A year with many productions!

2025 has been one of my most productive years in video game development. In total, I’ve coded and drawn sprites for seven productions that I’m very happy with, for Atari 2600 (4) and Commodore 64 (3). I set aside mobile development, where I have a fairly extensive portfolio, and focused entirely on developing games for retro systems with over 40 years on the market. It was a well-thought-out decision. Although I’ve had hundreds of thousands of downloads on mobile, there’s one aspect of retro that I’ve loved: the close-knit communities. You know who’s playing your games, you see gameplay videos on YouTube and Twitch, and that means that even though downloads are only in the hundreds or thousands per game, you feel a connection with the users that you can never have on PC or mobile.

Those who know me well know that making video games today is a hobby for me, and more than that, a mental exercise at 55 years old. I left behind the fame and money as a developer in the decade when my old studio, Mediatech, shone throughout Latin America from 1995 to 2005. Today, I enjoy making games for friends and people my age who refuse to stop playing and who don’t feel comfortable with modern games. It gives me great happiness to bring them joy with my creations, and incidentally, I keep my character «Umi» in the spotlight after almost 30 years.

This year my games have been reviewed on many websites and even in the new Spanish Microhobby magazine, which makes me very happy and serves to attract new players to my portfolio, which in the end is what keeps me going in this wonderful career as a video game designer.

KabutoCoder Atari 2600

At the end of October 2024, I released my first game for the Atari 2600 called «Invasion», which was very well received by the current Atari scene. Since then, I’ve developed three more games using the same DPC+ kernel used in major productions from Activision and Imagic in the commercial era.

The second game I released was «Mazinger 85», reminiscent of the Mazinger Z game I started developing on the Commodore 64 in 1985 and never finished. The only thing I had left was an old photo negative with screenshots from a CRT TV.

The third game, called «Umi Colors» is a game with a color mechanic where the character must transform into their color version, allowing them to kill aliens with the same color. It was a fast-paced game with 30 levels to overcome, and it’s based on my game «Umi 64» developed during the pandemic for the C64.

And finally, «Umi Machines» another script pulled from the vault of memories where the main mode is for two players, evoking the games of my childhood back in 1979, where I played for hours and hours with my siblings, cousins, and friends in what Atari called the family video game.

Invasion Atari 2600

Recently I decided that I had to make my first game for the only console I have ever loved, the Atari 2600, it arrived at my house in 1979 and since I inserted the first cartridge “Combat” and played it a couple of hours with my brothers, at that moment I decided at my 9 years old that I was going to become a video game developer. I made it, I have gone through many systems and I have hundreds of thousands of players of my works, but I was missing before I died to create a catalog of games for the system that drove me. So this game is the first but not the last.

 

 

Story

Cosmic beings must invade the planet Sunset to settle before their own world is consumed by a cesspool in space. Your mission is to clear the planet’s surface in each level before the resupply ships land. In each level, you will face three enemies that you must hit multiple times to eliminate them and clear the area, allowing the ships to land safely. As you advance, the enemies will become faster and more resistant to your bombs, and the enemy fleet will also appear blocking your way to the runway.

This Atari 2600 game challenges you to fight for the survival of your species, no matter the cost.

How to play

You must drive your ship with the joystick in any direction on the screen and go approaching the runway to open fire on the enemies, if you press the fire button you will release a bomb towards them and if you leave it pressed you will get a machine gun type burst that will give you more firepower to eliminate them before your supply ship reaches the runway. Sometimes it’s good to move from right to left while firing to make the bombs more accurate.

At higher levels the fleet of enemy ships appears, although they don’t attack you they block your way to the runway, if you touch one of them once you lose the game and start again, you also lose if you don’t clear the runway of enemies before your supply ship lands on it.

 

Scoring

The lowest enemy gives 150 points, the one in the middle 100 and the one at the top 50 points. When you pass to the next level you are rewarded with 1000 additional points.

Game variations

Game 1: the real retro, you must manage to sweep the enemies as soon as possible so that your supply ship can land level after level.

Game 2: identical to the first but instead of one enemy per line there are three, giving you the possibility to hit any of them and make them disappear faster from the runway.

Kikaiju LightGun
Kikaijus or mechanical beasts are attacking the city, the army was almost annihilated on the outskirts of it, the Red Cross is sending medicines and supplies to the military forces, your mission is to use a powerful laser beam to destroy the Kikaijus and not Let them destroy the ships and cars of the Red Cross. You have 3 lives to achieve it, in each wave you must defend the red cross by not letting the monsters destroy their supplies, if any of them are destroyed you lose a life and start the wave again, there are 12 levels to successfully complete your mission.

This new cartridge for the neoretro AT64 console opens the portfolio of light gun games, you will feel yourself shooting with your fingers on the screen as if it were a light gun for arcade games.

When the Vega Empire first attacked Earth, Duke Fleed was forced to use Goldorak to fight them, quickly beginning the fight to keep the planet safe.

This is the story of my new game «Goldorak Shooting Gallery» that comes to continue the series of my vertical shooting games for mobile phones, a series inspired by the mechanics of the old «Bank Panic» by Sega in 1984, where you are presented in screen enemies and friends, losing precisely by eliminating the good guys and you get points for eliminating the bad guys.
You must destroy all those Saucer Beasts on the screen!
Accumulate the most points and be careful with the Saucer Beasts as they attack you with very powerful missiles, you must also be careful not to hit your friends such as planes and tanks of the earth’s self-defense forces. Each enemy missile hit or each hit on your allies subtracts one life, on the tenth hit the game ends and you have to start again.
The game begins in Goldorak’s cockpit and you can select different weapons with your finger in the cockpit of this powerful robot:
✓ Space Thunder (スペースサンダー Supēsu Sandā), lightning from the horns on the head makes the Saucer Beasts explode
✓ Hand Beam (ハンドビーム Hando Bīmu), melts Saucer Beasts and is a weapon that you can direct with your finger on the screen

Get the highest number of points before your 10 lives run out and you can be in the TOP TEN of the world ranking in the Super Robots games.

In my daily life, I am a businessman by day and a video game developer by night. Now I am going to talk to you about my role as an expert in traditional commerce and, above all, in these last 9 years as a specialist in e-commerce and marketplaces.

I arrived in Colombia from Venezuela at the beginning of 2015, I had already been Country Manager of CD Distribution Corporation for 12 years, a very large video game distributor that served the ROLA market (all of LATAM without Mexico or Brazil), of course in the first years they were very good in Venezuela, managing to sell on average about $4MM in dollars annually, but that gradually decreased due to the Venezuelan crisis and my boss in 2014 told me that he wanted me to go to another territory, he gave me the choice between Chile, Peru, Panama and Colombia, of course I chose Colombia because of the proximity and because I feel that we are the same people with the same customs.

In Venezuela I had already had experiences in e-commerce with Mercado Libre in its earliest versions but nothing to do with what I was going to experience in Colombia. The first chain store that jumped on the bandwagon strongly in 2015 was Falabella with its B2B, I remember coding the first products with a very high margin in those years but with a marginal sale compared to physical sales in stores. I remember having met their first digital department with no more than 10 people, today there are thousands of people who are in those teams both in that retail and in the rest of the country.

There have been years of learning to connect buyers who do not go to a shopping center but must be captured through publications with good photographs, good titles that invite them to buy, descriptions highly treated with the help of artificial intelligence and participating in important commercial campaigns such as HOT SALES or BLACK FRIDAY.

Right now I am in training by an Argentine consultancy called DomUp Digital to be one of the first 20 Mercado Libre consultants in Colombia, something that I am very passionate about because I would like to help many new digital sellers to travel this path in a kinder way for their growth in e-commerce.

José Rafael (KabutoCoder) founded Mediatech in 1995 with a dream to fulfill, to create the first video game studio in Venezuela, productions such as «The Multimedia Encyclopedia», «The Adventures of Umi» in its 5 editions and the super robot games «Mazinger Zeta» achieved that dream that materialized as a company with more than 15 employees that had a turnover for a decade until its closure in 2005 after the incident with the government of Hugo Chávez over the game «Mazinger Z saves Venezuela.»

From 2005 to 2012, Kabuto Coder dedicated himself in the shadows to working in other commercial areas but continued developing video games in the shadows for the Children’s Museum of Caracas and venturing into mobile games with productions such as «Color Machine» for iOS, which was its first hit with more than 20,000 downloads a few months after being released back in 2011.

Already in 2015 he changed the name of Mediatech to Mediatech Game Studio as a personal signature with the launch of the game «Umi Force Unlimited» for Android and iOS, but always on the networks and in the world of development he was known as Kabuto after the mythical hero of childhood inspiration «Koji Kabuto» the pilot of Mazinger Z, so in this 2024 I have unified all my networks, developer accounts and also a commercial establishment in Colombia as «KabutoCoder», so from now on it will be the image and name with which you can find me.

For a long time now, my most nostalgic fans have asked me to upload the CD´s of these wonderful educational games that made history in Venezuela and placed my studio as the pioneer of video game development in 1995. I leave you the backups in ISO format of the originals so that they can enjoy them and even if they have preschool children they are still valid to educate them in a fun way.

Description:

«Las Aventuras de Umi» is an Educational App that allows parents to use their Android smartphones, tablets or PC´s so that their young children learn by playing, it has spanish and mathematics content evaluated by educators and that are aimed at children aged 3 to 8 years. All the designs of Umi and her friends are friendly and the interfaces are very easy to use so that the little ones can handle the content very easily and comfortably.

It is perfect so that children who do not speak Spanish can learn it and use it as a complementary tool for Spanish courses for children.

History:

«Las Aventuras de Umi» is a compendium of selected parts of the content of the famous educational series Umi that was very successful in the 90’s in Venezuela, Umi became the best-selling learning software in Latin America with hundreds of thousands of units. It had 5 editions between 1996 and 2001, The Adventures of Umi, Umi in the world of numbers, Umi in the world of letters, Umi 4 Games and Umi back to the world of letters. All this content was for PC but we know that nowadays young children have more access to their parents’ cell phones than to their computers, that is why the intention of placing the App within their reach.

Because it is such an old game, it is best to install and play it in a virtual machine with Windows XP with the INDEO 5 drivers that you can download here as well. In my case, I did it with the Oracle VirtualBox with 1GB of RAM and 10GB of disk, more than enough to fully run the game.

As you know the promise of my fantasy console «AT64» is at least one new game cartridge every month, at this moment I am finishing «Captain Bici» and a new one called «Kikaiju Lightpen» which as you can tell is the Introduction to light gun games in the product.

I have several ideas for this type of game that will use touch as the light gun with its typical flickering effect that we all loved in the 80’s on our 8-bit computers. In the update you will notice a change in the interface and icons that indicate the arrival of this type of games. I hope to finish at least one of the two before the end of February.

On the other hand, I have been finishing a game highly anticipated by fans for a long time, that of «Grandizer» or as our French friends say «Goldorak», the game was ready for months but the artist who helps me with the character assets and HUD He had an accident and broke his right arm, the one he used to illustrate. I send a big hug to Julieta Baudo, a great Argentine artist. This week he resumed work and if everything goes well we should have the game ready by the end of March 2024.

I’ll try to have a summary W.I.P. at least every other Friday so they know how the projects and updates of my games are going.
