New York, NY (March 19, 2026)—Da Capo, an imprint of Grand Central Publishing (GCP) and the Hachette Book Group announce the publication of IN MY DARKEST HOUR: A Memoir by Dave Mustaine with Joe Layden on September 8, 2026. “In My Darkest Hour is Dave Mustaine at his most revealing, vulnerable, and true,” stated Ben Schafer, Executive Editor, Da Capo. “With lacerating honesty and soulful reflection, he speaks to the universal human experience of facing serious illness and how it changes a person, their family and friends, and one’s relationship with creativity. Da Capo is proud to publish Dave Mustaine’s most unblinking memoir to date, one that isn’t only for Megadeth fans.”

“One of most harrowing experiences of my adult life has been my seven-year journey through cancer treatment and onward into remission,” Dave Mustaine says about the experiences detailed in the forthcoming book. “This story is considerably more than just go to the doctor, get diagnosed, get treatment and hopefully I live happily ever after. This was a journey of me saving myself, staying alive, keeping my family together, and continuing to make music through it all.”

Dave Mustaine is no stranger to pain and suffering. He battled demons all his life—including an alcoholic father, addiction, and black magic—and turned fifty-eight believing he’d survived the worst. But in 2019, Mustaine was forced to face the loss of his instantly recognizable voice and the disintegration of his musical talent. Diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma at the back of his tongue, his entire career—and possibly his life—was about to end.

For Mustaine, it was one more opportunity to fight like hell.

IN MY DARKEST HOUR takes readers from the treatment room to the studio as Mustaine chronicles how his diagnosis inspired him to take up the pen and guitar pick, going from radiation and chemotherapy appointments straight into hours-long recording sessions, resulting in Megadeth’s sixteenth studio album, The Sick, The Dying…and the Dead! Along the way, Mustaine details how confronting his own mortality brought him closer to his family, taught him how to ask for help, strengthened his faith, and challenged the vulnerability of his art.

Filled with perseverance, hope, and the determination to never let the bastards grind you down, IN MY DARKEST HOUR is a masterful portrait of a Dave Mustaine that the world has yet to see, and serves as a moving reminder that even our most invincible heroes are human.

Now, six years removed from that initial diagnosis, Mustaine is seeing the biggest success of his 40-plus-year career with Megadeth’s final studio album and tour. Committed to go out on top, Megadeth’s new album (released in January 2026) debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 in the U.S., marking the band’s highest debut week ever on the chart. Around the world, the album garnered critical acclaim and hit #1 in 11 countries and landed Top 5 positions on 11 additional charts.

About Dave Mustaine: Dave Mustaine and his band Megadeth are always and forever the point of no return for metal. It would be nearly impossible to conceive where heavy music and culture would’ve gone without the band founded, fronted, and fueled by vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, and producer Dave Mustaine. As a founding member of Metallica, and then founder of Megadeth, the blast radius of Mustaine’s impact has only been magnified since 1983. Thus far, they have sold 50 million records worldwide, received a GRAMMY® Award (with 12 additional nominations), generated billions of streams, notched nine Top 10 entries on the Billboard 200, and enthralled millions of diehard fans in arenas and stadiums across the globe. Their catalog spans indisputable classics such as the platinum Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying? (cited at #8 on Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time”), the platinum Rust In Peace, and double-platinum Countdown To Extinction, which captured #2 on the Billboard 200. Meanwhile, Dystopia notched a Top 3 debut and earned a GRAMMY® Award in the category of “Best Metal Performance” with its title track. They only upped the ferocity with The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead! in 2022. It saw them return to #3, receive a “Best Metal Performance” GRAMMY® Award nomination for “We’ll Be Back,” and incite rave reviews. In 2026 Mustaine and the band reached the apex of their success: a #1 debut with their self-titled final album on the Billboard 200. Along with #1s on seven additional Billboard charts, Mustaine and Megadeth logged #1s in eleven countries. The band is currently on their multi-year farewell tour.

Ken Follett and Hachette conclude new global english language deal https://www.hbgresources.com/articles/ken-follett-and-hachette-conclude-new-global-english-language-deal/ Wed, 11 Mar 2026 17:58:23 +0000 https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/?p=2272642

Follett’s THE DEEP AND SECRET THINGS to be published worldwide by Quercus and Grand Central Publishing in September 2027

New York, US and London, UK (March 11, 2026)— Ken Follett, one of the world’s most successful authors, has signed a new global English language deal with Hachette UK and Hachette Book Group for his new novel, THE DEEP AND SECRET THINGS. Ben Sevier, President and Publisher of Hachette Book Group’s Grand Central Publishing Group and Nick Davies, Managing Director of Hachette UK’s Quercus, acquired US and Canada rights and UK and Commonwealth rights respectively, directly from the Follett Office. The new novel will be published worldwide on September 21, 2027.

In September 2025, Hachette published Ken Follett’s critically acclaimed epic novel, CIRCLE OF DAYS, about the origins of one of the world’s great mysteries, Stonehenge.   A major global bestseller, CIRCLE OF DAYS has been published in 21 languages around the world.

In his new novel THE DEEP AND SECRET THINGS, master storyteller Ken Follett immerses readers in a tale of family, religion, greed and ambition set during the sweeping societal changes of the Victorian age.

1853, South Wales. Helena Bowen, a young noblewoman, longs to study science, a wish that society denies her. When Helena first meets the Llewellyns, she knows little about their Quaker beliefs. The Llewellyns run a successful wheelmaking business, but despite their financial achievements, their religion calls for a life of simplicity, truth and equality between all. Lloyd Lewellyn, the owner’s son, epitomises all these values and his forward way of thinking deeply impresses Helena.

But then she encounters Lloyd’s cousin Johnnie, the beau of the clan, who – unlike Lloyd – is fiercely ambitious. His charming manner makes him irresistible to women and Helena also falls under his spell. But Johnnie is a risk taker. When a young teacher in the village falls pregnant with his child, and Johnnie makes an embarrassing and detrimental mistake in the company’s accounts, he runs away to London, to start fresh and build the empire he’s always longed for.

At first, all goes according to plan, and along the way Johnnie’s path crosses again with Helena’s. But Johnnie’s insatiable greed for lust and money is the cause for another, unspeakable scandal which may lead to his ultimate downfall.

The Deep and Secret Things tells the rise and fall of a young man and his legacy, set against the backdrop of the Victorian era, at a time of immense social and industrial change.

Ken Follett said of his new novel: “I love stories set in the Victorian era because of the shocking contrasts. Britain was richer than any country had ever been, but the London slums were places of grim poverty. Moral rules were strict, but rich men had mistresses and destitute women turned, in desperation, to prostitution. Dresses were gorgeous and parties were lavish, but the children of the poor started work at the age of seven. The Deep and Secret Things is about four characters who dangerously cross boundaries and live the lives they believe in—for better or worse.”

David Shelley, CEO Hachette Book Group and Hachette UK, said: “I am so proud that we will be publishing The Deep and Secret Things on both sides of the Atlantic, and honoured that Ken has chosen to continue his publishing relationship with the teams at Grand Central and Quercus. He is a unique storyteller and I can’t wait to share this book with his many devoted fans.”

Ben Sevier, President and Publisher, Grand Central Publishing Group, said: “It has been such a privilege to work with global writing legend Ken Follett.  After bringing his acclaimed epic novel Circle of Days to his legions of American readers last year, I am thrilled for the opportunity to publish his newest The Deep and Secret Things and for the GCP team to make it a major publishing event in 2027.”

Nick Davies, John Murray Group Managing Director, said: “I’m thrilled that Quercus and Grand Central are able to collaborate again on Ken’s second global English language project with Hachette.  Circle of Days became an instant Sunday Times bestseller last year delighting his fans with a deeply human story of the building of Stonehenge; The Deep and Secret Things is sure to captivate and thrill his readers anew as we dive into the Victorian era for one of 2027’s most exciting publications.”

THE DEEP AND SECRET THINGS will also be published in foreign language editions around the world including:

  • Denmark: Gyldendal
  • France: Robert Laffont
  • Germany: Bastei Lübbe AG
  • Italy: Mondadori Libri S.P.A.
  • The Netherlands: Meulenhoff Boekerij
  • Portugal: Editorial Presença
  • Spain: Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial

[Mitch had] only tugged off his boots before a ping notified him of an incoming text.  It instructed that if he wanted to confirm an appointment with Dr. Dylan Reede for ten a.m. tomorrow, he was to reply with a capital letter cee.

Mitch was the only person in the waiting room except for the receptionist who’d introduced herself as Ellie.  She had a kindhearted, maternal aspect and was almost apologetic when she’d asked him to fill out the required forms, which were numerous and, to his way of thinking, irrelevant.

Ellie had informed him that Dr. Reede was still with another patient.  She’d invited him to take a seat and told him that the doctor would be with him shortly.

But “shortly” wasn’t short enough. He was thinking of removing his sport jacket when Ellie slid open the window.  “The doctor is ready to see you now, Mr. Haskell.  Right through there.”  She indicated a closed door on the opposite side of the waiting room.  “She’s waiting for you.”

He was arrested in the motion of standing up.  “She?”

Just then the door was pushed open and a woman emerged.  She smiled and came toward to him, right hand extended.  “Mr. Haskell?  Dylan Reede.”

Holy shit.  He croaked, “Are you kidding?”

Maintaining her smile and keeping her hand outstretched, she replied, “Not about my name.”

He stared down at her hand as though uncertain what it was and what function it served, then gave it a quick shake and let immediately go.

“Come on back.”  She turned away and started for the door she’d left standing open.

As though Ellie had used her sweet demeanor to deliberately deceive him, he shot her a dirty look over his shoulder.  Her expression turned wary, although he couldn’t tell if her concern was for him or the psychologist...the one with the beguiling smoky gray eyes and prima ballerina legs.

“Lieutenant Bowie told me that you got sober and stayed sober for six months.”

            “Um-huh.”

“Until last Saturday night when you suffered a relapse.”

“Relapse?  That’s a nice way of putting it.”

“Bowie believes it was prompted by the date.”

He chewed the inside of his cheek, saying nothing.  Immediately after realizing that he was jiggling his knee, he forced it to be still.

Softly she asked if he would like some water and motioned toward the bottles on the end table.  “No thanks.”  Then, “There’s not a clock in here.  Is that on purpose?  How much time is left?”

“Don’t worry about the time,” she said.  “Is Bowie wrong about the anniversary date contributing to the episode last week?”

“I can say anything I want to, right?”

            “Yes.”

“I can also sit here like a stump and say nothing at all, right?”

“Yes.  But sitting here in hostile silence wouldn’t be very helpful.”

“Not helpful to you.  But my hostile silence could be just the therapy I need.”  He stood, picked up his jacket, and pulled it on.  “I don’t think you and I would ever be a good fit.”  He came this close – this close –  to adding a sexual context to that, but thought better of it.  “It’s been nice knowing you, but I’m outta here, and I ain’t coming back.”

She had stood up along with him.  “I wish you would reconsider.”

“I’ll bet you do.  You’ll miss out on a paying gig.  The mandated  sessions with me could really add up.  Let’s see, two a week for six weeks.”  He started counting on his fingers.  “That’s – ”

“Mitch,” she said in a chastening tone.  “Insulting me is no more effective than wisecracking.  Please think about – ”

“I’ll tell you what you should think about, doc.  If you’re getting men in this cozy little nook of yours with all the throw pillows, you really should consider wearing sensible shoes, a longer skirt, an ill-fitting cardigan, and a different face.”

She gave him a chastening look.  “Sorry, that tactic doesn’t work on me.”  She waited for a beat, then said, “Let’s sit back down and talk calmly and reasonably.  Because if you refuse these sessions, Lieutenant Bowie – ”

“Bowie can go –   Read my mind.”

“We don’t have to address the hard subjects until you’re ready to.  We can start with – ”

“My birth?  Childhood?  The loss of my virginity?  Work up from there to last Saturday night and my fall from Saint John’s grace?”

“I have this same time on Thursday morning reserved for you.  Please be here.”

            “Sorry.  Can’t make it.”

“Then we’ll work around your schedule.  I’ll see you any time you say.”

The quip he had planned to say died on his lips.  Instead, he jerked his head back and gave her a long, measuring look.  “No,” he drawled, “I don’t think you will.  See me as a patient, that is.  In fact, I can guarantee that you won’t.”

His reached out and curved his hand around the back of her neck.  Pulling her forward and up to him, he kissed her.  Swiftly but with impact.  Then he released her just as suddenly.

Holding her wide, disbelieving gaze, he smiled and dabbed at a damp spot on his lower lip with the back of his hand.  “As rules of doctor/patient conduct go, that’s a real no-no, isn’t it, Dr. Reede?  Ergo, we’re done.”

Then he went over and opened the door into the waiting room.  “Screw the escape hatch.  I’ll go out the way I came in.”

ADULT BRACES (Excerpt) https://www.hbgresources.com/articles/adult-braces-excerpt/ Fri, 27 Feb 2026 15:06:39 +0000 https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/?p=2248574

The pain was on both sides—an electric stab if I bit down on certain molars. Chewing had become a series of jump scares. Is this fun-size Milky Way going to send a bolt of lightning straight to my bunghole? What about this one? In the summer of 2020, reduced to nibbling in the front like a little weasel, I ran to my cool Gen X rock and roll dentist, Dr. Nikole, and begged for help.

I never used to have dental anxiety. My childhood dentist was lanky and twinkly eyed with a soft-spoken Scandinavian Zen that reminded me of my family in the old country. The dentist’s spitfire wife ran the office and would give me little toys and gossip with my mom. I remember my dad always reassuring me, as an endorsement of this dentist’s gentleness, “He has never hurt me.” It wasn’t that reassuring! Did some dentists HURT YOU? What the fuck?! But I did trust my dentist, and it was true, he never hurt me at all. I also never had a cavity (until my early twenties, when I suddenly had a bunch1), and my dentist said I had the most “perfect teeth” he had ever seen. He said it all the time. Perfect teeth. Wow, such beautiful, perfect teeth.

He probably said that to lots of kids, to be nice, but at the time, I imagined that it really made my dentist’s day when he saw these chompers on the agenda. Like when a piano player gets to play the finest Steinway concert grand.

I wasn’t the kind of girl who heard “perfect” a lot as an assessment of her body, so I clung to it. Not just good teeth but perfect ones. No braces needed for this perfect tooth model. No retainer, no headgear, not me! They just came out like this! Must have something to do with my perfect skull and beautiful soul! PLEASE KISS ME, JUST ANY BOY PLEASE PLEASE KISS ME I AM BEGGING YOU.

My dentist retired when I was in my twenties and he was in his eighties. I looked up his obituary while writing this and discovered he only just died in 2024, at age 107. Another patient in the comments on his memorial page called him an “iconic dentist.” Amen, brother!

Extremely uniconically, some random fucking guy took over his practice. Not having the first clue how to pick out a new dentist, as my family had been dentisted upon by the same man since the Nixon administration, I stayed. The first time I had to get a filling from the new guy, Dr. Glover, he drilled my tooth without fully anesthetizing it, didn’t believe me when I gasped that it wasn’t numb, and then told me I was being “hysterical” (literally!) when I started sobbing. He drilled my sensate pulp while I struggled to keep my panic attack as still as possible. He drilled until he was done.

A few months later, Aham and I were stopped at a light downtown near our dental office, and a dirty and disheveled man crossed the street in front of us talking to himself and swearing and arguing with no one. In our family, we call that “having a hard time.” And this guy having a hard time? OUR FUCKING DENTIST. Not some dentist we once knew, but our present-day, actively practicing dentist. Not who you hope to see having a hard time in Westlake Park! (Also, later, when I first went to see Dr. Nikole, she looked at that guy’s treatment plan and said he seemed to have marked teeth for drilling where there were no cavities! I was rudely being dental-tortured by a demon2 befouling Dr. Childhood Dentist’s sacred space!!!)

So anyway, I didn’t used to have dental trauma and anxiety, but now I do, and that’s why I sought out Dr. Nikole. She listens to me (!!!!!) and gives me gases and lets me play my little audiobooks and prescribes me Ativan for bigger procedures, and if you’re still being drilled by a man, have you considered a woman? It’s 2026! Fire all men from all jobs!

When I told her my teeth were hurting, Dr. Nikole looked at my x-rays and discovered that my molars had a bunch of big cracks in them. I was like, “Great! Sounds like an easy fix! Gorilla-glue those bad boys up so I can be on my milky way!” And she said no—that’s actually not how cracked teeth work. You just kind of have to have them until they get so bad that you need a crown or your tooth crumbles into dust and blows away. Sorry!

The reason my teeth were all cracked, she explained, was that I had developed what’s called a crossbite. That’s where your jaw shifts (from, say, stress-clenching and misery-grinding in one’s sleep) and your molars no longer fit together snugly like LEGO bricks; they clack together violently like twelve otters smashing twelve clams on twelve rocks. The only solution for this, she said, was orthodonture.

Adult braces.

Me???????? But I literally have the greatest natural mouth of all time! Check those x-rays again, lady! You must have gotten them mixed up with A DOG.

But of course, the problem was real, and of course, I was going to fix it, seeing as the alternative was a not-particularly-appealing two-phase plan consisting of Phase One: Operation Pain and Phase Two: Operation No Teeth Anymore. I made an appointment with the orthodontist she recommended.

Orthodontists are the plastic surgeons of dentists, and I don’t mean in terms of what they do—although I suppose there is a parallel—I mean in terms of vibes. My orthodontists, a married couple straight outta Melrose Place, run a braces empire stretching across the greater Seattle area. Their office is spangled with framed glossy magazine covers (from, idk, Mouth Magazine??) in which they pose like TOOTH ROYALTY, shiny hair and shark bites and power suits and erotic chemistry and $$$$$$$ energy. My braces cost around $7,000 with a minimum of $1,500 down. The place is always packed, with the barreling, angry efficiency of a trading floor. You feel not so much like a customer as a product on an assembly line.

I arrived and was swept into a chair, where one of their assistants assessed my situation at breakneck speed without saying hi or hello, ma’am or how are you or don’t worry this won’t hurt a bit. He was, weirdly, French, and my fatty alarm told me instantly that this guy did not j’adore fat people. He strode over to the 360-degree x-ray machine—me jogging to keep up—and, without saying a word or even making eye contact, stuck a plastic bit in my mouth to position my head like a cart horse. He then switched on the machine, which went WHIIIIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR and started attacking me!

Excusez-moi! Excusez-moi! Hold vos chevaux, monsieur!!!!!! ARRÊTÉ! CREVÈ!!!

This machine is like a huge gyroscope where you stand in the middle, and metal arms whirl around your head and shoulders and pump you full of beams so they can make a copy of your head. I don’t know how to convey the magnitude, but it’s scary! It is an industrial machine. It is inexorable. You cannot stop it. It could easily break your bones if you stuck an arm out at the wrong time. And this Frenchman had just tossed me in there without a fair warning or, as far as I could tell, recalibrating the machine that was used all day every day on the bodies of little, tiny kids. And I am a big, large woman!

The machine began its business and whacked me about the shoulders with its metal arms. I was paying $7,000 to be attacked by a robot. I said, “This is hitting my shoulders!” and he said, “Hold still, please,” and I said, “PLEASE, MONSIEUR, IT’S HITTING MY BODY,” and he said, “[EXASPERATED SIGH] Drop your shoulders.” The shoulders—at least in les États-Unis—are attached to the body in a frustratingly permanent way. These bad boys were already as low as they could go. But François didn’t care—he ran the machine till it was done and let it whack me over and over and luckily it didn’t hurt too much or permanently disfigure me and I guess that’s the best fat people can expect from the French!

Then we STEEPLECHASED back to the chair and François glued my brackets on with the reckless abandon of a Double Dare contestant, adding: “You will want to stick to soft foods for ze first few weeks. Like . . . [looking me up and down] per’aps salades.” Famously, the softest of all foods!

And then he was gone. They drop-kicked me out the door to make room for the next 150 kids they had lined up that day (150 x $7,000 = $1,050,000???????). And then I had adult braces.

I’ve always had a shaky relationship with self-confidence, and in my callow twenties, I was a real bitch about adult braces. Not like I publicly bullied people who had them or anything, but I remember thinking that I absolutely, under no circumstances, could ever subject myself to anything that humiliating. Which is so condescending! Filing someone else’s state under “humiliating” implies that they have something to be humiliated about, whether they feel humiliated by it or not. It’s exactly what people do to me for being fat. This is no excuse, but every accusation is a confession, and at the time, I felt very much like an overgrown, sexless child that everyone was laughing at. I’m sorry!

So maybe it was karmically appropriate—a real Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle moment—that, rounding the corner into forty, I wound up getting braces myself. And not an elegant, gossamer Invisalign tray, either. Full metal train tracks, welded on. Because if there’s one thing I’m even more certain of than my own ugliness, it’s my incompetence and low moral fiber. There was no fucking chance in Leopold II of Belgium’s red hell that I was going to keep an Invisalign tray in twenty- three hours a day, because unfortunately, I loooooooove low-stakes cheating. I love to treat myself to the indulgent thing instead of powering through the hard thing. And it’s not like Invisalign is cheaper than the metal guys! I’d still be out $7,000, and my teeth would still be fucked. No thanks! Strap ’em on me, John Henry!

This was early COVID, so we were deep in Mask Culture. There wasn’t even a vaccine yet. Everyone told me the same thing: It wasn’t a bad time to get adult braces, as times to get adult braces go. But society didn’t seem to understand that there was no good time for Lindy West to get adult braces. I was hanging on to sanity by a thread and these thirty-two little STRAIGHT WHITE MEN (all teeth are boys) had conspired to take away the one thing that wasn’t wrong with me—my “perfect teeth.” I hated it and I cried.

Now, “I’m embawassed to get adult bwaces” is America’s #1 Next Top Champagne Problem to be sure. The actually bad version of this story would be me not being able to afford adult braces and all my teeth cracking in half and falling out. I am indescribably fortunate to have been able to save my teeth, and I have to acknowledge that many people literally cannot do the things necessary to break out of harmful cycles, because they have to work and they have to take care of kids and they are just so tired, not to mention structurally held back by our “free” country. Unfortunately, I don’t exactly have an answer to the evils of capitalism. I’m sorry again as usual!

It would take a year before I had enough perspective to see the metaphor. We think of our teeth as something fixed in place, a part of the skull, crooked or straight, but they’re not. Our teeth are floating, each loose and alone in tissue, and we can shift and change them if we want to, bring them closer together or push them apart, if we’re willing to move through the pain of it, if we’re willing to be a little vulnerable, to look a little childish.

For many years, I thought my life was fixed in place, painful but immovable. I felt as though I had turned to stone, still and helpless, both physically and emotionally, slowly cracking while the world glided on without me. I took pride in my ability to weather any amount of discomfort to preserve the familiar and avoid humiliation. But I am not stone. I deserve more than endurance. I deserve pleasure and the good and the new.

Not perfect teeth but teeth free enough to move.

WHO NEEDS FRIENDS by Andrew McCarthy (Excerpt) https://www.hbgresources.com/articles/who-needs-friends-by-andrew-mccarthy-excerpt/ Mon, 23 Feb 2026 21:54:55 +0000 https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/?p=2239027

I was seated at the kitchen table drinking a cup of weak tea. The dog was asleep in the corner. My twenty-one-year-old son sat cross-legged on the floor, messing with his electric guitar, telling me a funny story about a dating disaster involving one of his good friends.

“Rocco’s a fool,” I said with affection when Sam’s tale was done. “He is,” Sam agreed. “I love him.”

We laughed. Then Sam stopped strumming and looked at me. “You don’t really have any friends, do you, Dad?”

The directness of my son’s comment was typical of him, but Sam didn’t mean it in a hurtful or aggressive way. As far as he knew, it was a fair enough assessment. But as is the case between parents and their children, there’s more to the story of my life than my son is aware. I looked at him.

“I have friends, Sam,” I said. “I just don’t see them, but I know they’re there. And that’s enough.”

Somewhere I must have known that Sam had hit a nerve, because I instantaneously and unconsciously adopted an attitude that spoke from a parental height. My tone was infused with wisdom and understanding, and allowed me to share my insight with my son in a spirit of openness and generosity.

Sam considered me—probably knew I was full of shit (even if I didn’t at the moment)—then graciously accepted my answer with a brief nod. We chatted some more, and he went off to meet his girlfriend.

His comment stayed with me.

What had actually happened to my friendships? Were they still there, as I claimed? Did I even want them? Or need them? What did I get from them, anyway? What did I have to offer them? How did friendship affect my place in the world? What did I value? What mattered?

I sipped my tea—it was cold. My eighteen-year-old daughter, Willow, raced through, late for a dance class. The dog lifted her head at this excitement, stretched, then went back to sleep.

My experience with friendship has not always been straightforward.

Growing up in suburban New Jersey, mine was a typical neighborhood upbringing, now long gone—driveway basketball games and stolen peeks at Playboy magazine in wood-paneled basements. “Be home at six for dinner” was my mother’s after-school mantra. I was the third of four boys. My older brother Peter was my protector. I was a shy kid with a small circle, yet never wanted for friends.

In my early twenties I became successful in the movies. “Overnight,” my position in the world was forever altered. I was a very unprepared public figure. Someone who was content to slip along the edges, desiring to be special yet not craving overt atten- tion, I was thrust into the center of things. People came at me. I wrapped myself tighter around the friends I had before this burst of notoriety. That I began to drink too much spoke to my innate alcoholism and not to my newfound fortune.

I retreated, then withdrew.

By the time this brush with fame had subsided and my drink- ing had been arrested, I was nearly thirty, and a more solitary version of who I was began to emerge. I discovered I liked my own company and often sought out time alone.

When eventually I married, I saw that almost all my friend- ships with women had been based around flirtation and the possibility of our going to bed. That obviously had to change. And with men, I looked up to realize that my several close and long- time friends had moved away. Far away.

On the rare occasion I did form a new connection, the motivation to nurture it was often lacking. Whether a reaction to the hollowness of some insincere friendships made during my early fame, or a fearful nature, or just becoming set in my habits, I found myself uninterested, even unwilling, to reach out to new friends. No matter—I was happy in my own company and with that of my wife and children. And there was always work. Life felt full—at least full enough.

But sitting alone at the kitchen table, dog asleep in the corner, my now-cold tea in hand, I became aware that this was one of those moments that occasionally present themselves and, by the very nature of its almost imperceptible arrival, demand a reckoning.

MICHAEL DOUGLAS MEMOIR  COMING FROM GRAND CENTRAL PUBLISHING IN FALL 2026 https://www.hbgresources.com/articles/michael-douglas-memoir-coming-from-grand-central-publishing-in-fall-2026/ Thu, 12 Feb 2026 18:19:30 +0000 https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/?p=2230262

New York, NY (February 11, 2026) — Grand Central Publishing (GCP), a division of the Hachette Book Group, is honored to announce the forthcoming publication of the long-awaited memoir by two-time Academy Award-winning actor and producer Michael Douglas. The book, currently untitled, is scheduled for publication on October 6, 2026, in hardcover, e-book, and audiobook editions. Colin Dickerman, Senior Vice President and Editor-in-Chief at GCP acquired World Rights from Shane Salerno of The Story Factory.  Headline will publish simultaneously in the UK.  Michael Fleming is collaborating with Douglas on the book.

Michael Douglas is a legendary actor and Hollywood Icon whose five-decade career spans film, television, and producing. He has won two Academy Awards, a BAFTA Award, five Golden Globes, a Primetime Emmy, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the AFI Life Achievement Award, among many others.

He starred in and produced some of the most successful movies of all time, including One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s NestRomancing the StoneThe China SyndromeFatal AttractionBlack Rain, Wall StreetBasic Instinct, DisclosureThe Game, Wonder Boys, Traffic, and Behind the Candelabra. His iconic movies have defined cultural moments and sometimes whole decades.

Beyond his artistic achievements, Douglas is a dedicated philanthropist and activist championing peace, democracy, gun control, and nuclear disarmament. His advocacy led to his 1998 appointment by United Nation’s Secretary-General Kofi Annan as a Messenger of Peace.

For the first time, Douglas is ready to tell the unfiltered story of his life in a raw, career-sweeping memoir that traces his journey from his father, Kirk Douglas’ shadow to his own stardom, revealing his personal challenges, including addiction that threatened his marriage and career, love affairs, as well as his son’s devastating drug addiction and prison sentence. He also shares his triumphs: his victorious fight against stage-four cancer and his enduring twenty-five-year marriage to Catherine Zeta-Jones, which has proved skeptics wrong and become one of Hollywood’s most enduring love stories.

Douglas said:

“After being asked for many years, I’ve finally decided it’s time to tell my story on my own terms. Not the highlight reel, not the version shaped by headlines or box office numbers, but the real one. I’ve lived a life that unfolded in public while being deeply private at the same time, and there’s a difference. This is about where I came from, what I fought against, and   what I chose for myself. Fame can blur the truth; this is my attempt to bring it back into focus.”

Dickerman said, “Growing up in the shadow of a Hollywood legend, navigating a risk-taking career that has spanned six decades and included films that defined our culture, privately fighting health and family battles while in the glare of the spotlight—Douglas’ life is a towering achievement in perseverance.  That he has chosen to tell his story with such honesty and intimacy is a gift to his fans as well as everyone who wants a front row seat to Hollywood’s most turbulent and thrilling years.”

MALCOLM GLADWELL ANNOUNCES “THE AMERICAN WAY OF KILLING,” A NEW BOOK EXPLORING THE NATION’S GUN VIOLENCE EPIDEMIC https://www.hbgresources.com/articles/malcolm-gladwell-announces-the-american-way-of-killing-a-new-book-exploring-the-nations-gun-violence-epidemic/ Thu, 05 Feb 2026 18:39:45 +0000 https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/?p=2223346

BUILDING ON DECADES OF RESEARCH AND REPORTING, GLADWELL ARGUES THAT THE SOLUTION LIES NOT SIMPLY IN “MORE GUN CONTROL,” BUT IN A TOTAL REEVALUATION OF THE ISSUE.

NEW YORK, NY (February 5, 2026) – In The American Way of Killing (out September 29, 2026) Malcolm Gladwell, author of New York Times bestsellers including Revenge of the Tipping Point and Talking to Strangers and host of the award-winning podcast Revisionist History, gets to the heart of America’s gun violence crisis: Where did America’s violence problem come from? And why has it proven so difficult to address?

From The Tipping Point to Blink to his podcast episodes, Gladwell has returned again and again to the topics of crime, policing, and punishment. In The American Way of Killing, he expands on his reporting, originally featured in a series of Revisionist History episodes, with new interviews and research.

The American Way of Killing is an argument for looking in unexpected places when trying to understand the American problem of lethal violence. Gladwell explores the profound absurdity of the way the nation handles gun violence through a series of stories — the miracle of a young gunshot victim in Washington D.C., the legal travails of a 17th century English knight, a professor in Alabama with a terrible secret, and a prison in Germany that would be unrecognizable to any American, among others.

The American Way of Killing will be available in audio, print, and eBook, on September 29, 2026. Narrated by the author, the audiobook will feature Gladwell’s trademark audio-first production quality, complete with original reporting and interviews, archival tape, sound design, and more. The audio edition will be produced by Pushkin Industries and published by RBmedia, with the print edition to be published by Little, Brown and Company. Preorder the audiobook hereand the print edition here.

“At Pushkin, we approach publishing as a strategic design process,” said Nicole Op den Bosch, SVP & Publisher at Pushkin Industries. “The American Way of Killing is the result of intentional, cross-format thinking, and our partnership with RBmedia and Little, Brown reflects a shared commitment to the craft of storytelling in both audio and print.”

We join their other publishers in congratulating literary and artistic giants Kwame Alexander and Kadir Nelson on their distinguished honors.”

The Undead Fox of Deadwood Forest, written by Aubrey Hartman and edited by Ruqayyah Daud, has received incredible critical acclaim, having been named to multiple Best of 2025 lists (Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, New York Public Library, and others) and earning four starred reviews. Said Booklist in their starred review, “This tale of self-love and acceptance makes the most of its unique setting and the memorable characters found there.” In the novel, Clare (an undead fox) and Gingersnipes (an entirely dead badger) begrudgingly team up to change their destinies. A companion to The Undead Fox of Deadwood Forest, The Unsung Hero of Deadwood Forest, is scheduled for publication in 2027.

Aubrey Hartman is also the author of The Lion of Lark-Hayes Manor (2023), “an enchanting adventure that encourages readers to find their voice and delight in stories” (Booklist). Her novels have received critical acclaim from Kirkus Reviews, Booklist, Publishers Weekly, Book Riot, The Bulletin, and various other outlets, and have been featured on numerous Best Books of the Year lists.

Will’s Race for Home, written by Jewell Parker Rhodes and edited by Alvina Ling, follows twelve-year-old Will Samuels as he and his sharecropper father strike out to claim land from Texas during the 1889 Oklahoma Land Rush. An instant New York Times bestseller and recipient of four starred reviews, Will’s Race for Home confronts the racism and prejudice that Black Americans faced post-slavery and includes an extensive afterword that pays tribute to the stories of African Americans on the western front. In their starred review, Publishers Weekly describes the book as, “Ripe with historical facts and moments of high tension, this adventurous story reflects on the aftereffects of violence on soldiers and what life looked like for Black citizens following the conclusion of the Civil War. It’s an empowering read that never loses sight of Will’s profound exploration of adolescence.”

Jewell Parker Rhodes is the New York Times bestselling author of several books for youth, including Ghost Boys; Black Brother, Black Brother; Paradise on Fire; and Towers Falling. She is the recipient of many distinguished awards and honors, including the Coretta Scott King Author Honor, the Green Earth Book Award, an NAACP ImageAward nomination, the Jane Addams Children’s Book Award, and the Octavia E. Butler Award. Dr. Rhodes is the Founding Artistic Director of the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing and Virginia G. Piper Endowed Chair at Arizona State University.

Split the Sky, written by Marie Arnold and edited by Margaret Raymo, is a young adult novel that uniquely incorporates speculative elements in a story examining racial violence and bigotry. Fifteen-year-old Lala Russell has inherited her grandmother’s gift of foresight. When a vision shows her the racially motivated killing of a Black teenager, she must contend with family expectations and deep moral questions to decide what’s right. “Steeped in Black history, tough moral dilemmas, and poignant depictions of contemporary social conflict, this is a thought-provoking journey with plenty of heart and surprises” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

Marie Arnold was born in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, and came to America at the age of seven. She attended Columbia College in Chicago, where her main focus was creative writing. As Lola StVil, she is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling indie author. Over two million readers have downloaded her young adult fantasy series Guardians.

Kadir Nelson is the illustrator of many books for young readers, including the Caldecott Medal winner The Undefeated, written by Kwame Alexander; the New York Times bestseller We Are the Ship, winner of the Coretta Scott King Author Award and Illustrator Honor as well as the Sibert Medal; and Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom, written by Carole Boston Weatherford, which was an NAACP Image Award winner, Caldecott Honor Book, and Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award winner. His latest release, Basket Ball: The Story of the All-American Game, published on January 13, 2026, has received four starred reviews and was an instant New York Times and USA Today bestseller. His work has appeared in many publications, including The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, and Sports Illustrated. Kadir’s original paintings are in the permanent collections of the US House of Representatives and the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery and National Museum of African American History and Culture, and he has been inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame.

Kwame Alexander is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of over forty books, including the Newbery Medal–winning novel The Crossover; the Caldecott Medal- and Newbery Honor–winning picture book The Undefeated; The Door of No Return; Black Star; American Story, How Sweet the Sound; and J vs. K, which he co-wrote with Jerry Craft. His next book, publishing on February 3, 2026, is The Mighty Macy, a charming chapter book featuring illustrations by Kitt Thomas. An Emmy Award–winning producer, NAACP Image Award recipient and Sine Fellow at American University, Kwame is also the founder of the literacy nonprofit One Word at a Time.

Raven’s Ribbons, written by Tasha Spillett, illustrated by Daniel Ramirez, and edited by Susan Rich, is a joyful story of young Raven, who loves dancing with his grandmother at round dances, admiring the ribbon skirts in motion. He longs for a ribbon skirt of his own, and so she makes him a skirt to wear at the next round dance. A celebration of individuality and self-expression, “Spillet captures the joy of the round dance, and a feeling of belonging and connection offered in intergenerational Indigenous community” (Publisher Weekly, starred review).

Tasha Spillett is a Cree and Trinidadian award-winning poet, scholar, and writer. She is the author of several books for young readers, including the New York Times bestselling picture book I Sang You Down from the Stars with art by Michaela Goade.

Daniel Ramirez is a descendant of the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe of Michigan and a much-celebrated two-spirit fine artist. His award-winning art has appeared in exhibitions and museums across the world, including at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC.

Hello Sunshine, written and illustrated by Keezy Young and edited by Andrea Colvin, is a lush and romantic queer horror graphic novel set in a small town where a troubled teen has gone missing, sending his loved ones on a paranormal journey to bring him home. Kirkus Reviews calls the book “beautiful, spooky, and emotional.”

Keezy Young is an award-winning and Eisner- and Ignatz-nominated cartoonist and illustrator who writes and draws comics and graphic novels. They enjoy writing mystery, horror, love stories, and ghosts, and their vibrant retro color palettes and strong sense of linework help to bring their stories to life. Their work is character-focused, and they often explore LGBTQIA characters and themes. Mental illness is also an important focus in many of their stories.

The Snips: A Bad Buzz Day, written and illustrated by Raúl the Third and edited by Margaret Raymo, is the first book in award-winning creator Raúl the Third’s fun and zany early graphic novel series starring a crew of scissor- wielding hairdresser superheroes. Says Booklist, “Raúl’s signature bright, bold art style is blended with comic-book formatting that jumps off the page . . . . A wildly enjoyable reminder that the greatest success comes not from winning, but from bringing support and joy to the community.” Also contributing to the creation of the book are Elaine Bay (colors), Eleonora Bruni (coloring), and Rob Leigh (lettering).

Raúl The Third is a four-time Pura Belpré Award-winning illustrator, author, and artist. He is the illustrator of the critically acclaimed Low Riders in Space series and the World of ¡Vamos! books. His work centers around the contemporary Mexican American experience and his memories of growing up in El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico.

The Invisible Parade, by Leigh Bardugo and John Picacio, with illustrations by Picacio, and edited by Alvina Ling, is a stunning picture book collaboration set against the backdrop of Día de Muertos. The concept originated with Picacio, who pitched Bardugo in 2016 with a single line: “It’s The Wizard of Oz set in a graveyard.” In a statement, Picacio shared, “We made The Invisible Parade for people of all ages who have felt loss, or have lost someone they love.” Kirkus Reviews calls the book “simply wondrous,” and Booklist, “an understated masterclass in processing grief through culture.”

John Picacio is a World Fantasy Award– and Hugo Award–winning artist who has created book illustrations for major works by George R. R. Martin, Rebecca Roanhorse, and many more. He’s the founder of the Mexicanx Initiative, spearheading the journeys of more than forty Mexican and Mexican American creators into the wider awareness of fantasy and science fiction audiences.

Go Tell It: How James Baldwin Became a Writer, written by Quartez Harris, illustrated by Gordon C. James, and edited by Lisa Yoskowitz, is a stunning, USA Today bestselling picture book biography of James Baldwin. Pairing Harris’s exquisite prose and James’s breathtaking illustrations, Go Tell It is both a beautiful introduction to the legendary writer’s life and career and a celebration of the written word. In their starred review (one of five earned by Go Tell It), BookPage calls the book, “Exceptional, a master class of a picture book biography overflowing with energy-infused words and pictures” and “an inspiring look at one of America’s most important writers.”

Quartez Harris is a poet, teacher, and bestselling author. He was a Baldwin House fellow and named Ohio Poet of the Year for his book We Made It to School Alive, and his poetry has garnered numerous accolades. He spent many years as a second-grade teacher in the Cleveland public school system and currently spends his time writing and teaching poetry workshops.

Gordon C. James is an award-winning fine artist specializing in figurative drawing and a bestselling, award-winning illustrator. He illustrated Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut, which received Caldecott, Newbery, and Coretta Scott King Illustrator honors, and I Am Every Good Thing, which won the Kirkus Prize, among others. He has worked for Hallmark as an illustrator and artist and taught at the University of North Carolina.

The Ink Witch, written by Steph Cherrywell and edited by Erika Turner and Milena Blue Spruce, is a hilarious and affirming cozy middle-grade fantasy about the adventures of a girl named Becca who discovers she is the descendant of a powerful witch coven. Kirkus Reviews writes, “Humor and heart entwine in this hilarious and wildly creative adventure” (starred review).

Steph Cherrywell is a nonbinary librarian, author, illustrator, and game creator. They are also the author of Unboxing Libby. They have previously written and illustrated the YA-and-older graphic novels Widgey Q. Butterfluff and Pepper Penwell and the Land Creature of Monster Lake, and written and programmed the award-winning text adventures Brain Guzzlers from Beyond! and Zozzled.

He’s So Possessed with Me, written by Corey Liu and edited by Crystal Castro, is a terrifying, tender, and bitingly hilarious supernatural young adult horror novel about a boy who must save his best friend from a demon that wants to steal his heart—literally. Liu’s debut novel follows high school senior Colin and his best friend, Ren, who, after leaving a gay club, first encounter homophobic bullies and then a demonic force that takes hold of Ren. What follows is “[a] deliciously creepy queer story that puts friendship first” (Kirkus Reviews).

Corey Liu received an MA in Children’s Literature from UBC and has written for television shows like Family Law, Pinecone & Pony, and Davey and Jonesie’s Locker. Most recently, he was a co-executive producer of the Kpop series Gangnam Project.

Earlier in his career, Spade was Interim President of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Books & Media division (HMH), a leading publisher of textbooks, instructional technology materials, assessments, and reference works, leading the trade business through its 2021 sale to HarperCollins. Hachette Marks 200th Anniversary with $200,000 Fund to Provide Curated Classroom Libraries to 200 Underfunded Schools and Education Programs https://www.hbgresources.com/articles/hachette-marks-200th-anniversary-with-200000-fund-to-provide-curated-classroom-libraries-to-200-underfunded-schools-and-education-programs/ Tue, 09 Dec 2025 13:41:08 +0000 https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/?p=2169127

Twenty-three organizations join HBG to counteract the current literacy crisis

Raising Readers is HBG’s social impact campaign to combat the significant decline in children’s reading for pleasure, the single biggest predictor of a child’s future success

New York (December 9, 2025) — David Shelley, CEO of Hachette Book Group (HBG) and Hachette UK announced today a $200,000 investment to its Raising Readers campaign to combat the growing decline in children’s reading for fun and entertainment. This contribution also commemorates the 200th anniversary of Hachette’s parent company, Hachette Livre, which was founded in 1826 in Paris. HBG is proud to celebrate this significant literary milestone, as Hachette Livre has published many masterpieces from more than 200 imprints worldwide, each with its own rich history.

“In 2026, we aim to take Raising Readers to the next level. 2026 serendipitously marks the 200th anniversary of Hachette Livre. Milestones like this are often celebrated internally, but given the urgency of the reading crisis, I believe the most meaningful way to mark the bicentenary is to invest more deeply in Raising Readers,” said Shelley.

HBG’s $200,000 Raising Readers fund will be dedicated to social impact initiatives embedded within its urgent and long-term Raising Readers campaign. Raising Readers strives to raise awareness of the decline in the number of children reading for fun and encourages everyone to make reading for enjoyment part of children’s daily lives. Reading for fun impacts academic results, mental health, wealth, communication skills, happiness, and ambition.

As a part of the campaign, HBG’s 2026 philanthropic initiatives include:

  • Providing curated classroom libraries to 200 underfunded schools and education programs in confirmed book deserts. This will allow at least 50,000 students to gain sustained access to books that support literacy, rehabilitation, and educational advancement.
  • Mobilizing at least 200 volunteers to deliver reading or literacy support.
  • Launching a minimum of 200 Little Free Libraries in book deserts with committed replenishment throughout 2026. Priority will be given to neighborhoods with low access to bookstores and libraries, plus areas surrounding reentry housing and transitional communities. This will allow HBG to place at least 40,000 books in circulation throughout the year.
  • HBG will host 200 author visits to classrooms (virtually or in-person) for immersive author sessions and read-alouds, providing access to at least 10,000 participants, all of whom will gain direct exposure to the joy of reading.

In addition to the above actions, investments will be made toward evidence-based literacy programs that measurably improve reading proficiency via structured tutoring, classroom literacy coaching, family literacy, community library rebuilds, or community programs that aim to close the gap in lower-than-average literacy rates.

“The outpouring of support from our authors and partners in the first year of the Raising Readers campaign has been inspiring and energizing. I am confident that these new initiatives will help us raise significantly more readers during this historic year for Hachette and well beyond,” said Megan Tingley, President and Publisher of Little, Brown Books for Young Readers at Hachette Book Group.

The larger Raising Readers campaign has made major strides since its launch in December 2024. Some key highlights and updates include:

  • To date, across HBG and Hachette UK, six million books now include the Raising Readers message about the reading crisis and sharing the importance of encouraging a child’s lifelong love of reading. By the end of next year, this number should be 25 million+ across more than 3,000 works.
  • On December 11th at its NYC headquarters, HBG is proud to end the year with its first in-person Raising Readers event: a Holiday Book Wrapping Party hosted with Read Ahead, where volunteers and supporters will wrap 1000 children’s books for the development of students’ social-emotional skills essential for academic and life-long success.
  • HBG is also working with  TDW+Co, a social impact agency, to grow the Raising Readers campaign to reach larger audiences. TDW+Co is a community-based and mission-driven agency that seeks to build authentic connections between brands and consumers through cultural understanding and a network of community partners. The collective goal to elevate diverse communities aligns closely with HBG’s Changing the Story business pillar.

Legacy Lit to Publish WHO’S WATCHING SHORTY? by Reshona Landfair: A Fearless, Timely Memoir About One of the Most High-Profile Cases of a Generation https://www.hbgresources.com/articles/legacy-lit-to-publish-whos-watching-shorty-by-reshona-landfair-a-fearless-timely-memoir-about-one-of-the-most-high-profile-cases-of-a-generation/ Tue, 18 Nov 2025 16:26:09 +0000 https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/?p=2140481

New York, NY (November 17, 2025)—Legacy Lit is pleased to announce the forthcoming publication of WHO’S WATCHING SHORTY?: Reclaiming Myself from the Shame of R. Kelly’s Abuse by Reshona Landfair, scheduled for publication on February 03, 2026.

Reshona Landfair—known as “Jane Doe” when she testified at R. Kelly’s trial—was the 14-year-old-girl in the child pornography video that ultimately led to racketeering and sex-trafficking convictions and a 30-year prison sentence for the R&B superstar. No one in Landfair’s world was looking out for her interests or trying to protect her from someone who was a known (or at least rumored) predator. The people who should have stood up for her—from her family to music business executives to social services to law enforcement—all looked the other way, blinded by his fame and celebrity. That’s the story that hasn’t been told, and which Reshona is finally ready to recount, in her own words.

What was it like to be a young teenager, emotionally still a child, and be caught up in his orbit? Why did she believe he loved her, despite how badly he treated her? Why did she keep his secrets for so long? This book is an insider’s view from the girl, now woman, that R. Kelly called his “goddaughter,” the man to whom she lost her virginity, her voice, her freedom, and nearly her life, in the years he had her under his perverse control.

A deeply personal and ultimately empowering memoir, Who’s Watching Shorty? is more than a story of bravery; it’s a hard-hitting reminder to always look after those you love. Jane Doe is no longer a nameless plaintiff on a long court document. Jane Doe is Reshona Landfair, a champion of victims of abuse and coercion, a woman whose fearless voice and transformative words will provide courage for generations to come.

“Here at Legacy Lit, we are honored to be able to share and uplift Reshona’s story. This is not just a tale of survival, this memoir is a powerful reminder to always look out for the most vulnerable around you, give voice to the voiceless, and inspire the courage to act in ourselves and others.” – Krishan Trotman, Publisher of Legacy Lit.

“I wrote this book because I want other young women to know that no matter what has been done to you, or what you have endured, it was not your fault. Show yourself some grace and the healing will begin.” – Reshona Landfair.

Reshona Landfair was the face of 4 The Cause, a four-person musical group signed to RCA/BMG from 1994-2000. More recently, Reshona has worked in community health within the Chicago public school system and is the founder of Project Refine, a mentor program for young women.

The book is scheduled for publication on February 03, 2026, in hardcover, e-book, and audio editions. Legacy Lit Publisher, Krishan Trotman, acquired World English, First Serial, and Audio rights from Liz Nealon of Great Dog Literary.

Alvina Ling becomes Vice President, Publisher of new imprint

Erin Berger to join LBYR as Vice President, Publishing Director, Picture Books, Middle Grade, and Graphic Novels

Lisa Yoskowitz elevated to Vice President, Publishing Director, Young Adult, New Adult, and Nonfiction

NEW YORK, NY (November 6, 2025)Little, Brown Books for Young Readers (LBYR), a division of Hachette Book Group (HBG), announced today strategic changes to their editorial structure—including the launch of an exciting new boutique imprint and the establishment of two distinct editorial groups.

Acclaimed editor Alvina Ling will be promoted to Vice President, Publisher of a new imprint. Ling, a recipient of the Medal for Editorial Excellence from the Center for Fiction, has been Vice President, Editor-in-Chief since 2014 and recently celebrated 25 years with LBYR. Ling is renowned for her impressive bevy of award winners, including Grace Lin’s WHERE THE MOUNTAIN MEETS THE MOON (Newbery Honor), A BIG MOONCAKE FOR A LITTLE STAR (Caldecott Honor), and WHEN THE SEA TURNED SILVER (National Book Award finalist); BEAR CAME ALONG by Richard T. Morris, illustrated by LeUyen Pham (Caldecott Honor); DAVE THE POTTER by Laban Carrick Hill, illustrated by Bryan Collier (Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award, Caldecott Honor); and STRANGE THE DREAMER by Laini Taylor (Printz Honor); among others. In addition to these impressive accolades, she has launched the #1 bestselling series THE LAND OF STORIES by Chris Colfer, Holly Black’s FOLK OF THE AIR AND NOVELS OF ELFHAME, and THE WILD ROBOT by Peter Brown, which was made into an Oscar-nominated film and has sold over 7 million copies worldwide to date. More news about the imprint name, logo, and launch list will be shared in the new year.

Said LBYR President and Publisher Megan Tingley, “The opportunity to work with Alvina Ling is a golden ticket for any creator in the children’s book universe. She is a brilliant tastemaker who has a remarkable gift for attracting and developing literary and artistic talent, championing underrepresented voices, and bringing life-changing works of literature to young people. I have no doubt this imprint will continue her stellar trajectory.”

As Ling steps down from her Editor-in-Chief responsibilities, the editorial team will now be divided into two editorial groups, one focused on Young Reader (0–12) and the other on Older Readers and Upper Nonfiction (12+).

Erin Berger will join LBYR on November 10 in the newly created role of Vice President, Publishing Director, overseeing Picture Book, Middle Grade, and Graphic Publishing. Berger comes to HBG from Scholastic, where she served as Senior Vice President of Trade Marketing and Publicity for six years, following roles at Penguin Young Readers and Simon & Schuster. A 25-year veteran of the industry, Berger has a proven track record advising on acquisitions and collaborating with editors, authors, and agents to build their brands in the marketplace.

Some of the many notable projects Berger has worked on include the New York Times bestselling picture books ALL BECAUSE YOU MATTER by Tami Charles, illustrated by Bryan Collier; BE YOU! by Peter H. Reynolds; and THE THREE BILLY GOATS GRUFF by Mac Barnett, illustrated by Jon Klassen; classic brands such as Eric Carle’s THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR and the works of Roald Dahl; the middle grade franchises WINGS OF FIRE by Tui T. Sutherland and FRONT DESK by Kelly Yang; and the graphic novel series HEARTSTOPPER by Alice Oseman, Ann M. Martin’s THE BABY-SITTERS CLUB (various illustrators), and Raina Telgemeier and Scott McCloud’s The Cartoonists Club. Said Berger, “I have long admired the brilliant editorial vision behind LBYR’s highly curated, award-winning, and bestselling list. After more than two decades working on the marketing and publicity side of publishing, I am eager to leverage my expertise into this editorial leadership role and work with my acclaimed colleagues on creative strategies to support our authors and reach our readers.”

Lisa Yoskowitz, formerly Vice President, Executive Editorial Director, has been promoted to Vice President, Publishing Director, overseeing LBYR’s titles for older readers, including the Young Adult, New Adult, and Upper Nonfiction categories. Yoskowitz joined LBYR in 2014 following roles at Dutton and Disney-Hyperion and is the founder of Requited—LBYR’s recently launched new adult imprint. Her resumé touts a long list of acclaimed and bestselling titles, including the #1 New York Times bestselling INHERITANCE GAMES saga by Jennifer Lynn Barnes and STAMPED: RACISM, ANTIRACISM, AND YOU by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi, as well as bestselling works by Ibtihaj Muhammad, Clint Smith, Tess Sharpe, and Tamara Ireland Stone. In her new role, Yoskowitz will bring her editorial vision and industry expertise to the task of overseeing LBYR and Requited’s portfolio of books for ages 12+ and expanding their presence in the ebook and audiobook market, while continuing to acquire and edit select titles for both lists.

Of the changes, Tingley said, “We are thrilled to welcome Erin Berger, who has a wealth of experience and is energized to strengthen our publishing strategy for picture books, middle grade, and graphic novels. And Lisa Yoskowitz, who will be overseeing young adult, new adult, and nonfiction, has the rare combination of editorial chops and business savvy that has helped us innovate and grow for the past ten years. I am confident our outstanding team of editors and our authors will thrive under this new leadership structure.”

Da Capo to Publish EVEN THE GOOD GIRLS WILL CRY: A ’90s Rock Memoir By Melissa Auf der Maur, a remarkably open-hearted, clear-eyed memoir of the ’90s Alternative era by the bassist of Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins https://www.hbgresources.com/articles/da-capo-to-publish-even-the-good-girls-will-cry-a-90s-rock-memoir-by-melissa-auf-der-maur-a-remarkably-open-hearted-clear-eyed-memoir-of-the-90s-alternative-era-by-the-bassist-of/ Thu, 30 Oct 2025 13:52:00 +0000 https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/?p=2123569

EVEN THE GOOD GIRLS WILL CRY is slated to release March 17, 2026

New York, NY (October 30, 2025)—Da Capo, an imprint of Grand Central Publishing (GCP) and the Hachette Book Group announce the publication of EVEN THE GOOD GIRLS WILL CRY: A ’90s Rock Memoir by Melissa Auf der Maur on March 17, 2026. “Melissa Auf der Maur’s eyewitness account of rock and roll counterculture in the last days of the 20th century is spellbinding, harrowing, heartbreaking, and redemptive,” stated Ben Schafer, Executive Editor, Da Capo. “EVEN THE GOOD GIRLS WILL CRY is a truthful testament to the humanity of the artists who made the music that soundtracked the era, one that Da Capo is thrilled to publish.”

“This book is about the decade that defined me and my generation, 1991-2001, and my life in the rock bands which allowed me to have a front row seat to an incredibly visceral and unforgettable moment in the counterculture,” said Auf der Maur. “It’s a love letter to the power of music and one-of-a-kind voices that make the world a cooler place; it’s also an ode to the analog, and what magic has been lost. Sharing what our generation witnessed, and what the world once was, in my hope of building a more livable future together.”

EVEN THE GOOD GIRLS WILL CRY begins with Auf der Maur’s bohemian upbringing in Montreal, where her early, deep connection to art and music gave her entry to the colorful and thriving local creative scene. Working as a cassette DJ and ticket girl, she would see (and sometimes meet) the luminaries who’d pass through town—Nirvana, Jane’s Addiction, Pavement, Sonic Youth. Thanks to a thrown beer bottle and a long-shot fan letter to a PO Box, her band Tinker scored a life-changing opening slot for The Smashing Pumpkins and, sensing her natural talent on bass, Billy Corgan recommended her to Courtney Love, just one of the many uncanny threads that weaves destiny throughout this riveting memoir.

Whisked from her local scene and thrust into the eye of a hurricane of grief on a global stage, Melissa joined Hole for the band’s 1994 Live Through This world tour just after the deaths of Kurt Cobain and Hole’s prior bassist, Kristen Pfaff, with Courtney Love at the center of it all. It was a tour of passionate intensity, as a chaotic yet stunningly powerful band constantly threatened to spin out of control. Melissa brings the reader with raging intimacy into the action, offering a heroic portrait of the unforgettable Courtney Love as she howled into the darkness as if to keep grief at bay.

That was only the beginning of Melissa’s journey through alternative rock. Part rock memoir, part travel diary, part psychedelic scrapbook, EVEN THE GOOD GIRLS WILL CRY is a behind-the-scenes rock ’n’ roll memoir with a soulful intimacy and mystic undertone that sets it apart from memoirs by her peers. It is a vivid dispatch from the last analog decade, artistically capturing that bygone era in all its messy, angsty glory.

About Melissa Auf der Maur: Melissa Auf der Maur, was born and raised in Montreal, Canada with a fine arts education. She is an acclaimed musician, photographer, curator and producer, best known as the former bassist of rock bands Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins.  In 2010 she co-founded Basilica Hudson, a multidisciplinary art center in Hudson, NY, where she lives with her family and magic cats.

PETALUMA, CA, NEW YORK, NY, & BROOKLYN, NY (September 10, 2025) — Hachette Book Group (HBG) and Stable Distribution, the newly formed distribution division of The Stable Book Group, today unveiled its inaugural slate of publishing partners—a term the company uses by design to reflect a more imprint‑like, long‑term collaboration model. The first wave includes Bushel & Peck Books, Empress Editions, Fayetteville Mafia Press, Galpón Press, Islandport Press, Notable Kids, PUG (Pan‑Universal Galactic Worldwide), Whitefox, and Worldwide Buddies in addition to The Stable Book Group’s imprints and partners: Montague Books, Mountain Gazette, Skybox Press, Trafalgar Square Books, Ulysses Press, and VeloPress Books.

Launching in January 2026 and powered by a fulfillment partnership with Hachette Book Group—including HBG’s state‑of‑the‑art Indiana facility for North America—Stable Distribution pairs big‑house logistics with a nimble, indie‑first sales and technology stack.

“This first group of fifteen publishers reflects what The Stable is all about—distinct editorial visions, entrepreneurial teams, and books with defined audiences,” said Chris Gruener, CEO of The Stable Book Group. “By combining Hachette’s world‑class operations with a purpose‑built sales organization and our Perfect Bound technology, we’re creating an advantage for independents at every stage of a book’s life.”

Stable Distribution’s sales organization is led by Jodi Weiss, EVP, Head of Sales, a veteran sales executive formerly on Hachette’s sales leadership team and Chief Sales Officer at Workman Publishing. National Book Travelers, consisting of Imprint Group (West), Fujii Associates (Midwest), and Como Sales (East), has been appointed to represent the U.S. independent and educational wholesale markets. Manda Group will represent all sales channels in the Canadian market.

All partners will be onboarded to Perfect Bound, the end‑to‑end publishing platform for title management, real‑time sales and inventory, automated royalties, and access to a global print marketplace—standardizing data flows and accelerating speed‑to‑market across the list.

“Stable’s model gives us the logistics muscle of a major while preserving the identity and agility that define independents,” said Weiss. “Our rep‑led strategy—spanning across all channels—aims to help independent publishers reach more readers than ever before.”

NEW YORK (October 15, 2025) — Stephen Graham, Emmy-award-winning co-creator and star of Adolescence, is working with psychology lecturer Orly Klein on a major new project asking fathers to write a letter to their sons about what it means to be a man.

These letters, including one written by Graham to his own son, will be included in LETTERS TO OUR SONS, which will be published by Union Square & Co. in the US and Bloomsbury in the UK in October 2026. Editor-at-Large Claire Wachtel acquired North American rights from Rebecca Wearmouth at the literary agency Peters Fraser + Dunlop.

After exploring the issue of toxic masculinity in the Netflix global phenomenon Adolescence, which he co-created and starred in, Graham wanted to continue that conversation. Along with Klein, he is now inviting fathers from all walks of life and from around the world to draw from their own personal experiences and perspectives as they explain to their sons the true value of healthy masculinity and share advice, anecdotes, regrets, and joys. Embracing emotional expression, vulnerability, and connection, these letters help reclaim the positive qualities of manhood. LETTERS TO OUR SONS will be a collection of honest, powerful and moving letters that will resonate everywhere.

“After the huge impact of Adolescence, I realized there was a greater need for communication between fathers and sons. There is arguably an even bigger disconnect than ever before, and I would love to help create more opportunity for fathers to reach out to their sons and carry on the conversation. We want to hear from men of all ages, first-time fathers, absent fathers, fathers who’ve been there but never truly been there, fathers who’ve lost and fathers who just want to find a way to say I love you, to tell their sons what they mean to them and to talk openly about what it means to be a man,” said Stephen Graham.

“When my son turned thirteen, I asked a range of male friends to write him a letter that explained what they believed made a good man, and what advice they would like to give him. Some letters were funny, some were sad, most of them were thoughtful. Stephen and I have a mutual friend, and when I told her about this, she put us in touch, because she knew there was an idea for a book there somewhere. She knew that Stephen and I shared the same commitment to tackling the issues facing young men today,” said Orly Klein.

Emily Meehan, SVP, Publisher, Union Square & Co., said: “We’re thrilled to partner with Stephen and Orly on this powerful project. Adolescence sparked a cultural wave that ignited vital dialogue about masculinity, mental health, and the realities facing young people today. As a publisher and a parent, I found myself asking “What happens now?” LETTERS TO OUR SONS answers that question.  This book isn’t just timely—it will be transformative.”

Submissions open on Wednesday, October 15, 2025. Details on how to enter and T&Cs can be found at www.letterstooursons.co.uk
