Groundsource is a new AI-powered methodology that transforms millions of public reports into a high-quality record of historical disaster data to aid crisis prediction — starting with flash floods in urban areas. Groundsource used Gemini to analyze decades of public reports and identified over 2.6 million historical flood events from 150+ countries. It then used Google Maps to determine precise geographic boundaries for each event to create a dataset focused on flash floods. That data was used to train a new mode designed to help predict flash floods in urban areas up to 24 hours in advance. These urban flash flood forecasts are now available in Google’s Flood Hub, marking a significant expansion to our flood forecasting capabilities. We're also open-sourcing Groundsource to help our partners and scientists scale their impact, particularly in regions that have lacked historical flash flooding data. AlphaGo won with “Move 37,” a play so unconventional, experts thought it was a mistake. This win proved AI could exhibit genuine reasoning and intuition, marking the true start of the modern AI era and a decade of scientific discovery: 🧬 Scientific breakthroughs: The success of AlphaGo demonstrated the potential for AI to help us better understand the vast complexities of the physical world. This led to AlphaFold, which solved a 50-year "protein folding" grand challenge. This work was recognized with the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Demis Hassabis and John Jumper on behalf of the AlphaFold team. 🔢 Mathematical reasoning: AlphaGo’s tech helped AlphaProof, paired with AlphaGeometry, to become the first AI systems to earn silver at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).
