El Paso County, Colorado, March 17, 2026 – The American Public Works Association (APWA) has selected El Paso County’s Department of Public Works (DPW) as a 2026 recipient of the Excellence in Snow and Ice Control Award, recognizing the County’s comprehensive and data-driven winter operations program.

The national recognition reflects sustained performance across a 2,130-square-mile service area and 4,400 lane miles of roadway, where crews respond to an average of 24 plowable snow events each year and clear more than one million lane miles annually.

This award represents the consistent, professional work our snow fighters deliver year after year,” said Jack Ladley, Executive Director of El Paso County Public Works. “Our team combines strong training, proven technology, and disciplined operations to provide reliable service for residents while being responsible stewards of public resources.

Examples of the high standard the Department consistently delivers for the residents of El Paso County include:

  • Advanced technology and transparency: Every plow truck and grader is equipped with Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) and telematics systems that track route progress and material application in real time. This data supports operational decision-making and powers the County’s public dashboard, allowing residents to view near real-time plow activity during storms.
  • Efficient responsible operations: Automated material application controls and pre-treatment strategies have reduced salt usage by approximately 20 percent, improving efficiency and lowering costs.
  • Strong workforce preparation: Each fall, the Department conducts “Snow School,” a comprehensive training program for operators, mechanics, and supervisors to ensure equipment readiness and consistent winter response practices.
  • Ongoing infrastructure investment: In 2024, DPW completed a $1.5 million stormwater-control upgrade at its largest maintenance facility, improving runoff treatment and strengthening long-term system reliability.

The APWA award will be formally presented at the 2026 North American Snow Conference in April.

Our responsibility doesn’t end with one season or one award,” Ladley said. “We’re committed to continually improving how we maintain the County’s roads – investing in our people, refining our processes, and using data and technology to deliver dependable service for the community year after year.”

March 3, 2026 – The El Paso County Board of County Commissioners received an update on quarterly sales tax revenues during its regular meeting this week, presented by Chief Financial Officer Nikki Simmons.

The update provided an overview of current sales tax performance, revenue trends, and year-to-date collections compared to prior years and budget projections.

County sales tax revenues continue to reflect stable economic activity across El Paso County. Sales and use tax collections for 2025 are ending the year approximately 2 percent higher than 2024, demonstrating steady year-over-year growth. Collections for the most recent quarter were consistent with financial forecasts, supporting ongoing county operations and essential public services.

“Sales tax revenue remains a key indicator of local economic health,” said Nikki Simmons, Chief Financial Officer for El Paso County. “We are continuing to see steady growth in collections, and we are closely monitoring trends to ensure responsible financial planning and long-term fiscal sustainability.”

El Paso County collects a voter-approved sales tax on retail sales of tangible personal property and certain services within the county. Use tax applies to taxable goods purchased outside the county but used, stored, or consumed within El Paso County. Together, sales and use tax revenues provide a significant source of funding for essential county services. El Paso County continues to maintain one of the lowest tax burdens per resident in the state.

Sales tax revenue supports a wide range of county services, including public safety, transportation infrastructure, parks, and community programs. Finance staff noted that while revenues remain steady, the County continues to monitor economic conditions, consumer spending patterns, and regional growth that may influence future collections.

The quarterly update is part of the County’s ongoing commitment to transparency and fiscal stewardship, providing commissioners and residents with regular insight into financial performance.

The Board of County Commissioners receives financial updates throughout the year to guide budget planning and ensure alignment with county priorities and service delivery needs.

February 25, 2026 – In 2026, Bear Creek Nature Center will celebrate 50 years of connecting residents and visitors to the natural world. Established in 1976 as the Solar Trails Center, it became Colorado’s first nature center and has since served generations through environmental education, conservation, and community engagement. The anniversary coincides with the nation’s 250th and Colorado’s 150th anniversaries, offering a timely opportunity to reflect on how public lands, natural resources, and stewardship have shaped our shared history. As these milestones are commemorated, Bear Creek Nature Center’s 50th underscores the vital role local parks and nature centers play in preserving that legacy for future generations.

For five decades, Bear Creek Nature Center has provided hands-on learning experiences, interpretive programs, guided and self-guided exploration, and innovative accessibility initiatives that ensure nature is welcoming to all. From its early beginnings to its continued leadership in accessible programming, such as the Trailability Program and the Visually Impaired Persons (V.I.P.) Trail, Bear Creek Nature Center has remained committed to inspiring stewardship of El Paso County’s parks and open spaces. In a year dedicated to honoring American and Colorado heritage, the Nature Center’s anniversary underscores the enduring connection between people, place, and the responsibility to care for the lands that define our community.

“Celebrating 50 years is a remarkable milestone for Bear Creek Nature Center and for El Paso County,” said Theresa Odello, El Paso County Recreation & Cultural Services Division Manager. “As Colorado’s first nature center, Bear Creek has helped generations of residents and visitors connect with wildlife, understand the importance of conservation, and experience the outdoors in meaningful ways. This anniversary is not only a celebration of our history, but a recognition of the lasting impact the Nature Center continues to have on our community.”

The 50th anniversary celebration will culminate in a special community “Bear-thday” party on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at Bear Creek Nature Center. Additional details about the celebration and anniversary activities will be announced in the coming months.
