Mayor Lurie creates new government position to raise private money for S.F.

Mayor Daniel Lurie’s So-Called Charter Reform - The Phoenix Project
The Phoenix Review offers news and commentary on the proposed right-wing takeover of San Francisco. Learn more about the billionaire agenda in short takes from the city’s savviest political observers.

Now Lurie is grasping for more power, looking to SPUR, the San Francisco Bay Area Planning and Urban Research Association, a conservative think tank for inspiration. SPUR was responsible for guiding urban renewal projects in the 1950s and 60s that saw the displacement of a once-thriving Black community in the city’s Fillmore District. Recently, SPUR issued Charter for Change, a scheme that Phoenix Project columnist Exavier Morrison-Wells describes as a scheme “to strip San Francisco governance of democratic friction.”

Lurie discovers affordability - 48 hills
But of course, that doesn’t mean taxing the billionaires

No surprise: Zohran Mamdani got elected mayor of New York talking about affordability. The politics of US cities is changing; the dynamic is moving from crime to rent. Something else is happening, too, in San Francisco. For decades, politics in this city have been defined by two basic camps: Corporate Democrats and Progressive Democrats. (Everyone in local politics is a Democrat). The Corporate Democrats are funded by, and generally support, the billionaires, big tech, finance and real estate. The Progressive Democrats are generally supported by grassroots organizing and labor.

Most SF Families Qualify for the City’s Free Subsidized Child Care, But Few Know About It
San Francisco expanded an existing program this week launched by former mayor London Breed that now provides free or deeply discounted child care to two-thirds of SF children five and under, but due to lack of public awareness, most eligible families still don’t know it exists.

Despite Lurie taking credit for the latest expansion, the Examiner reported in its November article that reserve funds already earmarked for the current expansion had been sitting in the bank since the measure passed in 2018, amounting to nearly $500 million after accrued interest. Per the Examiner, local and state officials had been urging the city throughout 2025 to release the funds and expedite the expansion.

The walkout at nearly 20 Kaiser hospitals and 200 clinics is set to begin Jan. 26, with no end in sight. A union leader warns of delayed or canceled surgeries and appointments.

Union representatives maintain that Kaiser can meet their demands given its profits and an estimated $66 billion in reserves.

Wiener reverses course, calls Israeli military operations in Gaza ‘genocide’
The Congressional candidate had declined to use the term during a debate earlier this month.

The Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club, which co-hosted the candidates’ forum event, said it supported Wiener’s new public position on the Israeli military action in Gaza. “We welcome Senator Wiener’s recognition of the genocide in Gaza, which is ongoing, and urge him to make amends with people and organizations he maligned for their advocacy in support of Palestinian lives,” the club said in a statement. “We also urge him to work with educators and civil rights organizations to undo AB 715, which weaponizes the definition of antisemitism to silence discussion in California schools about the genocide.”

Lawsuit over Rich Family Zoning Plan will test height limits, density—and CEQA - 48 hills
Does the plan violate environmental law—and what happens if the case succeeds in slowing the process?

Mayor Daniel Lurie’s Rich Family Zoning Plan—and the California Environmental Quality Act—will face a crucial test this spring in a San Francisco courtroom, and quite possibly, in the California Supreme Court. A broad coalition of neighborhood, small business, and housing groups has sued the city, arguing that the city failed to evaluating the impacts of the massive rezoning plan under the California Environmental Quality Act.

https://workerco.org/sf-dispatch-10-10-25/68e83e8af4c9430001deeee9Fri, 10 Oct 2025 19:56:31 GMTWelcome to the SF Dispatch, a daily newsletter round-up to save you some time catching up on the latest headlines from billionaire funded to independent news.

As the historian Robert Paxton argues in The Anatomy of Fascism, fascism is less a fixed ideology than a process that adapts to local traditions, forging coalitions with elites when conditions ripen; the forms change, the choreography repeats. Scholar Umberto Eco called it a “family resemblance”: habits that survive by wearing whatever costume a society will accept. In San Francisco, those habits are stitched from our civic self-image — competence, moderation, order — until efficiency becomes a polemic alibi.

The use of the word fascism to describe tendencies within our local government is a heavy one, and skepticism toward it is healthy. But Eco reminds us that one may name tendencies before uniforms appear. Once you know what to look for, the impulses are legible: Nostalgia for a purified past, obsession with crisis, vilification of dissent, contempt for weakness, and a manipulative moral vocabulary that renders complexity unspeakable. These are not abstractions; they describe how policy is narrated in San Francisco, where designed panic becomes emergency control and that control then becomes law.

“We need more people to get connected to folks who are tracking this escalation up close. The public needs to see how we’re taking care of business on the streets, how many are bravely showing up for the community,” they said. “The escalation is not a question of if, at this point. I believe it’s a question of when.”

The energy of people opposing immigration enforcement downtown stands in contrast to the relative inaction by city officials, including Mayor Daniel Lurie. While he has acknowledged the SF Rapid Response Network and attempted to take credit for some efforts, he has mostly remained quiet on Trump’s orders for mass deportation. Meanwhile, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has become outspoken on the issue. This week, he used an executive order to create “ICE Free Zones” in Chicago by prohibiting the use of city property in enforcement actions.

The chaos in Chicago and Portland is inspiring strategy among local activists

“We have to dramatically increase the cost of every single deportation in SF. Make the federal operation simply unsustainable. Make each deportation cost as much time and energy as the one today.”

The coalition is encouraging San Franciscans to attend the October 18th No Kings protest. SEIU 1021 President Theresa Rutherford told us there is a direct link between pro-democracy advocacy and the Airbnb boycott.

“Public resources are going to oligarchs and rich people who are super rich already, and it is clear that the federal budget is tied around cutting services to ordinary citizens… This is a microcosm of the bigger reality of a Trump administration. And so by holding Airbnb accountable, we’re literally messaging to folk that we all need to do that,” Rutherford said.

“San Franciscans, especially young people, are demanding bold solutions to today’s affordability and climate crises,” said Supervisor Jackie Fielder, co-founder of the San Francisco Public Bank Coalition. “A public bank is how we take our money back from Wall Street and reinvest it into housing, clean energy, and small businesses right here at home. This poll makes it clear: voters are ready for a Green Bank that works for the people, not for profit.” - 48 Hills

Across demographic groups, 67 percent favor the concept
“Unfortunately, the political will from our prior mayor and our current mayor is that they’ve been unwilling to spend that [Proposition C] money on housing,” Evans said. “Instead, they’ve focused on things like zoning alone, which basically creates the capacity for some future housing that may or may not appear.” - KQED
San Francisco Public Bank Supporters Eye 2026 Ballot Measure | KQED
San Francisco is laying the groundwork to become the first city in the country to have a municipal bank, with supporters exploring their next steps.

“We see the cost of living rising, and when it comes to affordable housing, zoning is just one part of it. What’s really missing is the financing piece,” said Supervisor Jackie Fielder, who has advocated for the public bank since before her election in 2024. “Not even market-rate housing developers are breaking ground on projects because there’s just not a market for it.”

Hollarsmith, a 33-year-old San Francisco native and a captain in the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was sailing to Gaza with humanitarian aid and supplies, has been detained by Israeli authorities since his boat was intercepted on Oct. 2 by Israeli naval forces. The San Francisco Chronicle first wrote about Hollarsmith’s journey on Oct. 5.

His mother has criticized officials at the state and national level for having done little to ensure that members of the flotilla return to the United States safely. On the local level, Hollar said, she has only been contacted by one elected official, District 9 Supervisor Jackie Fielder.
Gaza flotilla captain from S.F. to be released from Israeli prison
His mother, who’s been fighting for her son Logan Hollarsmith’s release from Israel, said only one San Francisco official reached out to her.

An Oct. 6 request for comment regarding Hollarsmith’s detention went unanswered by local officials including Mayor Daniel Lurie, and San Francisco Board of Supervisors President Rafael Mandelman, who represents Noe Valley, where Hollarsmith is from and where Hollar has long resided.

Today's featured story covers Rainbow Grocery - putting ideals of sustainable living into practice since 1975

But the customers, Edgar thinks, sense the difference from regular grocery stores: Without top-heavy corporate control, the power balance shifts, and the relationship with store staff feels less transactional. Not everyone who shops there knows about the cooperative structure, but enough do that the dynamic shifts. “I actually do feel like the customers are a little more scared of us than they would be at a normal store,” he says. “Because they kind of know there's not some boss they can just appeal to. And I'm not saying it's good— I'm not saying they should fear us.” But, he noted, back in the day, when the store was smaller and the community more close-knit, customers treating staff like servants instead of fellow community members “led to a LOT of friction” — to put it nicely.

Bay Area Co-ops: ‘A Bunch of Weirdos’ Run a Grocery Store
Staff at San Francisco’s Rainbow Grocery reflect on collectivity, retail personhood, and an aesthetic disagreement that ended in a fistfight.

At Whole Foods, customers treated them like a computer: where is this, show me that, no greeting. At Rainbow, people say hello, ask Medrano how they’re doing, and share with pride that they've been shopping there for 20 years. Medrano has watched babies in strollers grow into toddlers. On Father's Day, they wished a customer well. “That's the sort of thing that would be weird at a normal retail grocery store,” they said.

A San Francisco supervisor has proposed that police and other city agencies should have no financial consequences for breaking a landmark surveillance oversight law. In 2019, organizations from across the city worked together to help pass that law, which required law enforcement to get the approval of democratically elected officials before they bought and used new spying technologies. Bit by bit, the San Francisco Police Department and the Board of Supervisors have weakened that law—but one important feature of the law remained: if city officials are caught breaking this law, residents can sue to enforce it, and if they prevail they are entitled to attorney fees. - via EFF
