Thanks for putting all of this together.
As we discussed today, please look into Envoy's timeout behavior, and add a unit test if possible/necessary.
Also, please update the verbose doxygen-style function contracts (in the header files) to account for the addition of the TimeSource and deadline in various places.

I'm digging around in the Envoy source code to see how (if) the RequestOptions::timeout is used. The HTTP asyc client implementation uses it to initialize a NullRouteImpl, which then is not used directly. A bit mysterious.
Anyway, I was interested to know what happens when the resulting std::chrono::milliseconds is negative. What happens then?

Once we figure out how/if the timeout is used by the underlying HTTP implementation, we can accurately describe in this contract what deadline means.

Please mention time_source in the contract above. I think it's reasonable to say that it's used to calculate request timeouts (could be used for something else in the future, but probably not).

Please add a TEST_F for timeouts, if the mocking machinery permits it.
Regardless of whether we have a dedicated unit test, let's find out what timeouts actually do here within Envoy.

watchers handle callback errors gracefully by catching any exceptions using `TRY_ASSERT_MAIN_THREAD`, logging errors instead of propagating them and always returning the `OkStatus` to the event loop. …proxy#43667) Commit Message: The LEDS subscription callback lambda captured `used_load_assignment` by value as a raw pointer to the object owned by the `cluster_load_assignment_` unique_ptr. When a subsequent EDS update reassigned `cluster_load_assignment_`, the old object was destroyed but existing LEDS subscriptions (not recreated for unchanged configs) still held the dangling pointer. When the LEDS subscription later fired its callback (e.g. onConfigUpdateFailed), dereferencing this pointer caused a segfault.
