Inspiration
The inspiration came from noticing the increasing crime rate in not only Florida but the US as a whole. We saw a need for some sort of device that would allow people to reach safety if a danger or threat ever presenteded it's self.
What it does
The Safehouse App allows for its user, after registering, to either locate establishments labeled as safehouse that will aid you if you are in danger by supplying you with food, water, and shelter, until the authorities arrive to further assist you. The user has the option to either simply locate them in the local area in order to plan (i.e. for vacation, tavels to work, etc.) or if in danger, it will allow them to activate the Safehouse Protocals where the authorities are notified of their last known location, the nearest Safehouse of which they will be instructed to head to. It will also give them the distance and direction in order to get there.
How we built it
We built it through the use of Android Studios.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenges we ran into, with the race against time in mind, were establishing the database for the app, a record keeper for the map that will track the user if they stray off the course so that if lost the authorities would have better data to help aid in finding them. We also ran into the problem of the actual notification of the authorities as well.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we were actually able to come out for our first ever hackathon and get close to completing a project that would do some good for the community.
What we learned
We learned that we need to learn to attack problems from different angles, faster. We also learned that we need to come a little more prepared and with a larger team that just 2 people.
What's next for Safehouse
Continual development. When the project is finally finished and ready for pitching to companies, it would be revolutionary. Its not for a party, its to preserve life.
