Having problem with your current web hosting or about to start a new website and wondering which hosting company to trust your website with?
We will tell you which hosting company you can trust and the one you should avoid at all costs.

We separated this article in two parts, first the Web Hosting Services to avoid and in the second part the one we recommend.

You might be interested to check the one we advise you to avoid especially if you are already own a website and already pay a web hosting company.

Have you heard of Bluehost, Hostgator, Hostmonster?

I bet you have, those web hosting services are all owned by a certain company named Endurance International Group (EIG) Hosting

They own 70+ web hosting companies. ( Check the full list here )

EIG focuses on buying web hosting companies which helps them increase their customer base. The acquired companies continue to operate under their established brand names and do not try to publicize that they are owned by EIG, which can result in the following scenario:

  • A dissatisfied customer leaves EIG host number 1 and goes in search of a new host.
  • The customer searches for the term best web host on Google and comes across top 10 lists consisting of mostly other EIG hosting brands (unbeknownst to the customer).
  • The customer decides to go with EIG host number 2. The end result is EIG has not lost this customer!
  • Rinse and repeat, until the customer does some more in depth research, and discovers a list of all EIG web hosting companies.

Their servers are bad quality and the support is the worst you can get.

We also don’t recommend “Godaddy”, all our customers that use them had bad experience with their services and customer support.

Avoiding Disappointment: Non EIG Hosting (Choose a Web Host Not Owned by EIG) by checking the second part of this article.

The button will start buffering, after the download and installation is done the button will change to an Activate button, click it to activate the plugin.

Web hosting services you can trust.

Often overlooked, web hosting is one of the key components of every successful website. Choosing the best WordPress hosting for your needs can improve your SEO and increase sales. In fact a cheap WordPress hosting costs 30x more than you think (see the math)

What matters to get a good position in Search Results is the loading speed of your website, the web hosting services we recommend may not be the cheapest but will assure an incredible loading speed.

1. Cloudways, for people that start a new business ( Low budget )

If you have a low budget but still need a Web Hosting for a WordPress site or other applications Cloudways is what you need.

They are a bit more expensive that low cost hosting services but they offer free SSL and CDN, and their servers quality is really better than any low budget hosting services you can find. Their support is also top notch.

How to Install a WordPress Plugin – Step by Step https://wpbuilders.co/step-by-step-guide-to-install-a-wordpress-plugin/ https://wpbuilders.co/step-by-step-guide-to-install-a-wordpress-plugin/#respond Thu, 12 Dec 2019 15:36:45 +0000 https://wpbuilders.co/?p=9755 The post How to Install a WordPress Plugin – Step by Step appeared first on WPBuilders.

If you are using WordPress at a certain point you will probably want to use a plugin, in this guide we will explain how to install free and premium plugins.

There is two type of plugins, free and premium plugins.
We will explain how to install both.

If you want to use a Free plugin then the easiest way to install it is by using the plugin search feature.

This works only for plugins that are inside the WordPress Plugin Directory ( free plugins ).

If you want to install a premium / paid plugin start here.

When you are logged in your WordPress dashboard go to Plugins > Add New

Then on the Top right, you will be able to search the plugin you want to install.

A list of plugin will appear, click the Install Now button to install the plugin.

autoptimize installation

The button will start buffering, after the download and installation is done the button will change to an Activate button, click it to activate the plugin.

activate plugin

That’s all, you have successfully installed your first WordPress plugin!

The next step is to configure the plugin settings. These settings will vary for each plugin therefore we will not be covering that in this post.

The plugin we installed is the Autoptimize plugin, we recommend it to optimize your website performance, you can learn more about it in this article.

Premiums plugins.

1. Using the WordPress Admin plugin upload.

Premiums / Paid plugins are not listed in the WordPress plugin directory but don’t worry, you can still install these really easily.

First you need to prepare the “zip” file of your plugin, when you have it ready then go to your WordPress dashboard then go to

Plugins > Add New

After navigating to Plugins > Add New, click on the Upload plugin button located at the top left of the page.

add upload new plugin

Click Choose file and select your plugin zip file you prepared earlier.

select envato-market.zip file

Then click the Install Now button and when prompted click the Activate Plugin link.

installation of envato market plugin

Now that the plugin is installed and activated ( if you didn’t activated the plugin after installing it you can activate it from Plugins > Installed Plugins ).

The plugin we used in our example is the “Envato Market plugin“, if you are using a theme or a plugin from the Envato marketplace then you might want to check this article to learn how to activate auto update for your items.

2. Using the FTP upload.

Sometimes your WordPress Hosting provider may have file restrictions that could limit your ability to install / upload a plugin from the admin area.

If it is the case, the best way to install a plugin is manually using FTP.

Though, the FTP method is the least friendly for beginners, we recommend you to contact your Hosting provider and ask them to change your server settings in order to be able to use the first method ( WordPress admin plugin upload

First you need to to extract the zip file of the plugin on your computer.

Extracting the plugin zip file will create a new folder with the plugin name ( sometime it differs ). This is the folder that you need to manually upload to your website using a FTP client.

You would need to access your host through the FTP manager. If you don’t know your FTP username and password, then contact your WordPress hosting provider and ask them.

Then you need a FTP client, if you don’t have one we recommend FilleZilla.

Open your FTP client ( FileZilla ) on your computer and connect to your website using the login credentials provided by your web host. Once connected, you need to access the path /wp-content/plugins/

Next, upload the folder you extracted from the zip file to the /wp-content/plugins/ folder on your web server.

ftp upload

After uploading the files, you will be able to activate the plugins from WordPress dashboard Plugins > Installed Plugins.

You should see the plugin you uploaded in the list waiting to be activated.

installed plugin activation

Click the Activate button to activate the plugin.

That’s all, you have successfully installed a plugin via FTP.

Conclusion

If you are using paid / premiums plugins we recommend you to use the WordPress admin plugin upload, if you get an error see with your web hosting to change the server settings in order to be able to upload files.

For free plugin the WordPress Plugin search should be enough but sometimes free plugin are not in the WordPress plugin directory so if you can’t find the plugin try to check their official site.

You have a website but it is running slowly or poorly? You might be able to speed up your website loading time using the awesome Autoptimize plugin

Speed Up your website with Autoptimize, it makes optimizing your site really easy. It can aggregate, minify and cache scripts and styles, injects CSS in the page head by default but can tricky to set up depending the theme you are using. We will explain the settings we recommend to get a correctly optimized website.

1. Install Autoptimize

First, you will need to install and activate the Autoptimize plugin.

Go to Plugins > Add new, then from the search bar, search for Autoptimize, install and activate it.

autoptimize installation

After activating the plugin, go to Settings  > Autoptimize page to configure the plugin.

Settings > Autoptimize

2. Configuring settings.

Now that you are on the settings page you need to make sure that you are able to see the “Advanced settings”, click on “Show advanced settings“.

show advanced settings

Now that you can see the advanced settings, let’s get started with the main settings.

HTML Options

Only select the “Optimize HTML Code?” checkbox, that’s it we are done with the HTML options.

HTML options

Javascript Options

Javascript options are a little more complicated.

RED options are the one that usually work for all themes, but if you have problem after finishing doing this tutorial ( website looking strange ) then :

  1. First “Clear the cache
  2. Try to activate the BLUE options then again “Clear the cache
Javascript options

CSS Options

CSS Options are pretty straight forward, you only need to activate the two first checkbox.

The other options really depends on how your pages and which theme and plugins you are using but the most important are the first two options.

CSS options

CDN Options

If your are trying to optimize your site and you are trying to target a worldwide audience or if the country you are targeting is not the same country where you server is located then you need a CDN.

If you are using a decent web hosting it should provide a free CDN.

For example Kinsta, WPengine and Siteground provide free CDN with their default hosting plan, contact their support and ask for the CDN Base URL to set this settings.

If you are using a private CDN, then you should be able to get the CDN base url from the dashboard where you bought the CDN.

CDN options

Extra Options

Extra settings, regarding google fonts we recommend the webfonts.js solution to load fonts asynchronously.

If you are not using WordPress emojis then we recommend to Remove them.

For the Query strings it is only important if you are caring about GTmetrix results or similar “score” websites.

Extra settings

Conclusion

If you theme and plugins you are using are well programmed those settings should boost your site loading speed!

If you are having issue with the site render make sure to check the “Javascript Options” part ( Blue options ) and be sure to Clear the cache after settings the plugin.

If you still have speed problem after setting Autoptimize, you might want to use a better theme like our best sellers Cesis & Thefox.

The easiest way to boost your website speed is to use a powerful web hosting try Kinsta or Siteground if you are on a lower budget.

Leave us a comment if you have problems or questions about Autoptimize settings.

You have made changes to your site but you don't see the modification when checking the frontend of your site?
You have probably a cache problem, in this article we will explain how to clear your browser, server and plugin cache.

If you have a WordPress site you want to have a caching solution to improve your site performance.

Managed WordPress hosting providers like Kinsta run their own caching solutions, so that you don’t have to install a caching plugin.

The other solution is to use caching plugin like W3 Total Cache or WP Super Cache.

Let’s get started and see how to clear cache for your browser, plugin and server.

1. Clear your browser cache

First, you need to clear your web browser cache. Web browsers store static content like images, stylesheets, JavaScript etc from a website to make your subsequent visits faster.

The problem is that sometimes web browsers fail to realize that a web page has changed. Instead of fetching a fresh copy, they may still reload the page from the cached version store on your computer.

Using Google Chrome

  1. Click the 3 dots on the top right of the browser
  2. Go to More tools > Clear browsing data.
  3. Set the Time range to All times.
  1. Set the Time range to All times.
  2. Select :
    • Cookies and other sites data
    • Cached images and files
  3. Click Clear data.

Using Firefox

  1. From the History menu, select Clear Recent History
  1. From the Time range to clear: drop-down menu, select Everything.
  2. Then check the Cookies and Cache boxes.
  3. Click Clear now

To Clear only one page.

If you need to clear the cache of only one of your pages then you can do an hard refresh of the page.

On Windows : Hold down Ctrl and press F5.
On Mac/iOs : hold down ⌘ Cmd and ⇧ Shift key and then press R.

2. Clear Cache of Your WordPress Caching Plugin

If you are using a WordPress caching plugin on your site, then you need to also clear your plugin cache. Most caching plugins allow you to easily do that from their settings page.

Clear Cache in W3 Total Cache

If using W3 Total Cache ( one of the most popular WordPress caching plugin ) head over to Performance » Dashboard page and click on “empty all caches” button.

W3 total cache clear cache

This will remove all the cache of W3 Total Cache, if you still don’t see the modification then try to also clear the browser cache.

Clear Cache in WP Super Cache

If using WP Super Cache ( an other well known WordPress caching plugin ) head over to Settings » WP Super Cache page and click on “Delete Cache” button.

wp super cache clear cache

This delete all the cache of WP Super cache, after deleting the cache if you still don’t see the modification you made try to also clear the browser cache.

3. Clear Cache on Managed Hosting ( Kinsta / WPengine )

Kinsta and WPengine run their own caching solution, so their customers don’t need to install a caching plugin.

Clear cache with :

Clear Cache with Kinsta

With Kinsta when logged in the WordPress dashboard, from the right from the admin bar. You can clear the cache by clicking “Clear cache“.

Kinsta clear cache top bar

You can also add custom paths to purge whenever your site is updated.

Kinsta clear cache

You can also manually clear WordPress cache from within the MyKinsta dashboard. Simply click on your site, click into tools and click on the “Clear Cache” button.

Kinsta dashboard clear cache

Clear Cache with WPengine

You need to click on the WPEngine menu item in the admin bar and then under ‘General’ settings click on purge all caches button.

WP engine clear cache

Conclusion

Until you are done creating / modifying your website you shouldn’t use a cache plugin.

Cache plugins may be hard to configure correctly depending the theme you are using, this is why we recommend to use Kinsta if you are not familiar with WordPress and want a fast and stable website.

You have set up your new site with your WordPress theme and would like to add a search option to your navigation menu?

With WordPress, you have the possibility to add a search feature on your website sidebar, footer, and other widget ready areas, but unfortunately you can not add one in your menu.

In this article, we will show you how to easily add a search bar to your WordPress menu using a single plugin and without having to code anything.

Adding the Search Bar to the Main Navigation

First, you will need to install and activate the Ivory Search plugin.

Go to Plugins > Add new, then from the search bar, search for Ivory Search plugin, install and activate it.

Then from the “Form Style” tab, select the style of the search form. If you just want a search icon next to your menu select the dropdown style.

Edit the search function ( Optional )

Go to Ivory Search > Search Forms page to create or edit the search option.

You don’t need to create a new form since the plugin automatically adds the default search form.

The plugin search settings allow you to select which content of your website should be included in the search results.

The ‘Includes’ section lets you select which content should be included in the search query. You need to review the options and click the Save Form button.

Next, the opposite, the ‘Excludes’ section lets you define the content that you don’t want to show in search results. Once done, click the Save Form button again to save your settings.

If you want a instant search feature, then click on the AJAX section, there you can enable the AJAX search ( Instant search ).

The ‘Options’ section lets you define how many results to show per search page, the order of the results and highlight feature.

Better Design.

Unfortunately this plugin may not give you good result depending the theme you are using.

If you have CSS and HTML knowledge, then you should be able to modify the form to get better result.

If you don’t know how to code then you might want to opt for a premium theme.

Most of the premium themes give you the possibility to add a “Search” option to your theme menus.

The following theme Cesis & TheFox have a powerful theme options panel that let you choose where you want to add a search form in one-click and easily let you edit the search form visual.

Conclusion

You should be able to add the search form to your menu if you followed this tutorial but you may need to modify the css / theme to get a design that fits your current theme.
