After vacationing in the Upper Peninsula for the past 20 years, Kalen Carlson, along with her husband Michael and children Jack and Collin, decided to make the move from Chicago in May 2021 after falling in love with a house in Laurium and the surrounding neighborhood. While they didn’t have jobs lined up when they moved, they knew that everything would work out once they arrived.
Now, Kalen is deeply integrated into her community as a licensed CPA at Sturos CPA, P.C. in Calumet where she works with a variety of clients doing audits, taxes, and advisory services. “I love that I’m working with businesses in the Keweenaw,” she said. “It made me realize how many businesses and entrepreneurs we have here, which is really exciting.” Outside of work, she sits on the Laurium Planning Commission and is actively working on initiatives with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.
Like most people, Kalen and her family made the move to the U.P. because they wanted the small town experience with access to the many outdoor activities that the region provides. A supportive community, great schools, and excellent career opportunities were just an added bonus.
“We feel so supported in this community by our neighbors and coworkers,” Kalen said. “It’s a good, safe place to raise our children and send them to a great school like CLK. And I love the ability to be active every day. It’s so easy and accessible to bike on my lunch break or after work.” Kalen noted that she even snowshoes to work when the snow starts to fall.
Kalen encourages others that along with the excellent quality of life the region offers, there are many opportunities available–from remote work to working for one of the amazing businesses in the area. “It’s a great place to build a life,” she said.

]]>“The entire state of Michigan is filled with natural wonders, but the Upper Peninsula might be a shock to folks who think the Midwest is all flat land and farm fields,” she says. “This is a Midwest with mountains and waterfalls and virgin hardwood forests. There are about 1,700 miles of sometimes rugged shoreline along three Great Lakes, bodies of water so big they are known as inland seas. It’s a Midwest with bears and moose and eagles. It’s a Midwest with skies dark enough to regularly see the Milky Way – and sometimes even the northern lights.” Read more here.

Jim French grew up in Illinois and lived in the Western U.S. for 20 years. Today, he calls Michigan’s Upper Peninsula home. As the Vice President of Health, Safety & Risk for Toronto based Lundin Mining Corporation, Jim oversees the company’s global process for injury and illness prevention, safety improvement, crisis management, and emergency response.
Jim’s career first brought him to the U.P. in 2012 as part of Rio Tinto’s Eagle Mine Project team in Marquette. After the startup of Eagle Mine in 2014, he moved to Lundin Mining’s technical office in the UK. In 2017, Jim relocated to Lundin’s global headquarters in downtown Toronto, where he remained until earlier this year. His move back to the U.P. allows him to work remotely, with periodic travel to the headquarters in Toronto, as well as Lundin operations in the US, Chile, Brazil, Portugal, and Sweden.
Jim’s first visit to the U.P. actually came years ago—not for work but for pleasure. In the early 80s, he came to the area to camp, hike, and canoe. He remembers being surprised by the expanse and overall beauty. Like most people, Jim quickly learned after moving here that the quality and pace of life are hard to beat. “Big cities like Toronto offer a lot,” he said. “But Marquette offers a different quality of life. It may be a bit remote at times, but that’s also a plus. And who can argue about living next to Lake Superior?”
While the future for the Upper Peninsula is bright, Jim notes there is still work to be done. The key? Attracting the kinds of businesses that will transform the region into more than just a destination for recreation and tourism. “Even though the U.P. is remote, you can pretty much find whatever you are looking for,” he notes. “You just have to look a little bit harder.”

Kelsey Smith relocated to the Upper Peninsula in August 2019 after accepting a job as the Athletic Communications Director at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. Originally from Islip, New York—located on the south shore of Long Island—Kelsey came to the Upper Peninsula with little knowledge of the area and no family or friends nearby. “I was surprised by how many beautiful places and sights there are to see in the U.P. that I had never heard of previously,” she said.
Luckily, Kelsey found the people in the U.P. to be genuine and kind. “I have been fortunate to meet some of my closest friends here,” she said. “Coming from a very busy area in New York, the slower pace of life took me awhile to get used to… but it has been an enjoyable change.”
Aside from the beauty of the area, Kelsey noted the affordable cost of living in the area as a driver for relocating. Compared to New York and the East Coast, the Upper Peninsula offers a huge benefit in cost of living, especially for young professionals.

Sean Bahr grew up and raised a daughter in International Falls, Minnesota. After she had grown and graduated, Bahr was hungry for new adventures. He was contacted by Marketing Department, Inc. in Houghton and decided to take the leap for the Upper Peninsula.
“I love the job and the area,” said Bahr. “I especially enjoy the summers and live music on the weekends.”
Shortly after he arrived in Houghton, Bahr started texting a high school classmate, Tracy Podpeskar, who was looking for the same type of lifestyle. She decided to move here, too. They fell in love with the Upper Peninsula and each other. Within the first year in the area, the couple bought a house together and share new adventures daily.
Tracy and Sean regularly take weekend trips to various points in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan, using the U.P.’s central location as a landing pad to hang-glide, canoe, kayak, hike, and sightsee at some of the most popular outdoor destinations in the Midwest.
“Tracy and I are having the times of our lives, living and working in this beautiful adventureland,” said Bahr. “I love my flexible schedule and my creative coworkers. It’s an incredible place to live with something new to discover every day, especially if you have an affinity for the outdoors like we do.”

Marshall and Christina Codd traveled the world and lived in different cities across the U.S., but when they moved to Marquette, their children finally found home. The Codds wanted to establish family roots after their adventures here and abroad. They say Marquette is the perfect place to settle.
Marshall is originally from Bruce Crossing, MI. As an Army infantryman in the late ’90s, he was stationed as a funeral honor guardsman at Arlington National Cemetery. He was in D.C. during the 9/11 terrorist attacks and one of the first people to help clean up the Pentagon.
After 9/11, he studied to become a Serbo-Croatian linguist at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in Monterey, CA, where he met his wife, Christina who had enlisted in the WI National Guard and was studying Korean linguistics.
After deployments to Germany and Korea, the Codds had three children – Odin (16), Marek (13), and Lila (11) – and lived briefly in Texas, Arizona, and Colorado.
“When Marshall got closer to retirement, and we were discussing where to live, we both wanted to return to the Midwest,” said Christina. “He always wanted to be back in the U.P., and being from Wisconsin, I agreed.”
The Codds felt Marquette offered the most opportunity for their children. They missed the water and friendly small towns. After retirement, Marshall attended Northern Michigan University for music under the GI Bill while Christina studied clinical lab science.
“He can practically play anything given to him,” said Christina. “We’ve always had instruments in our house. He’s a musician at heart, and our middle son shares the same passion. Marshall doesn’t have a plan with music but he does enjoy performing.”
Christina works in microbiology at U.P. Health System – Marquette, where she conducted community COVID-19 testing and other lab tests involving microbiology. In addition, she works at her sister-in-law’s horse farm and does horse shows and hauling. The Codds have a small hobby farm with eight goats and 25 chickens and are teaching their children about agriculture and small business, making local goatmilk soap products.
The Codds found a perfect home near the Chocolay River on 20 wooded acres. When they’re not at the beach in the summer, the Codd family enjoys swimming, kayaking, or rafting on the river. In the winter, they pull sleds and ski. Lila loves ice skating.
“Our children have been able to make friends and keep them for a long time,” said Christina. “It’s important they have lifelong friends and don’t have to say goodbye after three years. I’m happy we were able to give our children roots here. Settling down in Marquette allows us to live a full, peaceful life.”

IRONWOOD, Mich. – Jamie LaBo and her husband were both working and raising three children in Nashville before moving to the U.P. in January of 2019. She was running a fashion consulting business offering design and sourcing services to the growing fashion industry in Nashville.
Through LinkedIn, LaBo saw the design opportunity with Stormy Kromer as a Product Development and Design Manager with Jacquart Fabric Products, the home of Stormy Kromer. LaBo was intrigued with the prospect of working for an iconic brand out of Michigan.
“My husband is from lower Michigan and we had been really wanting to leave the summer heat of Tennessee and the grind of city life,” said LaBo. “So, I jumped at the opportunity to visit the Ironwood area for an in-person interview with the Stormy Kromer team. I realized that day that I wanted to be both at Stormy Kromer and in the UP.”
Within a few days of interviewing and accepting the offer, Jamie and her husband flew up again to search for a home and explore the area.
“We fell in love,” she said. “The weather really suits us and we generally like everything outdoors. There is so much to explore and enjoy here throughout the year. Our family has gotten to experience nature and the Northwoods in every beautiful season it has to offer. I love working for a Made-In-the-USA fashion company that aligns with my values of quality and hard work.”

A story that most #Yoopers are familiar with, Kylie Bunting was born and raised in Marquette, graduated from Northern Michigan University in 2011, and couldn’t get out of town fast enough. After graduation, Kylie moved to Chicago to start her public relations career at an agency, but as it does, the U.P. called her back!
In Chicago, she met her now-husband, Lee, while he was visiting from England. While Kylie loved her experience in Chicago, she grew tired of the 12 hour work days on top of a two-way hour commute. After eight years, Kylie and Lee decided to go back to their “small town” roots and relocate to Marquette.
Now working at jobs they love, Lee is a Contracts Associate at Surgalign and Kylie is expanding alumni engagement efforts for her alma mater as the Digital Engagement Architect for the Northern Michigan University Alumni Association. They are happily embracing the U.P. lifestyle – spending their days hiking, biking, sledding and teaching their precocious toddler, Beckham, the wonders of the U.P. while awaiting the arrival of their baby girl in July.

A story that most Yoopers are familiar with, Robin and Steve Chapekis are U.P. natives who couldn’t wait to leave the area as soon as possible. Most recently, they were living and working in the Detroit area. While they enjoyed the city and having access to things like sporting events, art galleries, and restaurants, the pandemic shifted their mindset. When those amenities were no longer offered (with no end in sight), they thought, “What are we still doing here?”
Luckily, they were able to smoothly transition to remote work as they relocated to Escanaba. Steve kept his job as an engineer in the automotive industry and Robin continued her own firm, SVELTE HR, while maintaining clientele in the Detroit area and growing locally.
The decision to move back to the U.P. stemmed from wanting to return to the outdoor lifestyle they grew up with, but the two quickly realized that the area is full of excellent opportunities as they began managing rental properties and looking into potential locations to open a coworking space, Docking Stations. While interacting with the local business community, they quickly noticed an outpouring of encouragement and excitement about new businesses. Robin, Steve, Chief (orange) and Murphy (brown) are building their lives in the U.P. and couldn’t imagine doing it anywhere else.

Following graduation from Northern Michigan University, Brianne and Steve Farr moved west to “chase the dream.” They quickly realized there’s no place quite like the U.P. In San Francisco, the Farrs were missing a sense of community, world-class biking trails, and Lake Superior.
Returning home, they both found good-paying jobs that fit their adventurous lifestyle. In Marquette, Brianne is the Market Manager for ManPower where she oversees a team of local recruiters, along with roughly 100 ManPower associates throughout the U.P. Steve manages the marketing for Blackrocks Brewery and is an extraordinary outdoor photographer.
This year, the energetic family of four committed to spending 1,000+ hours outside – nearly three hours of sledding, hiking, and skiing every day. They are crazy-happy and couldn’t imagine living and raising their children anywhere other than home.
