This advancement aligns with the EU’s objectives to promote circular economy solutions and minimize pollution in water resources.
In 2023, the Environmental Protection Agency determined “health advisory levels” for two of the most hazardous PFAS chemicals, known as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctyl sulfonate (PFOS).
During the visit in Japan, our CEO was invited to speak about ways of monitoring of “forever chemicals” and it risks at the Cambridge Innovation Center in Tokyo.
What are PFAS?
In 2023, the Environmental Protection Agency determined “health advisory levels” for two of the most hazardous PFAS chemicals, known as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctyl sulfonate (PFOS). PFAS are man-made chemicals that have been used in industry and consumer products worldwide since the 1940s. PFAS have been detected in ocean waters across the globe, from coastal regions to the deep sea. Studies have found PFAS concentrations in remote areas like the Arctic and Antarctic oceans, highlighting the persistence and mobility of these chemicals in marine environments.
Currently PFAS screening is done by Lab analysis, which is expensive and time consuming and it costs in certified labs is $300 – $600 for one sample.

REVIVE (Community-centred language REVItalisation powered by heritage-led storytellling and digital innoVation in Europe) brings together an international consortium of European academic and industry partners from the UK, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Romania, Serbia and Estonia.
The aim of this project to use 3D immersive technologies and digital innovation such as Extended Reality (XR) technologies, data visualisation and archival research for the protection of Europe’s heritage and linguistic capital. This is aligned with the Faro Convention and the principles of the UNESCO 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH), and European policies in the context of Endangered Languages and Linguistic Diversity and Digital Society.
Languages are part of our shared Cultural Heritage and gateways to European multicultural identity. Within this framework, Endangered Intangible Heritage and Language (EIHL) communities hold unique traditional knowledge that supports a distinct sense of place-making and long traditions of cultural and heritage sustainability within some of the most vulnerable ecosystems. Although digital technologies provide a uniquely powerful opportunity to revitalise EIHL, previous efforts have predominantly concentrated on preserving grammatical/lexical aspects. There remains untapped potential in exploring the integrated use of immersive technologies and participatory storytelling for linguistic heritage revitalisation through active community engagement.
Taking advantage of XR (Extended Reality) technologies, REVIVE will produce the first EU online digital scaffolder comprising a) an online repository (and showcase) of old material testimonies collected by locals and new XR digital narratives and b) onsite exhibitions, setup in selected communities’ venues.
Project goals and duration
The main results of the project are creation of digital contents and stories to promote reawakening of two endangered languages. Project will provide a digital gallery about heritage of languages to address the gathering, search, and exhibition of EIHL at European and local levels.
Zentrix role in the project
Zentrix Lab is working on the digital platform for preservation of endangered languages in Europe based on two concrete case studies and cultural contexts: Cornish (UK), and Griko (Italy).

Zentrix Lab is developing Federated Machine Learning Software
Use of available large volumes of user data is very limited due to the privacy concerns, which is the reason why the data are kept isolated in islands of system, not available for secondary use and processing. Furthermore, practice showed that in many scenarios data are unrightfully accessed and shared with third-party, and even, when the consent for the data processing exists, the learning models incorporate proxies that are inexact, biased and often unfair.
HARPOCRATES, focuses on setting the foundations of digitally blind evaluation systems that will, by design, eliminate proxies such as geography, gender, race, and others and eventually have a tangible impact on building fairer, democratic and unbiased societies. To do so, we plan to design several practical cryptographic schemes (Functional Encryption and Hybrid Homomorphic Encryption) for analysing data in a privacy-preserving way.
Besides processing statistical data in a privacy-preserving way, we also aim to enable a richer, more balanced and comprehensive approach where data analytics and cryptography go hand in hand with a shift towards increased privacy.
In HARPOCRATES we will first show how to effectively combine cryptography with the principles of differential privacy to secure and privatise databases. Next, we will build privacy-preserving machine learning models able to classify encrypted data by performing high accuracy predictions directly on ciphertexts across federated data spaces. Finally, to demonstrate how these solutions respond to users’ needs, we will implement two real-world cross-border data sharing scenarios related to health data analysis for sleep medicine and threat intelligence for local authorities.
Project goals
Availability of Big Data combined with advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) enable broad capabilities for both private and public actors. However, cross-organisation and cross-border data sharing in-line with GDPR is increasingly difficult, as collection of granular, multi-dimensional personal data meets improved capabilities to cross-link data sets.
HARPOCRATES leverages novel cryptographic schemes to advance the capabilities of Privacy Preserving Machine Learning (PPML) and Federated Learning (FL), thus enabling decentralised training, validation, and prediction on encrypted data. Such privacy-preserving services and secure computation enable users to both benefit from cloud-based machine intelligence and maintain control over data. HARPOCRATES will enable digitally blind evaluation systems demonstrated in practical application scenarios, helping build fairer, democratic, and unbiased societies.
Zentrix role in the project
Zentrix is developing federated machine learning platform to allow privacy preserving AI and processing of the datasets. Federated learning platform will enable training an algorithm across multiple decentralized edge devices or servers holding local data samples, without exchanging them.
Furthermore, Zentrix has an important role from the start of the project as a project lead for the dissemination, exploitation and standardization. The task will include participation in (standardization) working groups and delivery of new standards, with a focus on the consent and interoperability ontology for personal data (Electornic Data INterchange) EDI with enforced GDPR.
Zentrix will be responsible for creating the Harpocrates ecosystem by leveraging existing ecosystems and communities, and thus minimizing the amount of work and resources which are required to contribute to strengthening the EU’s cybersecurity capacities and sovereignty in digital technologies.
Harpocrates team comprises a consortium of 13 members, including universities, university hospitals, SMEs and regional government administration bodies from 9 different countries including United Kingdom, Finland, Sweden, Ireland, Serbia, Germany, Spain, Italy and France. Coordinator of the project is The University Of Westminster Lbg (UK). Project kickoff is in October and its planned to last until October 2025.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 101069535.

Zentrix Lab is developing an Early Warning System Climate and Detection and Mitigation for Sand Fly-borne Diseases (Environment and health), based on retroactive dataset of climate and vector disease, originating in last 50-100 years back.
CLIMOS aims to assist mitigation of climate- and climate change-induced emergence, transmission and spread of vector-borne and zoonotic pathogens based on Eco-health and One Health approaches. This will be achieved by quantifying climate and environmental-related drivers of sand fly vector populations and the sand fly-borne diseases (SFBDs) across Europe.
The project will provide an Early Warning System (EWS) and decision support frameworks for more accurate climate and health modelling, prognosis of infection risk and range expansions, and adaptation options. Socio-economic analysis and risk assessments will inform decision support providing social and cost-benefit evaluations.
Towards these goals, an open access interactive CLIMOS online platform will be developed containing data on vector and SFBD species geography and up-to-date monitoring, climate, environment, and mathematical algorithms. The accompanying educational platform will enable evidence-based mitigation decision-making by social, environmental and financial stakeholders, public bodies and policy makers.
CLIMOS will generate science-based predictions, actions and policy-relevant recommendations to mitigate climate change-induced emergence and spread of SFBDs, by providing: precision vector and infection surveillance methods and networks across 10 countries; creation of big data time series (on vectors, disease, micro and macroclimate, environment and health, and on infection risk) to be available also for use at the EU Climate and Health Observatory, and as European Commission ISA JoinUP open-source tool for public and healthcare; new interoperability data ontologies (Open Biological and Biomedical Ontology [OBO] and Open Geospatial Consortium [OGC] for SFBDs and climate); new innovative technical solutions for vector monitoring (new trapping solution and EWS components); and at least 45 peer-reviewed open access publications, 2 policy reports, and diversity of public engagement materials.
Project goals and duration
The main objective of this project is to support the establishment of an early warning system (EWS) for sand fly triggered health infections and potential diseases, including all endemic sand fly vectors and the main pathogens (Leishmania parasites and phleboviruses). The approach will be prospective, i.e. generate predictions to assist policy recommendations, provide interactive maps for risk management and carry out adaptation cost and benefit assessments.
Project kickoff is in September of 2022 and it’s planned to last for 3 years.
Zentrix role in the project
Zentrix has an important role as a technical coordinator of the Climos Project. Using our technical expertise and experience we will develop CLIMOS Early Warning System, assemble prototypes of sensors and traps. Furthermore, we will participate in testing and validation of the Early Warning System with other partners, analyse the hardware production, scale up of the products, traps and materials used.
Zentrix Lab has participated in the consortium building and drafting phase, and had a leading role on the proposal preparation – using its experience in project writing and project submission process.
The Consortium of the CLIMOS project has been made up by 29 participants from 16 Countries. Members include prestigious European universities, research institutes, government organizations, non profit organisations and SMEs. Project coordination will be done by Universidade NOVA de Lisboa.
It is expected that CLIMOS outcomes will provide an early warning system and support structures for more accurate modelling of climate, health and prognosis of infection risk, which should encompass socio-economic analysis and risk assessments to support decision-makers by providing social and cost-benefit appraisals.

Zentrix Lab is working with biggest Pharma players in the game to develop technological framework for data harmonisation and reuse in clinical trials.
FACILITATE is a project built on a patient-centered, data-driven, technological platform where dynamic consent allows the returning of clinical trial data to study participants within a GDPR compliant and approved ethical framework. FACILITATE starts off by providing clear rules in a trusted ethical, legal, and regulatory ecosystem before engaging patients as data generators.
This avoids the current situation where clinical data are siloed in separate repositories without any possibility to be used beyond their original single-sided purpose. FACILITATE will provide the technological solutions to comply with GDPR in medical research by building on the empowered stakeholders willingness to share and re-use their data.
The FACILITATE Consortium was constituted by drawing from a broad range of capacities to tackle the ambitious challenges related to future clinical trials, such as preventive, long-term, and real-world evidence trials. The Consortium took an innovative approach to the data return to study participants by asking them what they needed to be implemented to feel in a trusted ecosystem.
This required all Consortium participants to leverage on their existing networks to bring together stakeholders at all levels in the decision-making chain, including patients, healthcare professionals, software designers, clinical trials repositories processors and controllers, ethicists, lawyers, and other active regulators. Having obtained a dynamic consent on the data portability FACILITATE will re-use and cross-reference them with those contained in other repositories including RWE data captured across multiple settings and devices.
The duration of the project and the strategy
FACILITATE will last 4 years and will participate in the extended Pilot on Open Research Data of Horizon 2020. Its strategy represents a unique and innovative opportunity for developing a process for returning data pack to the study participants, and to evaluate the effectiveness of developer interoperability tools in the healthcare ecosystem.
Zentrix role in the project
Zentrix is a leading architecture and technical requirements work, including API specification. In scope of the FACILITATE project, Zentrix development will focus on the data sharing protocols, consent definition and federated platform development.
Zentrix will participate in integration and evaluation of the platform with the stakeholders, making the project outcomes and the process of returning data to the patients validated with the key stakeholders including patients. Zentrix develops the FACILITATE Website, dissemination material and assets required for the successful dissemination. The exploitation of the developed tools will be examined with the stakeholders with the possibility for commercialisation.
Zentrix Lab has participated in consortium building and drafting phase as one of the three technical partners gathered under the idea to develop interoperable infrastructure based on the outcomes of harmonization of the planned legal and ethical research.
This project has received funding from the Innovative Medicines Initiative 2 Joint Undertaking (JU) under grant agreement No 101034366. The JU receives support from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and EFPIA.
