To-the-moon-and-hack
Submission for the hackathon: To the Moon and Hack. We have always been interested in 2d game design, so we decided to learn an open-source game engine called Godot. We were thinking of making a Space Invaders or Asteroids clone, but we thought of the game we used to play, Speedrunners, and decided to merge the grappling idea into a space game. We drafted ideas, figuring out we wanted to make a game where you race against another player, grappling onto asteroids upwards to survive. We used a creative commons space-themed asset pack to start developing our game. The process of creating the moving asteroids and the player was initially easy, but developing a grappling hook seemed like a hard problem. We researched online, learning about collision layer masking, ray tracing, and paths, however, implementing these caused many bugs to arise. While the final game did have a lot of visual glitches, we are proud of what we made and we learned a lot.
