Why we need COUNSLY

  • 96 million americans have had to wait longer than one week for mental health treatments.
  • 1 in 5 Americans will experience a mental illness in a given year.
  • 25% of the American population reported having to choose between getting mental health treatment and paying for daily necessities.

What it does

Using a speech-to-text API, COUNSYL prompts users to talk about their day. It then runs sentiment analysis to classify the day as either good or bad. Twilio allows COUNSYL to send an email to users with the transcript of what they have said, along with resources and the classification.

Challenges

  1. The team members in charge of UI had to leave the hackathon early, however it presented me with the opportunity to learn about databases and how to create log in / log out pages.
  2. Sendgrid was a new tool for me, and learning to integrate the API allowed me to broaden my understanding of technology as a whole and the real time impact I could create with it.
  3. Sentiment analysis was also something I had never done before, so thst was very challenging.

Future

I will definetely work on the UI side of this app, specifically on the log in / log out pages. I would like to see how I can save the good/bad mental health days to my SQL database and export it as a calendar to visually represent trends in mood. Additionally, I'd like to improve the sentiment analysis to be more accurate and detect serious triggers.
