PoE 3.28, titled Mirage, released on March 6th (PDT) for PC, Mac, and consoles. In this update, exiles will encounter the sinister Faridun cult and uncover their hidden secrets. As always, Mirage expansion introduces a brand-new Challenge League, a host of new and reworked skill and support gems, significant endgame content changes, and numerous features to enhance the gameplay experience. Let's take a look at some of the changes you should be aware of:
- The Mirage Challenge League: In the 3.28 Mirage Challenge League, you must find the souls of Djinn imprisoned by Afarud and try to rescue them. This Mirage almost completely replicates the layout of the existing map, where players must cut chains scattered throughout the area by defeating nearby monsters. Successfully rescuing them will earn you generous rewards!
- Wish Modifiers: Before entering Astral Realm (Mirror Area), players can choose one of three wishes from NPC Varashta. These wishes are optional modifiers that can alter the way the instance works, increase loot drops or character abilities, and thus enhance specific mechanics of that instance.
- New Scion Ascendancy: The beloved optional Ascendancy from Legacy of Phrecia, Scavenger, also added to the base game in the 3.28 expansion as Antiquarian, grants players exclusive effects to their existing unique items.
- 40+ Exceptional Support Gems: Mirage also introduces over 40 new Support Gems, categorized as Exceptional. This significantly expands the existing gem system and provides players with more ways to customize their builds in the late game.
- Endgame Overhaul: Patch 3.28 also includes several changes to the endgame system, including changes to how Voidstones work, balance adjustments to Scarabs, and a rework of Tier 17 Maps.
- Atlas Rework: Map layout restrictions have been removed, replaced by universal tiered maps. Players no longer need specific map items to enter certain map areas. Instead, a specific tier of map item can open any map in Atlas at or below that tier.
- Quality of Life Changes: This expansion also introduces a range of quality of life improvements. You can now collect trades in the currency exchange, hover your mouse over the sales history of items in Asynchronous Trade, and more. Making your gaming life easier!
Get ready for Mirage, level up now, grow quickly, and dominate patch 3.28!

About Path of Exile 2
Path of Exile 2 is a free-to-play MMORPG developed and published by Grinding Gear Games. The sequel to 2013’s Path of Exile, the game launches in paid Early Access on Windows PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and Series S at 11am PST on December 6, 2024.
Like the original, Path of Exile 2 is a top-down action-RPG that allows up to six players to play cooperatively. Set several years after the events of the original Path of Exile, you’ll return to the dark world of Wraeclast to try to put an end to the spreading corruption. Players will traverse the deadly continent of Wraeclast and experience a variety of immersive cultures as they battle against various forms of evil, including fighting Corrupted abominations and Divine creations, all of which have skills that can be combined. In Path of Exile 2, all you have to do is choose your own skills, wear the equipment of your choice, and build a powerful build with a unique combat style to clear all evil enemies and completely change the fate of Wraeclast!
PoE 2 will run in parallel with the first game, with its own set of seasonal leagues, and it is completely different. Many systems are handled significantly differently compared to the previous game. Here are the features you need to pay attention to in PoE 2:
1. New Campaign
In Path of Exile 2, players will enter a brand new campaign, which takes place several years after the events of the first game. The campaign contains six acts, including new areas, towns and characters, as well as some returning favorites.
2. League Mechanics
One of the standout features of the original PoE was its league system, which launched a new temporary challenge league every few months with its own unique mechanics and rewards. Path of Exile 2 is likely to continue to push the boundaries, offering new league mechanics and features to introduce new content to the game.
3. 12 Character Classes
PoE 2 will have a total of 12 character classes, 6 of which are returning from PoE 1. Each class has three Ascendancy subclasses that they can specialize in.
4. New Endgame
At the end of Path of Exile 2’s six-act campaign, you’ll gain access to the endgame. There are over 100 endgame maps in POE 2, and each one has its own boss fights and modifiers that enable remastered versions of many of Path of Exile’s past leagues.
5. Equipment System
POE 2 features hundreds of equipment base types for you to discover as you explore the continent of Wraeclast. The maps feature a variety of magical modifiers, but unique variants with ancient powers can also be found.
6. Customizable Skill System
Any class can use any Skill Gem, which can be further modified with up to 5 Support Gems to completely change how the skill works. In addition, you can now Dual-Specialise your passive skill tree, switching between two very different fighting styles at any time.
7. Graphics Overhaul
Path of Exile 2 is powered by a brand new graphics engine with high-fidelity visuals, including detailed character models, realistic lighting, and much-improved environment design. Every aspect of the game looks sharper and more detailed without sacrificing the fast-paced combat of PoE.
All in all, with these new features and improvements, PoE 2 promises to be one of the most exciting action RPGs in recent years.
Path Of Exile News
View MoreA significant new Harvest craft has been introduced in Path of Exile 3.28.0c, allowing you to randomly convert an Astrolabe into another type.
Harvest now hosts two high-value crafts simultaneously: the ability to reforge Astrolabes and to duplicate Divination Cards. Consequently, any farming strategy centered around Harvest has instantly become remarkably lucrative. What's more, the execution is incredibly straightforward compared to other approaches.
Core Strategy
This strategy revolves around repeatedly engaging with Harvest mechanic. A key point: you do not need Crop Rotation passive node. This keeps the entire process exceptionally simple.
Upon entering a map, your priority is to quickly defeat the boss. This removes Eldritch altar options that would otherwise appear. After that, clear every single monster in the map, favoring altar modifiers that grant increased Quantity of Items Dropped whenever possible. These choices boost the overall Zone Quantity, which directly translates to more Lifeforce dropping from every monster within Harvest. Once the map is cleared, enter Harvest and harvest.
After finishing in Harvest, step into the map's Mirage and repeat the exact same steps. Since we're forgoing Crop Rotation, your task within Harvest is simple: survey all the different Plots and select the crop with the highest potential value.
Map Preparation
Preparing your maps is equally straightforward. It's highly recommended to use Corrupted 8-mod maps. If you have access to Tier 16.5 maps, they are even better, as your primary goal is to stack high Item Quantity and Pack Size modifiers on the area.
You can decide whether to apply Delirium to your maps. This adds more monsters to the overall zone, which is beneficial. However, note that modifiers promising "more Scarabs" or "more Currency" do not increase Lifeforce drops. They only influence the base currency that drops. Therefore, if you don't have Tier 16.5 maps, standard Tier 16 maps work perfectly fine.
Scarab Setup
This strategy requires very few Scarabs, offering significant flexibility in the remaining slots.
Essential
- Harvest Scarab of Doubling: This causes monsters to have double life and, crucially, drop double Lifeforce – effectively doubling your yield from them.
- Harvest Scarab of Cornucopia: This guarantees an additional T4 seed of each color appears within Harvest.
These two Scarabs together ensure you encounter rare and magic T4 monsters in almost every single map. T4 monsters typically drop between 800 and 1600 Lifeforce. Combined with the duplication from the passive tree and this Scarab, the returns are substantial. You can expect at least one T4 monster per map, often two or three, and with the additional Harvest in Mirage, you'll frequently face five to seven T4s per map.
Optional
- Influencing Scarab of Hordes: Increases monster count in influenced areas by 40%.
- Cartography Scarab of Risk: Adds two entirely random modifiers to your map (use with caution).
- Scarab of Monstrous Lineage: Boosts magic monster pack size by 40%.
- Cartography Scarab of Corruption: Causes non-unique maps dropped in the area to have 8 modifiers.
Cartography Scarab of Corruption is highly recommended in one of your flexible slots. This strategy consumes a lot of 8-mod maps, and this Scarab helps sustain your pool. The remaining slots can be filled with any Scarabs that increase the overall monster count.
Important: Scarab of Wisps and Horned Scarab of Nemeses are ineffective for this strategy. While extra modifiers make monsters tougher, they don't grant additional Lifeforce. Scarab of Wisps simply doesn't function here. Avoid using them.
Astrolabe
- Fruiting Astrolabe: Ensures maps in the area contain Harvest.
This is the only logical choice. It saves you a significant number of passive points on your Atlas tree, which can then be invested elsewhere for greater value. It can offer modifiers like converting extra monsters to T3/T4, causing monsters to drop more currency, or preventing other crops from withering.
Atlas Passive Tree
Allocate almost every notable node related to Harvest. The sole exception is the node for "chance to spawn Harvest," as you are guaranteeing it through your Astrolabe.
Invest points in nodes that block other content, ensuring that your Mirages will only feature Harvest encounters.
Take Shaping the Mountains, Shaping the Skies, and their small passive precursors to increase the number of rare and magic monsters.
Allocate every node that grants increased effect of map modifiers and increased pack size.
It's also worth picking up some Scarab drop chance nodes. While not a primary income source, the extra Scarabs are a welcome bonus. Don't forget the central notable for increased Item Quantity.
Key Notable Nodes
Here are some specific, powerful nodes to look for:
- Synthesised Stability: Allows you to complete an entire quadrant simply by running a single map.
- Bumper Crop: Increases the chance for an additional crop to appear in Harvest.
- Bountiful Harvest: Results in more monsters appearing within each crop.
- Heart of the Grove: Improves the chance to harvest crops and gives unselected crops a chance not to wither.
- Doubling Season: Grants a 10% chance for Lifeforce drops to be doubled, stacking additively with Scarab effect.
Why Skip Crop Rotation?
While Crop Rotation keystone can be interesting, it has a significant downside here. Within Harvest found in Mirage, special T3 Corpse-Grown monsters can appear. These monsters drop a special PoE currency, Crystallised Rancour, along with a substantial amount of Lifeforce.
However, if you allocate Crop Rotation, all Harvest monster levels are locked to 1. This means you will never encounter these Corpse-Grown monsters in your Mirage Harvests, causing you to miss out on their valuable drops.
Evaluating Crop Value
Currently, Vivid Crystallised Lifeforce and Primal Crystallised Lifeforce hold the highest value. This is because Primal Lifeforce fuels Astrolabe reforging craft, and Vivid Lifeforce is used for duplicating Divination Cards.
Monsters fall into four tiers:
- Monsters with grey or white names are T1 and T2; their Lifeforce yield is negligible.
- T3 monsters are identifiable by their blue nameplates.
- T4 monsters have a distinct brown nameplate.
Always prioritize a crop containing a T4 monster. The only exception is if a single plot contains two T4 monsters. In that case, assess the current market rate for exchanging Primal and Vivid Lifeforce into Divine Orbs and choose the color that offers the higher value.
To summarize, this is an exceptionally simple, reliable, and high-reward strategy. It's more than viable as a steady, long-term farming method for the entire League and is highly recommended for you to try.
Week two of Path of Exile 3.28 League is here, and officials have just deployed Patch 3.28.0c. This is another substantial update, packed with both content adjustments and bug fixes.
You probably don't have the patience to go through every line with a fine-tooth comb, so let's break down the most important parts of this patch.
Wish for Rust and Wish for Terror
The most significant changes in Patch 3.28.0c are to Wish for Rust and Wish for Terror. Let's look at what they do.
- Wish for Rust: Ridan, of the Afarud will now appear within Mirage alongside the final Map Boss.
- Wish for Terror: The Pinnacle Atlas Boss from The Feared will now appear within Mirage alongside the final Map Boss.
These two Wishes have been adjusted so that Ridan and Pinnacle Boss appear immediately upon breaking Astral Chain, rather than requiring you to find the boss first.
This change means you'll encounter these specific Wishes more frequently than before. In terms of difficulty, the impact is minimal—it might even be slightly easier, as you'll only face one boss in the final arena.
If you were previously utilizing Maven Witness mechanic (which could duplicate bosses), these two Wishes could lead to three or four bosses in the arena, potentially multiplying your PoE currency returns by three or four times! Consequently, this change is a significant nerf to that specific strategy.
For most other strategies, however, this is a buff. They no longer require Varashta to spawn right next to the map boss. The only prerequisite now is that your area level is sufficiently high.
New Wishes
Three new Wishes have also been added:
- Wish For Flame: Grants a Coin of Power upon breaking Astral Chain.
- Wish For Tides: Grants a Coin of Knowledge upon breaking Astral Chain.
- Wish For Sands: Grants a Coin of Skill upon breaking Astral Chain.
This is a powerful addition. These Coins are the core borrowed power for the league. While rare, they aren't impossibly so, and this provides a brand new avenue for players to acquire them.
Even if these Wishes are uncommon, even a small boost to their overall drop rate can feel significant. So, keep an eye out for these Wishes—they're a solid choice whenever they appear. Even if you don't need a specific Coin right now, you almost certainly will later.
Astrolabe Adjustments
This change makes Harvest the premier source for acquiring League-specific Astrolabes, replacing methods like defeating Incarnations or running maps unaffected by an Astrolabe.
A new option has been added to Harvest crafting, allowing you to destroy an off-meta, less popular Astrolabe for a chance to obtain a Breach Astrolabe.
This isn't a purely negative change; it's one that has divided the community. Ultimately, its reception heavily depends on how much a player engages with Trade. This adjustment makes the experience for those who do trade somewhat less convenient than before. Some players are in favor of it, as it means they can avoid frequent trading and focus more on their preferred type of content.
If your current strategy utilizes an off-meta Astrolabe, you might find yourself in economic competition with players you previously didn't compete with for resources. Most notably, this change currently establishes Harvest as the optimal method for acquiring League-specific Astrolabes.
This change strengthens meta strategies while slightly weakening off-meta ones. Since there are many players on both sides, it's easy to see why opinions on it are split.
Quality of Life Improvements
Beyond the economically significant changes, Patch 3.28.0c also focuses heavily on QoL.
Mirage Map Art
Empowered Mirage Map items now feature special artwork. This is a classic QoL improvement, but it's a particularly welcome one this league. A major drawback of these maps previously was their lack of visibility in the stash. Now, with their unique icons, you can instantly identify your maps at a glance.
Lost Shipment
All chests in Lost Shipment encounters, except for the central one, can now be destroyed by dealing damage. The central chest in Lost Shipment also now has a more distinct visual identifier.
Lost Shipment remains a solid source of value. It doesn't require expensive Scarabs to run, and it can occasionally yield some very valuable Tattoos, which can be worth 1 to 2 Divine Orbs.
Map Device
Hovering over a Map or Fragment in your inventory while the map device is open will now highlight the specific device slot where that item can be placed.
In Controller Mode, players can now select a specific Unique Map or Boss Fragment in their inventory to navigate directly to its corresponding location on Atlas and place the item into Map Device.
Map stash tab capacity has been increased for Conqueror and Elder Guardian map types.
These QoL improvements for mapping are all very practical, especially for controller users, saving a significant amount of time.
Volatile Vaal Orb
Hovering Volatile Vaal Orb over an item will now display the potential modifier ranges for each stat. This is an incredibly useful change, as players were often unclear about exactly what Volatile Vaal Orb could and could not affect. This will make its effects perfectly clear.
Overall, Patch 3.28.0c will have some impact on the economy, but for the majority of players, it's not a massive upheaval. It's not going to suddenly cause rampant inflation or anything like that. Most of its effects are improvements, making it a solid and welcome patch.
Many players prefer to experience Path of Exile 3.28 as a solo, single-player adventure, tackling all the content by themselves without engaging in trade with others. The downside to this approach, however, is that it can be slower to amass currency.
Glacial Cascade Miner Elementalist is a build perfectly suited for solo play. It deals high damage from the very beginning and remains impressive in the endgame. While its survivability is average, its excellent slowing capabilities mean you won't find yourself dying too easily.
Build Performance
The core skill of this setup is Glacial Cascade, triggered through the mine mechanic. This build boasts tremendous damage output, easily reaching the 10 million damage-per-second mark, which is more than enough to clear the entire Atlas.
This makes most Pinnacle bosses exceptionally straightforward. Some are completely overwhelmed, melting within seconds before they can even perform an action. Of course, encounters become slightly more complex for bosses with invulnerability phases.
During these untargetable phases, they will unleash a barrage of skills at you. You might occasionally die against this type of boss, but you will ultimately secure the kill. Overall, it lacks the recovery needed for flawless, deathless runs against all Pinnacle bosses, but its sheer damage output makes clearing all Pinnacle challenges entirely feasible.
Beyond the campaign and endgame bosses, if your goal is to farm PoE currency, Glacial Cascade Miner Elementalist can handle almost all league mechanics with ease, such as Legion and Breach encounters.
Equipment and Skills
Gloom Corona Archdemon Crown:
- Glacial Cascade of the Fissure
- High-Impact Mine
- Minefield
- Charged Mines
- Hypothermia
Doom Mantle Paladin's Hauberk:
- Summon Skitterbots
- Bonechill
- Unbound Ailments
- Enlighten
- Hatred

- Summon Flame Golem
- Summon Stone Golem
- Summon Lightning Golem
- Summon Ice Golem
- Culling Strike
Beast Talons Martyr Gloves:

- Frostbite
- Assassin's Mark
Foulborn Tulborn Opal Wand:
- Shield Charge
- Frostblink
- Bear Trap
Aegis Aurora Champion Kite Shield:
- Automation
- Detonate Mines
- Vaal Molten Shell
In the endgame, you must address survivability, which is why Gloom Corona rare helmet is crucial. It not only provides damage and area of effect bonuses but, more importantly, frees up your chest armour slot for other defensive options.
This build has decent defense against elemental damage, but physical damage mitigation is a definitive weakness. To solve this, you need a chest piece that offers physical damage reduction.
Ideally, your chest armour should have modifiers like additional physical damage reduction, increased armour and energy shield, and bonuses to Endurance Charges. In short, it needs to provide sufficient physical damage mitigation.
With this defensive foundation, you can utilize Molten Shell, especially its Vaal version, for intense fights. This ensures that even if your damage output occasionally dips, you can survive boss attacks and secure the victory.
How to Craft the Helmet?
First, you need an Archdemon Crown base. Its inherent modifiers are "+2 to Level of Socketed Gems" and "-2 to Level of Supported Gems." Both are very useful. Aim for an item level 84 base, as this is the optimal level for the desired modifiers.
Use a Shaper's Exalted Orb to turn it into a Shaper-influenced item. Then, use Essence of Horror to transmute it. You are targeting Essence-specific modifier: "Socketed Gems deal 30% more Elemental Damage."
Continue using Essence of Horror until you also roll the Shaper-influenced suffix: "Socketed Gems are Supported by Level 18 trap and mine damage."
This is a somewhat difficult modifier to land and might take between 50 and 100 essences. If you happen to roll both Hypothermia and trap and mine damage supports, or if both are influence modifiers, you can gamble with an Orb of Dominance to attempt elevating one modifier to a higher tier.
If you only land the trap and mine damage suffix but your suffixes are full and the other suffix is undesirable, you'll need to use an Orb of Annulment to try removing it. The risk is that you might remove Essence modifier. If that fails, you must start over.
If you successfully isolate the two Trap and Mine Damage suffixes, ensure you have at least one empty suffix slot. Then, use Crafting Bench to apply "Suffixes Cannot Be Changed." Next, go to the Horticrafting Station and use "Reforge Critical" craft. This will guarantee the appearance of a critical strike-related modifier.
The most desirable helmet would have all three suffixes: "Trap and Mine Damage," "Critical Strike Chance," and "Socketed Gems are Supported by Increased AoE." To achieve this, you would need to repeat the previous steps and cycle through attempts to land the increased Area of Effect support, a process that can be quite resource-intensive.
Passive Tree Masteries
Mine Mastery: Detonating Mines recovers some damage, increases damage enemies take, and reduces damage you take.
- Mana Mastery: Improves mana reservation efficiency.
- Critical Mastery: Increases critical strike damage multiplier against unique enemies.
- Energy Shield Mastery: Grants a chance for some chaos damage to not bypass energy shield.
- Charge Mastery: Extends charge duration.
- Life Mastery: Increases maximum life if your equipped armour has no life modifiers.
- Cold Mastery: Reduces fire resistance and grants +1 to level of all cold skill gems.
This overview covers the essential information for Glacial Cascade Miner Elementalist. We hope it helps you successfully clear all the content PoE 3.28 has to offer.
Path Of Exile 2 News
View MorePath of Exile 2 The Last of the Druids Race Event will begin on March 29th at PDT. This event has no player restrictions; all players can participate. The addition of the new Druid class is sure to make the upcoming racing action even more exciting.
Match Maps and Schedule
This event will fully include content from Fate of the Vaal, meaning players will compete for Act 4 Tavakai kills in a fixed Solo Self-Found Fate of the Vaal map environment. Although it's not a Hardcore Event, players will still be subject to a 2.5-minute immobility penalty after dying and respawning.
To join the competition, players need to select the corresponding match on the character selection screen and click the "Join" button. Then, follow the system prompts to create your character. After character creation, the character cannot move until the match begins.
The Last of the Druids Race Event will be held in three sessions, so you have three chances to decide whether to participate:
- Session 1: March 29, 2026, 2 PM CDT
- Session 2: April 5, 2026, 3 PM CDT
- Session 3: April 12, 2026, 3 PM CDT
All times are based on CDT. To see the start time for your time zone, you need to log in to POE 2 and set the correct time zone; these times will then be calibrated.
Participation Class
While there are no restrictions on players, there are restrictions on the classes you can participate in. There are 12 classes in POE 2, but only 8 classes can participate in racing action.
- Ranger
- Sorceress
- Witch
- Monk
- Warrior
- Mercenary
- Huntress
- Druid
Choose the Right Build for Racing Action
To help you excel in this event, we recommend several builds:
Permafrost Bolt Witchhunter for Mercenary
With this build, Mercenary can use highly penetrating ice shards to attack enemies. Defensively, players can use Evasion and Deflection to dodge enemy attacks and the recharging shield from the Sorcery Ward to mitigate some damage that breaks through defenses.
Explosive Gas Grenade Ranger
You'll need to use Explosive Grenade and Gas Grenade to quickly upgrade your Ranger. Building this build requires gaining sufficient experience and upgrading key skills like Crossbow to enhance your Ranger's combat capabilities. Note that to maximize the build's effectiveness, it requires approximately four stages, each with corresponding tasks.
Racing Action Prizes
The developers are offering Demigod's Virtues as rewards. These are extremely rare items, unobtainable through normal means, and a symbol of prestige, representing exceptional skill.
Each race in this Racing Action event will award 8 Demigod's Virtues, one for each class's first-place finisher. Players can choose to keep these items for display or trade them.
In addition, based on the combined data from the three races, the player with the shortest total time in each class will receive one of the new Official Path of Exile 2 Displates. The player with the shortest total time across all three races will also receive a Divination Card blueprint.
Many players are eager to claim these prizes, but some have expressed concerns, saying, "We know we won't get these top prizes, could the developers offer some smaller rewards as consolation?"This is indeed a good suggestion. With The Last of the Druids still some time away from official release, we'll have to wait and see if the developers can further refine the event based on player feedback.
Important Notes
This event will feature even fiercer competition, as The Last of the Druids Race Event is open to both PC and Console, and the prize pool is shared across both platforms. Give it your all!
Character Name
Please ensure you use compliant character names during the competition. Violating these rules will result in disqualification from this event and may disqualify you from future events in the same series.
Issues
Due to a developer-fixed interaction issue between Incinerate and Flame Breath and Oil Grenade in version 0.5.0, these functions will be unavailable in the Gemcutting menu. Please be mindful of this during the competition and avoid wasting your valuable time on this.
Fairness Guaranteed
To ensure a fair and competitive environment, this competition is open to everyone. As long as participants are not official staff, everyone has a chance to win.
Watching the Match
Some players may only wish to spectate. Don't worry, the developer has prepared a dedicated live stream. Players can enter the live stream to watch the matches and hear commentary. Watching the commentary can also help improve your skills. Meanwhile, the official platform also supports joint live streams by players to increase the event's fun factor.
Racing Action is designed to provide a platform for players who want to showcase their skills, so naturally, it attracts a large number of highly skilled participants. If you want to win rare rewards through this event, quickly confirm your class and start practicing!
While Path of Exile 2's complexity doesn't yet rival the first game, it's already quite overwhelming for many new players, to where even with consistent play, there are mechanics you might have overlooked.
Since April of last year, PoE 2 has been continuously expanded with the release of more patches. On one hand, this means you have new skills to play with; on the other hand, it also means you have less time to explore classic hidden mechanics that can enhance your gameplay.
Therefore, this patch will introduce the potential uses and benefits of the penetration mechanic, allowing you to gain more advantages during the remaining Patch 0.4.0.
What is penetration?
In Path of Exile 2, this mechanic allows your attacks to deal hit damage that ignores the target's resistances and penetrates the enemy by a certain amount. Note that damage over time is not affected by penetration.
Penetration is typically tied to a specific resistance type, but not always to a single type of damage.
Sometimes it stacks with other damage types to create elemental penetration, allowing hits with elemental properties like fire or frost to ignore the target's corresponding resistance.
Interestingly, penetration also existed in PoE 1, but it worked differently. In the first game, you could use negative resistance penetration to multiply damage, but Path of Exile 2 doesn't allow this.
Based on the effectiveness of elemental penetration, many players are accustomed to combining the two. However, this often leads to confusion when maximizing damage output.
Other similar mechanisms
Besides penetration, there are two other attack methods in the game that can be used to counter enemy resistances: reduction and inversion.
Theoretically, there are also ignoring resistances, but this function is rather obscure and not very practical, so we won't discuss it further.
The most common source of the inversion effect is Lineage Support Gem Rakiata's Flow, which reads the enemy's resistance value and then inverts it to deal damage, regardless of whether the resistance value is positive or negative.
Common misconceptions about penetration
After Rakiata's Flow appeared in the game, the complex interrelationships between the three resistance mechanics led to serious misconceptions when trying to maximize their build effects.
This not only wastes damage output but also prevents other special buffs or item effects from being fully utilized. Over time, you might mistakenly believe these mechanics are useless and abandon them, especially penetration.
The main reason for this misconception is that enemy elemental resistance modifiers operate in a strict order, and their effects vary drastically when combined with other mechanics.
Generally, your primary goal in enhancing a character through a mechanic is to increase effective DPS, which includes not only the amount of damage you deal but also the debuffs you apply to enemies and their damage mitigation abilities.
The variables involved in these processes are almost endless, easily leading to misunderstandings and ultimately causing you to abandon a penetration-based resistance build.
While seeking help from other mechanics is possible, it can cause you to miss out on additional benefits that should be gained through penetration, thus impacting your PoE 2 currency farming efficiency.
How to properly uitilize penetration?
When dealing damage to monsters using resistance-related mechanics, the game checks resistance status in a strict order, with penetration at the very end of the calculation chain.
Before that, the various elemental resistance reduction effects applied to the monster take effect, altering the enemy's total resistance value. Then, the inversion checks the monster's real-time resistances and reverses their values.
Regardless of the fluctuations in the first two phases, the final penetration effect doesn't change the monster's status; it only affects your current attack.
However, sources of global penetration, such as the corruption enchantment on gloves, are generally ignored and are significantly oversupplied in the market, leading you to mistakenly believe that penetration negatively impacts your primary skills.
Even with a single type of penetration, if you're playing an elemental damage build, most builds only require a few talent points, perhaps a support gem and one or two jewel prefixes, to reach the penetration cap for their primary damage type.
Another key gear is Leopold's Applause. This unique glove allows your attacks to penetrate all elemental resistances by 10%, and its special affix effect is currently the only way in the game to penetrate resistances below 0%.
Finally, it's worth emphasizing Rakiata's Flow again. While this Lineage gem can only be used once per skill, if your attack hits a target and deals normal damage, the actual damage will be higher after resistance calculation.
Furthermore, Rakiata's Flow can reverse all elemental resistances, meaning you can reap all elemental damage bonuses from rings, gloves, and other gear without worrying about resistances.
However, when socketing Rakiata's Flow into your main damage skill gem and using it, you should avoid any means of reducing elemental resistances, because they will debuff the way that you can hit monsters.
In short, to properly utilize penetration to enhance your builds and characters, you need a deep understanding of the mechanics of Path of Exile 2 and be willing to invest time calculating your damage output.
Frankly, this is a hard work that only hardcore gamers are willing to undertake, but if your goal isn't just to play casually, but to become a top player in every league, then mastering this knowledge is essential.
That concludes this article. Whether you found it helpful or not, thank you for reading!
The release of Path of Exile 2 The Last of the Druids patch has sparked a new wave of interest among players, because this patch introduced the new Druid class and its two Ascendancies.
However, to maintain balance in the game's combat environment, the new Ascendancies are not currently the dominant class in the leagues. Some established classes, such as Blood Mage, remain the top choices for top players.
The awkward part is that, with Patch 0.4.0 halfway through, while many builds based on the new Ascendancies have emerged, they are still slightly weaker - when it comes to the strongest Ascendanancy class, you might still think of Blood Mage first.
Based on this, we will analyze why Blood Mage has remained so powerful and whether this Ascendanancy needs to be nerfed.
Blood Mage current status
As a class that existed when PoE 2 was first released, Blood Mage's Ascendancy mechanic involves casting blood magic spells while simultaneously draining enemy life to gain more power.
Based on this, Blood Mage is a very powerful spellcaster, and it synergizes perfectly with the currently popular critical strike casting mechanic in the game.
In the early days of Fate of the Vaal, Blood Mage was also a competitor to Pathfinder, Shaman, and Oracle, but as the league progressed, Blood Mage's ranking rose steadily.
In fact, it was equally powerful and popular in the previous league, though slightly less so than Deadeye, mainly because Temple of Atziri mechanic in Patch 0.4.0 is more suitable for Blood Mage.
In short, Blood Mage currently delivers satisfactory results whether clearing temples in league mechanics or killing bosses for loot in high-tier maps.
The evolution of Blood Mage
It must be acknowledged that Blood Mage was strong from the start, and it has been buffed in almost every subsequent version, which is quite rare for Path of Exile 2, which strives for balance.
For example, initially, one of its skills, Blood Barbs, only added an extra 10% damage, but now the bleed effect it applies to cursed targets is amplified, which is why offensive Blood Mage exists and is so powerful.
It's worth noting that Blood Mage used to have a feature that allowed your critical hits to ignore monster armor. However, this effect was changed in Patch 0.3.0.
Now, its effect is that for every 4% of health consumed, you gain 1 stack of Life Blink, and potions restore 50% of that health. Additionally, each stack of Life Blink deals extra physical damage.
This modified skill is actually more useful than before because you can use potions to enhance its effect; the only problem is that its cap may be lowered.
The real reasons Blood Mage is so powerful
While synergy with the current league mechanics is important, the true determinant of a class or Ascendancy's strength lies in its inherent skills and talents.
For Blood Mage, the most noteworthy is Sunder the Flesh, which grants a 15% base spell critical strike chance. As you know, critical strike chance is a crucial element in PoE 2, with most builds' late-game damage output depending on it.
Therefore, Sunder the Flesh's effect means it makes many spells more useful, amplifying spell power in combat to levels unmatched by other classes.
Another major reason Blood Mage stands out is its ability to absorb spell damage. If you don't play this Ascendancy, achieving the same effect in-game requires obtaining Covenant Altar Robe.
The tricky part is that this gear is difficult to obtain as a drop, and even through trading, it requires a significant number of orbs. More importantly, it occupies your chest armor slot, depriving you of a defensive option.
Therefore, while Covenant Altar Robe grants additional life remnants and spell power boosts, this comes at the consumption of significant survivability. Comparatively, playing Blood Mage directly is a better choice.
Furthermore, most spellcasters in the game frequently face mana shortages, making mana consumption increasingly difficult to meet as you level up spells, requiring numerous steps to reach the target.
However, Blood Mage can directly choose Blood Magic, then drain life to not only maintain mana but also improve survivability.
Should Blood Mage be nerfed?
Considering all these factors, it's clear that Blood Mage is an extremely versatile class, excelling not only in offensive skills but also in spell-casting, a feat unmatched by other similar classes.
So the question arises: to maintain class balance, should Blood Mage be nerfed? Or is this Ascendancy's apparent strength primarily due to the current weakness of other classes?
Based on current community opinion, the latter view is generally more favored. It's normal for any class to fit well with currently popular gameplay styles; if other classes can't, it's their own fault.
In other words, Blood Mage's perceived strength is actually the level that Ascendancy classes in Path of Exile 2 should reach. What the developers really need to do is strengthen other classes and achieve a balance between mana consumption and exponential skill scaling.
Currently, there are still about two months until Patch 0.5.0, and PoE 2 is planned to release its full version of this year. Therefore, the balance issues between Ascendancy classes should be resolved as soon as possible to avoid hindering the game's further development.
