Inspiration

Assistly was inspired by the silent struggles of countless HIV-positive mothers who face challenges not only in managing their own health but in protecting the health of their unborn children. For many of these women, ART (Antiretroviral Therapy) adherence isn’t just about taking medication—it’s a lifeline, a hope to prevent the transmission of HIV to their children. In communities where access to reliable healthcare guidance is limited, a missed dose or a skipped appointment can mean the difference between health and heartbreak. We were moved by the courage of these women, many of whom lack adequate support or knowledge about HIV prevention during pregnancy. We wanted to create something that could be their companion—a trustworthy source of guidance and encouragement, helping them on a path to a healthier life for themselves and their children. Assistly is more than a chatbot; it’s a bridge to brighter futures.

What it does

Assistly is a specialized healthcare chatbot designed to guide HIV-positive pregnant women on ART adherence and HIV prevention. It provides real-time answers to questions related to ART, HIV prevention, and health support for both mothers and children, delivering tailored insights to encourage health and wellness. Assistly is equipped with reminders, resources, and emotional support tips, ensuring that users receive continuous assistance in their journey toward better health outcomes.

How we built it

We developed Assistly using Google’s Gemini-Pro API integrated with Streamlit to create an intuitive, accessible user interface. Leveraging natural language processing capabilities, we crafted a chatbot specifically tuned to address questions around ART adherence and HIV prevention. The Streamlit framework allowed us to design a friendly, supportive environment, while the backend setup ensured that the responses were precise, empathetic, and helpful.

Challenges we ran into

Throughout development, we faced challenges in training the model to respond specifically within the scope of ART and HIV support while avoiding general medical advice. Ensuring the sensitivity of language when addressing delicate health issues was also crucial. Additionally, integrating data sources relevant to HIV treatment in a way that felt seamless for users presented some technical hurdles. We wanted Assistly to feel like a trusted friend, not just a machine, which meant refining responses to be both accurate and compassionate.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re incredibly proud of creating a tool that addresses a critical gap in healthcare support for HIV-positive mothers. Building a chatbot that provides reliable information tailored specifically to ART adherence and mother-to-child HIV prevention is a meaningful achievement. We’re also proud of the empathetic design and the streamlined user experience that makes Assistly accessible to those who need it most.

What we learned

Through this project, we gained a deeper understanding of the power of technology in transforming healthcare accessibility. We learned the importance of empathy in tech design, especially when addressing sensitive health issues. The process highlighted the challenges and nuances of working with AI to ensure it provides relevant, respectful, and impactful assistance to users in need.

What's next for Assistly

Our next steps for Assistly include integrating multilingual support to reach more diverse communities globally and exploring partnerships with local healthcare providers to increase access to resources. We also aim to incorporate scheduling reminders for ART medication and upcoming appointments, further enhancing its value as a comprehensive health assistant. Ultimately, we envision Assistly as a trusted companion for every HIV-positive mother, offering unwavering support throughout their journey to health and hope.
