing transactions under EIB, Kafalat, and Central Bank programs.
Pamela holds a Master’s degree in Finance & Financial Institutions, is a Certified Management Accountant (CMA®), carries the Financial Modeling & Valuation Analyst (FMVA®) designation, and holds a Sustainable Investing certificate from Harvard Business School.

 Majd Alhaj Qasem

Jordan Country Coordinator, Cewas

Majd is an environmental and water management specialist with nearly a decade of experience across Jordan and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) región . She brings solid technical expertise in the water sector and environmental management systems, with a background spanning wastewater reuse, risk monitoring, climate action, and WASH. Majd has worked closely with international organizations, local communities, and government entities to advance sustainable practices. At CEWAS, she works as an entrepreneurship coordinator and coach, supporting green startups and actively engaging with ecosystem actors to foster innovation and collaboration.

Rasha Zayour

Monitoring, Evalutation and Learning Senior Officer, Berytech

Rasha currently serves as a Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Senior Officer at Berytech. She holds an architecture degree from the Lebanese American University, where she dedicated her academic journey to projects focused on enhancing conditions in refugee camps and slums across Lebanon, aiming to create sustainable solutions that address the unique challenges faced by these communities.
Before joining Berytech, Rasha worked as a Researcher and M&E Consultant with esteemed organizations and institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Beirut Urban Lab, IRC, UN-Habitat, and Deutsche Welthungerhilfe. Through roles spanning the built environment and socio-economic sectors, she contributed to projects via data analysis, surveying, and stakeholder engagement activities.

Lea Fayez

Communication & Learning Management Officer, Cewas

As the Communication & Learning Management Officer for WE4F 2.0 MENA program, Lea supports regional communication and knowledge management efforts, coordinating content, campaigns, and learning activities across the consortium. Her work focuses on strengthening innovator visibility, supporting onboarding and engagement processes, and ensuring clear, impact-driven messaging across water, energy, and food systems.
Lea holds a degree in Communication and brings over four years of experience in the humanitarian and development sectors, specializing in strategic communications, storytelling, and visibility management across multi-sector programs.

Aliaa Nasr

Country Coordinator, Chemonics Egypt

Aliaa joined Chemonics Egypt in 2022 as a Business Advisor in the Eco-Industrial Department, working within the agriculture sector to support SMEs through multiple development projects. She also served as Egypt Country Coordinator for WE4F
Since 2017, she has worked on and managed programmes in collaboration with USAID, IOM, and government entities across Egypt to empower vulnerable women and support vocational students in becoming entrepreneurs.
She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and an MBA in Entrepreneurship.

Eliane Mady

Investment Specialist, Berytech

Eliane is an Investment Specialist, supporting MENA companies through their investment-readiness journey with a focus on financial modeling, valuation, budgeting, and investor engagement. She prepares investor-ready materials including teasers, memoranda, and pitch decks; delivers investment-readiness trainings; and maps potential investors/financiers to enable targeted outreach. She also supports fundraising discussions, including term-sheet and valuation negotiation support.
Her role at Berytech began in 2023, following nine years in commercial lending where she structured loans and conducted credit analysis for small, medium, and large enterprises across diverse industries. She holds an MBA in Management and a BA in Banking & Finance.

Farida El Deib

Country Coordinator, Chemonics Egypt

Farida holds the role of a private sector consultant within the Eco-industrial division at Chemonics Egypt. She also serves as one of the program managers for the WE4F MENA hub’s technical assistance team, which is responsible for supporting technical aid initiatives within the MENA RIH. Over the past 7 years, she has been engaged as a governance advisor for both the public and private sectors, collaborating with GIZ and Save the Children International. Her primary areas of focus encompass organizational growth, policy formulation, and the facilitation of stakeholder interactions between governmental and private enterprises. Previously, she has fulfilled roles as a business developer and a technical analyst in the realm of the green economy sector. Farida holds a master’s degree in Business Leadership and Strategic Management from the Arab Academy for Science and Technology.
