Engineering Your Inner Peace

Engineering Your Inner Peace

Today, Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj spoke on “Engineering Your Inner Peace” to a packed auditorium at Madras Research Park, Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras). He studied Electrical Engineering at IIT Madras, earning his Bachelor of Technology in 1967. (He later earned his Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering  at Illinois Institute of Technology.)

Crediting the rigorous training he received at IIT Madras, he said that it instilled in him a deep appreciation for the role of hard work, patience, and perseverance in achieving any goal in life. Science and spirituality are two sides of the same coin, the spiritual Master said, as both work towards the betterment of society. Just as scientists present a concept and then conduct experiments to prove or disprove it, so also do the scientists of spirituality—the saints and mystics—conduct experiments within the human body to verify spiritual truths.

Speaking about the tremendous development of science and technology over the last few decades, Sant Rajinder Singh Ji pointed out that while this progress has brought comforts and conveniences of all kinds to our lives, it has not necessarily brought lasting happiness and joy. On the contrary, he said, there is an increased restlessness and anxiety in society today, as our focus remains purely on the physical world, having forgotten our real self. Quoting a poignant verse by the poet saint Sant Darshan Singh Ji Maharaj, he said that while humanity is making new advances into outer space every day, we have yet to reach the heart of our neighbor.

The inner worlds, filled with tremendous Light and beauty, calm and peace, constantly beckon to us, but we are often too absorbed in the outer world to hear their call. We can experience these inner worlds through meditation.

Meditation: The Antidote To Life’s Uncertainties

Meditation: The Antidote To Life’s Uncertainties

This evening at Kirpal Bagh, Delhi, Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj spoke of meditation as the antidote to life’s sorrows and uncertainties. Drawing from a profound verse from the mystic poetry of Sant Darshan Singh Ji Maharaj, the spiritual Master reflected on the problems that confront human beings and offered a clear solution to four kinds of sorrows that trouble humanity.

Sorrow of Expectations: As human beings, we become attached to expectations, whether related to our loved ones or our possessions. We invest in our emotions deeply and naturally hope that our feelings will be reciprocated. When those expectations are not fulfilled, we feel hurt and disappointed.

Sorrow of Physical Illness: The human body is subject to wear and tear. With time, illness may arise either due to our own carelessness or according to our karma. When faced with physical suffering, many become fearful and struggle to accept these realities.

Sorrow of the Illusory World: Sant Rajinder Singh Ji likened the physical world to a dream. The attractions and pulls of the outer world draw our attention outward. Yet as we begin to awaken to our true identity as soul and perceive the difference between the soul and the physical world, we feel the deep longing that comes from separation from the Creator.

Sorrow of Attachment to Loved Ones: Human beings also form strong attachments to family, friends, and relatives. Over time, relationships may weaken due to misunderstandings, changing circumstances, or physical distance, leaving individuals feeling lonely or distressed.

What, then, is the solution to life’s sorrows? The key lies in turning our attention within. These sorrows arise largely from the mistaken belief that we are only this physical body and that God is distant from us. Feeling separate and alone in the world, we experience fear and suffering. Through meditation, however, we withdraw our attention from the outer world and begin to connect with the divine Light of God within. As this inner experience unfolds, we realize our true identity as soul and recognize that the Creator’s protective presence is always with us. With this realization, the pains and anxieties of the outer world lose their hold. The soul begins to experience a deep and lasting peace and bliss. Meditation, Sant Rajinder Singh Ji concluded, is the means through which we can rise above life’s sorrows and discover the joy that already resides within us.
