About the Project: TrailSafe

Inspiration

As solo travelers ourselves, we understand the challenges and concerns that come with traveling alone, particularly as women. Through conversations with fellow female travelers, colleagues, and family members, we realized that safety is a major barrier for many women who want to explore the world on their own. This inspired us to create TrailSafe, an app designed to empower women to travel confidently by providing safety insights, real-time updates, and a supportive community. Our goal is to ensure women can travel without constantly worrying about their safety, knowing that they have a trusted companion in their pocket.

What it does

TrailSafe is an AI-powered travel companion that offers real-time safety updates, emergency support, and travel recommendations. It uses AI to provide predictive alerts, safety ratings, and cultural tips. It also offers offline features, such as maps of nearby safe spots and essential resources like pharmacies and police stations. Additionally, the app includes gamification features, allowing users to earn rewards for engaging with the app’s features and contributing to the community, making travel not just safer but also more fun.

How we built it

We built TrailSafe by integrating several key technologies, including Google Gemini’s natural language processing for personalized recommendations and real-time alerts. We used geolocation APIs to track and provide users with information about nearby safe spots, while also implementing offline functionality to ensure users can access critical information even when there’s no internet connection. Our team also worked closely with community partners to incorporate crowdsourced safety data and provide verified travel insights to help users stay informed and confident on their journeys.

Challenges we ran into

One of the major challenges we faced was ensuring the app worked effectively in low or no network areas. As travelers, we know how important it is to have access to vital safety information, even in remote locations. Developing the offline capabilities, such as downloadable maps and emergency resources, took significant time and testing to make sure they function seamlessly without an internet connection. Additionally, gathering accurate crowdsourced data was a challenge, but we overcame it by collaborating with verified travel partners and implementing a robust review system to ensure the information we provide is reliable.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of how TrailSafe has come together as a comprehensive solution that addresses both safety and the overall travel experience. The app is designed to be a one-stop platform that not only provides real-time alerts but also encourages users to engage with the community and enjoy the travel process. We’re especially proud of the successful integration of gamification features, which motivates users to actively participate and share safety tips, creating a collaborative environment. The inclusion of offline maps with emergency resources has been a significant achievement as well, ensuring users have access to critical information, even in remote areas.

What we learned

Throughout the development of TrailSafe, we learned how to balance technology with empathy. Creating an app that is both user-friendly and effective in providing safety information was a challenge, but it was essential to us. We learned about the importance of real-time data and how it can significantly impact a user’s confidence in their journey. Additionally, building a community-driven platform taught us the value of crowdsourced data and how it can improve safety predictions and recommendations for fellow travelers.

What's next for TrailSafe

The next steps for TrailSafe include expanding our features to offer more comprehensive offline maps, including additional safe spots and emergency contacts. We are also exploring partnerships with verified female-friendly travel and tour providers to ensure a safer, more connected travel network for our users. Additionally, we plan to refine the gamification features, introducing new challenges and rewards to further engage users. As we continue to grow, our ultimate goal is to make TrailSafe the go-to travel companion for solo female travelers and single mothers, offering them the confidence and support they need to blaze their own trails.
