Ivy Fitzsimmons is a senior soccer player and member of the Construction Crew. She took it upon herself to call local business and ask for donations to build a fence at the soccer fields that would save the Athletics Crew from having to forge through “Death Hill” (a downward slope next to the fields that is covered in brambles) to recover lost balls.

Ivy not only raised $4,000 to cover the costs, she also got her crew involved in running the fence installation the day of Work Day. She was honored by Katie Wurst, our Assistant Athletics Director, and her supervisor of four years, Doug Bradley with a speech and a plaque commemorating her contributions. The initiative and community mindset Ivy has shown speaks to the magic of Work Day at Warren Wilson and the valuable Work Learning Service opportunities students experience at work colleges.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

YELLOW SPRINGS, OHIO  3/14/2024 – Antioch College proudly announces its acceptance into the formal federal designation of Federal Work Colleges, marking a historic milestone for both the institution and the state of Ohio. Antioch College now joins a select cohort of only ten other work colleges nationwide, solidifying its commitment to experiential learning, community engagement, and preparing students for meaningful careers.

The Federal Work College designation, granted by the U.S. Department of Education, recognizes institutions that integrate work experience into their academic programs, fostering a unique and holistic approach to education. Antioch College’s inclusion in this prestigious group reinforces its dedication to providing students with a dynamic education that extends beyond the classroom. Other Federal Work Colleges include Berea and Warren Wilson Colleges, among others.

“Antioch College is the premier college for the applied liberal arts, where real-world work experience is fully integrated into the curriculum,” noted President Jane Fernandes. “This formal designation of Antioch as a Federal Work College will bring both new focus and added momentum to our campus and our community.”

As a Federal Work College, Antioch will build on its legacy of cooperative education and expand its campus student work program, Antioch College Works. These dual programs provide students with enhanced opportunities to engage in community collaboration, as well as gain professional skills and real-world experience. This approach aligns with the college’s mission to empower students to lead lives of purpose and impact, fostering a seamless transition from education to meaningful careers.

Luisa Bieri, Dean of Cooperative, International, and Community-based Learning, who led the application process, highlighted Antioch’s longstanding commitment to integrating work experience through the cooperative education program dating back to 1927. She expressed excitement about the Federal Work College designation, stating: “Antioch College has a long history of integrating meaningful work into the undergraduate experience, fostering a transformative education that our students have attested to for decades.”

“This designation affirms our place of national distinction within higher education,” Bieri added. “Through immersive experiential learning within our campus community as well as locally, nationally and internationally, Antioch students go into the world with a distinctive degree and practical experience of putting ideas into action.”

The Federal Work College designation is a testament to Antioch College’s dedication to innovation in education and its mission to prepare students for success in an ever-changing world. Antioch has earned distinction with over 100 years of co-op and over the past five years of building Antioch College Works thanks to the continued generosity of donors and granting organizations, including especially the Kettering Fund of Kettering Family Philanthropies and the Yellow Springs Community Foundation Miller Program. Antioch invites the community, alumni, and supporters to join in celebrating this significant accomplishment.

Alice Lloyd College alumna, Preston Spradlin, is an Appalachian native leading young men to success in college basketball. Spradlin grew up in Stanville, KY and graduated from Betsy Layne High School in 2005. Spradlin then attended ALC, where he graduated in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in history. At ALC, Spradlin competed in NAIA basketball for four years as a shooting guard for the ALC Eagles, honing his skills and continually developing his love and passion for the sport.

Spradlin continued his education and basketball career at the University of Kentucky after graduating from ALC. There, he earned a master’s in kinesiology and health promotion, with an emphasis is sports leadership, in 2011, while becoming a part of basketball legend John Calipari’s staff. Spradlin quickly rose through the ranks as an assistant for UK’s basketball program, holding numerous roles and becoming the university’s Assistant Director of Basketball Operations. During his tenure with UK, the basketball program experienced much success, which includes defeating Kansas 67-59 to win the 2012 NCAA Division I National Championship.

Spradlin left UK to take the role of Morehead State University men’s basketball’s assistant coach in 2014. He became the program’s interim head coach in 2016, nine games into the season, and helped the team that started 2-7 finish 12-9 with an overall record of 14-16. Morehead State then named Spradlin the men’s basketball head coach.

As head coach, Spradlin has led the Eagles to four straight twenty-win seasons with records of 23-8, 23-11, 22-12, and, most recently, 26-8. The Eagles are the wins leaders among Kentucky’s eight Division I programs over these past four seasons. Under his leadership, the Eagles have earned two appearances to the NCAA National Tournament. In the 2020-2021, Morehead’s team made the tournament for the first time since the 2010-11 season, and fell to a then No. 3 seeded West Virginia team. This year, the team notched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament by winning the Ohio Valley Conference.

Spradlin’s team boasts a 26-8 overall record this season, a record number of wins for the program, and is coming off a six-game winning streak. The Ohio Valley Conference title holders are 14-1 at home, 9-7 on the road, and 3-0 at neutral sites. Spradlin hopes to continue the program’s success, and recently inked a contract extension with Morehead that extends him through the 2026-2027 season.

Spradlin is grateful for Alice Lloyd College and the impact ALC has had on his life. When asked how the College prepared him for success, Spradlin praised the Student Work Program and said the work ethic taught along Caney Creek stuck with him. “Work! At ALC that is one of the most important things that you learn from day one- to be mature and responsible enough to balance your academics, athletics, work responsibilities and social life all while working towards your degree and the goals that you have beyond graduation.” The College’s help continued after his graduation in 2009, as Preston lived in ALC’s Caney Cottage on UK’s campus while pursuing his master’s degree.

Alice Lloyd College is proud of Spradlin for representing Appalachia and wishes him and his team success in the upcoming NCAA National Tournament.

BEREA, Ky. – Berea College Radio will soon be available on FM 91.7, thanks to a low-power FM license recently awarded by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

The license will allow Berea College to build an FM radio station by constructing an antenna and connecting it to a transmitter to broadcast. The new antenna will likely be built on top of the Computer Science, Digital Media and Information Technologies building, which will house the radio station as well.

“The FCC only opens FM application windows every few years or so, and we applied in December of 2023,” said Jacob Dickerson, Berea College professor and supervisor of Berea College Radio. “Before that, the last time the application window was open was 2013, so it’s a pretty rare thing to be able to get these licenses.”

The FM station will emit around 100 watts, translating to a 10-12 mile broadcast radius—more than enough to reach all of Berea. The new license also allows the Berea Radio team to move from their current model of online-only broadcasts to local FM radio.

The Berea College Radio team hopes the new license will make them more accessible and easier to find in the community, leading to more community-oriented programming.

The plan is to begin construction of the station as early as this summer, with a goal of FM broadcasting beginning this fall.

About Berea College

Berea College, the first interracial and coeducational college in the South, focuses on learning, labor and service. The College only admits academically promising students with limited financial resources, primarily from Kentucky and Appalachia, although students come from 45 states and 70 countries. Every Berea student receives a Tuition Promise Scholarship, which means no Berea student pays for tuition. Berea is one of nine federally recognized Work Colleges, where students work at least 10 hours a week to earn money for books, housing, and meals. The College’s motto, “God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth,” speaks to its inclusive Christian character. www.berea.edu.

BLACKBURN Beautification Day Reflects Blackburn’s Commitment to Hands-on Learning, Community Engagement, and SustainabilityBLACKBURN https://workcolleges.org/warren-wilson-college-professor-on-jeopardy/ Fri, 05 May 2023 09:28:00 +0000 https://dev2.trifectaky.com/workcolleges.org/?p=660 Being a Blackburn student has always meant more than just going to college. Being a Blackburn student has always meant more than just going to college. For more than a century, students attending Blackburn not only earn valuable four-year degrees but are also given responsibilities with on-campus jobs to build resumes with real-world work experience. The students help plan, manage and run the facilities – they are a living part of a college that is fully invested in them. But the relationship continues long after graduation. In an event as unique as the College itself, Beautification Day is a perfect example of how the bonds, connections, and relationships forged at Blackburn only grow stronger.

Now in its fifth year, Beautification Day joins alumni with students, faculty, and staff to work together on projects that enhance the beauty of the picturesque campus. Initially developed by Blackburn’s Alumni Association and administered in close cooperation with Nick McKorkle, Interim Director of Physical Plant; Grounds/Event Support Supervisor at Blackburn, and the College’s five-year landscaping plan, Beautification Day efforts touch all areas of the 80-acre campus grounds. And enthusiasm shows no signs of slowing down: 130 volunteers signed up for 2023, traveling from all corners of the country and lending a hand.

“This day was created by alumni, funded by alumni, organized by alumni, and implemented by alumni,” said Jeanna Supple ‘81, Blackburn alumna and co-chair of Beautification Day. She says Beautification Day raised over $12,000 this year, and more than $56,000 since the event began. But it isn’t just about donating – Supple has seen first-hand how the event and its success have grown and evolved as part of the team that conceived it. “Current students, faculty, and staff join alumni to make a difference on campus. The entire Blackburn family comes together on this wonderful day of cooperation and good works for the College.”

An event of this kind can only become so successful because of the uniqueness of Blackburn’s nationally recognized Work College, the only student-managed program in the country. As part of their academic program, students at Blackburn hold jobs across campus to make the institution run. Over the years, Blackburn students have literally built the College brick by brick, and the school enjoys the distinction of being the only campus in the United States to have been largely built by its students.

“Blackburn’s approach has made college affordable to thousands of first-generation students and working-class families,” said Alisha Kapp, Executive Director of Advancement & Alumni Relations at the College. “The Work Program made a transformational college degree possible and helped launch their careers. It’s only natural that alumni whose life experiences and successes are grounded in the values of campus service through work during their undergraduate education would want to continue that tradition. They welcome the annual opportunity to come back to campus to work.”

By far, the most significant project tackled for 2023 involved rebuilding the landscaping around two student residence buildings: Challacombe Hall and Graham Hall. Another project includes replenishing beautiful planters across the campus. Alums gifted these to the College during the inaugural event and overflow with flowers after each spring. Other annual projects include campus-wide painting, staining, mulching, planting, and refreshing hummingbird stations. Generous alum donations provide the supplies needed to make the event successful, and class challenges have enhanced the fun and funding through the years. With their labor, alums get a hands-on opportunity to engage with the current student community. And current students get more than an improved campus – volunteers can build critical connections with alums representing a variety of academic and professional fields.

Beautification Day benefits extend beyond the immediate enhancements to the campus grounds. Recognized annually since 2018 for its commitment to effective urban forest management, Beautification Day has been cited among initiatives that helped the college reach its goal of planting 115 trees three years ahead of schedule. With a long history of leading in sustainability, Blackburn is currently the only college or university in downstate Illinois and the St. Louis region to be named both Tree Campus USA and Bee Campus USA.

“We know of no other college in the nation that has a day like this,” said Noah Daum ‘18, Alumni Association Board Vice President and co-chair of Beautification Day. “Other college alumni donate money to the physical facilities, but nowhere else are the alumni coming back home to work.”

Blackburn is a college that not only espouses values but practices them. Beautification Day reflects the College’s commitment to hands-on learning, community engagement, and sustainability. It is a college that provides knowledge and relationships that last a lifetime.

Earlier this summer, Paul Quinn College debuted the first new buildings on its southern Dallas campus in more than four decades: a residence hall and a “wellness center” with athletics facilities.

The wellness center will be used by the historically Black college’s varsity cheer and dance teams as well as its basketball team, who will play on an extremely cool new court unveiled yesterday. It was designed by Ryan Parker of Free Key Three Creative. Photo above, more details after the jump.

Paul Quinn College says in a press release:

The new court features historical images of the Dallas skyline, including the winged Pegasus. The goal of the design is to highlight both the College’s and southern Dallas’ connection to the city.

The basketball court is housed in the new 1,100-person capacity Health & Wellness Center – the first new building on campus in almost 50 years. The facility will be used by Paul Quinn’s varsity basketball and cheer and dance teams, Health & Wellness majors and select community partners.

Naming rights for the basketball court are available as well as several other sponsorship opportunities. Interested organizations or individuals may reach out to Alexia Valencia, Development Associate for Paul Quinn at [email protected] for more details.

The school’s current gym, located near the campus’ WE Over Me Farm, will remain fully operational and will be used by the varsity volleyball team, intramurals, youth basketball teams, and for the Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III Global Preparatory Academy at Paul Quinn College and KIPP Oak Cliff Academy.
