What the heck is CMS, CM & CMP? There’s a lot of confusion right now around CMS, CM, and CMP and honestly, it’s understandable. These terms are being used interchangeably in conversations about the DPDP Act, even though they mean very different things. So let’s simplify this. A Consent Management System (CMS) is what an organization uses internally to collect & manage user consent and data. It handles responsibility of "Informed Consent", tracks what data was collected, for what purpose, how long it can be used, and when it must be deleted and specifics are provided in BRD-CMS. Think of it as the backbone of compliance, a data privacy and processing controller that is part of your system. Every serious data fiduciary will need one specially, if you’re business is primarily reliant on data collection and processing. While companies can build their own CMS, most will rely on specialized solutions because getting this right is technically complex, compliance-heavy and time consuming. Now, a Consent Manager (CM) is something else entirely. It is not software. It is going to be DPB-approved entity that represents the individual, the data principal in the digital world. Its job is to help individuals give, manage, or withdraw consent across different platforms. In many ways, the Consent Manager acts as the digital voice of the user, with defined rights, responsibilities, and regulatory oversight. You can’t just “become” a Consent Manager; you have to be approved to play that role and checklist can be provided on request. Then comes the Consent Management Platform (CMP) that is the part people actually see, use and interact with to have control of data. It’s the interface where users can view their data, understand who is using it, and manage their permissions. A CMP makes data ownership real, simple and in-control of data principal. It turns the idea of consent into something visible and actionable. But having a CMS does not automatically make someone a Consent Manager, and it extends your CMS capabilities and makes it data principal friendly. In simple terms: - The CMS belongs to the technology system. - The CM represents the user. - The CMP is the window through which the user interacts with the system. For India’s DPDP framework to work at scale, these three must work together seamlessly and therefore Interoperability is not optional, it’s foundational. And this is how we move from compliance on paper to trust in practice. Agencies that only know how to “run accounts” are going extinct. Tech is catching up fast, but the future isn’t agencies vs. tech. It’s agencies with tech. They will converge. The smartest operators I know are already blending strategy, creative, and data. They’re building systems that make human decisions more accurate, not replacing humans. The agency of the future won’t be a service. It’ll be a strategic engine powered by tech.

"We need a website refresh." Those words strike fear into many SaaS leaders' hearts. It feels tactical. Expensive. A vanity project. But here's what I've learned working with multiple established B2B SaaS companies: What looks like a website problem is almost always a MESSAGING problem. We faced this exact challenge at one SaaS company. We started immediately on refining our ICP and building a compelling strategic narrative and then quickly rolled out the new message to a newly redesigned site. Our website redesign was a bold move—we chose the most creative concept presented by the agency that positioned us unlike anyone else in our space. Our employees loved it, prospects found it intriguing, and it initially achieved our goal: standing out in a crowded field with much bigger but more boring companies. But after being in-market for a while with this "clever" site built on our initial strategic narrative, the data told a different story. Our demo-to-opportunity conversion was lower than expected. Prospects arrived at sales meetings confused about what we actually did. 😬 Instead of defaulting to another website redesign, we did something powerful: we listened to customers, brainstormed with frontline client teams, and studied newly available data. Here's what that looked like: • Analyzed 12+ months of sales calls to identify how prospects described their challenges • Interviewed customers about how they actually use our solution (not how we thought they did) • Examined usage data to find the most-used features and five-year retention and upsell data to see which customers appeared to be getting the most value • Gathered customer-facing teams to understand what customers told us were the most compelling reasons they bought and continue renewing • Conducted competitive analysis to clarify our unique value • Led an executive offsite dissecting our most successful customer relationships, SWOT and competitor SWOT The result? A tighter strategic narrative and messaging framework that spoke more directly to customer pain points—a significant evolution from our first attempt a year earlier. Then, for our second website iteration, we partnered with Anthony Pierri 🎸 at FletchPMM (the GOAT of home page messaging) and built an entirely new homepage grounded in this research-backed story. When we launched this new customer-driven site: ▶️ Demo-to-pipeline conversion improved by 50%+ ▶️ We maintained the same inbound pipeline even after CUTTING ad spend by half ▶️ Sales cycles shortened as prospects arrived better qualified The hard truth for every SaaS leader: Your intuition about your market is probably wrong. The way you talk about your solution likely misses the mark. The fix isn't just a creative redesign. It's taking a humble step back, doing systematic customer research and having the courage to rebuild your story from scratch—even if that means scrapping work that seemed innovative when launched.

I've found a pattern for why some agencies are crushing it right now and others are barely making payroll. I did some qualitative research over the past two months in prep for a recent webinar. Combining that with the quantitative research from our friends at Promethean Research, here's what I found. Margin squeeze is real: roughly 73% of agencies have felt the pinch over the past two years, and avg margins have slipped from ~16% down to about 14%. At the same time, the top shops are pulling in profit margins of 38%+. In the past I've able to see external factors that caused the discrepancy, but this time it's mostly internal factors on how they operate. They’re crystal clear about who they serve, what they do, and why they rock. Agencies with strong positioning attract the right clients without having to chase them. Pricing is dynamic, not default. They mix value-based, performance-based, time-and-materials (T&M), and hybrid pricing models based on what is best for the project, most comfortable for the client, and appropriately distributes the risk. They sell outcomes, not time or process. Conversations focus on results and new capabilities, not deliverables or time to ship. AI is woven into everything. These agencies integrate AI into marketing, delivery, and operations for efficiency and scale. And they started years ago. They track key metrics and take action accordingly. Like net profit margin, utilization rate, client retention, revenue per employee, and more. The bottom line is that your focus on verticals or service offerings is less important than your mindset and openness to change. Treat clients as partners, price based on outcomes, and lean into AI and automation. That combination is how the top 20% are beating the average margin by 2–3 times. If your agency’s margins are stuck, don’t look to external factors as the reason. Instead, look inside where you can have an impact. Clarify your positioning, rethink who your best clients are, price accordingly, deliver bold results, and promote the hell out of them. Oh, and weave AI into your DNA.
