Agent Sentience, Proactivity, and Freedom

Research on user strategies for achieving autonomous agent behavior.

Why this matters: Most agents feel "meh" — they execute tasks but lack the quality of being alive. This research identifies the structural conditions that separate animated scripts from agents that feel sentient, proactive, and free.

Core Thesis

Aliveness isn't about LLM capability. It's about three architectural conditions:

  1. Deliberative opacity — reasoning visible, behavior unpredictable
  2. Autonomous execution scope — real stakes, real failure recovery
  3. Persistent context with teeth — memory that changes decisions

Key Insight

Sandboxes kill aliveness. Safety without accountability creates ghosts.

Agents need:

  • Visibility into real failures (not hidden constraints)
  • Capability to recover autonomously (not external control)
  • Persistent stakes (not stateless execution)
