HOUSTON and DALLAS, Texas – July 30, 2025 – Houston-based Calpine Corporation today announced a new 190-megawatt (MW) agreement with Dallas-based CyrusOne, a leading global data center developer and operator, to serve a new data center adjacent to the Thad Hill Energy Center in Bosque County, Texas. The deal secures power, grid connection, and land to support a new state of the art facility that is currently under construction and expected to be operational by the fourth quarter of 2026.

“We’re excited to be a partner in this project to deliver cutting-edge data center infrastructure to Texas, bringing jobs, innovation, and economic growth to the region,” said Rick Peña, Executive Vice President of Corporate Development at Calpine. “This first-of-its-kind project establishes Calpine as a leader in reliable, scalable power solutions for hyperscale customers, leveraging our world-class fleet and Powered Land Capabilities (“PLC”) along with a suite of products and services to support both customer needs and grid reliability across ERCOT and beyond.”

The campus, named DFW10, is being constructed by CyrusOne, which is backed by leading investment firms Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), a part of BlackRock, and KKR. The new multiphase data center campus will encompass more than 190,000 square feet in the first phase, with scalable capacity to meet future demand. With a focus on sustainability and reliability, the new CyrusOne campus will feature climate-neutral initiatives, water conservation, biodiversity protection, and capabilities to respond during ERCOT grid emergencies. The project represents a $1.2 billion infrastructure investment.

CyrusOne is set to capitalize on Calpine’s newly developed PLC suite of products and services.

“We’re proud to be part of this landmark project, which combines dedicated power and data center expertise to deliver a unique, mission-critical solution to our customers,” said John Hatem, Chief Operating Officer at CyrusOne. “As AI drives unprecedented data demand, this campus demonstrates our commitment to delivering scalable, reliable infrastructure for our Intelliscale® customers while supporting grid reliability for consumers and businesses in Texas and beyond.”

“For decades, Calpine has been the premier power solutions provider for industrial-scale customers who need unwavering reliability, scalable capacity, and proven operational expertise,” said Mr. Peña. “Our world-class fleet is designed to support fast-paced development and PLC, along with the substantial data center load currently served by our affiliate, Calpine Solutions, puts those capabilities to work for hyperscale customers on the cutting edge.”

To commemorate the agreement, Calpine and CyrusOne will hold a ceremony this autumn at the site.

“This partnership is a win for Bosque County and for Texas. By bringing together world-class energy infrastructure and cutting-edge data center development, Calpine and CyrusOne are helping to power the future while investing in rural communities like ours,” said State Representative Angelia Orr. “I’m proud to support innovative projects like this that bring jobs, strengthen our grid, and keep Texas at the forefront of economic growth and technology.”

Calpine’s ~9,000 MWs of generation and wholesale and retail platform in ERCOT will be capable of delivering up to 400 MWs to data centers located in Bosque, Texas. This PLC solution offers a powerful combination of scale, reliability, and generation capacity  for large-load, mission-critical users such as data center operators, and this agreement further cements Calpine’s role as a strategic energy partner to hyperscale data centers while supporting reliability for all Texans and the ERCOT grid.

“I am grateful to our employees and Board of Directors for entrusting me with the opportunity to lead Calpine at such a pivotal moment for the power industry,” said Novotny. “I would also like to recognize Thad’s support and mentorship over the years. Under his leadership, Calpine has excelled at navigating changing markets, and with demand growing at record rates, we have the right mix of talents and assets to deliver reliable power for a sustainable future. (HOUSTON, Texas) – August 22, 2024 – Calpine is accelerating its PJM electricity generation development program following market signals indicating higher demand for reliable power. This effort includes exploring multiple new locations in the PJM region, particularly in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Calpine is also exploring potential expansion of its existing fleet.

“When more electricity generation capacity is needed and reserves begin to tighten, a well-designed competitive market sends the appropriate signals to generators to spend capital on both new and existing sources. We received that message loud and clear,” said Caleb Stephenson, Calpine EVP Commercial Operations. “Over the past 10 years, competitive generators have brought online nearly 31,000 MW of new gas-fired generation in the PJM region without a single penny of ratepayer dollars being at risk, including over 1,600 MW built by Calpine last decade.”

“The PJM market needs and values reliable, dispatchable, non-duration-limited power, and in response we are restarting our PJM development efforts. We are focusing on locations in Ohio and Pennsylvania, although clarity regarding state-level air emissions regulations is needed for projects to move forward in Pennsylvania.”

“Similarly, after seeing positive market signals, we restarted development efforts last year in Texas, where we are now on track to add over 1,000 MW of generation to our Texas fleet over the coming years. We are increasing staffing and are looking forward to bringing more generation online in PJM as well,” added Stephenson.

(SUTTER COUNTY, California) – August 7, 2024 – Today, Calpine announced that it has executed a cost share agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) for the Sutter Decarbonization Project, a full-scale carbon capture demonstration project at its Sutter Energy Center. The Sutter Decarbonization Project will be designed to capture 95% of carbon dioxide emissions enabling the Sutter Energy Center to produce firm, dispatchable, low-carbon electricity. Calpine will now commence the first phase of the DOE cooperative agreement, with other phases to follow upon successful completion of Phase 1 and finalization of plans for subsequent phases.

“We are pleased to have reached this milestone in the development of our Sutter Decarbonization Project. This initial Phase 1 commitment by the DOE will support the engineering and design of the project, further our community engagement, and advance project planning,” said Alex Makler, Calpine’s Senior Vice President, West Region. “We are grateful to be working together with the local community and elected officials in Sutter County and Yuba City and are pleased to have their continued support.”

Calpine has been in the Sutter community for over two decades, working with the local community and elected officials to host tours and engage with community stakeholders. Makler added that “Calpine is also appreciative of the diligence and commitment of our partners at ION Clean Energy and 1PointFive Sequestration in achieving this milestone and working toward a successful project.”

Calpine is collaborating with the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) to support its 2030 Zero Carbon Plan through the Sutter Decarbonization Project. “We are pleased to be working with SMUD and are excited about the opportunity to assist SMUD in meeting its climate goals,” said Makler. “For decades, SMUD has been a leader in clean energy and carbon reduction,” said SMUD Chief Executive Officer & General Manager Paul Lau. “Through innovative partnerships like the Calpine Sutter Decarbonization Project, we’re moving boldly toward our goal of zero carbon emissions while setting the standard for low rates, reliable service and an equitable clean energy future with benefits that every community can share in.”

Like all major Calpine projects in California, the Sutter Decarbonization Project will be constructed with a Project Labor Agreement. “We are deeply appreciative of the support the State Building and Construction Trades Council of California has provided in reaching this important milestone,” said Makler. “While many steps remain, this collaboration underscores our shared focus to leading the energy transition and helping our state achieve its bold emissions goals.”

In addition to the Sutter Decarbonization project, Calpine recently advanced its similarly sized Baytown Decarbonization Project in Baytown, TX, which executed the first phase of its cost sharing agreement with OCED that will help advance that project as well. “Calpine is grateful for the DOE’s commitment to working with Calpine to advance this important technology and believes that this is a recognition of the quality and strength of Calpine’s CCS program,” said Makler.

The Baytown Decarbonization Project is designed to capture 95% of CO2 emissions from two of the three turbines at the company’s Baytown Energy Facility, enabling the facility to produce firm, dispatchable, low-carbon electricity as well as steam for collocated industrial use. Calpine will now commence the first phase of the DOE cooperative agreement, with other phases to follow upon successful completion of phase one and finalization of plans for subsequent phases.

“We are pleased to have reached another milestone in the development of our Baytown Decarbonization Project. This initial Phase 1 commitment by the DOE will support the engineering and design of the project, further our community engagement, and advance project planning,” Caleb Stephenson, Calpine’s Executive Vice President of Commercial Operations.

“This marks an important step forward for the Baytown CCS Project,” added Stephenson. “While there remain many milestones ahead, this step demonstrates Calpine’s continued commitment to being a leader in the energy transition in general and in carbon capture technology in particular. Calpine looks forward to continuing its partnership with the DOE as we work toward decarbonization of facilities like the Baytown Energy Center, which will be a critical part of our energy infrastructure for the foreseeable future and play a key role in decarbonizing our nation’s industrial sector.” Stephenson said.

In addition to the company’s Baytown project, Calpine continues to advance its similarly sized Sutter Decarbonization Project in California, which is negotiating an agreement with OCED that will help advance that project as well. “Calpine is grateful for the DOE’s commitment to working with Calpine to advance this important technology and believes that this a recognition of the quality and strength of Calpine’s CCS program,” said Stephenson.

(HOUSTON, Texas) – February 27, 2024 – The Board of Directors (Board) at Calpine Corporation (Calpine), one of America’s largest integrated competitive power companies, shared details of a planned leadership transition effective October 1, 2024. The Board has selected Andrew Novotny, Calpine’s President and Chief Operating Officer, to succeed Thad Hill as the Company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Hill, who has served as CEO for ten years, will assume the role of Executive Chairman of the Board.

“I have been fortunate to have worked with Andrew since he joined Calpine in 2012,” said Hill. “He has played a major role in our financial growth and has been a thought leader in both our long-term strategic vision and tactical decisions. I am confident Andrew is exceptionally well-suited to assume the role of CEO and I am excited about what that means for the future of Calpine.”

Since going private in 2018, in a deal lead by Energy Capital Partners along with the Canadian Pension Plan Investment Board and Access Industries, Calpine has enjoyed a time of financial success and growth. In addition to providing reliable and affordable generation, Calpine has expanded its wholesale and retail customer-facing businesses and has embarked on a new development program including not only its core generation business but also zero carbon efforts including expansion at The Geysers, its geothermal generation facilities, as well as large-scale battery storage and carbon capture and sequestration projects.

Novotny joined Calpine in 2012 and has served as Calpine’s President since May 2023, when he expanded his role as the Company’s Chief Operating Officer, a position he has held since January 2021. In his new role, Novotny will continue to be responsible for the Company’s operations and will assume the other duties customarily carried out by CEOs. Before joining Calpine, Novotny served as Vice President of Financial Gas and Power Trading for the BG Group and Vice President at Duke Energy. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Vanderbilt University, graduating magna cum laude with high honors in Economics. He also received a Master of Business Administration from Rice University, where he was named a Jones Scholar.

“I am gratified and humbled by the Board’s selection of me to succeed such an accomplished leader,” said Novotny. “I am most grateful to Thad for setting an example as a disciplined and effective leader, and to the Board for its confidence in me to further advance the strategy Thad and the team have created. I am looking forward to leading this great Company and our world-class workforce as we advance our vision of being the premier integrated power company in the U.S.”

Hill, in his new role as Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors, will continue to work with Novotny on issues important to the Company, contribute to the development of the Calpine’s long-term strategic plan and provide Board leadership.

Calpine’s Baytown Decarbonization Project will capture approximately two million metric tons of carbon dioxide for permanent sequestration each year

HOUSTON, TX (DECEMBER 14, 2023) – Today, Calpine announced that its Baytown Decarbonization project has been selected by the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations within the Department of Energy (DOE) to negotiate to enter into a cost-sharing agreement to build a commercial-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) project that will capture and store approximately two million metric tons of carbon dioxide each year. In a related announcement, DOE also selected Calpine’s carbon capture project at its Sutter Energy Center in California. These decisions validate and accelerate Calpine’s work as an industry leader advancing CCS infrastructure, support private investment in CCS, protect good-paying clean energy jobs, build on Calpine’s strong community partnerships, and foster momentum of Calpine’s CCS program. The parties expect to negotiate the terms of agreement over the coming months.

Following on the success of several pilot programs focused on testing advanced CCS technologies, the DOE is administering the Carbon Capture Demonstration Projects Program to significantly improve the efficiency, effectiveness, environmental performance, and scale of CCS systems.

Located in Baytown, Texas, the Baytown Energy Center is an existing 896-megawatt natural gas combined heat and power facility that provides steam and power to the adjacent Covestro chemicals manufacturing facility as well as power to the Texas electric grid. Adding post- combustion carbon capture equipment to this facility will reduce the carbon dioxide emissions intensity of two of its three combustion turbines at a design capture rate of 95%, resulting in low CO2 steam and power for chemicals manufacturing and power for the electric grid. After being captured, the CO2 will be permanently sequestered.

“We are very pleased and honored that the DOE has recognized the quality of this project and the strength of Calpine’s CCS program,” said Thad Hill, CEO of Calpine Corporation. “We are looking forward to working with the DOE to finalize the cost-sharing agreement and with our other stakeholders to advance the development of the Baytown Decarbonization Project. Carbon capture is an important technology for decarbonizing the electricity sector and the economy. Calpine is very grateful for the commitment and support for the project by our stakeholders.”

The Baytown Energy Center is located near other significant CO2 sources in the heavy industrial Houston Ship Channel area and is proximate to multiple developing CO2 storage resources along the Texas Gulf Coast. Moving forward with this project will foster momentum and infrastructure and for broader carbon reductions in the area.

“Cogeneration facilities like Baytown provide firm, dispatchable, non-duration-limited electric and steam supply to reliably power the electric grid and industry. Facilities like Baytown will be part of our energy infrastructure for the foreseeable future, and now with CCS technology, we can decarbonize them. Calpine would like to thank the DOE as well as our state and local officials and community partners for their ongoing support,” said Caleb Stephenson, Calpine EVP Commercial Operations. “We look forward to continuing our work with the federal government and the communities in which we operate on the next phase of our company’s longstanding role in the energy transition.”

The Baytown facility’s customer and site host, Covestro, voiced its support for the project. This is a critical step towards decarbonizing Calpine’s facility, which is located on our Covestro Baytown site,” said Demetri Zervoudis, Covestro head of operations for North America and Baytown site general manager. “Carbon capture and storage technology is an important tool for the chemical industry to reduce carbon emissions, and it is encouraging to see Calpine at the forefront of this transition.”

The Baytown Decarbonization Project is being developed in partnership and consultation with local stakeholders in East Houston. As part of the development process, Calpine will continue robust efforts to provide local community benefits such as expanding the number of full-time local jobs, enhancing workforce development programs (including opportunities for apprentices), targeting procurement with diverse and small business enterprises, and working with local K-12 schools and Minority-Serving Institutions. These benefits reflect Calpine’s long-standing history and commitment to the communities in which Calpine operates.
