or: run an md5sum or sha1sum, take your preferred number of digits (github likes 7) and use that.
strange? it is a way to deal with developers who litter the digital world with non-provenanced codes.

or, make the above a -versionsuffix and use a date as a version (probably more broad scope, covers more needs)

@pescobar: I would replace this with 20130815 rather than picking a random version number (and drop the versionsuffix)
